Going Pro Yoga Podcast

By Michael Henri, Paul Teodo, Byron de Marsé
For aspiring yoga teachers who want to develop their craft with integrity and authenticity.

Most YTT’s are becoming watered-down and mediocre, and we’ve created this podcast to help supplement Yoga Teachers who graduated from a YTT and don’t feel confident going out into the real world to teach.

Topics include real-talk about yoga in a practical world:
• Sequencing, teaching methodology, and the business of yoga;
• Anatomy, biomechanics, and safe practice;
• Philosophy, ethical and legal considerations;
• And much much more...

Co-hosted by Michael Henri, Paul Teodo and Byron de Marsé

We then get further into how your ego stops you from listening. And how it shows up around how we view and identify ourselves. Episode #66: Deconstructing the Ego (Part 2)
In this second episode on the ego, we dive into some of the more personal stories, experiences, and encounters we have had with our own egos. Byron shares about his first meaningful interaction around his ego. Which was in an acting class at a younger age. We also dial it back to a more basic level of ego-based thoughts, like comparing ourselves to other yoga teachers. Which Byron makes a bold claim about! Yoga teachers are of course not immune to dealing with their own egos, and you can see that from our own experiences and development too. We bring the episode to a close, by sharing some advice on shaking things up, making energy shifts, and learning to check your own ego. Episode #35: How to Avoid Burnout with Byron de Marsé
"I'm so burnt out. I've completed exhausted myself." Why is this conversation so common in the yoga community? How do we fill ourselves up? How can we sustain our work? If you're teaching 15 classes a week (which is a lot), then that's probably around 20 hours per week. Most full time jobs are 40 hours per week. So if you really think about it, are we just that lazy where 20 hours per week is too much work?  Or is the work exhausting?  And what is it ABOUT the work that is exhausting? Is there a way to shift or change things that so that it's not exhausting and the work can actually fill you up? - - - In this episode, Byron shares his wisdom around the topic of avoiding burnout as he experienced it during his 2nd year of working as a Yoga Teacher. There are many lessons to be learned from this episode regardless of your profession. When applied, these lessons can energize you and dramatically change your life. - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Episode #34: Healthy Masculinity & Femininity and Being Perfectly-Imperfect with Callan Mielnik
Giving ourself permission, forgiveness and grace is one of the hardest challenges we all face. It is an art. And it starts with giving ourselves permission first. Not always easy and often requires reminders, which is why made that the focus on this episode. This week's episode we invite Callan Mielnik, a Yoga teacher, Acro Yogi, Dance artist and overall sweetheart. Callan has strong beliefs about the power of giving ourselves permission as teachers, as well as encouraging that permission onto our students.  She was taught these lessons early on from her 200 hour YTT with the School of Sacred Arts (SOSA), and they've stuck with her as one of the most important lessons learned. While this topic seems simple on the front-end, the conversation goes deep into how it connects to: Balance between Masculinity and Feminiity Being Sloppy, Imperfect and learning How to make Mistakes What it means when we're feeling "broken" And so much more.. - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Episode #33 - Shoulder Anatomy Stabilization, Coordination and Injury Prevention with Michael Henri
Who HASN'T had issues with their shoulders? The thing that isn't common is what causes most issues in the shoulder.  While most of us are not "anatomists", you don't need to be in order to understand some of the basics. Knowing the basics can save your shoulders in the long run. Here are a few of the facts that Michael covers in this episode: Shoulder muscles are smaller than most muscles in the body, and therefore fatigue easily. (Like when holding Warrior I or II for a long period) Over 90% of shoulder injuries are muscle-related. Most shoulder problems occur because of a lack of warm-up in preparation for a demanding task (or pose). More importantly, through this audio-interactive episode, you'll learn: How your shoulder works; and how to effectively cue movements near the shoulder to achieve a safe alignment that will feel good in your body and your student's bodies. - - - In this episode, Michael breaks down the anatomy of the shoulder in a way that allows you to create a sense of awareness of what's happening when you move. Consider this a guided body-movement-episode. If that's even a thing. :-) - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Episode #32: Unrealistic Expectations put on Yoga Teachers with Paul Teodo
Yoga Teachers don't drink, swear, eat meat, or make mistakes.  Ha! That was hard enough to type let alone accept as truth. These are just a few of the unrealistic expectations that are put on Yoga Teachers. It's true that as Yoga Teachers, we have a responsibility to help heal the world and inspire health and wellness through the practice, but not in such a way that doesn't align with your wants, needs, or desires. There's also the idea that once you become a Yoga Teacher you 'should' automatically know how to fix people's injuries or limitations. That's a hard one to get over for a lot of new teachers, and I'm happy to say that I (Michael) break that one down to the point where you can sleep better at night knowing what your TRUE responsibilities are as a Yoga Teacher. - - - In this episode, Paul and Michael discuss the unrealistic expectations that the general population puts on Yoga Teachers. To be a certain way. To eat a certain way. To have a certain "energy" about them. While some of these traits may be true for some, they are not absolutes. This episode is all about deconstructing and debunking the many unrealistic expectations and turning them into after-thoughts. - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Episode #31: How to Avoid Knee Injuries in Yoga with Michael Henri
Our knees are under-appreciated in life. We typically don’t think too much about them until they become a problem. Depending on what your life has looked like, or what kind of activity you’ve gotten into throughout your life, you may have knees that are feeling older than you are! Or maybe that’s just me (Michael)! Either way, the knees are super important and require a lot of TLC to make sure they can continue to carry us around this beautiful world. When it comes to yoga practice, our knees can be easily ignored and overlooked, resulting in a gradual breakdown of stability and structure. Nobody wants that. With a little self-awareness and a sprinkle of anatomy knowledge, you can make a major impact in the progression of life for your knees and for those of the students that attend your classes. - - - In this episode, Michael breaks down the essential “need-to-knows” about protecting the knees during yoga practice and how we as teachers can help to facilitate that injury prevention through simple guidance of cues, reminders, and encouragement. Not only will it protect you and your students, but your students will sense the level of care and caution that you hold within your classes and they will respect you and want to continue to attend your classes. - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like!  If you listen on Apple Podcasts, give us a subscribe, rating, and review!  If you just listen to us, and you have a comment or question, send one of us DM. Episode #30: The Art of Responding Vs Reacting with Byron de Marsé
