81: Sharing her mental health story, empowering herself and others - with Naomi Fryers
Story telling is a powerful way to reduce stigma and raise awareness around mental health. Naomi Fryers had a breakdown and was removed from her home by police and taken to a mental health ward. In her words, she hit rock bottom and over time embraced her story, growing through adversity to tell her own story with an empowering ending. Naomi Fryers is a writer, mental health survivor and advocate and TEDX Speaker. Today on mental health awareness day I am chuffed to share this very real chat about what she has learnt about growth and using her voice to advocate for others, particularly women in the system. She is passionate about giving young people the microphone empowering them to tell their stories. Naomi is authentic, courageous and awesome. Her hardest times have given her strength, resilience and compassion which we can all read about in her book ‘A Very Long Way’. As you continue your growth, please check out her book is about her experience living and thriving with a mental illness. Please note that this episode touches on mental health challenges and trauma as well as suicide. It is a very real and solution orientated conversation however elements could be triggering for those who have experienced mental health challenges. Please access support if you are experiencing challenges. On World Mental Health Day (October 10, 2021) writer, Naomi Fryers will release her debut novel, A Very Long Way. A hopeful non-fiction narrative that provides a rare but relatable insight into the lived experience of an ordinary Australian with significant mental health struggles. Almost forty-five percent of our population will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetime and research shows that there is a deficiency in the quality of care provided to them. A Very Long Way explores these inequalities and disparities to reveal Naomi's tenacious journey towards recovery, during which she learned many key life lessons. One of the main ones being, the importance of embracing natural self-expression as a means of rediscovering an innate sense of self. A Very Long Way uses her real-life example of overcoming, as a basis of proof that surviving can translate into future thriving, for those determined to commit to healing. Her thoughtful writings have graced the pages of many celebrated publications including The Huffington Post and Elephant Journal. Naomi has also worked in a professional capacity in both not for profit and government organisations, advocating for progressive and systemic changes to the mental health sector. Fifty percent of sales generated from A Very Long Way will go directly towards Black Dog Institute. A not for profit organisation dedicated to creating mental health education programs to help raise awareness, create real world solutions and help prevent suicide Resources: Naomi Fryers: www.naomifryers.com ORDER Book: A Very Long Way - www.kmdbooks.com/product-page/a-very-long-way Black Dog Institute: www.blackdoginstitute.org.au We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 80: Outsource stuff, insource joy - with Eliza Ludwig
What would you pay not to do? That is what Eliza Ludwig (Money Coach) and I chat about today. Her ideas cross the transactional tasks stuff and the transformational changes we can make if we challenge why we do what we do.  For example healthy nutrition is important to you but you are grabbing takeout food a few times a week and wishing you could afford a house cleaner. A clear sign it is time to check in with your values to decide what you could pay not to do in an aligned way. If you find yourself thinking “I can’t afford it”, “I don’t have time” or “I am not good with numbers” and you are ready for increased joy in your life then this episode is for you.  Some key points: You can pay to outsource almost anything  Insourcing joy is all up to you  Your values and your skill levels can guide decisions Money is often the perceived barrier Time freedom is often the reward  Eliza Ludwig - LinkedIN: www.linkedin.com/in/elizaludwig/ The Flow Society: www.theflowsociety.com.au Related Episodes: 71: Ditch the budget & grow your money mindset - Heidi Rumohr https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/71-ditch-the-budget-grow-your-money-mindset-heidi-rumohr/id1517210258?i=1000527182770 ********************************************************************* We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 78: Managing & healing energy, acclimatizing to impermanence and being less 'other focused' by setting boundaries - with Jessica Keats
