64. The importance of fire protection and fire training for your Business

In this episode I am joined by John Allender from Advantage Fire Protection (www.advantagefire.nz) to talk about the importance of fire protection and fire training for your business.  Sadly, fires can start in any place, at any time, for any number of reasons! It goes without saying but it pays to be prepared should the worst happen so that you can protect what is most important to you. If you own a business and employ people then you will need to be compliant with Health and Safety Regulations in this area. John offers a one stop shop to supply extinguishers appropriate to intended use and fire type along with the appropriate signs and training. He can not only supply fire suppressant tools but he installs and routinely maintains them without you having to worry about a thing. John and I also managed to weave into our chat some background on John's love and dedication to Karate. There is a lot of valuable, thought provoking and interesting material in this podcast. 63: 90 Trial Periods: What has changed and what stays the same in 2024?

In this episode I am joined by one of our Associates, Sally Cunneen. Sally works in our employment and litigation team. Sally talks to me about what has changed in NZ law with respect to 90 day trial periods in the employment space. With a change of Government in 2023 the new coalition Government has opened up the use of trial periods to all employers no matter the size of the organisation and who many employees they employ. Aside from this change Sally and I deep dive the requirements, to be legal and what has stayed the same at law, the pitfalls and common mistakes, along with some other things you should be aware of regarding offers of employment and employment agreements. If you are looking to hire anyone in 2024 then you really should make sure you are up to speed with trial periods and how to use them successfully. Please note that the information presented in this podcast is not intended to be, and cannot replace, detailed legal advice. If you need help you should look to take specific advice from an employment lawyer that is relevant to your individual circumstance and business. We then investigate the impacts that Artificial Intelligence has had in this space for the business, how it can assist, its limitations and what the future may hold. I really enjoyed chatting with Andrew who is an all-round good guy, innovator and passionate business owner. The subject of teeth may seem slightly esoteric for a business podcast but trust me the story is well worth listening to and nowhere near as painful as visiting the dentist!. If you want to drill down on some inspiration for how technology might transform your business, then give this a listen.

58. Can Stress actually be beneficial for performance in the workplace?

58. Can Stress actually be beneficial for performance in the workplace?

In this episode of the Real Business Solutions podcast I am joined by Chris White from Rise Wellness (www.risewellness.co.nz). This is a welcome return to the podcast for Chris having previously guested. Chris talks to me about the concept of stress in the workplace, the narratives we tell ourselves about the nature of stress (and our responses to it) and whether a little stress is, or can be, in fact performance enhancing. It was fascinating listening to Chris unpack the concepts behind stress, the physiological responses to it, the narratives we tell ourselves about stress and how that influences our reactions. This really resonated with me as it seems many people in business (whether that be leaders, managers or team members) complain of being 'stressed out' all the time. If you want to learn more about this topic and how a small mindset change can help you turn the stress narrative around then listen to this episode. Chris kindly also makes a special offer for the first 3 listeners who email him on chris@risewellness.co.nz and mention this podcast to get a free 90 minute stress workshop for you and your team.
Finally, below you will find some useful links mentioned by Chris during the podcast to dive a little deeper on this topic: Is there a topic you want covered or a person you want to hear from? 56. The emergence of AI in business

In this episode I am joined by Max John from White-Mirror Cyber Security Awareness and Consulting to discuss the emergence of AI in business. Aside from consulting in the cyber security space, Max has a number of years’ experience in IT across a diverse range of industries and professions. Max talks with me about the emergence of AI and what it may mean alongside ChatGPT and the dangers of exposing confidential data online to AI. We then talk about the issue of early adoption of AI Solutions in business alongside a new software product to be released by Microsoft called “Copliot” which is described as an evolution of how we will interact with computing. You can find out more about Copilot here https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2023/03/16/introducing-microsoft-365-copilot-your-copilot-for-work/ if you are interested and want to keep ahead of the curve. 55. End User Cyber Security

55. End User Cyber Security

In this episode I am joined by Max John from White-Mirror Cyber Security Awareness and Consulting to talk about the topic of “end user cyber security” in your business. In this context an “end user” is anyone in your business who has access to your computer system including email and the internet, read pretty much most team members in any SME in New Zealand. Max talks with me about the importance of “end users” having a working understanding around the impact of their actions on an organisations data security. Max then explains the consulting and training that he can offer to businesses to help bolster team preparedness and vigilance for cyber threats. The reality is that cyber threats are always present to anyone in business and the consequences of suffering a cyber-attack could be devastating, both to reputation and business survival. You can have state of the art systems and software and think you are safe but all it can take is one click by a team member on the wrong thing and all your hard work can be seriously undone. If you are serious about cyber security in your business then you need to get serious about training your team about to be your first and best line of defence. If you want to know more about Max and what he can do for you and your team then drop him an email on Max.J@White-Mirror.co.nz or check him out on LinkedIn. 31. The secret to clear communication

31. The secret to clear communication

We live in an increasingly visual world. Incredibly, almost everyone has a camera in their pocket and the ability to broadcast their message to the world.

Even though we have more ways of communicating with people than ever before, most of us still struggle to 'put ourselves out there' or to speak publically in-front of an audience: Two activities business owners and professionals are frequently called on to do.

Brad McDonald is joined by Michael Philpott, New Zealand's number one expert in public speaking, presentations and pitching. Michael helps all presenters prepare for the TEDx Christchurch events, and works with anyone wanting to overcome their fears around public speaking.

Michael and Brad also talk about how people can become better networkers and communicators, including:

- What steps can you take to get more comfortable in-front of a camera?;

- How should you can adjust your style for different audiences; plus

- How to get a better Q&A response at the end of your next presentation.

30. Preparing for the next natural disaster

30. Preparing for the next natural disaster

We're no strangers to natural disasters in New Zealand. From earthquakes to volcanic eruptions, floods and forest fires, it's not uncommon natural disasters to regularly disrupt our lives and livlihoods.

Unlike the earthquake that occurred on February 22nd 2011 which pretty much came out of the blue, the extreme rain and flooding across Canterbury that happened May 2021 was predicted and expected. Local councils from Selwyn to Hurunui and Waimakariri declared states of emergency. Flood waters caused severe damage to the Ashburton bridge. Some areas of Canterbury got more than five month's worth of rain over two days. BUT, people were able to take preventative measures to reduce the damage, protect people, livestock and livelihoods.

Brad McDonald is joined by Iain Grant, a Rural insurance advisor with Vero Insurance. Iain lived in Christchurch during 2012, and shares some of his experiences on living in the shaky city.

Iain and Brad also talk about how people and businesses can prepare for the next natural disaster (whatever it may be) and what steps are going to help your insurer help you get back on your feet again, including:

- Why some natural disasters are becoming harder to predict;

- What steps you should take in the aftermath of a natural disaster; plus

- The mental toll of natural disasters.

Quick disclaimer: This advice is general, and in most cases, Iain's personal opinion. For specific advice on your policy, speak with your trusted advisor. While this information is current as of the publishing of this podcast, we can't predict what the industry will be doing in five years time. Also, in talking about the climate and weather events, neither Brad, nor Iain are scientists.

24. Can you force your employees to get vaccinated?

It's a big story in the media right now, and we're sure to see it play out in front of the Employment Relations Authority in future.

- The difference between terminating an employee and making them redundant;

- Can an employer really fire someone for not being vaccinated; plus
