Episode 220 Alison Preuss- A home educator's incredible fasting journey .Ageing backwards at 67 living her best life .

BIO: ALISON PREUSS (pronounced PROYCE)

I am a 67-year-old mother of three and grandmother of one, widowed for 10 years. I live in Angus, northeast Scotland. I have owned and run an online vintage boutique since 2007 and was previously a Scottish parliamentary researcher and freelance journalist. My own children were home-educated, and I co-ordinate the national Scottish Home Education Forum which offers information, support and advocacy to parents and campaigns on education issues. My attempts at retirement have proved futile as I enjoy what I do and like to keep busy and active both mentally and physically. I was a skinny child and did classical ballet until my mid-teens, so I never had any cause to diet, and my weight remained static for years. After my first two pregnancies in the 80s, I zapped back to normal within weeks, but my third baby was quite a bruiser and it took me a few months of good diet (not dieting!) and exercise to get back in shape. During my husband's illness and after he died in 2013, I practically stopped eating due to stress and trauma. I dropped so much weight I looked emaciated, but once I got back into regular eating, middle-age creep started to become evident!

I came to IF through my son, who takes his health very seriously and is an avid researcher. My first shot at it was in 2018/2019 when I did a 5-month stint with good results, but I made the mistake of looking at it as a short-term undertaking rather than a lifestyle change. When Covid and the first lockdown came along, like many, I got sloppy with my diet and drank too much. The catalyst for change was my daughter's wedding in November 2021, for which I had around 10 months' notice to fit into the vintage dress I wanted to wear (and it would be a challenge!) I took it very seriously and began on 11 January 2021 doing 19:5, which had worked well previously, and completely cutting out alcohol. Meanwhile, I joined a few IF groups online and devoured IF podcasts, taking inspiration from others' experiences. Two months in, I had started regular dance sessions, and four months in, I was in the gym three times a week and doing occasional Meal-less Mondays /36-hour fasts.  I didn't regularly weigh myself but took many photographs and weekly measurements. I was losing inches steadily and gaining muscle due to strength training, and people were noticing. Two months before my daughter's wedding, I had reached my goal of fitting into that vintage dress and continued downward until around February 2022, when I estimated I had lost around 45lbs. Now, three years into IF, it's just a usual way of life, and I can't see myself ever going back.

In terms of unexpected NSVs, a longstanding scar from a burn on my leg completely disappeared and an injury to my finger that I'd trapped in a drawer miraculously got better. My skin has improved, and my hair is now waist-length, silver and in great condition, despite being a woman of a certain age. I managed to get back into my front splits at 66 with consistent flexibility training, although my hamstrings do complain a bit! I also fit into some of the clothes I wore in my 20s, including a vintage evening dress to meet the queen in 1981. It's been like a post-pandemic renewal!

Update to those notes

Almost 49-year-old wife and mother of three (22, 20, 17). Former ICU nurse turned stay-at-home mom.

I am from Minnesota, USA. I began fasting on February 1, 2021, losing 50 pounds over ten months. I maintained that weight range for about a year and then started to see a very slow regain.

I had a hysterectomy in late October 2023, and since then, saw my weight climb very quickly. I'm currently 18 pounds higher than when I first started maintaining.

Episode 218 -Shoshana Grinstein An incredible intermittent fasting story finding liberation and great health living and IF lifestyke

Episode 218 -Shoshana Grinstein An incredible intermittent fasting story finding liberation and great health living and IF lifestyke

By Shoshana Grinstein

Height—150cm 5ft—Weight at start 88 kilos *size 46. Current weight around 70 kilos *size 36!! Growing up in Montreal, Canada- very active, healthy childhood. Age 11/12- first encounter with weight on the scale, dietitian. Instead of becoming more confident, it made me more self-conscious. I was hard on myself and judgemental. Periods of over-eating Periods of under-eating Un-healthy relationship with my body and food Moved to Israel, gained weight- lost weight- got married- pregnancies. Heavier and heavier between each pregnancy- about 20 kilos overweight Depression- finally leading to real healing Therapy: learning to accept myself, to be kind to myself. Pregnancy #4- healing but corona !! stuck at home. Crazy. Weight Gain and inactivity. While pregnant, parenting coach. So during covid, began listening to podcasts about Parenting. Became vegan and listened to Podcasts about healthy eating, which led to podcasts about mental health. I began to treat myself better, talk to me more kindly, try to motivate me positively, and just get happier. As much as I was learning to love myself the way I was, I couldn't ignore how big I had gotten; a few things triggered my fasting start. My son had said to me: Mom, I’ve never seen you run! A picture from the summer. And ads constantly popping up on my instagram about it! I finally said- what the hell, let’s try. I have nothing to lose… except the weight. I challenged myself; it was 9:00 pm- I could not eat until recess at 10:00. I did it! Stopped eating at 8 pm and went the next day to 10:00… then noon… then I wouldn’t eat until I got home from work. OMAD…. Pilates in July (6 months in), and here we are! Within a week, I realized I needed to know more- started listening to Gin Stephens, and bought and read her book. I looked for more interesting podcasts and found The Fasting Highway- bought and read The Fasting Highway! It is so motivating and such an exciting community to be a part of. The initial weight came off fast! I was down 10 kilos in no time. I felt such a new sense of freedom- so in control. I learned to listen to my body and stopped fearing that I might miss out or feel hungry…. “Vigilance without obsession!” Measured but stopped weighing- keep getting rid of clothes- old and new! (Dropped my false sense of confidence and swapped it out for a new one.) Having been raised in a home where no one saw me for who I was/am- no one motivated me or believed in me and now… I’m in a place in my life where I feel such control; I feel worthy, and I feel that I can do and succeed at whatever I want. I want more for myself and my family, and I know now that I can accomplish anything. To get to this point in my life after years of struggling is so liberating

Episode 216 Tracey Vignovich An experienced faster shares her 60 ponds 28 Kg weight loss journey.

