Globetrottin ADs - S4E18 - Marketing the Front Porch
A topic that can be very important for entire school communities but often gets pushed to the back burner is the focus of this episode where we are joined by Julien Draghi the Athletics Director at AIS Vilnius in Lithuania.
The marketing of our Athletics and Activity programs can have a mammoth effect on the students and staff already in our school but also help us bring even more through the door. A few episodes ago we had on Carol, Rich and Mike to talk about their book "Leadership with Legacy" (click HERE to check it out) and one of their favorite chapters is called the Front Porch meaning that Athletics is normally the first thing people see and come into your school for like the front porch of a house.
Nick, Matt and Julien talk about not only the importance of keeping up the appearance but also how you can do it. They use AIS Vilnius as a focal point of the conversation because of the tremendous amount of work Julien (and his wife) have done in the past year to elevate the level of pride at AISV but also its status in the local community.

Globetrottin ADs - S4E8 - Ido YaffetPedro Mental Strength Activist
In this episode of the Globetrottin’ ADs, sponsored by Kukri Sports, Nick keeps the ship sailing with Matt out sick and has an interesting conversation with Ido Yaffet-Pedro. Ido, who joins the show from Israel, has coached volleyball in schools in Vietnam, the Netherlands and Israel and has created a program to help coaches make a more meaningful impact.
Primarily, Ido talks about ‘his why’ and also what THE INNER C.R.E.D.I.T CREATOR is all about but Nick and Ido, who first met in Brussels at the Coaching for a Greater Purpose conference. go back and forth about a few things that should keep people ‘curious’. Idos belief is that competitive sports stretch athletes capabilities as well as give them and the coach the stage to perform at his or her peak and that comes across in their conversation.
Ido wraps up the episode with some of his favorite things about Israel and how you can get in touch with him if you want to continue the conversation and learn more.
Until his website is ready Ido can be reached by phone and email…

For all conference information please visit https://www.adconference.org/
Phil is the current Associate Executive Director of the NIAAA but will take over the Executive Director role this January. Phil talks about what he thinks about his move and some of the changes that have already started to take place in the organization. Globetrottin' ADs - S4E6 - Double Duty
Double duty is a common occurrence for small school ADs who are most often a part time teacher and part time AD. In this episode Nick and Matt welcome two small school ADs from their local conference, DVAC (Danube Valley Athletic Conference).
Melvin Purdue (International Christian School, Vienna) and Neil Best (Budapest British International School) are both teachers and Athletic Directors at their schools performing 'double duty'. First off we get to know Melvin and Neil who are both internationals as well as a little bit about both of their schools.
Before being asked what they would do first if they had 'cart blanche' at their schools the guys talk about some of the great things about working at a small school. Of course they have picked up some things that are making their jobs a bit easier and they share those tips with listeners in the same situation. An episode wouldn't be complete without hearing some great things about their adoptive homes of Vienna and Budapest and if you do not know what a chimney cake is google that or its Hungarian name, Kürtőskalács.
Globetrottin' ADs - S4E5 - John O'Sullivan on Parents
Nick and Matt are once again joined by a best selling author and internationally known speaker. John O’Sullivan is the founder of the Changing the Game Project and the author of two #1 bestselling books. John’s work has been featured by CNN, Outside Magazine, ESPN, NBC Sports and now the Globetrottin’ ADs podcast.
John, is no stranger to international schools as he was the keynote speaker at the Coaching for a Greater Purpose conference in Brussels and has also worked with schools in Asia. John tells us a bit about himself and also what he thinks about international schools before the conversation turns to parents.
Parents are the most important people in the lives of our student athletes and we should consider them a part of our team. John talks about how important they are and also gives some tips to help get parents on board.

