Episode 8 | Conversations Series | Realizing Your Dreams: What Happens to a Dream Deferred? w/ Dr. Marcelle Haddix

What's Up, Let It Go, Squad! I am so excited to share the conversation in this episode with you!

In this episode, I had the privilege of chatting with one of my beloved yoga sisters who is doing amazing things to help black women and girls in her local community of Syracuse, NY.

Dr. Marcelle Haddix is a 500-hour certified registered yoga instructor and founder of zenG Yoga who specializes in yoga and mindfulness for underrepresented groups and for community-based organizations with strong commitments to reproductive health and food justice. She is co-founder of the Sankofa Reproductive Health & Healing Center and founding president of Cafe Sankofa Cooperative in Syracuse, NY. She also practices veganism and healthy, soulful living.  Her community-engaged approach to yoga, wellness, and healthy living culminate in yoga and writing retreats for women and couples of color, yoga and mindfulness workshops in urban school contexts, and regular yoga classes and sister circles in the Syracuse community. In addition to her work as a yoga and wellness instructor, she is a dean’s professor and chair of the literacy department at Syracuse University and a nationally recognized literacy scholar committed to centering Black literacies in educational practices and spaces.  She facilitates literacy programs for adolescent and adult communities in Syracuse, including the Writing Our Lives project for urban youth writers and a Black women’s literary club and free library project currently housed at Café Sankofa Cooperative.  Follow her at @zengangstayoga  on Facebook and Instagram and at  www.zengyoga.com

In this episode, Dr. Haddix and I discussed the power of dreaming, staying focused on our dreams, and finding the right support system to help propel you towards the realization of your dreams. We also discussed what it can feel like when it seems like our dreams may be delayed in their full realization in the present moment. As a bonus, we also had a special chat about her recent keynote presentation on Black Futures at the 2nd Annual Speculative Education Colloquium.

So, what has been holding you back from realizing the potential of achieving your God-given dreams? Get ready to let that go!

Episode 7 | Conversations Series | Healing the Pain of Being Black in America w/ Ron Walker

What's Up, Let It Go Squad! I am so excited to share the conversation in this episode with you!

In this episode, I had the privilege of chatting with one of my writing and authorship mentors, Author Ron Walker. Ron Walker has been writing, speaking, and ministering for over fifteen years now. He delivers a powerful message of faith, focus, and determination. He is a licensed and ordained Christian minister that holds degrees in Biblical Studies, Theology, Psychology, and a Master’s in Organizational Leadership. He is currently the lead Pastor of Legacy Church International based in Atlanta, GA, and the author of over a dozen books, to include his latest title: Black in America: Healing from the Past, Progressing in the Present, and Building for the Future.
You may be wondering, why did we invite a man to be a guest on a podcast geared towards women and girls? We invited him because aside from all of his accolades and accomplishments noted above, Ron Walker is a husband, father, #girldad, and leader in the body of Christ who has a powerful message for our community as a whole, regardless of your race, gender, faith, or preference I guarantee that there will be something in this conversation that will resonate with you that can help us all begin the healing process of moving forward from the pain of not only the perils of 2020 but also begin mending the wounds of deep-rooted inequities and disparities inherited from the past generations of our nation.

So what untreated pain from your past are you still holding onto? Get ready to let that go!

Episode 5 | Young, Gifted, and Black | Living for Breonna | Candice Maria

Episode 5 | Young, Gifted, and Black | Living for Breonna | Candice Maria

"To be forever young, gifted, and black is where it's at!" - Nina Simone

What's up #LetItGoSquad! This episode is focused on helping women, in particular our sisters of color with moving forward in light of the recent outcome of Breonna Taylor's case.

As a woman of faith and a woman of color, I personally have struggled with this and decided to cope with this tragedy by continuing to live and thrive and be the best version of myself that I can possibly be. Breonna was making moves and working to better her life when it was in an instant stolen from her. So I charge my fellow sisters, to keep growing, thriving, and building for yourself and all the Breonna Taylor's attached to your life. We all have at least one and we are all someone else's Breonna. Breonna was a sister, a daughter, a friend and so much more!

We must continue to live on for our sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends spurring one another on in love, and encouraging one another to never settle and to become the best version of ourselves that God designed us to be! "Young, Gifted, and Black! And that's a Fact!" - Nina Simone

Episode 4: Racial Restoration Part 3 | Education facilitates Empathy | Candice Maria

Episode 4: Racial Restoration Part 3 | Education facilitates Empathy | Candice Maria

Hello, Let it Go! Family
In this episode I will be wrapping up with Part 3 of my 3 part series on Racial Restoration with our topic Education Facilitates Empathy!
The month of July continued to bring up many noteworthy concepts and figures who’s empathy for oppressed people left a profound impact on our nation:
People like Congressman John Lewis: who’s leadership and bravery during the Civil Rights era and his continuous pursuit of equality during his decades in Congress all the way up to his dying day, caused us to believe in and Stand for that “Good trouble” as he called it.

Amidst a summer season of heightened racial injustices and protests, a well-known and well-respected holiday brought about a reminder for all people, that the fight for freedom for all is not over! The highlighting of the reciting of the Fourth of July speech given by Frederick Douglas in 1852, recited by his descendants entitled “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” put into #Perspective a reminder for all Americans that Independence day was not always so celebratory for all Americans, and in today’s current climate, it's becoming more and more blurred and difficult to believe that All Americans truly have their Constitutional freedoms.
We have to #ListenAndLearn because Education Facilitates Empathy! Acknowledge the truth and seek out a solution, and at all times don’t be afraid to get into That “Good Trouble”

Episode 3: Racial Restoration Part 2 | Purpose of Lament | Candice Maria

Episode 3: Racial Restoration Part 2 | Purpose of Lament | Candice Maria

This week's episode deals with the purpose and process of LAMENT!

What makes your heart cry? I'm talking about that person,  place, thing, or idea that causes you grief, causes your soul to deeply mourn.

Lament opens one's eyes to see the transgressions, injustice, sin, etc..within and around them and gives one the humility and desire to bring it before God in complete sorrow and surrender.

Lament pulls at that root, to propel us to confess our transgressions and fall on God’s mercy, so that His character can take root in our lives,  producing the fruit of His spirit.

"When we pull our transgressions up by its root, we can kill and eradicate its fruit. Lament helps us prepare the soil of our hearts and minds to do just that."

Episode 2 | Racial Restoration Part 1 | Humility and Awareness | Candice Maria

Episode 2 | Racial Restoration Part 1 | Humility and Awareness | Candice Maria

Take some time to reflect on the experiences in your life that have had the most influential impact on you and the person you are today. Has someone of another culture ever made an assumption about you and your culture, how did it make you feel? Is there something about your culture that you love and something that you wish was different?
Before you can fight the enemy outside, you have to first fight the enemy inside.
Heart change. Humility and awareness requires a heart change. Sometimes becoming aware shines a light on shameful secrets that many of us never want to be reminded of or much less discover about ourselves or the history of our families. Awareness can bring about feelings of guilt and shame. Shame in and of itself can be its own form of slavery, but what’s worst than that is being complicit and not acknowledging the truth. As we find in John 8:32 “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
In the wake of the unrest in our world right now, with racial injustice, killings of innocent black people, police brutality, and the like. Having a posture of awareness and humility will help you let go of pride, biased presumptions about people, and prejudices, and become like a student with a desire to learn how to implement racial restoration and equity into your life all while you unlearn and let go of racial biases.