Episode 216 Tracey Vignovich An experienced faster shares her 60 ponds 28 Kg weight loss journey.

Tracey is 54 years old and lives in Iowa.  She is married to her high school sweetheart and the love of her life. They have 3 grown daughters and 3 granddaughters. Family is a huge part of her “why” for finally deciding in 2022 that it was time to focus on her physical health and prioritise her well-being. In her school days, Tracey was fit and athletic. Her daily activities covered the poor eating habits she developed in her teen years. Once college came, the activity decreased, and poor food choices continued; 30 years of yo-yo dieting followed. Tracey was always looking for a quick fix and focused solely on the scale and her appearance. She now reflects and understands the abuse she put her body through for years. Tipping the scales in late 2019 at almost 200 pounds on her 5’4” frame, fatigue, joint pain and pre-diabetes were taking its toll. Tracey and her husband were empty nesters and new grandparents, and she began to realize her lifestyle would keep her from enjoying the best years of her life ahead of them. Her mindset was shifting, and a journey was underway. She had no idea how much healthier and happier her future was about to become.  When she reached out to her physician one more time for help, she was told if she couldn’t go more than a couple hours before getting “hangry”, she shouldn’t consider intermittent fasting and maybe try the Mediterranean diet.  That conversation planted a seed for intermittent fasting because, after all, if Tracey is told she can’t do something, she tends to think to the contrary.  Over the next couple of years, she discovered Gin Stephens and Dr. Fung, read their books and then tucked them away until August 2022, when her mindset was fully on board for finally making a lifestyle change.  She got the books out again and began her true IF journey.  Along the way she discovered podcasts and Facebook groups, which led her to The Fasting Highway.  To date, Tracey has lost almost 60 pounds, gained numerous NSV’s and turned her health around!  She lives an active life with her husband of 32 years and can now keep up with her family!  She practiced dental hygiene for 15 years and in 2020, made a career change to the business side of dental where she became a practice manager at a dental office.  She enjoys long walks, landscaping, listening to podcasts and spending as much time with her family. Tracey considers herself one blessed lady!

Episode 215-Helen Blicharz -An evolving intermittent fasting journey with a few bumps in the road losing over 110 pounds 50 Kg.

My name is Helen Blicharz. I am a 50-year-old mother of three. I also have a wonderful husband, John, and the cutest little Beagle named Bingo. I work for a Lutheran Church, and I have a member, Shelley Beck, who introduced me to your podcast. She also encourages me to share my story with you and has been doing so for over a year; I've been hesitating as I am still on my weight loss journey. I have been pretty much overweight most of my life or at least after I graduated college. I tried just about every diet out there Weight Watchers, Liquid diets. Nutrisystem's Jenny Craig, you name it. Various things worked throughout the years, but nothing never worked or help me loose weight. In 2018, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my doctor told me that most people were not successful in losing weight on their own and that I had really good insurance, and she recommended weight loss surgery. I was really offended, but I found out later that she was in her residency and was using a reverse psychology tactic, which worked for me. I told her that I have never truly tried to lose weight on my own, and I think I could do it with some guidance. So I started out giving up sugar for 21 days, and that led me to a low-carb diet. Which eventually led to keto. And I lost 25 lbs. When I went back to the doctor, she was very happy, and that started my journey to where I am today. I did not stay with Keto, but I was introduced to intermittent fasting. COVID and why everyone else gained weight I was losing because I had more control and I didn't have insulin spikes. The keto diet helped me too. Gain the confidence I needed to find another lifestyle which was intermittent fasting. Three years later I still Fast, Feast & Repeat. Mostly. I have a four-hour window, so I fast for 20 hours, and sometimes, on the weekend, I open my window up for 8 hours to switch it up. I have lost 110 lbs. total so far, and although I am currently not at my goal weight and still have 50 lbs. to go, I know I will get there.

Episode 214 Julie Mansfield A long term intermittent faster shares how she made intermittent fasting a sustainable lifestyle finding great health

Episode 214 Julie Mansfield A long term intermittent faster shares how she made intermittent fasting a sustainable lifestyle finding great health

Jules is a 53 years old woman, married, with three beautiful children and living the dream in Western Australia (WA). Her passions, besides her vocation are, yoga, bush walking, going to the beach and reading. Jules is a family therapist for a not-for-profit women’s health organisation and dearly loves her work. Previously, she was a registered nurse; she trained and then worked in Victoria and the UK. She lived there for 15 years, and she met her lovely Englishmen. Jules had two of her children in the UK, and they all moved to her hometown in Victoria, where she had her third child in 2007. Then, they moved from Victoria to WA in 2010 due to hubby's work commitments.

During Jules’s third pregnancy, in 2006, she developed gestational diabetes, which sparked off an intentional health journey. Having gestational diabetes meant she had to test fasting blood sugar levels all the time, just like a type 1 diabetic. And, since 2007 has needed to have fasting BSL’s annually and Fasting Glucose Tolerance Test every three years. Also, Jules’s grandmother had type 2 diabetes and unfortunately had to have one of her toes amputated and was on daily oral medication. So, with these two factors in Jule’s medical and family history, Jules was determined to avoid acquiring type 2 diabetes. Disappointingly, Jules was quite discouraged by GP’s saying each year, when she would go in to see them for the blood work results, that she would inevitably get it and there was nothing to be done to prevent it. Then, with a few changes in Jules’s health, well-being and significant life events, Jule’s blood results started to deteriorate, and she feared the worst. Then, thankfully, in 2018, Julie discovered a tool called Intermittent fasting; at the time, when she was going down the rabbit hole of YouTube lectures about sugar and insulin from Dr Robet Lustig at the University of California and then later came across the book The Diabetes Code, by Dr Jason Fung. This book, The Diabetes Code, changed her life forever, and not to mention saved her life.

