Episode 84: Habs' Post-Season Starts Now
In this episode, we discuss...
The Habs' 2023-24 season is done. The Canadiens played their 82nd game VS the Detroit Red Wings and lost in the shootout. While their place in the standings is very similar to last year, it was certainly a season full of bright spots. Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, and Newhook all had career years. The goaltending situation has cleared up and the 3-goalie carousel ended. Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux both played their first NHL games and produced. and so on. It wasn't all positive though, there were some bumps along the way, Josh Anderson had the worst season of his career, the injury bug hit early by taking Dach out during the second game of the season, Armia was waived and sent down to Laval, Xhekaj was sent down to Laval, Slaf struggled out of the gate. Yet, this was still a progressive season for the Montreal Canadiens. Martin St-Louis extended with the Canadiens for 2 years (3 seasons)

Episode 83: Is Cole Caufield's Season a Disappointment?

This season, the Habs have accumulated a lot of points in the standings with their no quit, competitive play. With their most recent victory against the Stanley cup contending Colorado Avalanche. Given where the Habs are at in their rebuild, is it frustrating to see them win VS teams that they "should" lose to? Or are we happy with their compete and progression as a team?
Caufield's game is more well-rounded than it has been in previous seasons. It sems that his more well-rounded style of play is coming at the cost of scoring goals. At the start of the year, projections and expectations were that he would score 40-50 goals. He has not come close to those totals, but his overall game is a lot better, and he is playing at a 65 ppg pace. Were the expectations too high? Is this the best path for him? Is this a disappointing season for him?
Certain members of the media had put out an article with a headline suggesting that Reinbacher is a bust. A bust.... Seriously!? This article came out before his first game with the Laval Rocket and obviously before ever playing an NHL game (training camp excluded). After reading the article, the journalist does not actually state that he is a bust, but that he probably shouldn't have been selected 5th overall and ahead of certain players. We give our thoughts on the article, Reinbacher, his first pro games, and what some scouting pros have said about his game.

Episode 82: Jake Allen Trade, Cap Space, Marchessault a Good Fit?

The Habs traded Jake Allen to the New Jersey Devils for a 2025 conditional 3rd round pick and they retained 50% of his salary. Was this a good trade for the Canadiens?
Minnesota pulled their goalie in overtime to ice 4 players. This strategy led to a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators. This was a risky decision by the Minnesota Wild. If Nashville would've scored, it would have resulted in the Wild losing out on the OT point (aka the loser point). Should more teams do this? Or could this lead to another rule change?
At the moment, the Montreal Canadiens will have about 10 million dollars of cap space at the start of the offseason. Assuming Xhekaj signs a bridge deal (1-2 million), that would leave the have with about 8-9 million dollars. Should they go after players on the UFA market? Could Jonathan Marchessault be a good fit for the Canadiens? Should they wait for the 2025-26 UFA group (a lot of big names - if they don't re-sign), where the Habs will have a lot more cap space available to them.

Apparently, there is rumor going around that there is a gentleman's agreement between Habs GM Kent Hughes and Sean Monahan. The rumor suggests that Kent Hughes will trade Sean Monahan to a playoff contending team at the trade deadline. Is this the right move? Should the Habs try and convince Monahan to stick around and be one of the key leaders of the team?
Another rumor that has gone around and does not seem to want to go away, mainly because of Habs fans and rumor enthusiasts, is the one about Trevor Zegras. The Anaheim Ducks recently traded Jamie Drysdale to the Philadelphia Flyers. Immediately after that trade was completed, rumors started to circulate that Zegras may be available. Some have even suggested that he may be a fit for Montreal. Is Trevor Zegras the answer to the Habs offensive woes? Should the Habs pay a "king's ransom" for Zegras?
Habs fans boo-ed McDavid. Were they right to do so? Some fans from other teams have called Habs fans classless. Are they going too far?

TSN has released their top 50 under 24 list. In our opinion, there are many players who are on this list that probably should not be there or should not be ahead of certain players who are already in the NHL. Additionally, there are players that are currently ranked a little too high or ahead of players that are already achieving greatness. Is this TSN's worst rankings list of all time? Things are not going well in Edmonton. We are not even 20 games into the season, yet their chances of making the playoffs are getting slimmer by the day. Ken Holland has to do something, but what? Could McDavid and Draisaitl actually leave the Edmonton Oilers at the end of their contract? Is Montembeault or Allen the solution for Edmonton this year? Is it too late for this season and should the Oilers already start focusing on next year?

Josh Anderson has been struggling to score and it hasn't been for a lack of trying. He is certainly "snake bitten", but what can the Habs do to really get him going? Over the weekend, Elliotte Friedman reported that the Habs are close to an extension with Samuel Montembeault. Is this the right choice? What is the right cap hit and term for him? And does this mean that Allen or Primeau are on the move? Slafkovsky has been playing well. Despite his low numbers on his stat sheet, his advanced analytics show that he is progressing and doing well. We have seen a difference in him since being paired with Dvorak. We do think that he would look even better next to Monahan. Is it time to break up the Monahan, Pearson, and Gallagher line and pair Monahan with Slafkovsky?

While his injuries are still a concern, assuming that they are behind him, should the Habs consider extending him or trading him at the deadline? Slafkovsky is passing the eye test. However, the fans that are focusing primarily on analytics have suggested that he should be demoted to the AHL. Some have even thrown out the word "bust". On only his 2nd game of the 2023-24 season, Kirby Dach suffered a season ending injury and requires surgery to repair a torn ACL and MCL. This is a big blow to the Canadiens, Kirby Dach and for Habs fans. Many of us, including the Habs and Dach himself, expected big things from him this season. How will the Habs move forward without him? Kaiden Guhle did not finish last game and the latest update is that he is day-to-day with an upper body injury. The injuries are starting to pile up for Kaiden Guhle, is this a cause for concern? Should the Habs break up the Suzuki-Caufield duo? The Habs powerplay is beyond embarrassing and requires a complete overhaul. There should be a lot more focus on coming up with new strategies, a new PP coach, and be less predictable. Oh! and we never want to see the drop pass in the neutral zone again.