That choice on whether you're going to... respond... or react. In this week's episode, we welcome back Byron de Marsé as our guest to talk about so many interesting topics that it's hard to encapsulate them all in this description.... But I'll try (Just listen to the full episode, you won't be disappointed) The general theme of the episode is centered around the choice of reacting versus responding in situations within our day to day life. And how WE can make big difference in the happiness, or peace, we feel - And to those that warrant a reaction/response. Reacting usually means our emotions quickly decide our next move. For example, getting frustrated, annoyed, and upset when others do something that triggers you. However, responding means that I step back from those emotions and look at the whole picture for a "minute". Asking myself: "What are possible reasons for this to be happening?" "How can I do something differently to change the outcome?" That  "minute" allows time to realize that maybe "I need to be more clear in MY communication so that others know what my expectations are, so I don't get frustrated, annoyed and upset. Ahhh yes.... that seems like the wiser choice! Wisdom is a balance of emotional mind and logical mind. Acting from emotions is a "reaction"🤬 Acting from logic is robotic🤖 Acting from WISDOM is what sets us free.☮️ This is a flash of light on how this applies in life, and how this simple concept can be applied through various situations in your life to find a sense of peace in motion so that you can minimize the "suffering" you go through by not letting your mind wallow in mind poo (toxic emotions). - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Episode #27: The Power of Yoga from an Eastern Teacher with Paul Teodo
One of the most valuable ingredients that make a Yoga Teacher stand out from the rest is the level of genuine depth in their teaching style. It's one thing to lead a physical yoga practice, but it's another thing to inspire through words of wisdom. So, unless you've lived/studied in an Ashram for 10-15 years, then why not learn from someone who has. That is the typical life of an Eastern Yoga Teacher. To be completely immersed in the teachings of what "yoga" is. While in the Western world, yoga is mostly about exercise, when you can incorporate the wisdom from an Eastern Yoga Teacher, your professionalism and quality as a yoga teacher will sky rocket! - - - Listen to this 30-minute episode where Michael and Paul discuss the extreme life-changing benefits of learning from an Eastern Yoga Teacher. Particularly when it comes to teacher trainings, however, not limited to only trainings. Eastern teachers have a wealth of knowledge that is so deep, that could only have been developed over the span of 10 to 15 years. - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Episode #26: Drug Addict to Yogi Entrepreneur with Danni Pomplun
"Be it. Trust it." Arguably one of the most inspiring stories I've heard in a long time, Senior Yoga Teacher, Danny Pomplun, shares his journey where he went from drug addict to a well-respected yoga teacher. Growing up in East LA back in the day, and with a challenging child-hood, pushed Danni to leave home at the age of 16 years old and live on his own. Turning to drugs, sex work, and any means to help him survive, Danni has experienced life in a way that many of us have never seen, or imagined. Through a series of events, Danni was able to pull himself out of those toxic environments and grow into an inspiration for us all.  - - - Listen to this 45-minute episode where Paul interviews Danni on his life story that will inspire your day! Episode #25: Mastering the Art of Stretching, Flexibility, and Mobility with Michael Henri
Flexibility is a false sense of mobility. Who doesn't want to be more flexible, right? To be able to bend over, touch your toes; bend, and move without feeling stiffness, aches, and pains, to be able to move in ways that you could when you were younger. And isn't yoga FANTASTIC for stretching? (That's pretty much all it is right... ) Most people believe that yoga is stretching, and when you stretch you become more flexible. And that's the whole point, right? Not at all! And if you're a yoga teacher, it's very important that you understand the difference between stretching, flexibility, and mobility! - - - Listen to this 24-minute episode where Michael breaks down the difference between flexibility, mobility, and stretching and ultimately how to do all three in a safe and effective way! But more importantly, how to lead your classes in such a way as to support your students, and fully understand why, as yoga teachers, we cue certain movements or alignment points in particular poses. - - - If you liked this episode (or any others), and you haven't given us some love, then here's what you can do: If you listen on Spotify, give us a follow and like! Why are Yoga teachers expected to know everything about injuries?!? This is common in most professions that are considered in the health and wellness space. Particularly because yoga teachers are "Movement Therapists" and so, there is a myth that they should know everything about the body, and all the aches, pains, and injuries that come with it. Episode #12: Adam Carney – East+West Yoga School: A Fusion of Traditional India with the Modern World (Rat Race Revolution Podcast)
Adam Carney is an entrepreneur, a world traveler, yoga teacher,  and the founder of East+West Yoga. His yoga teacher school is already one of the largest in the world with massive success in creating yoga teacher trainings in Bali and online. At the core, East+West yoga teacher trainings bring together traditional Indian Easter yoga teachers and commercially successful Western yoga teachers to create a unique experience from Eastern and Western philosophies. Like many of us, Adam was feeling burnt out from the grind of start-up life. He wanted a change and needed to switch things up. With a desire to further his yoga practice, Adam decided to become a yoga instructor but wanted more out of a yoga teacher training than his local studio could offer so he decided to go all-in and head to the source of it all, India. This yoga teacher training changed everything for him. He saw the world through different eyes, in a different light. Although he returned to the start-up life and jumped back into the rat race, it wasn’t long before his deeper appreciation for life took the reins and he found himself stepping away from his start-up to follow his inner calling. He came up with the idea to mix the traditional Indian yoga teacher teachings with a modern flair that would allow the student to have an experience second to none. He carried over his business experience and expertise into the yoga world to create a high quality yoga teacher training like no other. In this episode, Adam and Paul discuss the elements of creating a great yoga teacher training and how 2020 has changed the landscape of the yoga community. Adam also shares personal insights on being a successful entrepreneur and running a conscious business. East+West Yoga Website Follow along on Instagram Brent Collier Michael Henri Paul Teodo

