Is Australia a Big Enough Market to Support Another Airline?

Is Australia a Big Enough Market to Support Another Airline?

Bonza promises to be the independent low-cost airline that many Australian consumers have wished for. Still, some are sceptical that the market can support another operator.

Bonza, funded by the US private investment group 777 Partners, stated that it would begin flying next year, using Boeing 737-8 planes.

According to CEO Tim Jordan, the company’s aim would be to provide routes into leisure destinations where connections constrain travel via big cities.

However, breaking into Australia’s duopoly airline business is a far easier process than it appears.

European Travel Stalled: Greece and Turkey Lose Market Due to Seasonality

Europe’s travel sector has still not taken off, in the way that we had hoped: despite the introduction of the Green Pass and the easing of restrictions, the recovery of pre-COVID flows is still a long way away from our current reality. The increase in demand during the summer season did give a boost to European tourism; however, the boost was cancelled out by the Delta variant outbreak, leaving the European travel market stagnant. Over the last thirty days, demand for flights to Europe has remained largely static, varying by only 2.1% compared to the same period last year.

National Cabinet leaves us in the dark about reopening the nation, so we’re left joining the dots

National Cabinet leaves us in the dark about reopening the nation, so we’re left joining the dots

National Cabinet met on Friday after a week of intensifying debate about the vaccination thresholds in the national plan for reopening the nation.

While expectations for the meeting were high, there was no showdown — at least as far as we know.

The current plan is vague, with words such as “may occur” and only subject to “in principle” agreement.

And the Doherty Institute modelling, which underpins the plan, acts as a fig leaf for the Commonwealth government to hide behind. So the plan has survived to live another day.

Deferring the day of reckoning has papered over the cracks. National Cabinet is holding tight for another week and awaiting further modelling.

A decision to hold tight is likely a compromise between the three factions in the virtual meeting room. But it leaves many questions unanswered.

We have three factions

1. Commonwealth and NSW

In one faction, you have the Commonwealth and New South Wales, both committed to easing restrictions according to the vaccination thresholds set out in the Doherty report: 70% and 80% of the population aged 16 and over.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison probably wanted to hold firm. After repeated failures to hit his vaccine rollout targets, he cannot afford another change in the plan.

At the same time, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has probably recognised she has lost the fight to control COVID in her state and wants political cover to claim victory. She has already announced the easing of some minor restrictions for fully vaccinated people.

2. Other states handling NSW leaks

In the second faction, you have states such as Queensland and Victoria affected by leaks of COVID cases from NSW.
These states would have wanted the modelling to reassure them their health systems would not be overwhelmed if they started to ease strong public health measures at low vaccination thresholds.

3. COVID-zero states

The third faction comprises the COVID-zero states, such as Western Australia, which would be concerned about any heightened risk of COVID leakage from other states.

These states only see downsides from easing restrictions too early, when not enough people are vaccinated. They do not want to throw away the benefits of their hard-won COVID-zero status.

P&O Australia announces surprise vaccination only policy for guests and crew.

In a surprise announcement on Friday, P&O Cruises Australia, President Sture Myrmell said that only vaccinated guests and crew would be allowed on P&O Australia’s ships when it resumed cruising.

Myrmell said governments were linking society returning to normal to sufficient numbers of Australians being vaccinated for COVID-19, adding, “P&O Cruises is the longest-serving cruise line in the country with a proud 90 year history of sailing from Australia, and we want to do our bit to get this country back up and running again”.

He added, “Governments have been connecting vaccination rates to plans to end lockdowns, border restrictions and, ultimately, re-opening Australia”, adding, “In addition, our research shows that the vast majority of our guests want to cruise with other vaccinated Australians.”

Hawaii governor says now not a good time to visit so “Lei Off”!

Hawaii Governor David Ige has asked asked visitors and residents to reduce travel to the islands while the state struggles to control COVID-19 as the highly contagious delta variant spreads in the community.

The Travel Industry Today report says while stopping short of a mandate, Gov. David Ige wants travel limited to essential business only through the end of October.

He said, “Our hospitals are reaching capacity and our ICUs are filling up”, adding, “Now is not a good time to travel to Hawaii,” and, “It will take six to seven weeks to see a significant change in the number of COVID cases”, and, “It is a risky time to be travelling right now”, adding, Everyone, residents and visitors alike, should reduce travel to essential business activities only.”

Hong Kong And Singapore Travel Bubble Burst Indefinitely

Hong Kong And Singapore Travel Bubble Burst Indefinitely

The governments of Hong Kong and Singapore have decided to abandon plans for the long-delayed Air Travel Bubble (ATB) between the two cities.

The ATB was supposed to begin in November 2020, but it was postponed due to an increase in Covid-19 cases in Hong Kong. The launch date was eventually pushed back to May 26, 2021, only to be pushed back again due to an increase in cases in Singapore.

Singapore’s Ministry of Transport stated in June that it would revisit the ATB in July, but both countries have now issued statements confirming that further discussions will not take place.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government cited “differences in the anti-epidemic strategies currently employed by the two places,” while Singapore’s Ministry of Transport stated, “In Singapore, a substantial proportion of our population is fully vaccinated.” Hong Kong is also gradually vaccinating its population. Both parties are concerned with keeping our populations safe and minimising the risk of imported cases.

“But our strategies differ, with Singapore now taking steps towards becoming a Covid-resilient nation. Against this backdrop, both parties agreed that it would not be possible to launch or sustain the ATB in its present form.”

Hong Kong said that Singapore’s new strategy meant that “the basic premises that underpin the ATB have changed”.

Singapore, on the other hand, announced that it will unilaterally allow quarantine-free entry of Hong Kong visitors beginning August 20.

Restrictions continue to apply to visitors arriving in Hong Kong from Singapore, despite the Singapore MoT’s statement that “Hong Kong will continue to consider adjusting its border measures to facilitate visitors from Singapore entering Hong Kong.”

More Than 20 Airlines Have Said “C-ya” To Sydney

More Than 20 Airlines Have Said “C-ya” To Sydney

Episodes with music are only available on Spotify.

The border closure has taken its toll on Australian aviation, with Sydney losing more than 20 airlines since the outbreak began.

Last week, Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert confirmed the loss of airline business to the media and investors. The airlines that have ceased service in Sydney range from small regional carriers to global ones.

The only European airline that flew into Sydney was among the international airlines that declared bankruptcy early in the downturn. British Airways’ daily Boeing 777 flights will be discontinued in April 2020. Air India only resumed flights to Sydney in 2013 after a long absence from the Australian skies. Those flights were also cancelled in 2020.

The only South American airline that flies to Australia was also absent from Sydney. After only going nonstop between Santiago and Sydney in 2019, the airline ceased operations in Sydney in 2020. Samoa Airlines, a small Pacific Island airline, is also no longer present in Sydney.