Episode Notes 10 years ago if someone said to me that they were off to see their Energy Healer, I would have probably judged them as a bit strange out of lack of awareness and experience. Energy? Healing? I was deeply into acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and personal development but energy healing sounded a step too far. Now I am now that person. My energy healer is in my growth collective. Enjoy this soulful, reflective and growthful chat I had with Energy Healer, secret weapon and fellow SheEO activator, Jessica Keats. We all have healing to do when it is safe and the time is right. This chat will nourish and recharge your spiritual energy: Energy is how you feel and react Energy promotes or depletes wellbeing Tune in to when you need recovery afterwards Embracing impermanence helps acclimatize to new directions We are all experiencing 'energetic' and 'in real life' changes now Self-sacrifice becomes a lifestyle Protect energy & empower others by holding boundaries https://www.jessicakeats.com/flow https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessicakeats/ We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 76: Productivity Shame Reframe - with Kristin Swanson
Episode Notes Today we chat about productivity for the now.  Key takeaways include: Shame is your cue to shift something up - start with your energy  Getting clear on what is most important is half the battle - know your priorities Managing yourself & health must be high in the priority mix Your brain is bias to the negative so consciously move your attention to what have done  Avoid the "all or nothing" monster instead aiming for 'the messy middle' aiming for progress not perfection Progress is taking one next step not eating the whole elephant  There is magic in consistent daily small action and it adds up  Set aside 15 minutes in the morning before you dive into your day to complete something important and get a positive halo over your day  Yes you can 'find' 15 minutes! 'Out' yourself on productivity shame and tell someone else to reduce the grip of your story “The story I am telling myself right now is….”  You've got this - stay curious and compassionate.  Kristin Swanson: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ks-consulting/ We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 74: - From Survival to Success on your terms - with Jo Stone
Episode Notes: What is not working for you right now? Getting unstuck starts with clarifying what is not working in your life and how that is showing up. Tired? Overwhelmed? Busy? Always busy. Rather than pushing on, we challenge you to acknowledge it and build your 'courage muscle' by gaining support to figure out what you do want.  Today we chat with coach Jo Stone. Jo is the founder of Blissful Breadwinner. Like me, she is passionate about supporting ambitious women create balance between career and family, without stepping back or burning out.  Jo shares the big brave decisions and changes she has made to prioritise herself and her personal development. She chose health, freedom and aliveness instead of a big house and the security of a corporate leadership role.  We challenge you to take your development into your own hands and question the conditioning that other's needs are more important than yours. Your growth starts with you but doesn't end with you. Become a growth seeker rather than crawling out of a crisis. Ask for help and receive it.   Jo Stone - Blissful Breadwinner: https://www.blissfulbreadwinner.com/ Relevant Episodes Ep 5: Navigating Breast Cancer - Kristen Swanson - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/5-navigating-breast-cancer-with-kristin-swanson/id1517210258?i=1000483020735 Ep 16: Burnout: A Story of recognising, recovering and changing - Clea Wallage - https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/16-burnout-story-recognising-recovering-changing-clea/id1517210258?i=1000487710880 We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 66: How to create a morning routine for a productive energised day - with Alex White, Toby Smith & Pete Fletcher
Today three dynamic and very real senior leaders share how they spend their mornings to set themselves up for a productive, engaged day. Exercise is a cornerstone but so is starting small and keeping it simple. A morning routine is a habitual process of starting the day. This is performed almost subconsciously and conserves energy. When this is disrupted data shows that it is harder to focus and perform at work. Alex White - Business Manager GSK  Toby Smith - Director of Sales Mondez International  Pete Fletcher - Managing Director World Challenge Group  These busy leaders share what works for them and some tips for you to consider:  🔸 Reduce decision fatigue by building a habit  🔸 Make habit formation easy by starting small (10 minutes of movement or stillness for example)  🔸 Enjoy benefits from a morning routine across your day - physical, mental and emotional energy  🔸 Something is better than nothing and imperfect is OK  🔸 Exercising is the cornerstone to charge physical energy  Resources:  - Hear me talk about my morning routine back in Go To Grow Podcast Episode 10: Establishing A Morning Routin‪e: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/10-establishing-a-morning-routine/id1517210258?i=1000485745700 - Learn more about renewing your energy here Performance Pyramid HBR Article: https://hbr.org/2001/01/the-making-of-a-corporate-athlete Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 63: Becoming a leadership team beats being a team of leaders - with Dr Pauline Lee