Kai Mata is a singer/songwriter raised between Indonesia and the USA with a heart of gold. She recently came out as Indonesia's first openly gay artist and has exploded in popularity. Being gay is a bold statement to make in a predominately Muslim and counservative country where marriage and procreation is a paramount part of society. Kai speaks with host, Paul Teodo, about the need for more awareness about LGBTQ+ rights in Asian countries, and the difficulties and responsibilities that come with authenticity in this captivating episode of The Rat Race Revolution Podcast. [Brent Collier] I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Kai personally for quite some time now and she is the real deal. She’s an incredible person with a good heart trying to make a real difference in the world the way she knows best - her music. She’s captivating, energizing, and an all around bundle of fun who fills my heart up everytime. Self-proclaimed as Indonesia’s first openly gay musician, Kai fliers the rainbow flag with pride. Indonesian is a very conservative country with society and laws that ostracize and discriminate against any and all non-heterosexual sexual orientations. She is a vocal activist for LGBTQ+ rights on and off stage. Kai Mata is an Indonesian Singer-Songwriter with a quirky-folk charm and vibrant lyricism that intertwine to cultivate connection. Listen to Kai Mata on Spotify here. With an emphasis on truthful storytelling, her shows are not solely performance, but also where audiences are invited into the world of sunlight to shadows. In 2019, she stepped into the role as a musical pioneer for the LGBTQ+ Community in Indonesia with her Pride Anthem, So Hard. Though her songs celebrating love have often sparked national controversy and backlash, they also have propelled her to be featured across the world on the South China Morning Post, Pink News, Mashable, and Diva Magazine, to name a few. Her most recent single, Where Love Goes, shows a progression as Kai Mata heralds love in an unmistakably memorable, captivating way, with fragrant hooks from an enchanting whistle, harmonic layers of vocals, and driving, rhythmic instrumentation to keep the listeners captivated.
