244: Trauma Dumping in Grad Admissions Essays

244: Trauma Dumping in Grad Admissions Essays

In this episode, I discuss the tricky topic of how to approach sharing deeply personal experiences, and even traumas, in graduate school application essays. I focus on the concept of “trauma dumping” and offer guidance on how to share impactful experiences without causing harm to oneself or others, emphasizing that trauma doesn’t need to be disclosed to write a compelling and powerful application essay.

Here's a link to an article I mentioned on the show on "Different Types of Trauma: Small 't' versus Large ‘T’."

235: What To Do When Asked to Write Your Own Grad School Recommendation

This episode is for grad school applicants who have been asked to write  your own letter of recommendation. This situation sometimes comes up when a student asks a professor for a recommendation letter and the professor may be too busy or prefers to save time by asking you to write the first draft for them. Strategies to write these letters include reaching out to mentors for strong letter templates, structuring the letter to include academic achievements, addressing weaknesses in the application, highlighting leadership experiences, discussing future goals, and highlighting meaningful personal experiences. While this may be an uncomfortable scenario to find yourself in, trust that it’s not uncommon and doesn’t necessarily mean the professor will submit a weak letter.

231: Why All Students Need a LinkedIn Account and an Online Presence for Career Success

231: Why All Students Need a LinkedIn Account and an Online Presence for Career Success

In this episode, I discuss the importance of having an online presence for professional success. I share advice for students on creating a LinkedIn account to help you with networking, finding alumni of grad programs you’re interested in, and finding relevant job opportunities. While you can network across many social media platforms, I’m especially fond of LinkedIn due to its search features that allows you to find people based on their work experience and education. The main takeaway is to remind you to keep expanding your network and community for more opportunities to come your way that will lead to your personal and professional success.

230: Eight Career Moves I'm Making to Flourish This Year

In this episode, I share the eight career moves I’m implementing this year for personal and professional growth and to flourish this year. These steps involve undertaking a coaching certification program, publishing more blog articles and podcast episodes, networking, becoming a part of speaker's bureau, continuing with therapy and a business coach, and setting strict boundaries. Amid the career advancements, I also stress the need for self-care practices, family time, and maintaining a work-life balance.

228: Managing Toxic Work Environments in Higher Education with Briana Muñoz Flores

228: Managing Toxic Work Environments in Higher Education with Briana Muñoz Flores

In today’s episode, Briana Muñoz Flores shares her insights on managing toxic work environments.

Briana is a 4th generation Latina born and raised in Central California. She has a bachelor’s in Ethnomusicology and Afro-American Studies from UCLA and a Masters in Higher Education from USC. She's worked in family businesses since she was young and spent most of her professional career working in universities. When not helping graduate students succeed, she likes to listen to audiobooks while walking her rescue dog, Niles, singing along to musicals and binge-watching K-dramas.

On the show, Briana identifies common signs of a toxic work environment, which include not trusting your intuition/gut feeling that something is wrong, things feeling unethical, and being used as a scapegoat. She also addresses the added challenges for Latinas and people of color in predominantly white work environments. And she dives into sharing strategies for managing toxic environments, including setting boundaries, having a support network, and creating an exit strategy.  Listen to this episode if you can relate or want to do your part to not create or replicate toxic work environments.

You can connect with Briana on LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianamf/) and via email at brianamay26@gmail.com

227: Why You Need a Better Workflow Instead of a New Tool

In this episode of the Grad School Femtoring podcast, I talk about the importance of having an effective workflow instead of a new tool for improved productivity.

I also share an example of my personal workflow which is a mix of using an online calendar and tasks management system in a way that honors my shifting energy levels.

I stress the importance of not overcomplicating tasks, finding a balance in calendaring and task management frameworks, and focusing on the underlying problem, not merely the symptoms.