Melissa and Leadership/Teams expert Dr Pauline Lee chat about why it is well worth teams doing "the work" to become a leadership team rather than a team of leaders. What can your team do if it is clear on why it exists? How energising is it to be on a team that is headed in the same direction, is supportive and achieving fantastic outcomes. Dr Pauline Lee shares a real team journey of increasing impact and shifting behaviour which reminds us of the importance of trust and authenticity and helps show us how to get there.   𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 🔸 A team has higher levels of effectiveness and performance. A working group can serve a purpose like a task force or committee). 🔸 It is essential that a team knows why it exists  🔸 Despite stated commitment to being authentic to benefit the team, hidden competing commitments such as playing it safe to look good prevent change (immunities to change) 🔸 Surfacing the individual and collective 'stories' helps the team break away from habits and patterns of thinking that are not serving the team 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀: Dr Pauline Lee: www.leargas.com.au/ Immunity to Change by Robert Kegan: https://www.gse.harvard.edu/hgse100/story/changing-better#:~:text=Based%20on%2030%20years%20of,distortions%20that%20keep%20you%20from Scaling Leadership by Robert J Anderson: https://scalingleadership.com/ The Wisdom of Teams by John Katzenbach: https://hbr.org/1993/03/the-discipline-of-teams-2 Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 50: How to Find your Voice - with Lucy Cornell
Did your parents tell you "children should be seen and not heard"? That girls need to be nice and polite? Not to be "bossy"? Like me you might repeat some of those phrases and catch yourself. How do we support those children to find and keep their their voice? How do we hold ourselves back from being seen and heard in the workplace? What can we do to grow in and beyond the literal voice?  This week I chat with the deeply experienced voice coach and advocate Lucy Cornell who supports us in speaking up. Lucy Cornell is the Founder and CEO of the Cornell Voice Advisory, a global specialist on the speaking voice for business leaders.  Some key takeaways:  The cultural context you operate in impacts the inclusion of diverse voices  Start early - even when whining, give our kids a chance and platform to speak Be clear on our intention for wanting a voice in a given moment  Know what your flame is to want to speak - if you are passionate your voice is much more likely to be heard Jump in and stay present to take responsibility for what you have said  This is a great episode to share with teams in your workplace. Let me know what resonates. Enjoy this free resource from Lucy 'Give girls a voice'  Daughters - Lucy Cornell.pdf  I hope that you are enjoying experiencing the Go To Grow podcast as I am making it. 44: Growing as a Couple - with Stewart MacGowan
“Growing old with someone else is beautiful, but growing old while being true to yourself is divine.” – Dodinsky   Do you wish your partner would get growing? Does your partner put growth pressure on you?  My husband Stewart made an interesting comment the other day about not wanting to be left behind on the 'grow train'.   So today we chat about his growth amongst our growth and growing our self-made tribe and business. 42: How to Hack your way to Happiness - with Penny Locaso
“We are beginners in this new life” (Penny Locaso - Happiness Hacker and my guest today).   This year we are grieving and growing and we can be happy. Being happy takes practice. It is a powerful time to assess your habits, productivity, your energy and expectations of self. When do you feel alive? Happy? How could you feel that way more often? How could happiness be the journey not the destination. Together we hack our way to happiness. Penny Locaso is a former corporate exec and self described 'imperfect experimenter' on a mission to support us hack our way to happiness. She has written a book called HACKING HAPPY. You can find Penny and her resources here hackinghappy.co Penny shares tips, inspiration and experience to support us hacking our way to happiness. We discuss what happens when conventional success does not equate to happiness. Some of the great stuff: Alignment is living a life that is orientating me daily and doing things that make me feel alive. Bravely initiating life change is like turning up a light dimmer over a period of 2 years. Awareness grows on the personal impacts of values misalignment and taking responsibility for self and health. More compelling examples of less ‘work’ more creativity, more intention & impact. 40: Vulnerability, leadership and speaking truth - with Jessie Shuraleff
