The SF Episode: The SF Housing Crisis, SF’s Transgender District, SF’s Candidate for District Supervisor – with Honey Mahogany, Chair of SF Democrats

The SF Episode: The SF Housing Crisis, SF’s Transgender District, SF’s Candidate for District Supervisor – with Honey Mahogany, Chair of SF Democrats

SF is in the air and on the airwaves this episode, because we go all-in on the politics of Maddie’s neck of the woods. A conversation that covers a ton of ground and provides an insightful look at SF and even CA as a whole’s politics, this episode features an interview with the one, the only, the amazing Honey Mahogany. Not only is Honey the Chair of SF Democrats, but Honey is also running for District 6 Supervisor, which is a HUGE role. No, like, the way in which we learned so much about how this role operates is next level. We also got into how Democratic clubs and organizations like the SF Democrats work (and how to get involved with them) and what their role is. And, as this is a classic all the things episode, we get into Honey’s POV on the SF housing crisis and how it can be remedied. And to cap it all off with something that truly a slay, we talk about Honey’s role in founding SF’s Transgender District, the amazing programs available through it, and what the district’s founding celebrates.

Birth Control, Emergency Contraceptives, and Abortions with Kirti Patel, MD & Malia Funk, Co-Founders of The POV

If our partnership posts on @girlandthegov didn’t give you a clue into who we have on the podcast this week, we highly recommend popping on over there and giving our posts with @gethepov a like, a save, and a share. Now that we’ve gotten that checked off the list, let’s get into the deats of the eppy. We got to chat with Kirti Patel, MD & Malia Funk, Co-Founders of The POV and get into all-things birth control, emergency contraceptives, abortions, and healthcare for people with uteruses. We run through all the FAQs on different types of BC, misconceptions around this sphere of healthcare, and so much more. This eppy is basi if you went to the gyno with your besties and asked all the q’s you wanted to ask and have been too scared to ask (we’ve been there).

PS huge shout out to our listeners for the great audience q’s!

Welcome to Girl and the Gov, The Podcast - Trailer & Audio Glossary

Welcome to Girl and the Gov, The Podcast - Trailer & Audio Glossary

Available on the airwaves and Youtube every Tuesday and Wednesday, Girl and the Gov, The Podcast is an extension of Girl and the Gov¼'s mission to provide a platform for Millennials, Zennials, and Gen-Z to engage with the evolving political sphere in an approachable, digestible, and accessible way. Co-hosted by Sammy Kanter and Maddie Medved, the podcast provides an inside look at the ins and outs of government and politics as we know it today through engaging interviews with leaders in the field and segments that address the questions everyone wants to ask, but never does. In this podcast, there’s no question too stupid, no rock left unturned, and no mysterious jargon that isn’t examined in-depth. The podcast releases two episodes per week -- one on Tuesday's focused on the Top Stories in political news for the week, and one on Wednesday's featuring a guest interview.

This trailer is more than a trailer, it’s also a glossary for the terms in politics we hear all the time, but are often left scratching our heads about. For these terms, we brought in the experts, who shed light on what they mean and what we need to know about them. The tidbits on top terms can be found below – if there are others y’all wanted added, just let us know :)

Ballot Measures x 2 with Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project & Amy Fitch Heacock, Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom

Ballot Measures x 2 with Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project & Amy Fitch Heacock, Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom

It’s our 100th episode and as Obama would say, it’s a BFD. It’s a BFD not just because we’ve made it to the 1-0-0, BUT because we have a special double header episode with two kickass, badass, politicos. The episode is focused on ballot measures, specifically ballot measures as they relate to reproductive rights. Our interviews touch on the various processes per state on jumpstarting a ballot measure, what the journeys look like for getting them on the ballot, direct democracy, petitioning, and so much more. Basically, welcome to ballot measure 101. Oh, and the amazing guests?? Fine, we’ll spill – we’re joined by Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project who gives all the details on Michigan’s repro rights ballot measure, and Amy Fitch Heacock, of Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom who shares the 411 on AZ’s battle for a ballot measure and what’s ahead in the fight for 2024.

We’re grateful for these convos and we’re grateful for our listeners. Cheers to episode 100 and to 100 more :) We love you guys!

Gun Harm Reduction Policies with the Mayor of San Jose, CA, Sam Liccardo

Gun Harm Reduction Policies with the Mayor of San Jose, CA, Sam Liccardo

As of May 26, 2022 there had been 214 mass shootings. There have been additional since that stat was compiled by Insider. It is clear that we have a gun issue in the US (last time we checked, the numbers don’t lie). This issue needs real solutions – now, not later – and there is one elected official that has stepped by to the plate. Cue, the Mayor of San Jose, CA, Sam Liccardo who has introduced innovative gun reform policies in his city. The policy requires gun owners to pay an annual fee and attestation of insurance coverage for accidental firearm-related injury or death, and the fees collected will be donated to a nonprofit focused on gun violence reduction. Our conversation gets into the policy – and a few others – and how mayors have flexibility in testing out policies.

PS if you also spotted Maddie’s TikTok on NRA spending on Senators, we answer your comment-questions!

This episode is super special for a number of reasons. First things first, this is our first ever episode featuring TWO interviews. Our guests are two amazing women in politics, both Democrats running for office – one in a traditionally blue state at the federal level and one in a traditionally red state at the state level. The topic of conversation is reproductive rights, the likely overturning of Roe v. Wade, and legislation in the making and to come. Emily Beach, a Congressional candidate for CA-15 – a strongly Democratic district, gives us her take, her campaign, and how she is uniquely qualified to help protect reproductive rights at the negotiating table. State Representative Mandie Landry takes us to the situation in Louisiana, where she is fighting against a proposed bill that would make those seeking abortion guilty of homicide. She also sheds light on her campaign for State Senate and how if elected in the special election, she would be the only Pro-Choice woman in Louisiana’s senate. This episode brings two important POVs from two different political landscapes, which makes it a must-listen.

The headlines currently read something along the lines of “Roe v. Wade will be overturned.” But, how did we get here? What took us from almost 50 years of precedent to this unnerving outcome? A ~little~ case titled Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization paired with a conservatively stacked SCOTUS is the dual-pronged answer to that q. In this episode, we walk through the case that brought us here and the legal jargon to boot with the co-lead on the case – Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, Hillary Schneller. An expert not only on this case, but the many abortion access cases she’s litigated on behalf of, Hillary knows the in’s and out’s and shares them all in our convo.
