The SF Episode: The SF Housing Crisis, SF’s Transgender District, SF’s Candidate for District Supervisor – with Honey Mahogany, Chair of SF Democrats
SF is in the air and on the airwaves this episode, because we go all-in on the politics of Maddie’s neck of the woods. A conversation that covers a ton of ground and provides an insightful look at SF and even CA as a whole’s politics, this episode features an interview with the one, the only, the amazing Honey Mahogany. Not only is Honey the Chair of SF Democrats, but Honey is also running for District 6 Supervisor, which is a HUGE role. No, like, the way in which we learned so much about how this role operates is next level. We also got into how Democratic clubs and organizations like the SF Democrats work (and how to get involved with them) and what their role is. And, as this is a classic all the things episode, we get into Honey’s POV on the SF housing crisis and how it can be remedied. And to cap it all off with something that truly a slay, we talk about Honey’s role in founding SF’s Transgender District, the amazing programs available through it, and what the district’s founding celebrates.

Ditching Dark Money in Politics, The Next Steps With Congressman Dean Phillips, MN-3
Money, money, moneyyyyyyy! That is what this episode is all about – specifically dark money in politics. You know, that shady, sus thing that seems to have a way of controlling what policies make it across the finish line. To get the rundown on what dark money is and how we can say toodle-loo to it, we brought on a Congressman who has been making a name for himself as a leader on campaign finance reform – Congressman Dean Phillips of Minnesota’s third district. In convo, he gives us more than chump change on why dark money is so prevalent, how it’s used, and the legislation that’s needed to fix this issue. For a glimpse ahead, we talk about the DISCLOSE Act, Honest Ads Act, Get Foreign Money Out of Elections Act, AND a select committee of note – the US House Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress.

Congressional Committees, Running for Senate, and Tons of Tea with Vermont Congressman Peter Welch; Candidate for US Senate
To say that we had fun recording this episode is the understatement of the year. And why is that? Because Vermont’s lone Congressman Peter Welch is an absolute hoot – oh, and also a candidate for the Senate. Our conversation touches on the experience of being a lone representative of a state (one that breeds political powerhouses BTW) and his decision to make the switch from Congress to Senate. We also tapped him for the deats on key committees, like the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Oversight and Reform. Importantly, VERY importantly, we got into the tea on these, like what happens if you end up on a committee you absolutely hate or working with your literal arch nemesis. Congressman Welch gives POV and we gave him the name of what we call Mitch McConnell – for better or worse.

Our interview episode is host to an amazing guest this week – Dr. Nneka Jones Tapia, Managing Director of Justice Initiatives at Chicago Beyond. Dr. Jones Tapia provides a lens on incarceration and its impact inside and outside of prison walls. From her work with the system and as a psychologist she helps paint the picture of what incarceration does to the people incarcerated, their families, their communities, and other stakeholders. In our conversation, she also provides insights on how to change the system through her work at Chicago Beyond, and create systems-level change. We also chat terms, from the difference between jail and prison, to the prison pipeline to collective trauma, and more.

Available on the airwaves and Youtube every Tuesday and Wednesday, Girl and the Gov, The Podcast is an extension of Girl and the Gov®'s mission to provide a platform for Millennials, Zennials, and Gen-Z to engage with the evolving political sphere in an approachable, digestible, and accessible way. Ballot Measures x 2 with Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project & Amy Fitch Heacock, Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom
It’s our 100th episode and as Obama would say, it’s a BFD. It’s a BFD not just because we’ve made it to the 1-0-0, BUT because we have a special double header episode with two kickass, badass, politicos. The episode is focused on ballot measures, specifically ballot measures as they relate to reproductive rights. Our interviews touch on the various processes per state on jumpstarting a ballot measure, what the journeys look like for getting them on the ballot, direct democracy, petitioning, and so much more. Basically, welcome to ballot measure 101. Oh, and the amazing guests?? Fine, we’ll spill – we’re joined by Kelly Hall, Executive Director of the Fairness Project who gives all the details on Michigan’s repro rights ballot measure, and Amy Fitch Heacock, of Arizonans for Reproductive Freedom who shares the 411 on AZ’s battle for a ballot measure and what’s ahead in the fight for 2024.
We’re grateful for these convos and we’re grateful for our listeners. Cheers to episode 100 and to 100 more :) We love you guys!