"The price is high, the reward is great" Maya Angelou What would change tomorrow if you gave yourself and your team full permission to integrate the joys and challenges of life into your leadership? Where have to you been holding back? What would more vulnerable look like for you? What stops you and at what cost? Today I am joined by Jessie Sharaleff and we explore her personal and professional break-throughs once she gave herself permission to acknowledge personal loss and the truth of her journey. Speaking her truth enabled others to to do the same all while unlocking great results. Jessie now has a Podcast powerfully dedicated to sharing personal stories and learning called This Is My Truth podcast. www.jessishuraleff.com Just some of the great points: - Tell your stories to build connection and impact (know/like/trust) - Create ways for others to share their stories - Provide was for people a place to hear stories that reflect their own (diversity) - Modelling authentic behavior as a manager includes apologising - Give yourself and your team overt permission to recharge I am so happy to have you here as part of the grow tribe. 38: Owning Your Mistakes - with Jon Anderson
Made a mistake lately? Of course you have. You are a grower so I remind you to embrace the 'growth mindset'. Our brains can grow. Guaranteed we will make mistakes but choosing the 'growth mindset' enables us to learn and improve versus a fixed approach bypassing growth and hunkering down in fear and judgement. Today I talk with my uncle and sports journalist Jon Anderson about the opportunity to learn from mistakes. Jon is a true grow tribe leader as he openly and courageously shares details of a personal very public mistake he made. He talks about the impact for him and others, how he navigated the situation and in taking responsibility for his growth - what he learned. Some key takeaways: - Accepting responsibility is a choice - A supportive partner was a game changer - Getting on the front foot avoids "victim" mode - Mistakes enable increased empathy for others - Laugh at yourself and unhook from criticism - People are supportive; receive the support - Shift focus to impact and legacy This Podcast is new and I need your feedback and suggestions on topics, narratives and people of interest. 35: Our inner critic loves change
Today I ponder....... We can do the hard work to develop ourselves, recognising that "what got us here, won't get us there" and this is very much the case when transitioning to a managing people. Most of us have default ways of thinking and working which are either an accelerator for us or more of a hand-break. Often they are well entrenched 'coping strategies' that don't serve us any more. When we are triggered by stress, change, uncertainty it can tip us back into those coping behaviours that we have worked so hard to change. Self-doubt and unhelpful inner critique and dialogue is right up there so let's say g'day and farewell when it shows up again!   My asks: This Podcast is new and I need your feedback and suggestions on topics, narratives and people of interest. I chat with coaches Jo & Nick Bowden about running a running business together and of course growth. You do not need to be a runner, just a 'mover' to listen and learn about supportive ways to move our bodies and boost our stamina (mental, physical and emotional)  Some key takeaways: Challenge the labels you apply to yourself "I am not a runner...." As it is in business, have a plan, be patient with yourself & let the 'product' (us!)' develop over time (no perfection!) Keep it simple and be intentional about building strength - they share how  Foundation = Agility, Balance, Coordination Acknowledge business challenges but take the positives: slowing down, trying new things  Keep moving folks.  Resources https://www.runready.com.au/ https://www.instagram.com/runreadycoach/ This Podcast is new and I need your feedback and suggestions on topics, narratives and people of interest. 28: A Story of Coming Out - with Susie McNamara
Each of you - the Grow Tribe help me learn and grow rapidly. Tricky when already 6ft tall!!⠀ ⠀  This week I gained a deeper understanding of the costs, prize and growth associated with ‘coming out’. ⠀ ⠀  Susie McNamara is a real deal authentic senior leader. It is no shock she has significant impact in her organisation and beyond. ⠀ ⠀ Susie reflects on her journey coming out as a gay women in life and the corporate world. ⠀ ⠀  Some takeaways (there were many!):⠀  🌈 You can’t do great work when you feel "hollow" ⠀  🌈 Personal & professional misalignment costs ⠀  🌈 Manager/leader/parent/friend ‘pauses’ are slow torture ⠀  🌈 Symbols of safety and visible inclusion really matter ⠀ ⠀ The guru @simonsinek says ‘authenticity’ means that the way we present ourselves to the outside is a perfectly accurate representation of who we really are. ⠀ ⠀ So Grow Tribe - let’s show up. ⠀ ⠀ We are all learning here but what have you tried to make your environment safe and inclusive? 26: Navigating Divorce - with Beth Hanson