Before starting IF, Jules BSL’s were 6.8 mmol and rising, and now, after six years of IF, they average around 4.8 mmol. Jules has had to tweak her IF regime, flipping back and forth from OMAD to ADF over the six years when optimal blood results have begun to waiver. Jules's primary focus is balancing her hormones, even though she weighs daily. For those that like numbers, Jules is 175 cm tall and before IF weighed 86kg and now maintains between 76-78kg. Has gone from a dress size of 16 to 12.

Episode 212 Erika Barnhart -Finding freedom through fasting losing an incredible 39 Kg (87 pounds) in ten months.

Episode 212 Erika Barnhart -Finding freedom through fasting losing an incredible 39 Kg (87 pounds) in ten months.

Erika Barnhart is a 43-year-old salon consultant who resides in Pennsylvania with her husband and three dogs. She had been struggling with weight issues since childhood and was overweight throughout most of her life. Over many years she has tried numerous diets since the age of 12, but her success was only temporary. Erika has always been fond of eating various foods, but she also enjoys eating in large quantities and feeling full. At the age of 13, she was diagnosed with high cholesterol and triglycerides but was never prescribed any medication. Then in early 2023, she realized that she was procrastinating on scheduling her annual physical because she knew that the doctor would become more persistent about beginning a series of statin medication due to her high cholesterol. She also suffered from sleep apnea, used a CPAP machine, and had been experiencing plantar fasciitis in her right foot, causing her to limp. She felt unnaturally old, defeated, and unhealthy for her age. She was ready to make a change. She began looking for a sustainable and cost-effective plan to become healthier. As well as not wanting to take any medications unless necessary.

Erika’s work involves a hybrid environment, including working from home, local, and overnight travel. She attends many business luncheons and events, so finding something to fit into her ever-changing routine is essential.

In March 2023, Erika finally discovered the freedom she had been seeking through fasting, and within about ten months, she lost 87 pounds (39.5kg). Erika achieved this by practising various fasts and focusing on nourishing foods. She appreciates the flexibility of fasting and incorporates it into her routine frequently. She has tried several fasts, such as Intermittent Fasting, Alternate Day Fasting (ADF), and Modified Alternate. Day Fasting (MADF), and One Meal a Day (OMAD). Also, she occasionally includes 48-60-hour fasts. Fasting has helped Erika gain more clarity, perspective, and patience, and the best part is that fasting doesn't cost anything! The flexibility has also made it easy to work into her ever-changing schedule. She's also excited to incorporate some yoga and weight training as soon as she begins working towards achieving her goal body. She’s also looking forward to hiking with her dogs once the weather improves in the spring.

Episode 211 Gretchen Bates A former athlete transforms her life living an intermittent fasting lifestyle

Episode 211 Gretchen Bates A former athlete transforms her life living an intermittent fasting lifestyle

Growing up in rural Tennessee, Gretchen Bates was always very active. She spent long summer days in her childhood exploring the woods, swimming in creeks, and playing with friends.  As a teenager and young adult, Gretchen was competitive in sports and was an avid cyclist, kayaker, open-water swimmer and triathlete. By her early 30s, she had completed her first full-length Ironman competition, logged over 15,000 miles on her bike, and finished three separate, fully independent bicycle tours.  At 5’6” tall (167 CM) and 160 pounds (73 kg), she was a healthy, athletically built woman. By her late 30s, Gretchen left her physically active career to return to school for her Masters Degree.  She started a new career after graduation, leading to long hours behind a desk. The new stationary career and her naturally slowing metabolism started to take its toll.  By her 40th birthday, Gretchen weighed 185 pounds (84 kg). To control her weight, she spent several years experimenting with low-calorie and fad diets. Nothing seemed to work.

At 44 years old, Gretchen’s weight ballooned again when her mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. Gretchen became her primary caregiver, took on the management of her mother’s small business, and was responsible for her mother’s personal and health affairs, all while juggling her career. The weight of being a full-time caregiver left Gretchen physically and emotionally exhausted.  Like many caregivers, she was chronically stressed and started suffering from depression. Simultaneously, the Covid pandemic swept through North America, her mother’s condition worsened, and by 46 years old, Gretchen had reached her all-time highest weight of 220 pounds (100 kg).  A sudden health scare forced Gretchen to take a hard look at her lifestyle and to make drastic changes to reclaim her health. After 15 months of Intermittent Fasting, Gretchen reached her goal weight range of 140-150 pounds (63-68 kg). She continues to try new fasting protocols and works to strengthen her fasting muscles by practising TRE, mindful eating, and avoiding sugar and processed foods. She fully embraces her new fasting lifestyle and strives for optimal health.

Episode 210 Joe Bernardo -A registered nurse living an intermittent lifestyle that has changed his life.

Episode 210 Joe Bernardo -A registered nurse living an intermittent lifestyle that has changed his life.

By Joe Bernardo RN.

My wife and I are Registered Nurses by profession.  Despite knowing how to “eat healthy” and what the guidelines recommend, I found myself to be in the worst health and shape about a year and three months ago.  I was 42 years old, and my BMI breached 30; I had RA, sciatic issues, and undiagnosed sleep apnea. I was also getting short of breath with minimal activity.  I also found out, later in my journey, that I had been pre-diabetic and possibly diabetic.  This did not surprise me as I was addicted to sodas, often drinking 6-8 glasses with dinner!  Unfortunately, I did not have any baseline labs drawn before fasting and keto, and I was already 5-6 months into it when I had my A1C completed.

Fasting has changed our lives as all of my chronic and acute issues are now gone!  I live out a baseline 18:6 protocol with extended water fasts of 36 hours and beyond bi weekly!

Episode 207 Susanne Muller -An experienced intermittent fasters journey and what she discovered along the way.

Episode 207 Susanne Muller -An experienced intermittent fasters journey and what she discovered along the way.

