*DISCLAIMER*

Hi there, this is Joe Walsh from the Get Out and Surf Podcast.

I want to make a disclaimer about this week’s episode. After 44 episodes of Get Out and SURF, I’ve gone out of my way to be as objective as possible and to not be promotional at all. I mean really, you’re not listening to this podcast to be marketed to, and I’m not doing this podcast to sell you anything.

Yes its true that Witch’s Rock Surf Camp produces this podcast, and in full disclosure, I’m the founder and owner of the camp.

But this podcast really has very little to do with the surf camp and everything to do with the passion we all share for surfing. Since our first episode on January 4th, we’ve had some fun banter, we’ve conducted some very interesting interviews, we’ve traveled to far away places, and we’ve covered lots of content about Costa Rica and everything else surf.

But this week it’s going to be a little different. After being asked over and over again “What’s it like at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp?”, “When’s the best time to go?”, “How do I get there?”, “What else is there to do?”, etc, I figured we owed at least one episode to try and answer these questions.

So, I sat down with Shawna Mullen, Julie Javelle, and Daniella Ortiz, three very lovely ladies from the Witch’s Rock Surf Camp reservations office to ask them all of the most frequent questions from prospective travelers interested in coming to Tamarindo and Witch’s Rock Surf Camp.

42: Bring Your Booties: A British Surf Adventure

Joe and Niki threw destiny to the Wheel Of Waves and so this week’s episode comes from the beautiful coasts of England! Niki shows Joe around his native land, they take in a couple of cold surfs, culinary treats and drive the length and breadth of the Southwest peninsula.

Sit back and relax as we discuss being unprepared for colder temps, the best time of the year to surf England, and what to do when the waves are flat. We also ask local surfers in the parking lot for some of that invaluable “insider knowledge” and what motivates them to surf in these colder conditions.

Plus Joe has a near heart attack as we drive down old narrow country roads in the search of waves, while figuring out if the boys are real surfers or have just gotten soft from surfing too long in tropical paradise. Put on your 5:4 wetsuit and enjoy the show!

35: What Is Hurricane Season? (with Ryan Waldron)

35: What Is Hurricane Season? (with Ryan Waldron)

It’s Sunday night, September 1st 2019, and the first major hurricane of the year Hurricane Dorian is currently blasting the Bahamas and heading towards Florida and the Carolinas. While most people along these coasts are boarding up their windows and packing their emergency bags, surfers from around the world are doing the exact opposite and heading directly towards the eye of the storm.

It’s officially hurricane season, and the surf is going to get EPIC.

In this week’s episode we hang out with Ryan Waldron, Senior Meteorologist for Witch’s Rock Surf Camp. Ryan grew up surfing in Virginia Beach and he seriously rips. Ryan also studies swell formation and swell forecasts and knows more on the subject than just about anyone.

Listen in as he describes how he ever ended up in Tamarindo in the first place, driving from the US to Tamarindo five different times and the adventures he had along the way.

31: Old School Adam Greenman

Welcome to the show Adam!

Adam Greenman got his start in the surfing industry working as a reservationist at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp back in 2002. After a few years, Adam went on to start Trim Surfboards in the UK and became the UK’s main importer of high-end longboards, selling classic logs for upwards of $6000 to the UK’s surfing elite. These days you can find Adam working hard at developing more environmentally friendly surfboards using hemp, plant-based resins, and other forward-thinking materials. Check it out!

While sitting down with this week's guest, we were so inspired that we're thinking of having a sunset-off contest. Stay tuned and follow us on Instagram at @getoutandsurf for more details.

When Kristen Brown moved down to Tamarindo, Costa Rica over 5 years ago, she quickly became a regular in the lineup while working for Robert August. After observing our stunning sunsets one too many times and Robert's temporary move back to California, she became the force behind Samba to the Sea. Prints and pillows are available at The Sunset Shop where our listeners get 25% off until July 17th. Just use the code GOSURF at checkout.

Who invented International Surfing Day? What ever happened to Surfing Magazine? Who is Steve Bigler and what did he tell me about Hollister Ranch? Where the hell is Fanning Island and why would you ever go there? What makes your local surf spot’s parking lot so damn special anyways?

Happy Fathers Day all you surfing dads out there, I hope you’re shredding the gnar. I look forward to surfing with you down here in Tamarindo. Pura vida - Joe Walsh

21: Buying Real Estate In Tamarindo (with Trade Wind Properties)

WARNING. We didn’t actually talk about surfing in this episode!

I get a lot of emails from podcast listeners and I get asked often from surf camp guests and from friends and family with questions about moving here to Costa Rica, buying property here, building a house here, general questions about relocating, setting up a business, sending kids to school, retiring here, etc.

I get it, and I want to help support your dreams of surfing as many great waves as possible and living an amazing life. I found what I was looking for here in Costa Rica, and maybe you will too. But matter what, it’s always good to know what’s possible on the other side.

I am not a realtor, but my sister in law Katie Meyers is. She’s lived in Tamarindo for the past 15 years and she’s a straight shooter, so I invited her and Jim Reily, the owner of Trade Wind Properties here in Tamarindo, to give us some answers to some of your most frequently asked questions about buying real estate in Tamarindo.

Some great stories here, like how Joe first met Patrick McNulty back in the early days of Witch’s Rock Surf Camp. Joe was giving away the farm, focusing entirely on the surf experience with no handle on how to actually make money from the business. But the surf camp survived and thrived! Also hear about what happened when a huge tropical storm hit Tamarindo (hint: boats sink), and what it was like to experience the 7.8 earthquake in 2012. This was a really cool episode to make, hanging out with Joe Walsh, Niki Hurren, and P-MAC. Enjoy and pura vida!