This is such a great discussion and has application well beyond the common meaning of "divorce" -  there are learnings for challenges many are confronting in 2020.  We discover that it is possible to go through such a significant and often unplanned destabilizing life change and disrupt ourselves in an ultimately positive way, and unlock growth.  We touch on 'The 5 stages of grief' - denial, anger, bargaining, sadness and acceptance were the original model to which ‘meaning making’ was added much later. This non linear process can be again applied to the current collective anxiety and loss of control. The meaning is what we uncover after event and with the benefit of some healing. We learn, heal and grow together. #bettertogether Resources: Holmes - Rahe Stress Inventory: www.stress.org/holmes-rahe-stress-inventory Harvard Business Review - Helping your team heal Article: www.hbr.org/2020/07/helping-your-team-heal Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less: www.goodreads.com/book/show/18077875-essentialism We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. Today I chat 'visibility' with Sarah Anderson who started Visibility Co with her business partner, Julia May.  Sarah is an award-winning visibility expert, strategist and mindful leadership facilitator, driven by supporting people to lead visibly wherever they are. We share a commitment to living and leading an 'integrated' life and a passion for supporting others to go to self first to unlock growth.  Consider getting more intentional about your 'visibility': Takeaways include: - Visibility = how you see yourself as much you see others; intentionally and purposefully  - Three pillars of visibility: self, others, collective  - Starting with self leads to important, often challenging but impactful breakthroughs  - As leaders we have plans for many things - but can forget ourselves!  - Our Values are SO important: they govern our alignment (and are key to authentic leadership and living)  - A great reminder to re-connect to our breath to create space  Resources:  www.visibilityco.com www.amazon.com.au/New-Republic-Heart-Awakening-Evolutionary/dp/1623170478  www.linkedin.com/company/visibilityco/  Breath work resources: www.umaspender.com/discover  Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 22: Develop Your Emotional Intelligence (it is an ability) - with Jim Grant
Episode Notes "Discomfort is the price of admission to a meaningful life" (Susan David) The discomfort is real and we have meaningful lives! Discomfort is serving a purpose and we are growing! Today we chat Emotional Intelligence and Agility to support relevant skill building and confidence as we navigate the bumps in life and leadership. Emotional Intelligence is not a choice for great leaders.  Like Susan David, my guest Jim Grant is a deep expert in Emotional Intelligence and Agility. They have worked and have a book together.    Some key takeaways from my chat with Leadership Development guru Jim Grant: EI is an 'ability' - how emotionally intelligent you are today is a piece of data  Emotions are data - not who you are but data about you Go to it and work through it - acknowledge the emotion and then manage or risk health and other areas of life  Be ware of the 'double dip': feel guilty then feel bad about feeling guilty (or stressed about being stressed) ‘Are you ok?’ Is more important than ever followed by ‘tell me more?’ Values come into play here - what is important to you sits arm and arm with emotional ability EI is not ‘soft & mushy’ this is about great outcomes and solutions Resources: Whole Brain Child - Daniel Segal: www.booktopia.com.au/the-whole-brain-child-daniel-j-siegel/book/9781921844775.html Susan David Ted Talk: www.ted.com/talks/susan_david_the_gift_and_power_of_emotional_courage?language=en Emotional Intelligence Workbook - Susan David & Jim Grant: www.jimgrant.com.au/online-store/ Susan David book Emotional Agility: www.susandavid.com/ Kate Oliver - Amygdala song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEfK4BRioZw EFT Tapping https://petastapleton.com/what-is-eft-or-tapping/ https://jimgrant.com.au/about-us/ We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. You need to listen. Let me know what resonates and what you take away. ⠀ ⠀ “It is so different from the pounding lengths of a traditional pool where it is possible to drag your worries with you from one end to other. ⠀ ⠀ Here my sense of myself was altered, the cold too shocking to focus on sorrow and confusion when the useful thing was courage, and when my heart had steadied, and I realised I was not actually going to die, the exhilaration hit me and I felt dizzyingly grateful to be alive” ⠀ (Esther Freud) from the book ‘At the Pond; Swimming at the Hampstead Ladies’ Pond’⠀ Resources:  Skye Jefferys: www.skyejefferys.com Dr Hayley Dickinson: www.eatforyou.com.au Marlo Reyneke: www.innatehome.com.au We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 17: Give Feed Forward not Feedback