Susanne struggled with her weight for most of her adult life, losing and re-gaining the same 30-odd lbs over and over and over. She tried several diets, including Weight Watchers, calorie counting, and keto. Although she lost weight with all the diets, none of them were sustainable, and the calorie counting, macro tracking, and food restrictions made her miserable. In 2019, she tried intermittent fasting and lost 38 lbs (17kg). Her weight before IF generally ranged from about 220 lbs (100kg) to 180 lbs (81kg). At 5’9” tall (1.75m) this had put her in the overweight to obese range for many years. After a slight adjustment in her maintenance routine, she has successfully kept the weight off and has settled in at 160-165 lbs (72-75kg), a weight she had not seen since her late 20s. Although she started fasting for the weight loss, she has kept doing it for the many health improvements that fasting brought to her life. These included:

·       a reduction in blood pressure and resting heart rate,

·       the elimination of plantar fasciitis, which she had since her 20s,

·       the elimination of dry eyes, which she had since her 30s,

·       the elimination of keratosis pilaris (red bumps on skin) which she had since her teens,

·       significant reduction in joint pain and foot calluses.

On most days, Susanne sticks to one meal a day (dinner) and generally eats between 5 and 9 pm. She is thrilled to have ditched the counting and tracking!

Susanne is a retired scientist and medical writer. She and her husband spent nearly two years as nomads in the US and then New Zealand before moving to New Zealand in 2022. She’s a big fan of travelling, languages, pilates, hiking, gardening, cooking, wine, and dogs.

Episode 205 -Chrissy Carter -The First twelve months living an Intermittent Fasting Losing an amazing 35 Kg (75 Pounds)

Episode 205 -Chrissy Carter -The First twelve months living an Intermittent Fasting Losing an amazing 35 Kg (75 Pounds)

By Chrissy Carter I have struggled with my weight since I was a teenager; after school, when I started working, I started dieting. I lost weight and got pregnant with my first; I only put on 2kgs my whole pregnancy, and I was lighter after I had her. I spent my 20s either pregnant or breastfeeding. After four children, I thought I was done, so I returned to the gym and lost weight, eating six small meals daily. I then stopped working at the gym, stopped working out, and then got pregnant again. After I had my last daughter, I struggled again to lose the weight I would lose then gain. Doing all the things I knew. Then, my marriage ended abruptly, and my weight piled on. When I met my now husband, I was at my heaviest, 120kgs, despite my age and weight being against me. At 44, I became pregnant with our son. I lost 10kgs when I was pregnant with him. Towards the end of 2019, I started Keto and, over six months, lost 30kgs. Then, due to lots of stress and not having time to look after me, I put it all back on. Three months before my 50th birthday I decided to start fasting again, I eat whole foods in my eating window. I wanted to lose 10kgs before my birthday, but I lost 20. Over the next six months, I lost another 15 kgs and have kept that off within 3kg on either side. I have lowered my BP and dropped from a size 20 to a size 12. I am blessed to walk along the beach at least 12km daily, sometimes double that. I am so grateful to Graeme Currie and the Fasting Highway family, who keep me on track.

Episode 204 Kathryn Sternfels- The first six months living an intermittent fasting lifestyle. Using vision boards to set goals.

Episode 204 Kathryn Sternfels- The first six months living an intermittent fasting lifestyle. Using vision boards to set goals.

Bio By Kathryn Sternfels

I am 65 yrs. old.  5’1”.  HW ever 250lbs.  SW 221 lbs. CW 196 lbs.  Loss of 25 lbs. since July 2023.  I cut my insulin level from a 15 to an 8 in 3 months.  On Dec. 13th, I’m having labs drawn, and I look forward to seeing the results and comparing them with last time. Cholesterol panel especially, as well as A1C.

I am a retired registered nurse, and I was raised in the Northeast USA, in New England, in the State of Rhode Island. I am 5 years old. My dog Buddy and I moved to the coastal area of South Carolina.

My weight started going up following my divorce, which was in 1991. I did not see that coming, and with two very young daughters, it completely shattered my hopes & dreams.  I was suddenly in a life I didn’t recognize and never thought I’d be in.  I admit I didn’t handle it well.  Eventually, I settled into the 230-235 lbs. and stayed there for decades.  I used food to take my emotional pain and to shield myself from the world.

In 2019, I attended the wedding of my cousin Lisa’s daughter.  We don’t get to see each other much in person, and I couldn’t believe how GREAT Lisa looked. Of course, I asked, and she said “intermittent fasting,” to which I was inertly horrified at hearing this and thought “, Oh! No way in hell would I even CONSIDER such a thing like that?  Who would DO that???”.  I felt that because I realised that I had always thought I knew what I was doing all my life.  Ha!  THAT joke was on me.

During the following three years or so, I “dabbled” in IF.  I read/internet searched/you, tubed/podcasted Jason Fung, Gin Stephens, you and anyone else whose name I heard mentioned by these people.  Anything and everything I get my hands on to learn about IF and all the other health-related rabbit holes leads one down.

I’ve taken part in the Zoe study, which was enlightening, and now I am entering my 2nd month of a 3-month subscription to Nutri and & am utilizing a CGM for the data. I am not diabetic.

Episode 203 Lisa Evers -A journey of mind body and self-awareness. It is not all about weight loss finding peace living an intermittent Fasting Lifestyle

Bio By Lisa Evers
I don’t even know where to begin, But all my life, I have had
digestive issues, so I have always been aware of what I was eating to notice how I felt. When I was young, it was IBS-d, then moved to constipation. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in my early 20s. After that diagnosis, I was worried that weight gain was going to be a side effect, so I started to do things
to make sure that didn’t happen. I felt like I was becoming obsessed with staying the way I was. I have never had a weight issue, and I almost became “obsessed” with making sure I didn’t get one! I did all the things not to gain weight and stay fit while trying to monitor my digestive issues. I was on some
of the “plan” all the time, which led to a diet brain even though I had no weight to lose. This went on for almost 30 years; I found IF, and the rest of my story is about freedom! All my obsessions are starting to fade, and my mind is clear to think of the things that are important to me.