Reforming SCOTUS with Gabe Roth, Executive Director of Fix the Court
After a brutal last session with SCOTUS, there were sighs of exasperation and many a discussion about how the Court got to place it’s at. In the same vein, there were many discussions about possible SCOTUS reforms, i.e. how to change the court so that it once again works for the people and not for a supercharged, superfunded majority. We hosted one of those conversations with Gabe Roth, Executive Director of Fix the Court, who focuses on – you guessed it – how to reform the court via policy. In our chat, we get into possible solutions like term limits, and discuss big loopholes surrounding media and ethics when it relates to how the court operates. We also talk about the talking point meets policy suggestion that is expanding the Court – the good, the bad, and ugly with it. If you’re curious about how to fix SCOTUS, this episode is going to fit the bill.

WTF is inflation?! With CNBC Contributor and Founder at New Street Advisors, Delano Saporu
At this point, we’ve heard the word inflation, on average, 10 million times per day since this spring. It’s the word of (every) day, the topic of the moment, and perhaps the campaign weapon of choice for Republicans going into the midterms. And for that reason, and perhaps 10 million more, it’s pretty key to be tuned into what inflation actually is, what causes it, what reduces it, what people (politicians included) can do or not do about it, and so on. Since we’re not math girls (we wish we were but alas we can’t win ‘em all), we brought in our go-to econ expert, CNBC Contributor and Founder at New Street Advisors, Delano Saporu to answer all of our q’s – and yours too! Many an audience q was answered and we love to see it.

TikTok Tea, The BS On The DCCC, and Running For Congress With Miami City Commissioner & Congressional Candidate (FL-27), Ken Russell
If you’ve heard of Ken Russell’s campaign for Congress, it might be because you’re deep in FL politics, but more likely than not it’s because of the TikTok stardom he has come into over the last year. The TikTok talent knows a thing about politics (hello, currently is a Miami City Commissioner), and how to meet people (voters) where they are (sound familiar), which is social media. His TikTok is a master class on how to show authenticity and transparency for candidates up and down the ballot, and we talk about why this is still being slept on by some of the major dem orgs. We also talk about the inner workings there (cough cough the flip flopping he experienced), the tea around Miami politics, and the impetus for his political career in the first place.

The 411 on Lt. Governors, VT Politics, and more with Lt. Governor of VT and Congressional Candidate, Molly Gray
Another day, another mysterious elected position explained! In this episode, we cover lieutenant governors, a role that not all states have, that differs in role per state, and makes us more curious than George. To answer all of our q’s, we brought the expert in – Lt. Governor of Vermont, Molly Gray – who got us squared away with answers galore. Butttt, there’s more, because Molly is also running for Vermont’s one Congressional Seat (yep, you heard that right, the Green Mt. State only has one seat) and we get into the issues she’s running on and what she wants to make happen in Congress.

The Key to Protecting Democracy - Secretaries of State with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson
There is something in the water in Michigan, because the executive branch is home to THREE absolute powerhouse women in politics, one of which is Secretary of State, Jocelyn Benson. At the forefront of protecting election integrity and democracy in 2020 and onward, Secretary of State Benson truly understands the importance of this position. In our interview with her, we walk through what this vital role does, which states have them, and the various ways they work with others in government – hint: there’s even a group chat. We get into the role, we get into her reelection campaign, and we get into the tea.

Reproductive Justice with Monica Simpson, Executive Director of SisterSong
Honored, thrilled, over the moon, and beyond excited are a few of the phrases we’d use to describe how we felt going into this interview and how we feel releasing it. We had the pleasure of sitting down virtually with the incredible Monica Simpson, who is the Executive Director of SisterSong. In our conversation, we chatted about SisterSong, the work they do as a coalition, and two key topics – reproductive justice and birth justice. Through our conversation we talk about what each is, how they intersect, and how these movements not only came about but continue to be relevant (even more so) in a post-Roe world. We also discuss the overwhelmingly disproportionate impact that the overturning of Roe has on BIPOC people, and the long ignored issue of access (just because something’s legal, doesn’t mean all people have access to it).

