Amani Webber - Schultz - "Your GPA Does Not Define You"

Amani Webber-Schultz is a current PhD student at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, studying shark morphology and swimming biomechanics. She aims to better understand how dermal denticles (the scales on sharks) interact with the water around them and direct flow around their body. Specifically, her PhD is looking at these interactions at their nostrils and tail. Amani is also the Chief Financial Officer for Minorities in Shark Sciences, helping them to open doors for underrepresented groups in the marine science world.

Dr. Carolyn Wheeler- "It's the skill set, not the species"

Dr. Carolyn Wheeler studies the epaulette shark and how they might respond to climate change. She conducted her Ph.D. in Boston and in Australia, being able to conduct her work in a lab and in the field. We also discuss her previous work with sturgeon and Kristen and Carolyn talk about how Carolyn was on track to be a ballerina and how that changed to her becoming a fish and shark researcher. Enjoy!

Dr. Alex McInturf - Perseverance Pays Off

Dr. Alex McInturf is currently a CICOES postdoctoral fellow at Oregon State University’s Big Fish Lab. Her research generally focuses on how marine organisms respond to environmental variables. She studies salmon and sevengill sharks in California and basking sharks in Ireland. She is currently looking at the foraging ecology of salmon sharks in Oregon and Alaska and its impact on local salmon populations. Enjoy!

8. Dr. Lisa Hoopes - The "Fishtritionist"

This week on Gills Talk, Kristen interviews Dr. Lisa Hoopes. Lisa is the Director of Research, Conservation, and Nutrition at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia. There she directs all aspects of clinical nutrition for the animal collection, ranging from the smallest of urchins to the largest of whale sharks. Her background is in marine biology, comparative physiology, and energetics. In Lisa's interview, we talk about her current work and how she can tie in field research to species that live in the aquarium. We also dive into scientific communication and how it is becoming an important skill to have in the field.