Episode 201-Michelle Foster, A writer's journey with Intermittent fasting and the difference the clean fast made.

Michelle Foster is a writer and researcher who lives in Illinois with her husband and three teenagers. She has struggled with her weight since about age 12, and has had many highs and fewer lows, but always concerned about her weight. Obesity runs in her family, and she tried many things over the years for weight control, including tracking calories, running, Weight Watchers and various types of fasting. She had success losing 40+ pounds more than once, but over time the weight always crept back on and she felt worse than before. In 2022, she decided to try “clean” fasting after hearing about it for a couple of years. She was pretty skeptical it would be any different than any other fasting style, but she was wrong! She has lost more than 50 pounds even while going on vacations, holidays and other life stressors, and has now been maintaining her loss for more than 3 months. She has no plan to go back to a “regular” style of eating! Michelle loves hiking and outdoor activities such as kayaking and cross-country skiing. It's easier to move and play with less weight, and she's looking forward to years of activity, able to maintain her weight loss with fasting.

Episode 199 Laurie Lewis -We talk long term intermittent fasting and troubleshoot some issues long term fasters face.

For Intermittent Fasting Coach and Author Laurie Lewis, menopause dealt a crushing blow: brain fog, lack of balance, memory loss, and the sudden gain of 50 pounds. She tried everything she knew to feel better, and the methods that worked in the past made no difference. After struggling for many years, Laurie stumbled upon Intermittent Fasting and started having an Eating Window that same day. The menopausal fog lifted in less than one week. She had more energy and felt more “like herself.” She lost 51 pounds in 15 months and has kept it off for over five years. Now, at 60 years old, Laurie has kept an Eating Window every day for 6.5 years. Through her business, Fast Forward Wellness, she is changing lives through her group classes & 1:1 personal coaching and is recognized globally as a go-to Intermittent Fasting expert.  Laurie and I take a look at long term intermittent fasting and challenges that brings.

Episode 196 -Neil and Suzi Shultz -A couple who fast together that found success together living an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

Episode 196 -Neil and Suzi Shultz -A couple who fast together that found success together living an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

Hello, I am Neil Shultz, 58 years old. I never really had much to be concerned about regarding my weight until, while serving in the National Guard, I realised that my uniform is no longer fit.  This was around the year 2000. I went to my supply Sergeant's office to order a bigger uniform. My first introduction to IF was my wife doing a form of it and explaining it all to me. I wrote it off as just another diet. It wasn't until November 2020 that my sister sent me a message and said you gotta listen to this, she said she was hooked on it. A 20-minute interview with Dr Jason Fung on YouTube was the beginning of my life change.. From there, I read all i could on intermittent fasting.

I would say the beginning of fasting for me was rather reckless, I would do OMAD, a three-day fast, OMAD for a few days, a five-day fast, OMAD for a few days, a three-day fast, OMAD and on and on for quite some time until several months later I found that OMAD and clean fasting is the way to go. I now maintain my weight from an all-time high of between 210 to 220 pounds. Currently, I am maintaining 140 with up to a 5-pound variance.

I gave up all sugar after listening to the Netta Gorman Podcast. for a considerable amount of time. Currently, my sugar intake is limited to a few times a month.

My name is Susi Shultz; I am 55 years old, and I have always struggled with my weight, always knowing that I was different from my sister and cousin, who were both thin in elementary and high school. While in high school in the mid-80s I went on a “diet” which unknown to me was really intermittent fasting, I would eat only one meal a day.  My family and friends thought I was starving myself, but it worked!  I even joined the field hockey team!  After starting to eat 3 meals a day again I regained the weight.  I also hid food; in elementary and high school my family didn’t buy snacks or sugary cereals, but I would create my own sugary snacks.  I secretly would mix peanut butter and brown sugar and eat it.  I also would pour sugar on my cereal in the mornings.  Then , after having my son at age 21, I ballooned up bigger than ever and stayed that way until my son was 11 or 12.  I thought “This is it” and went on another “diet”. I then lost 100 pounds just by eating one hot dog and one potato a day, not realizing that what I was doing was intermittent fasting.  I thought I was “calorie counting”.  Again, the weight returned after going back to “regular” eating.  Then, in 2013, I had gastric sleeve surgery in which I lost 85 lbs., not realizing this was a form of fasting- at least for me.  After three years, the weight started returning; it was very disappointing and embarrassing because I was so proud of losing all the weight to see it creep back on.  Then, In 2021, my husband and I learned about intermittent fasting, and we jumped headfirst into the lifestyle with hope and enthusiasm.  There was something that promised so much for so little!  Learning about insulin, spikes, and how they affect weight gain more than calories was/is a game-changer for us!  It makes sense now how I lost weight those other times and ultimately gained back because I went back to “normal” eating.  Also, a couple of years after my sleeve surgery, I started drinking a lot of red wine; in 2019, my husband and I read “This Naked Mind” by Annie Grace.  After reading this book, we never had another drink.  Also, thanks to the urging of Graeme Currie, with whom I booked a one-on-one coaching session, I now drink my coffee black; I never thought that would even be possible.  Because Graeme explained the importance of “clean fasting”, he made me realize how even something like cream could break a fast.  Now, I can’t even drink coffee with cream in my window; it makes me feel too full.  I am forever grateful to Graeme Currie and the fasting community for the support and help in maintaining a 75 lb. weight loss.

Episode 195 Jane Morton- One year of intermittent fasting losing an incredible 85 pounds (39 KG) Applying research to the experiment of one.

Jane is a 61-year-old mother of two grown-up daughters from the UK. She has struggled with maintaining weight loss after trying almost every known weight loss route throughout her adult life. She was a Registered Nurse for over 40 years and, after reflecting during the Covid pandemic, decided to take retirement at 59 and move to Yorkshire to be nearer to her daughters. She had been interested in gut health (the microbiome)for some years and followed Zoe on social media for information. In October 2022, she joined the Zoe Big IF study and found how wonderful fasting could be. She found The Fasting Highway Facebook group through the Podcast and joined the Patreon community, which she has found exceptionally inspiring and supportive. Alongside fasting, she tested with Zoe, changing her eating habits to incorporate foods matching her needs. A year later, she has lost 85lbs (39kg or just over 6st) and gained vitality and a new zest for life.