Moore v. Harper, Independent State Leg. Theory, Constitutional Crisis with Ben Sheehan
We’re back with Ben, Ben Sheehan to be exact, for an episode on the case that has us politicos at the edge of seats – Moore v. Harper. A case that calls upon a once fringe theory, Independent State Legislature Theory, we talk about whether or not SCOTUS taking this case on will take us on the express train to a constitutional crisis. Naturally, we talk about what’s likely to happen here, how this all came to be, and what we can do now (like literally NOW) to lessen the potential impact.

Campaign Management, Strategists, Consultants, And More With Campaign Strategist, Drisana Hughes
We talk about getting involved with campaigns until the cows come home, but we’ve often left one part out – what on earth do the many roles on campaigns actually do! And, what they are specifically. And, how they operate together. And, what the experiences are with each. Basically, the fine print. To solve this, we brought in our friend Drisana Hughes who is a well-known and accomplished campaign strategist that has brought her genius to the campaigns of India Walton, Alvin Bragg, Scott Stringer, Prez Obama’s, and many more. In our conversation, we cover the many hats that are worn in a campaign and how to get into the space overall.

The Adoption Angle on Abortion Explained with Gretchen Sisson PhD, Sociologist
One of the many layers of the abortion conversation is adoption. It’s a layer we have yet to cover – until this episode, where we were joined by Gretchen Sisson PhD, Sociologist, an expert research in the field to discuss the many nuances of when the adoption conversation crosses path with the abortion conversation. Our conversation of course covers the basics on this intersection, but also what we can expect to see in the coming months ahead (or what might just be a ‘wait and see’).

Political Influencing & Online Activism with Katie Grossbard, Founding Member of i am a voter
If you’re not following Katie Grossbard, I’m going to need you to kindly go follow her, rn. Okay, fine, you can finish reading this description first. She is not only a founding member of the popular voting information resource - i am a voter - but she’s quite the online activist herself. Known for her roundups of top tweets on all-things politics and her in the know shares on politics happening in the moment, Katie is in the game. It’s also one that we (very biased here) think more young people should jump into. In our conversation – where we mention Steve Kornacki over 500 times (take a sip of water every time you hear his name) – we go chat about how to use one’s own social media and platforms to get the vote out and get your friends engaged with civics, and politics today.

What do attorneys general do? With Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel
From the title of this episode, you might’ve gathered that this episode is a deep dive into what attorney generals do, how they’re elected, and how they work with their respective state legislatures. Okay, you might’ve just gotten the first bit on that list, but we do cover the other two as well with Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. And importantly, we cover the AG’s current run for re-election and why AG elections are so critical to protecting our democracy. Gun Harm Reduction Policies with the Mayor of San Jose, CA, Sam Liccardo
As of May 26, 2022 there had been 214 mass shootings. There have been additional since that stat was compiled by Insider. It is clear that we have a gun issue in the US (last time we checked, the numbers don’t lie). This issue needs real solutions – now, not later – and there is one elected official that has stepped by to the plate. Cue, the Mayor of San Jose, CA, Sam Liccardo who has introduced innovative gun reform policies in his city. The policy requires gun owners to pay an annual fee and attestation of insurance coverage for accidental firearm-related injury or death, and the fees collected will be donated to a nonprofit focused on gun violence reduction. Our conversation gets into the policy – and a few others – and how mayors have flexibility in testing out policies.
PS if you also spotted Maddie’s TikTok on NRA spending on Senators, we answer your comment-questions!

We could’ve chatted with Shannon on this for hours and hours, SO we will obviously be having her back for a part two later in the year. Candidates on Repro Rights Access, Red & Blue State Edition Feat. Emily Beach, Congressional Candidate (D), CA-15 & Mandie Landry, Louisiana State Representative (D), D-91
WATCH ON YOUTUBE/GO SUBSCRIBE PRETTY PLZ!
This episode is super special for a number of reasons. First things first, this is our first ever episode featuring TWO interviews. Our guests are two amazing women in politics, both Democrats running for office – one in a traditionally blue state at the federal level and one in a traditionally red state at the state level. The topic of conversation is reproductive rights, the likely overturning of Roe v. Wade, and legislation in the making and to come. Emily Beach, a Congressional candidate for CA-15 – a strongly Democratic district, gives us her take, her campaign, and how she is uniquely qualified to help protect reproductive rights at the negotiating table. State Representative Mandie Landry takes us to the situation in Louisiana, where she is fighting against a proposed bill that would make those seeking abortion guilty of homicide. She also sheds light on her campaign for State Senate and how if elected in the special election, she would be the only Pro-Choice woman in Louisiana’s senate. This episode brings two important POVs from two different political landscapes, which makes it a must-listen.