At home, work and in life in general we tend to either avoid giving/receiving feedback all together or we approach as a task to tick off our list without considering what we are really trying to achieve. The opportunity is to re-frame this and actually boost performance and development not just deliver a backward looking thought, emotion or fact with little impact.   Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 16: Burnout: A story of recognising, recovering and changing - with Clea Wallage
Burnout was classified in May 2019 by the World Health Organisation as an 'occupational phenomenon'.  Risk factors include; increased workload and organisational changes,  "doing more with less" even if flexibility is provided. Individually we can also contribute to our Burnout risk through work and lifestyle choices, personality and stress management.  3 key symptoms to tune into:  Energy depletion  Increased mental distance from work/life  Decreased professional efficacy  Perfectionist personality traits can increase our risk: Set very high goals and standards for self, very concerned with avoiding mistakes and fear failure Language includes "should" "must"  Ask yourself: How might I (or the business cultural context I set) be contributing to burnout?  Are you taking sufficient breaks and using your leave? Where do you feel misaligned in career and/or lifestyle and what is this costing you energetically?  Key resources: Blackdog Institute Article Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction https://www.coolkarmacollected.com/course/mindfulness-based-stress-reduction/ Clea Wallage - Contacts EMAIL: clea@firstbest.com LinkedIN Instagram My asks: This Podcast is new and I need your feedback and suggestions on topics, narratives and people of interest. 15: How I “do it all” - a strong team at home
Today I ponder... I  often get asked how I 'do it all', how do you work in a senior leadership capacity, travel, keep fit, have a social life, cook, stay connected and of course be a mum to four kids?! I bypass the 'doing it all' conversation and go straight to my home team.   Teamwork starts at home and whilst that sounds cheesy, it makes all the difference when you consider what you can achieve and receive together. We have worked at this over many years, learning and challenging ourselves as we go. We now have a simple set of processes we follow to help us set goals together, considering our own individual and family needs as well as work, finances, community etc.  Annual wrap-up and reflection  Set intentions and goals together,  check-in weekly, support each other, stay aligned and flexible,  quarterly reviews.   Getting on the same page to meet the needs of yourselves and your family does not just happen organically. Work at it to avoid resentment, dysfunctional patterns, and entrenched roles and responsibilities. If you have a better name for the 'Marriage Meeting' - let me know! And don't forget to 'plan for fun!'  Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 14: Talking Cycles, Fertility & Hormones - with Lauren Curtain
Health and well-being sustains us in leadership and life. Yes organisations have a way to go to support women and men as they navigate health and life stages that impact careers and lives.  As individuals we also have work to do here to become more aware and empowered to support our own health and growth.  Today I chat cycles, hormones and fertility with Lauren Curtain - Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner: Understanding and nurturing hormones Taking ownership and seeking support versus settling or deferring   The wisdom and momentum of tuning in to your own health and energy This for women and their men and is a conversation we will continue.  One of my great hopes is that my 2 daughters won't learn the hard way about women's health like I did. I have learned so much on my journey through fertility challenges, childbirth, pregnancy loss, pushing through monthly cycle, finally being diagnosed celiac, having adrenal fatigue, chronic sinus issues, injuries and unexpected early peri-menopause. My eventual learning is to listen to my body and utilise the support of a few select "alternative" practitioners and not deferring to  traditional medicine only as it has let me down consistently.    Resources & Links:   Lauren Curtain Website: www.laurencurtain.com/ Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 13: Manager Magic to accelerate performance (Part 1)
Today I ponder....... Recall your best manager and the impact? Recall your worst manager and the impact? Have no doubt about impact of managers on people and performance outcomes. If you lead or run a business and you are not taking considered action here, you are leaving performance on the table.  I know it to be true from personal experience, research and through many years in HR and business leadership. Yet it is tempting to promote people who lack core capabilities and are not provided with training/development support at a critical career stage. We lean into the technical skills or tolerate key capability gaps and the resulting consequences (think disengagement, turnover, confusion, lack of development). Accepting mediocrity is much easier than investing in clarity of expectations and aligned leadership development.  https://rework.withgoogle.com/blog/the-evolution-of-project-oxygen/ We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 12: Awesome virtual and in-person communication (Part 2) - with Carolyn Crawford
