Jacqui McCarty // Kenya & Palau (from Burman Ministry Centre of Burman University)

Hey!! I knew Jacqui was in Canada, but Canada is a whole country lol. I had no idea I would run into her the weekend I went up to visit Burman University. A few hours later and we had the opportunity to catch up and record the podcast in the brand new Burman Ministry Centre. Big shout out to Kevin and Scott for helping record the pod in the beautiful studio. Certainly inspiring as I continue to think of how to set mine up!

In this episode I talk with Jacqui McCarty, a fellow missionary to Palau - but also to other parts of the world. She shares some valuable reflection the impact of missions in her life, the perception of missions today, and a necessity to strongly consider where you are and what you're taking on when you look into becoming a missionary. An awesome and honest conversation for sure.

Ernest Hernandez @ Burman Ministry Centre on Burman University Campus

In this episode I have a chat with Ernest Hernandez, the director of the NAD's Office for Volunteer Missions. We get a chance to see what has inspired him in his pursuit and promotion of missions from the brand new Burman Ministry Centre on the campus of Burman University in Alberta, Canada.   We were here to participate in Burman's missions weekend, including several talks and break out sessions, and the official opening of the Centre as a launchpad for missions all across Canada. A pleasure to have the opportunity to record the first ever podcast with their beautiful setup, and we know it's just the beginning for them and their ministry! The best is yet to come!  ps. We didn't have all the audio figured out on this podcast, as we were all new to the process in this space. But thanks and a big shoutout to Kevin Kiers and Scott for helping out, and I'm so excited to see how things go for them in the future!

The 10-8-6 plan versus 3 sets of 10...a story of mentality

The 10-8-6 plan versus 3 sets of 10...a story of mentality

What's the real difference between going into a gym with a 10-8-6 mentality and going in with a "three sets of ten" mentality? In my opinion, it's a huge one. But this mentality is something that that we carry with us in all aspects of life, not just the gym.

2021 reflections and 2022 revelations: Final Night in Palau

2021 reflections and 2022 revelations: Final Night in Palau

My last night on this much too short Palau trip got me reflecting on life. 2021 was a wild year, and 2022 promises to continue the crazy. But we don't have to live in fear, whether we know what's coming or not. There's something more important to know, something that should give us the confidence moving forward whether we think we're the best, ready or neither.

The Keys to the Kingdom

The Keys to the Kingdom

I think we focus on the wrong thing when it comes to religion and trying to represent Jesus. What does it really mean to be right? what does it really mean to be a good person? Matthew 25 has an interesting story and some good lessons we can practically apply, and I believe that this story shows us what the real key to life is.

what's the real cost?

what's the real cost?

Virginia has been where I call home for years, and my parents finally moved out of the state. But home is comfortable, and a comfort zone, but comfortable comfort zones might not be what we need to grow and advance in life. The thing is, we don't want to leave them because of what we've invested in them, and we think it costs us too much to step outside of the comfort we've made. But what's the real cost?

Living Life Learning Lego Lessons

Living Life Learning Lego Lessons

I'm a huge LEGO fan. I've always enjoyed the idea that you can build something awesome and then turn around and be your own creative with it as well. Possibilities are endless! I even still have the earliest of all the lego sets I had growing up. But even as an adult, I still love to build them, and I've learned a few lessons from what LEGO does so well. Some of these lessons my mom got to experience first hand, and it was an awesome experience building her first set together. What can we learn from a simple (ok, maybe sometimes complicated too) toy? More than meets the eye, that's for sure!

Change Day Aftermath

Change Day Aftermath

This is the follow up to the Change Day episode. Do people realize what is awakened in them when they decide to serve, and why they enjoy doing something like service more than just sitting in classes all day? Is that spark something that can be activated into something more long term? How do we move the needle to help people realize what it is that they like about a day to serve - and that it's more than just missing a class or two?

September 16, 2021 was the fifth anniversary of Change Day at Andrews University. It's an event where classes are canceled, and students have the opportunity to help with a number of different projects in the community. It's always a great time for the students who show up and show out in service, but what makes it such an enjoyable experience? What changes in our minds when we engage in even just a day of service?