221: Resources to Reflect On and Plan the Year Ahead

221: Resources to Reflect On and Plan the Year Ahead

In this episode on Grad School Femtoring podcast, I discuss methods for end-of-year reflection and planning for the new year. I share my tradition of selecting a “word of the year” that helps to guide my decisions. I also share the practice of creating a vision board while cautioning anyone who chooses to create one to set encouraging goals. And, I acknowledge that this time of year can be hard on many of us and it's okay to prioritize survival and rest, instead of planning or reflecting, if that's what feels right for you.

I also share the following additional resources: 1) the Year Compass, a free resource helping to reflect and plan the year with its various exercises, 2) my Growth Journal for personal writing and reflection, 3) my Life Assessment exercise to get a bird’s eye view of how well you are tending to different areas of your life, and 4) my episode (#146) on journaling questions to dream again.

220: Debunking Private Sector Myths And Creating Impact In Non Academic Roles with Sandra Torres

In this episode, we cover the topic of debunking private sector myths and creating impact in non-academic roles with Sandra Torres.

Sandra is a STEM career coach and entrepreneur. With over a decade of experience, she empowers PhD graduate students and postdocs to seamlessly transition from academia to the private sector, while honoring their values. Drawing from her own successful transition 12 years ago, Sandra offers unique insights into the challenges faced by academics. Sandra is committed to guiding STEM professionals towards fulfilling, value-driven careers.

On the show, Sandra addresses  misconceptions about the private sector, including beliefs that it is less flexible or fulfilling than academic work. She acknowledges the common challenges for academics entering the private sector include imposter syndrome, not knowing how to articulate transferable skills, struggling with corporate culture transitions, and feeling like a “sellout.” She also encourages listeners to  carefully consider what success, fulfillment, and impact means for them personally instead of just following a predetermined path. Tune in to this episode to hear all her tips for academics seeking to make the transition to industry!

215: Is Grad School For You: Questions to Consider Before Applying

This week I'm sharing some key questions you should ask yourself when considering applying to graduate school. These questions cover your motivations, career goals, and level of self-awareness. I'm also excited to announce my new book "Is Grad School For Me?" is available for pre-order. Only those who preorder the book get instant access to a supplementary workbook with resources that include a quiz with similar questions. I co-authored this book with Dr. Miroslava Chavez-Garcia to provide the guidance I wished I had as an undergraduate. 208: You Are Being Sold a Lie: How to Plan for a Career Outside Academia (Replay)

In this episode, Dra. Yvette discusses the topic of the adjunctification of academia as well as how and why it’s important to plan for a career outside of the tenure-track. Believe it or not, you likely have had a professor who earns wages that are below the poverty line, relies on public assistance, and/or  struggles to meet their basic needs. If you are being trained to become a tenure-track professor, the grim reality is that there’s a good chance you won’t land a t-t job, not because you’re not competitive or qualified, but rather because there just aren’t enough jobs. Tune in to this episode to learn a few ways to keep your career options open as you navigate grad school.

206: Harsh Financial Realities of Early Entrepreneurship

In this solo episode, I talk about the harsh financial realities of early entrepreneurship and share my own experience. I was prompted to share about this due to informational interviews I've been invited on and many instances where I realized that a lot of people have no clue what goes on behind closed doors within a single-member business and their finances. I stress the importance of transparency in sharing the financial aspects of entrepreneurship, especially for those in higher ed who are considering this career option. I explain how many entrepreneurs spend countless unpaid hours on various tasks and face expenses that traditional W-2 employees would not have, like taxes and overhead. I end the episode with call to support the entrepreneurs in your life, whether financially or through referrals and sharing.

198: Three Ways to Start Active Reading in Grad School

In this episode of the Grad School Femtoring Podcast, I cover the topic of active reading strategies in graduate school. I specifically share three ways to start active reading today. They are: reading out of order and instead in a strategic order, developing a list of reading questions to pull critical information you need from your texts, and to identify your learning style to understand how you read and retain information best.  This episode is brought to you by the Grad School Femtoring Academy, my six week personal development and sustainable productivity program for first-gen BIPOCs. Shout out to my founding femtees to recommended this episode topic! If you want to join my waitlist for the next cohort of GSF Academy femtees, go here.