Globetrottin'ADs - S4E3 - How Much Is Too Much - LIVE CGP Roundtable
In this episode Nick is alone once again but only to start the episode off as it is a live recording from Brussels at the Coaching for a Greater Purpose Conference. It is a round table discussion on Sunday morning called "How Much Is Too Much" and is focused on what coaches think is too much for them to handle. In a climate that is always asking for more we want to hear from some coaches about what they think is too much or what they are willing to do.
Although the discussion does not answer this question it does have a some great discussion about what is important. No participants are mentioned but in the room of about 20 people there are a number of coaches and Athletic Directors. All participants knew that the discussion was going to be used for a podcast and agreed to be recorded

Globetrottin ADs - S3E19 - Coach Up with Andy Longley
Globetrottin' ADs - S3E18 - LTC910 Dealing with Parents
Globetrottin ADs - S3E17 - Impact of the Invasion of Ukraine
Back from a short spring break, the Globetrottin’ ADs welcome good friends Ric and Kirby to talk about the impact of the invasion on their schools.
This is an episode that transcends the normal athletics in international schools theme of the podcast and is absolutely of interest to anyone interested in some of the finer details of the invasion, especially those involved in international education.
Ric and Kirby over the course of the episode talk about where they are currently, how they managed to leave their countries, how their schools are currently functioning and the future of their schools as well as them personally. This episode is a lot to listen to and may open your eyes a bit more to what is going on but worth a listen and a share.
The invasion is also affecting countries close to Ukraine and Nick and Matt also talk about that impact on their schools but more importantly if you would like to help their school communities specifically or the Ukraine war relief in general please visit these websites and help make our international community even stronger;

Globetrottin ADs - S3E16 - Inclusive vs Conpetitive Programs: How Both Can and Should Exist
Can international schools have both inclusive and competitive programs? The guests in this weeks episode think so and that is exactly the topic of their section for the new international NIAAA course. Nick and Matt welcome Todd Parham (Activities Director - American Community School - Amman, Jordan), Chris Bishop (Athletic Director - American School of The Hague) and Mike DeNeef (Activities and Athletics Director American International School Dhaka - Bangladesh) to the show as they continue there series on the new NIAAA course LTC 910 that will be taught for the first time December at the National Conference in Nashville Tennessee.
Of course the guys lay out the sections of their course and the main course objectives. Some of those being to identify characteristics (positive & negative) of competitive and inclusive sport models and to help schools develop their own belief system related to sport participation. One of the main reasons that this particular topic is a ‘hot topic’ is because many stakeholders that are involved in athletics (players/coaches/parents/administrators/etc..) have widely divergent feelings on this issue. Finding the right balance in international schools is tricky and depends on many and often conflicting factors.
The five guys, who are in all different cities around the world have some good discussions about this topic but also what it is like to have AD colleagues that you trust, share with and learn from. Some of the biggest takeaways from the course, without giving too much away, are;
- Have the ability to assess their own school’s sports philosophy as well as having additional tools to address any deficiencies in their programs.
- Knowing that there is no right or wrong international school’s sports program model and knowing you can change any current structure to meet the needs of their individual school communities.
- It is possible to account for both high performance and inclusion in your program.
After some words about our sponsors Kukri Sports and Coach Evaluator the three guests share some great aspects of their current homes of the Netherlands, Jordan and Bangladesh. There is now only one part of the LTC 910 to talk about… stay tuned.

Globetrottin' ADs - S3E15 - Hotels vs Homestays
Recorded back on March 1st, Nick and Matt are once again joined by other Athletic Directors as they dive back into their series on the new NIAAA course LTC910. This episode is on Homestays versus Hotelstays and joining the podcast are the three authors of this section; Sharon Leung the Athletic Director at Hong Kong International School and Catherine 'Kathy' Tanco-Ong the Director for Student Activities at Brent International School in Manilla, Philippines and Matt himself.
To start us off Sharon and Kathy give us an update from where their schools currently are in Hong Kong and Manilla which turn out to be very different. Diving into the topic Matt gives us an outline of the main sections and then Kathy and Sharon talk about who the course is aimed at and what it can do for you.
Homestays versus Hotelstays are a main topic of conversation for ADs and despite what Nick thinks Sharon talks about why it is such a hot topic and how the course can help. Kathy, Sharon and Matt then share what their conferences are currently using and if they think that is the right fit for them. It has been a while since the last 910 episode so there is a brief update on where the entire course is right now and where you can take the course for the first time. The last part of the discussion has the authors talk about their biggest take away from the course
After messages from Kukri and Coach Evaluator and before they go the guests talk about their favorite things about their long-time homes of Hong Kong and Manilla. Thank you to our sponsors; Kukri Sports and Coach Evaluator