Eyes off Zoom video, fixing hair and double checking the 'appearance touch-up' setting is working.  Expectations for leaders, business owners, employees, (& outside of work) are high. Get to the heart of complex issues, be operational, be strategic, communicate the vision, the strategy and goals, be with your people, lead, follow,  build relationships, get tasks done and the list goes on.  I am yet to meet the person who lives up to all these expectations but communication is a differentiator. Communication is how we connect, influence, inspire and impact. Who was it that said, "If I had more time, I would have written you a shorter note?" Genius! We talk communication with Communication Effectiveness Coach Carolyn Crawford who has worked with over 10,000 leaders. I share Carolyn's rich, practical and supportive expertise for us to put into action right now in a 2-part episode: Part 1. Virtual meetings Part 2. Presenting: online & in-person Key takeaways: - We place unnecessary pressure on ourselves when 'presenting' to be more than we are day/day (more formal, bigger, better) - Generally we are doing better than we think we are! - Part of our presence as a communicator comes from our warmth and humanity - Talking about a topic we love or work with all day is easy, being concise and precise is harder and builds confidence and credibility - Confidence comes from preparation to land a concise, relevant message: 1. what is the action you want them to take 2. why, what is in it for them We loose the message in plethora of content (less = more) Resources: www.linkedin.com/in/carolyn-crawford-38305a5/?originalSubdomain=au  www.f2fcommunications.com.au/  Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 9: Organising & Decluttering our Homes - with Susie White
I dug deep in my pantry, wardrobe, office and mind to find the items sparking joy! I questioned if there was a was space amongst the clutter! This week we discuss 'Decluttering To Grow' with Susie White professional organiser. She helps us feel less overwhelmed, defensive and protective and more in control of our stuff rather than the other way around! Susie shares many practical tips and suggestions. Decluttering and organising strikes a growth chord for me.  What I want: ease and flow, energised focus and creativity  What I do: avoid organising and tidying, pile stuff up, prioritise other things  What I get: mental and environmental clutter, chaos and frustration! Growth and decluttering both involve diving into the mess, getting dirty and rising up changed, improved and more confident in our environment and lives.  No doubt you have heard of Marie Kondo and her motto of "keeping what sparks joy". Beyond house-hold items; people, situations and jobs may not spark joy and shall be discarded! Enjoy learning with me from Susie. Key Takeaways: - You are never going to organise your office in a weekend!  - Start with 10 min's a day to impact  - 1st step is Decluttering : letting go or the keeping decisions and process  - There is a lot of fear in letting go, we hold on for the exception!  - 2nd step is Organizing: a new system to align how we want to live  - Do the work and reap rewards  - Involves behavior change, new habits  - The process drives future decision making and sustainability  Resources: www.susiewhite.com.au  Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 8: Know Your Why
Today I ponder...... Does your motivation wax and wane? Do you need urgency and fear to propel you to react? Are you known as a reliable 'get it done' person when directed to take action? Do you get kudos and adrenaline from putting out fires? What happens in the absence of pressure and external motivators? Sustainable leadership (personally and professionally) comes from the fire within not from the 'burning platform'.  Seek out the control and ease that comes with sustainability. Put that fire on your ass out! 7: Building Inclusive Cultures - James Momon
All our open minded growers belong here as we start our exploration of 'Inclusion to Grow' this week with James Momon (Global Inclusion Exec.). We will be coming back to this topic again. And again.  Why?  It is the right and necessary thing to do in business and life  Diversity + Inclusion = bigger results (ethnic diversity most important)  We all have work to do here (for ourselves and others) This is a growth opportunity (AKA hands on & imperfect) not an intellectual exercise  James joins us from Minneapolis in the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd. He remains optimistic about seizing the opportunity for real change and impact of increased honesty and appetite for uncomfortable conversations.  