Episode 193 Jude Gregory- Celebrating one year of living an intermittent fasting lifestyle and finding success after some bumps in the road.

Jude’s Bio.

Jude grew up being active – played netball, basketball, and swimming carnivals. Always had the eat what was on your plate mentality, but weight never used to be a focus for her until her early 40s, and then it was the mentality of eating less and moving more to try and lose weight. The weight slowly started to pile on, and the usual strategies were not working. And she had resolved that this was just what happens as you get older. She didn’t feel good about herself, and her clothes were not fitting; her body was aching, and she started not to want to go out. After hearing about IF in October 2022, listening to audiobooks, and getting some information, she decided to try it as a last resort. After a few months, she lost several kgs, and her body wasn’t aching as much. Her initial focus was just to lose weight, but as time went on, she noticed other areas that improved, such as more energy and mental clarity, but also how much changes in mindset and how she viewed things made a difference. In February 2023, after having a 1:1 Zoom call with Graeme Currie TFH this helped her to establish her way to make a better plan to move forward along the journey. Mindset change was key to helping her move forward. Jude reached her goal weight in July 2023 but has gained so much more from the IF lifestyle.

Episode 192 Karen Coleman-Ostrov A 63-year-old lifelong dieter finally finds freedom and the joy of living an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

Episode 192 Karen Coleman-Ostrov A 63-year-old lifelong dieter finally finds freedom and the joy of living an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

Karen is 63 years old and has tried just about every diet you can think of – The Scarsdale Diet, Atkins and keto diets, Weight Watchers, Noom, cabbage soup,

Healthy Inspirations, grapefruit diet, Whole30, Slim-Fast, South Beach, Green Smoothie Diet, Nutrisystem, hCG – if one has heard of it, Karen probably was on it.

Some of these diets brought Karen temporary success, and others caused her to gain weight or slow her metabolism.  None of them were sustainable, and the weight always crept back. One day in the summer of 2020, Karen was perusing Facebook and saw a photo of her sister-in-law, Dedra Campbell.  Karen thought Dedra had posted a “Throwback Thursday” photo, as her sister-in-law looked young, slim, and glowing.  Karen was shocked to learn the photo was recent, so she immediately called her sister-in-law to find out what she did to lose weight and, seemingly, age backwards.  Dedra told her the secret was Intermittent Fasting, which brought up negative thoughts and feelings in Karen.  However, with her sister-in-law’s encouragement, she listened to the basics of the program and bought the book she recommended, “Fast.Feast.Repeat.” by Gin Stephens.  Karen read the book and said she would try it for one day to see how it went.  On August 13, 2020, Karen did an 18/6 fast. When Karen spoke to Dedra about her “trial”, she said it went well and that she would “Start on Monday”.  Dedra encouraged Karen to start right away – after all, she’d just completed her first day of fasting.  Karen agreed and continued fasting with 18/6 since then and has never looked back.  Karen has been faithfully fasting every day since her “trial”. Karen is 5’5”, and her highest weight ever was 208 pounds.  At that weight, she could not bend over to tie her shoes and was always out of breath.  Karen’s IF starting weight was 175.4 pounds, and she set her goal weight at 160 pounds (because she didn’t think at her age, she could get below that number without struggling).  On July 3, 2023, Karen weighed 149 pounds, a weight she hadn’t seen in almost 20 years.  The best thing – there was no struggle.  Yes, it did take nearly three years to lose the weight, but Karen is a Type II Diabetic and has insulin resistance and is menopausal.  While Karen didn’t experience the rapid weight loss that some people are fortunate enough to experience with IF, Karen trusted the process and kept going, sharing NSVs all the time. Intermittent fasting changed Karen’s life and it’s a lifestyle she will stay with forever, as it’s effortless for her.

Episode 191 Karen Cahill-Living a successful intermittent fasting lifestyle losing an incredible 60Kg -132 pounds. We re check in from episode. 117.

By Karen Cahill

I am 59, and I was born in England, but my parents emigrated to NZ when I was 9. I went through school and Teacher’s College in Christchurch, NZ and taught elementary school for a few years before heading overseas. I lived for four years in Japan and four years in Seoul, Korea (teaching English) before settling in the US. I have travelled extensively and loved living in and learning about other cultures. I live outside Atlanta, Georgia and work in the advertising and marketing industry. I am lucky enough to have my mum and sister live 3 minutes away. My extended family is in the US and the UK, but I am still in touch with friends I have made worldwide. I love cooking (and eating), reading, and travel.

Karen has had a remarkable journey with IF, as you will hear in the episode, losing over 130 pounds and 60 Kg, a fantastic feat and one that has inspired many others. She is a ray of light in the Fasting Highway Facebook group, where all truly appreciate her insights and help. Karen was last on the podcast back in episode 117. Earlier this year, Karen got some news that is every parent's worst nightmare. We honour the memory of Karen's son in this episode.

Episode 190 Jalene Weigand -A schoolteachers inspiring intermittent fasting story from Southern California.

Episode 190 Jalene Weigand -A schoolteachers inspiring intermittent fasting story from Southern California.