Globetrottin' ADs - S3E14 - Coaching for a Greater Purpose Conference
Lee Rosky, the Athletic Director from The International School Brussels joins Nick and Matt for a unique and interesting episode of the Globetrottin’ ADs sponsored by Kukri Sports and Coach Evaluator.
Lee is a Canadian who has lived and worked in a few countries over the years but has called Brussels Belgium home for almost 10 years. After hearing a bit about Lee, the conversation turns to high school football or American football for some of our listeners. ISB is one of the only international schools in the world that has an American football team and we get a glimpse into what that is like organizationally and for their school community.
However, there is a greater purpose to the pod and that is an in-person conference in Brussels this August 19th, 20th and 21st. The Coaching for a Great Purpose Conference was actually ready to go in Dusseldorf but was delayed because of covid and has emerged in Brussels. Lee talks about the origins of the conference it self, who its for and what it hopes to achieve.
The keynote speaker is John O’Sullivan who is an internationally known speaker for coaches, parents and youth sports organizations, and has spoken for TEDx, the US Olympic Committee, and many other national and international committed. Please check out Johns website https://changingthegameproject.com/
The conference homepage has more information about the conference schedule, registration and how you can speak at the conference as well. Do not miss the last section of the website ‘Tackling Elephants’ https://www.cgpconference.com/
We hope that the international community rallies behind this great new initiative and joins us in Brussels in August.

Nick and Matt are honored to have a multiple #1 New York Times bestselling author joining them. Nathan Whitaker was a two sport college athlete who became a lawyer and worked in football administration for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, even winning a Super Bowl ring. Now as a full time speaker and author Nathan has had 11 books on the bestseller list and has started to work with international schools on coach development.
To kick the episode off Nathan shares some stories about how he got to be an author. From playing football under Steve Spurrier to shifting into the corporate world and then transitioning into writing. There are some great wisdom shared about dealing with adversity as well as a funny story about a cookie bouquet
His top 3 book recommendations are’ Quiet Strength, Soul of a Team and Snap Decision. The last one being the only one not on Nicks book shelf yet. The meat of the episode focuses on coach development and the program that Nathan ran with Chris Mott and coaches at the International School Bangkok. Regardless of what the program is, Nick talks about the importance of having one program that all coaches at a school work on together so they can have a common language and be able to discuss and work through that program together.
The 7 topics of Nathans program for ISB were; Mindset of a Leader, 7 Es of Developing Leaders, Soul of a Team, Exploring Motivation, Championship Resilience, Talking to Ourselves and Affecting Meaningful Change. However, Nathan shares how that can be customized for individual situations and students. Globetrottin' ADs - S3E9 - NADC Round Table
The GTADs missed their by-weekly episode but for good reason... the NIAAA & NFHS National Conference in Denver Colorado. The guys taught classes, led and moderated workshops and had committee meetings to prepare for but during the conference Nick and Matt got some time to sit down with some good friends to record a very different type of episode.
Joining Nick and Matt are Dave Horner (ICS Zurich), Chris Mott (IS Bangkok) and Scott Hibbard (AS Dubai) in this round table discussion at their AirBnB in downtown Denver. First and foremost the guys have a lot of fun sitting back and chatting and a lot of the discussion was left on the cutting room floor.
The guys do discuss their best part of the conference, the vendor show, DeForest Day, and networking before they get into some hot topics at their schools. Nick talks about what his athletes are like after the covid break. Chris talks about pd for coaches while Dave mentions the roller coaster of covid restrictions. Scott shares new regulations in Dubai and Matt wonders about regional conference changes.
As always we are thankful for our sponsors; Coach Evaluator and Kukri and would love for you to connect with us on Twitter or Facebook.