Some key takeaways: Diversity includes the dimensions we do not have choice around such as race, gender and orientation. In the form of representation it is often tracked and is a starting point for business accountability and  to measure if the workforce reflects the consumers.  Hiring great diverse talent is not enough. Impact, engagement and retention result from intentional action, investment and focus in creating culture.  Diversity is being asked to the party, Inclusion is being asked to dance (Dr Heidi Grant). James adds that belonging is dancing like no-one is watching.  Belonging is the goal and we start on the path by intentionally building authentic relationships with team members beyond task (yet another reason for quality 1:1 meetings and discussions) Resources:  - Article: "Don’t Be an Ally, Be an Accomplice" @ Forge by Medium   https://forge.medium.com/dont-be-an-ally-be-an-accomplice-437869756ab5 - Dr Heidi Grant PHD: https://www.heidigrantphd.com/ - "Selective attention test" Video (experiment): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo Click here to understand how to become YOUR Chief Energy Officer with this free assessment and resources www.chiefenergyofficer.scoreapp.com We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe. 6: How to Set Boundaries
Establishing and holding boundaries is a key barrier and accelerator of performance if we are willing to look at our human tendencies to seek approval, please others and particularly in the case of women, put ourselves last. To deliver great results in business, we need to be clear on the strategy and focus so we can say an informed "hell-yeah". That yes is nothing without the 'no' that accompanies it. We dilute the results immediately by falling into the responsiveness trap, meeting ineffectiveness, treating all priorities and relationships the same. Also applies to products, services and customers. Lean into discomfort and learn to say a no or partial not just for your own satisfaction but to deliver great results. 5: Navigating Breast Cancer - with Kristin Swanson
"But good enough is what makes people drink too much and snark too much and become bitter and sick and live in quiet desperation until they lie on their deathbed and wonder: what kind of life/relationship/family/world might I have created if I were braver?" (Glennon Doyle)   Our health and life as we know is very fragile and yet we can take it for granted. Today we will talk about one person's story and journey through breast cancer and her growth as a result. Many of us know women and families impacted by breast cancer (affects 1 in 8 women) and there are many sad stories out there. My heart goes out to all those women and families. Breast cancer is not just for Mums or old people.  The good news is that 83% women survive 10+ years post diagnosis in AU and increasing focus on prevention but but the disease still frightens many women and their loved ones.  I invite you to consider challenges you have faced and what choices you made at that time? What support did you ask for (or not), who are you now because of that experience? Like me, you might resist the confronting nature of considering what you would do if you or someone close was very sick or challenged. 1: How To Build Mental Stamina - with Sharon Longridge
Episode Notes Stamina is the ability to sustain prolonged physical or mental effort. We focus on physical stamina and increasingly realise that mental stamina is just as important to high performance and is the difference between surviving and really thriving (performance, creativity and certainly connections).  As leaders and parents, it has become a much needed daily practice and without it we can make poor decisions, get stuck in the red zone, yell at the kids, beat ourselves up, loose perspective and feel so drained.  The opposite of what many of us want.   Some key messages: Managing your team's stamina is a hallmark of effective leadership even though it is not a KPI for most leaders Employees who strongly agree that they feel their manager's support are about 70% less likely to experience work burnout regularly Gallup found five factors that are most highly correlated with burnout: Unfair treatment at work Unmanageable workload Unclear role Lack of communication and manager support  Unreasonable time pressure A major source of 'energy leaking' is our inner critic, our default patterns can be frequent and exhausting ("mental self mutilation") Nuero-performance is not about the land of incense and patchouli   Practice, practice, practice!  Resources  https://www.leadium.com.au/boost-offers https://www.leadium.com.au/  https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharonlongridge/  Do Less: A Revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management for Busy Moms Paperback We hope you enjoyed the episode Visit the Go to Grow Website here: www.gotogrow.com.au  Send us an email with any thoughts, questions or ideas to stewart@gotogrow.com.au or melissa@gotogrow.com.au Thanks so much for choosing growth and being part of the tribe.
