In this week’s podcast, Lily Zhou and Allie Charney discuss music related to female artists and performers. They touch on The Color Purple musical and their favorite songs from the show, then go on to cover a brief background of Hip-Hop music. They talk more about the theme of feminism and assert that it is not so inclusive of Black women, especially in the world of music. They discuss cultural and feminist issues in Miss Saigon and Carmen (the opera). Lastly, they talk about how to be more inclusive with repertoire and how to normalize woman composers. They share a resource called “The Boulanger Initiative,” which promotes woman composers.
