Good Morning, Cast Recording!

Good Morning, Cast Recording!

By Rebecca

If you ask a musical theatre enthusiast what first made them catch the bug, you're likely to get an array of answers. For many of us, however, our first window into the many wonders of musical theatre can be found in the vast oeuvre of cast albums available.

Think of this podcast as a book club of sorts... but instead of the latest bestseller, we'll be talking about the cast recordings that have shaped us, made us who we are, and brought us joy. Each episode I will be joined by a guest to discuss a recording of their choice and chat about all the reasons we fall in love with these albums.

Episode 4: Good Morning, The Last Five Years!

Episode 4: Good Morning, The Last Five Years!

Welcome to the Jamie Wellerstein Haters Club! Just kidding, it's another episode of Good Morning, Cast Recording! but for real, doesn't Jamie suck?

This time we're talking all about The Last Five Years with Thomas Gallogly. We deviate from the format a little to compare and contrast the original off-Broadway recording, the 2013 revival album, and the film soundtrack featuring Camp's own Anna Kendrick. Listen to Thomas talk a whole lot about Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan and hear the two of us duke it out over the superiority of soundtrack versus OCR. As a fun bonus, see if you can track my growing frustration with male privilege and the general terribleness of the patriarchy. It's a JRB party, and you're invited!

Episode 3: Good Morning, Personal Faves! (Part 2)

In the second part to the last mini-episode, I am joined by Stella the Cat. She provides many jingles and jangles as I discuss the most recent On the Town revival recording, the original Broadway cast album of Sondheim's Assassins, and the cast albums I've been enjoying over the past few weeks! Episode 2: Good Morning, Mean Girls!

Episode 2: Good Morning, Mean Girls!

For our very first full episode, I'm chatting with dramaturg, director, and fellow graduate student Anna Grace about 2018's Mean Girls. We'll get into our feelings about Aaron Samuels, thoughtful exploration of platonic relationships in musicals, the Tina Fey of it all, and a very special gay rant.

Episode 1: Good Morning, Personal Faves! (Part 1)

While I'm busy cooking up full episodes, please enjoy a little mini-episode about the cast albums that have impacted me over the last few years. In Part 1, we chat about the 2016 adaptation of Natalie Babbitt's Tuck Everlasting and break down all the reasons that I think we should be paying it more attention!