I can’t remember when I was not focused on my body image. Growing up in Southern California in the 80s as a teenager, imagine was everything. We were bombarded by MTV videos with pictures of beautiful skinny models living life to the extreme yet maintaining a perfect body. I developed very young and was constantly reminded that I was a curvy girl. After having some weight issues as an adolescent, going through puberty, and having my two best girlfriends move away, I can clearly remember the day I discovered I could use food as comfort. I was eating a bag of Doritos while watching TV and felt how the food immediately gave me a sense of relief and a numbing feeling. So, I ate and ate and became chubby. But once I started High School, I felt the pressure of Hollywood nearby, the influence of MTV, and I became a bit boy crazy, so I reeled in the eating and was able to maintain a smaller size; what I kept a secret was I was really binge eating and purging all through high school and into my early 20’s. After a very emotional break-up with my high school boyfriend, I reached my all-time lowest weight. I barely ate anything, and my eating disorder was out of control. The sad thing was nobody even noticed because our toxic society at the time encouraged us to be thin. Being thin was also considered to be desired in my family. Fat people were viewed as being out of control and not disciplined. I do not blame my family or have any negative feelings regarding my childhood. My parents were doing their best and passing on their upbringing.

I started clean fasting in November 2021 and have fasted every day since. I lost the first 20 pounds in the first few months doing a 16/8 approach but then had to do deep dives to find the root causes of my continued health issues. I have fired my primary doctor and found a very helpful endocrinologist who helped me discover that I had zero hormones, had thyroid antibodies and had already gone through menopause. My bloodwork in the previous years was explained to me as “normal,” but what wasn’t described was the numbers were typical for a post-menopausal woman. I had no idea because, in my early forties, I had an ablation surgery that stopped my cycles yet allowed me to have hormones. I had no tell-tell signs of menopause except the weight gain and a feeling of complete despair. So, between fasting and starting HRT, I have successfully lost all my weight gain, and I’m now just living my lifestyle without fear of gaining it back. I’m incredibly grateful to all those who have supported me on this journey. From all the supportive medical professionals to the people like me who successfully found their way back to health and are now sharing their stories to inspire others, I thank you!

Episode 189 Neil Swartz - A husband who is inspired by his wife's success finds great health on his own journey with intermittent fasting.

Neil is 55 years old.  He is a Sales Engineer from Pennsylvania in the US and does a good amount of travelling for work.  He has two grown children and enjoys taking his dog on long walks. He is married to our longtime Fasting Highway member, Belle Swartz and started fasting at the beginning of 2022. Neil was a three-meal-a-day type of guy with some snacks in between.  He became interested in fasting after his wife, Belle, had been fasting for about four years.  He was intrigued by the ability to reduce the number of meals a day from three to two due to time issues. Neil jumped on the fasting bandwagon once he realized that he felt better with fewer meals and less food in general.  He has never looked back!

Episode 188 Karen Finn We talk fasting and menopause and check back in from episode. 52.

Episode 188 Karen Finn We talk fasting and menopause and check back in from episode. 52.

Health & Wellness Coach Karen Finn started her intermittent fasting lifestyle five years ago at age 50 to tackle undesirable menopausal symptoms and return to feeling like herself again. She had spent several years struggling with various symptoms, including weight gain, after being diagnosed as postmenopausal at age 43. Although she had tried other "get healthy" regimens that promised boundless energy and weight loss, nothing delivered a sustainable solution. However, when Gin Stephens' book, Delay, Don't Deny, was recommended through a women's menopause Facebook group, things changed.

Karen wanted to lose the extra menopausal weight that had crept up, but she was mainly keen to improve her overall health and find more energy. After reading Gin's book and joining her DDD Facebook group, Karen jumped in with a 16:8 and never looked back.

Within the first several months, Karen lost the extra weight – around 6kg – and has maintained her ideal weight ever since. She also noticed some menopause-related "non-scale victories", like better sleep, more energy, more stable mood, less bloating, greater mental clarity, lower inflammation and fewer aches and pains.

Within two weeks of starting IF, and before she'd lost weight, friends started commenting that she looked well and were asking what she was doing differently. As her friends started experiencing menopausal symptoms, they came to her for advice. This led Karen down a new career path from health journalist to supporting menopausal women. A lot of Karen's friends followed suit with IF under her guidance. She was so blown away by her and her friends' transformations that she decided to make her career change official and retrained as a health & wellness coach.

Karen continues to write about menopause and intermittent fasting and is a regular contributor to Menopause Matters magazine and co-author of the best-selling book "Women Action Takers Who Gained By Losing: Inspirational and Motivational Stories from Women. Who Use Intermittent Fasting and Will Never Diet Again". She's passionate about helping women regain their old selves – those who felt vibrant, fun, sexy and had a zest for life – by using simple intermittent fasting and self-care strategies. Her most popular offering is the 6-week online course, The Fasting4Menopause Kickstart Programme, which has been very well received.

You can connect with Karen at www.karenfinn.net and follow her on Instagram at @KarenFinnHealth.

Episode 187 Lisa Jasunas Rewriting her own story. 3.5 years of living a successful intermittent lifestyle, a life changing journey.

A 36-year-old mother, wife and “chaos coordinator” juggling a busy phase of life with multiple activity schedules and a demanding career while continuing a wellness journey committed to overall health. It’s an absolute must to make myself a priority through the daily stressors of this busy phase of life as I let food be my comfort through decades of trauma comfort and since starting clean intermittent fasting in October 2019, I cannot see living my life any other way.  Intermittent Fasting over the last 3.5 years has laid the foundation for wellness for me and has allowed me to release 145 lbs. This lifestyle is a true passion of mine. I am committed to sharing my story as I am a different person today than I was when I started this journey. Physically yes, but so much more about me has changed as well. Living a life of body positivity and being able to move in ways I never could before was always just a dream if Intermittent Fasting saved my life from disordered eating and food obsession. It may help anyone that can take the time to listen to this podcast episode, too.

Episode 185 Juliette Osborne - A recap from episode 40-From a wheelchair to running a 5k. An inspiring intermittent fasting lifestyle journey. A catch up from episode 40.

Episode 185 Juliette Osborne - A recap from episode 40-From a wheelchair to running a 5k. An inspiring intermittent fasting lifestyle journey. A catch up from episode 40.

Bio From Episode 40.

