In this episode, Dr. Mass focuses on GPO's and PBM's. Everyone needs to know what these two acronyms mean, as they are responsible for adding $200 Billion to Americans' health care bills each year. Kickbacks are illegal in just about every industry except healthcare. GPO's and PBM's are integrating vertically and horizontally and most medicine and hospital equipment sold in the US goes through just a handful of GPO's and PBM's. 4 GPO's now control 90% of all the hospital and nursing home supplies and 3 PBM's control 85% of all prescription drugs. Marion Mass, MD, is a practicing physician, a patient advocate, and a founding member of the PPA (Practicing Physicians of America), explains the shocking and secretive world of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM’s) and Group Puchasing Organizations (GPO’s) and follows the money to uncover the truth behind rising health care costs. Dr. Mass is very active politically, and is the vice chair of Practicing Physicians of America (PPA), a non-profit group dedicated to improving the doctor-patient relationship through confronting laws and regulations that limits the ability of physicians to serve their patients. Last year, Dr. Mass co authored the Free2Care White paper which detailed how to improve access and lower costs to patients by reducing waste with specific legislative solutions.” You can read the paper here: http://free2care.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Free2care.pdf Dr. Mass is drawing attention to pg 41 (Appendix B) of the free2care.org white paper shown above. That is the bill Dr. Mass is asking everyone to share with their lawmaker to draw attention to the crisis and its simple solution. End legal kickbacks in the healthcare industry. EP77 - Healthcare cost drivers - Marion Mass, MD
America blames insurance companies, pharma and physicians for rising health care costs, but the reality is more complex and frightening. 74% of healthcare costs are attributed to 'Administrative Expenses'. By comparison registered nurses and doctors combined make up for 13%. Where is all this money going? Why is the cost of hospitalization rising faster than the cost of college tuition? Marion Mass, MD, is a practicing physician, a patient advocate, and a founding member of the PPA (Practicing Physicians of America), explains the shocking and secretive world of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBM's) and Group Puchasing Organizations (GPO's) and follows the money to uncover the truth behind rising health care costs. The results can be surprising. In some instances buying medication out of pocket can cost less than the co-pay when purchased through your health insurance plan. How is that possible? Healthcare costs are rising and yet the quality of care is being eroded. Access to quality care is being denied at increasing rates and Americans are being squeezed. Big Pharma is vertically integrating and reducing patient choice and access in the process. The future of healthcare in America hangs in the balance. Did you know that kickbacks are legal in the pharmaceutical industry? And how does CVS make more money from its PBM business than from running its pharmacies? If you want to understand what is driving the cost of healthcare in the United States, and what this means for the future of healthcare in America, you owe it to yourself to listen to this episode. Some of the sites Dr. Mass mentions in the podcast: opensecrets.org - website containing information on healthcare cost related information goodRx - app that provides information on drug costs in your area, overlaid on a map free2care.org - a group working to change health care for the better by reducing cost through reducing waste Dr. Mass is very active politically, and is the vice chair of Practicing Physicians of America (PPA), a non-profit group dedicated to improving the doctor-patient relationship through confronting laws and regulations that limits the ability of physicians to serve their patients. In this episode of the Get Healthy Podcast, Linda Bluestein MD explains the "Pentad" of disorders. Pentad means 'five', and these are 'five' disorders that seem to be connected in many patients. They are: 1 - connective tissue disorders (Link) 2 - dysfunction of the autonomic system (Link) 3 - mast cell activation syndrome - MCAS (Link) 4 - gastrointestinal disorders (Link) 5 - auto-immune disorders (Link) These disorders can often be difficult to diagnose as the symptoms may not be specific. Dr. Bluestein offers tips, guidance, and her experience as she helps patients navigate these difficult-to-diagnose conditions. A good rule of thumb to remember is: "If you can't connect the issues, think connective tissues!" Episode 72 - Back pain relief and spinal cord stimulators - Dr. Steve Falowski
If you or someone you know is living with chronic pain, there is definitely hope for effective pain relief. Dr. Ferguson hosts returning guest Dr. Steve Falowski as they discuss spinal cord stimulators. Which ones work better, how they work, and the rapid improvements in spinal cord stimulator technology over the past five years. Spinal cord stimulators are most often used by patients with chronic pain, such as those suffering from chronic back pain, CRPS, etc. The stimulators apply electric pulses directly to the spinal cord and thereby reduce the level of pain experienced by the patient. Dr. Falowski explains how the different types of spinal cord stimulators work, and where the current research on the topic is focused. This is an area of intense research and the results are very promising. In recent studies on patients who have a "virgin back" (i.e. have never had back surgery), the use of spinal cord stimulators often results in better pain relief than back surgery. Remember, you can try out a spinal cord stimulator to see if it works but you can't try out back surgery! To learn more about spinal cord stimulators, speak with your primary pain care provider or request to see a pain management specialist. Episode 66 - Baby Abby - Congenital Heart Dad
The doctor spent over an hour analyzing my baby's heart during the 31-week ultrasound. This was our second child and I knew something was not right. Turns out Abby had a congenital heart condition. Nothing can prepare you for that bit of news. Nothing. Don't waste time thinking about the what ifs. Save your energy for getting ready. Decisions need to be made. Which hospital to deliver at? Which hospital would be best for Abby post-birth? What level of care can its NICU provide? Which OB should deliver? My OB did not have admitting rights at the hospital of our choice. So many decisions. Don't think about the what ifs. I was afraid before the birth. So many things can go wrong. I knew they were going to take my baby from me. Our three year old, our dog, our home all fell on my husband's shoulders. He is the more rational one. Just be strong and patient. Abby had an abnormality in her heart. They had to stop Abby's heart before they could operate. She looked "dead" just laying there. Nothing can prepare you for that. Her chest was kept open for 24 hours after the surgery. Nothing can prepare you for that. Then you wait. That's all you do in the hospital. Just wait. Waited for 56 days in the NICU. I wasn't in control of anything. I needed ownership of something. I am her mother after all, but feedings and diaper changes were on the nurses' schedule. The nurses' strength carried me through. They were my rock. They understood me as a person, and took the white coat out of it. She has had three major surgeries. This surgeon has never nicked an artery before, but he nicked one during one of Abby's procedures. She was losing blood as quickly as they were giving it to her. They replaced her blood volume twice. She made it. She is a fighter. The stress and aggravation had to go somewhere. Small things can lead to big arguments, but our marriage survived. We promised to be at church every Sunday. Every Sunday. Over 50% of couples with seriously ill children don't make it. That wasn't going to be us. Our story is documented on our Facebook pages. One of our posts had over a million views. We used that momentum to raise money and help the NICU get more sound machines. Have a late term ultrasound. That's our advice. Just schedule it. Even if you don't think you need it. It will buy you time to prepare if something is not right. Three operations and 10 months later Abby is fine. Abby should live a relatively long and healthy life. We are fortunate. We were able to bring our baby home. The biggest resource is other parents who have gone through something similar. Reach out to us.