My Father's Legacy

My Father's Legacy

My parents got covid recently, and it shook me in a way I wasn't really ready for. 40%. However, I was able to learn a lot and grow from the experience, even in the midst of potential loss. I'm still processing it, but what I can say is that God is good, God is love, and God is in control, no matter your circumstances. We can find peace in all things by looking to God, our balance point.

So yeah, Portugal was great, fantastic all around.....but the airports got me. Usually I'm all about the airport culture and environment, but I couldn't wait to get out this time...

What's our perspective when things don't go our way? They won't all the time, so we should embrace it. Perhaps being more optimistic in those tough times could help us out in the moment, and prepare us to help others as they go through their own struggles too.

This is the final episode of a series that goes a step above, looking into the experiences and passions of the student missions coordinators of the Adventist universities all over America. We get to see what drives them to serve, and what has kept them in their fields for so long.

Rich Carlson, the SM Coordinator at Union College, joins the pod to share his vast experience and how missions has changed over the years. As the last coordinator I was able to get connected with, the wait was well worth it. Some extremely valuable insight for everyone in the world today and moving forward. What's it really all about? That's the question we have to ask ourselves.

*Disclaimer: The original intent was to interview all of the coordinators back to back, and then immediately publish their episodes. Instead, I severely underestimated the ability to get everyone free in the same ballpark, and it ended up taking several months to actually interview each of the 6 coordinators. As a result, the timelines don't sync up as per my original intention. However, this doesn't take away at all from the experiences and the impact that these awesome individuals have had, and will continue to have while leading their institutions in the inspiration of future missionaries and servants for Jesus. This is the first episode of a series that goes a step above, looking into the experiences and passions of the student missions coordinators of the Adventist universities all over America. We get to see what drives them to serve, and what has kept them in their fields for so long.

Fabio Maia, the SM coordinator at Pacific Union College, joins the pod to share what drives him, his early interest in missions and some of the things he's gotten to experience through his years in this position and before. He's doing a great job not only at PUC, but in various places all over the world.

Enjoy!

Jfiah Reeves joins me on the pod, talking about his experience with uncertainty and breaking free from the second comfort zone to realize the greatness and incredible things outside of it. He helps us to realize that we may not have actually entered a space of growth just because we have changed locations, but there's a mental shift that needs to take place for us to really get the most from our new experience.

In this episode I talk with Kim Ford, who had a very interesting experience as a missionary, with two separate adventures in the same location of Palau. She shares how missions isn't something so far away, but impacts in a very personal and close way, your life back here - if you allow it to. And in a time when people are looking all over for things including themselves, she gives a great suggestion to help you really find what you're looking for.

In this episode I speak with one of my best friends, a fellow 5-year missionary, who spent 4 years in Palau, a mystery, an enigma, and a guy who, if you know him you know him and if you don't you don't. A super low-key guy who has made an impact everywhere he goes for sure, but we get a slight look behind the curtain into what has inspired his mission experience and continued view on life and service now.

*His name is not mentioned and he's not shown in the video edition because....well, he's just like that. if you know you know. So, in the areas where the audio breaks, it's intentional lol. The video is cropped accordingly. Hope you enjoy!

In this episode I share a wild experience that happened to me in the mission field on Christmas Eve a couple years ago, and what I learned from it. Too often we think that acting good earns us good from God, but when we think that way, we're wrong. God's goodness towards us is not dependent on our "goodness", and that's a good thing!

Here's the story - in one of my classes we were tasked to do a group project for our final exam, and I didn't have a partner. I assumed that everyone else had a partner, but I also intended to do the project on my own for convenience sake. Turns out I wasn't alone. When asked in class who still needed a partner, I was the only one to speak up, but the person who initially requested the partner never got in contact with me. Instead, my friend Denard did.

Next thing you know, this idea was born, and here we are. Long story short, God paired us up for a reason, and we hope and pray that the message comes through in the episode here. We explore current day social issues and see if there's a way we can be better and do better as followers of Christ. We dive deep into some history, both personal and general, in our conversation, looking for lessons to help us improve today and avoid the pitfalls of the past. Finally, we offer some ideas and mental perspectives that we believe can help us make the difference. There is a relationship between the problems of racism in our world today and missions and service, and there's a lot more we can do about it than you may think.