Explainer: Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization with Senior Staff Attorney at The Center for Reproductive Rights, Hillary Schneller
WATCH ON YOUTUBE/GO SUBSCRIBE PRETTY PLZ!
The headlines currently read something along the lines of “Roe v. Wade will be overturned.” But, how did we get here? What took us from almost 50 years of precedent to this unnerving outcome? A ~little~ case titled Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization paired with a conservatively stacked SCOTUS is the dual-pronged answer to that q. In this episode, we walk through the case that brought us here and the legal jargon to boot with the co-lead on the case – Senior Staff Attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, Hillary Schneller. An expert not only on this case, but the many abortion access cases she’s litigated on behalf of, Hillary knows the in’s and out’s and shares them all in our convo.

Electing pro-choice candidates at every level is vital. This week’s episode takes a tour around the organization, its goals, and how it supports candidates. In conversation, we also chatted about Maine politics from the former elected official (teaser: she took office at just 24 y/o). Oh, and wait, wait, we also talk about strategies for GOTV – basically all the good stuff.

Some names in politics are infamous – two of them are in the title of this episode. What they also have in common, is that they’re running for the same Congressional seat for North Carolina. District 11 to be exact. Currently held by infamous person one – Madison Cawthorn (R), the race is heating up. Yes, even in primary season (insert rant here about how vital participating in primaries is here). Infamous person two is making sure of that in her run against the Congressman, with a pragmatic approach and deep understanding of North Carolina politics. That person is Rev. Funding Gap: State vs. Federal Races with Melissa Walker, Head of Giving Circles at The States Project
It’s far from unknown that to run a campaign in this day and age, fundraising is critical. Money, money, money, as they say is a key consideration as to whether a campaign will be successful or not. You’d think it would be based on who’s the best possible representative for a community…but alas, that’s a rant for another day. In this episode, we explore the difference between how state and federal campaigns are funded, AND importantly, how Republicans and Democrats have a very different approach to it all. Florida Debrief with Congressman Charlie Crist (FL-13), Fmr. Governor of FL, AND Candidate for Governor of FL
Florida has been hitting the news cycle BIG TIME these days. We wish we could say it was because they were having a puppy convention or something just as cute and insta-worthy, but unfortunately, the current Governor Ron DeSantis and his Republican state legislature have made sure that anything they do is FAR from cute. From the Don’t Say Gay bill to a 15-week abortion bill passed in the middle of the night, it’s safe to say we’ve had some questions as to what on earth is going on in FL. Cue our guest – Florida Congressman Charlie Crist (FL-13) who is running for Governor. Now before you okay, cool, can’t wait to hear from this elected and candidate’s position – we need you to get even more excited. Why? Because Congressman Crist was previously Florida’s Governor…as a Republican. A now Democrat, he brings a particularly interesting dialogue to our conversation on politics today in Florida and across the country.

TW: A Convo with Professor Michele Dauber, Chair of Enough is Enough Project
TW: The following episode contains conversations on spousal rape and domestic violence. This episode takes toward a topic we haven’t yet covered – the policy matters of domestic violence, spousal rape, and more. A conversation that makes you yet again scratch your head at how many laws could possibly exist (or not exist) in 2022, we discuss where policy is currently on violence against women. More specifically, through our interview with Professor Michele Dauber, Chair of Enough is Enough Project, we also learn about the initiative that Enough is Enough is working on, which is to make violence against women a voting issue.

Tapping into understanding what this means as a whole, what corporations are doing (or not doing) in terms of moving the social impact needle, and more, our conversation looks at the power consumers (it’s kind of like another ballot box if you will).