Juliette Osborne has been a Christian for 25 years. During that time, she married her favourite person, Michael and had four terrific kids. She became sick during her 3rd pregnancy. Lupus, fibromyalgia, Reynaud, IBS, joint pain, brain fog, pericarditis, migraines, and unbearable fatigue became part of her daily life. Every day was a challenge to achieve any sense of wellness. She decided to choose joy in the struggle. Her family embraced her health trials with love and endurance.

When a friend shared DDD, she jumped in with both feet. After 15 months, her health transformation is just short of miraculous! While she wouldn't trade the last 12 years of illness, she loves her new life on the fasting highway. She often tells her story while reaching out to others to share her faith and the IF lifestyle. She has gone from a size 18 to a ten and dropped 26 lbs in a year. But it was the healing that bears mentioning. She packed up her walker and wheelchair, which she hasn't used in over a year. She has 1 or 2 migraines a month instead of daily. No joint pain, no brain fog, no naps, only great sleep, terrific energy, and blood work to confirm what she already knew. She isn't sick any more! Best of all, she doesn't obsess about anything diet or exercise related. She embraces every day as a blessing, every meal as a treat, and every fast as a time of miraculous healing. She wants to encourage you to do the same.

 "Be blessed...and fast on." Juliette

Juliette returns in this episode to update us on her journey, and some real twists and turns unfold, which inspired me, and I know they will you. I will let Juliette update us.

Episode 184 Elaine & Julian Walker- An inspiring couple who fast and feast together living an intermittent fasting lifestyle

Episode 184 Elaine & Julian Walker- An inspiring couple who fast and feast together living an intermittent fasting lifestyle

I am a 53-year-old woman, mother of two young adult daughters and wife. My husband, Julian and I work for the US government. We initially got into government work after moving from California, USA. We moved to southern Japan, where we finally got a hold of our nutrition, exercise and found intermittent fasting.

At the beginning of March 2018, I went to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned at the military base we worked on. I started intermittent fasting on March 19. I had been in Japan since September 2017 after selling our house in California. I hadn't had my teeth cleaned in a long while. When I went to get my teeth cleaned, I was told that I had a cavity that needed to get filled. However, they couldn't do the filling because they found that I had high blood pressure. They had me see a doctor right there on the base, and he told me I had hypertension. He wanted me to get a blood pressure monitor and gave me a prescription for Lysinopril that day. I bought a blood pressure monitor like the doctor told m. Following the doctor's instructions, my husband helped me track my BP twice daily. However, not once did I take a single dose of that Lysinopril. I knew I had turned my weight around before and could do it again. However, the stakes were higher this time because I could clearly see my health decline. It scared me straight because my dad survived a heart attack when I was in high school, and my mom died of a heart attack just a few months after I graduated college in 1993.

March 19, 2018, is when I first started intermittent fasting. My starting weight was 278. My husband had already begun watching Thomas Delauer videos looking for ways to help our health. Somehow, YouTube pointed me to a Dr Berg video regarding fasting. A couple of his videos got me started with IF. I remember that day I told Julian I was going to eat dinner. I was kind of shy about it, but he immediately said OKAY, I'm going do that too. He was already researching how we could get our health back on track. He was concerned about his because he knew he was pre-diabetic.

We both had several fitness and weight loss ups and downs. In September 2009, he took a job in Iraq, and while he was there, I started Jenny Craig. While there, he gained much weight and reached his highest weight. When I returned, he talked me into doing the P90X workout program with him. We were doing very well with that. But in the Fall of 2011, I fell on some steps at work. I was feeling energetic and was trying to jog up some stairs in heels. I fell on a stage and cracked my patella in my left knee. That kicked off a new decline in health, with minimal exercise.

In May 2015, my father died after a five-year bout of Dementia and Alzheimer's. I also went through a massive layoff in Auto Finance that same month. We didn't turn things around between 2011-2017.

Episode 183 John Beaver -Losing over 110 pounds (50 KG) 1000 clean fasts. A father inspires his son an NSV like no other.

John Beaver, now 53 years old, came to Intermittent Fasting in August of 2020 – partly searching for a solution to his increasingly troublesome migraines and partly looking for some change to a lifelong struggle with weight and obesity.  The results were beyond expectations on both fronts! The migraines have faded to very rare occurrences and his weight began to drop off almost immediately from a beginning weight of 293 pounds down to less than 180 by April of 2022.

Over 110 pounds lost in a short 20-month period after a 40 plus year struggle – thanks to embracing the clean fast and following the tenets put forth in “Fast, Feast, Repeat” and “The Fasting Highway.”   He first appeared on The Fasting Highway podcast in Episode 54 during his weight loss phase back in March of 2021.

John is most proud to have been able to share intermittent fasting with his son, who also lost over 100 pounds with this way of life in short order.  Both of them continue in maintenance range more than 12 months later while embracing all the adventures that life brings them - with far fewer limitations thanks to their intermittent fasting journeys.

Episode 182 Susan Oxley an amazing story of transformation living an intermittent fasting lifestyle over three years. We check back in from episode 109.

My name is Susan and I just celebrated my third fastiversary at the age of 53!  I’m wife to Doug (aka theSaint) J and, kitty cat mommy to the precious and sometimes naughty and knotty boys Leo, Louie, and Simba.I had the pleasure of being a guest on episode 109 of the Fasting Highway podcast.  I hope to share some updates and encouragement for the listeners and community. Just to recap a bit, I have a very long history of dieting!  Check out the graph image I’ve included with my recent pictures.  The graph shows about 40 of my 53 years.  I didn’t develop a real weight problem until my late twenties, but I started dieting to lose “vanity” pounds while in high school.  My drill team instructor weighed us all and I was told I needed to lose 7 lbs to reach the weight of 135.  I’m 5’7” tall.  At the recording of episode 109, I had lost nearly 80 lbs (about 36 kilos) and weighed about 176 lbs.  I’ve continued to lose weight to reach a loss of 90 lbs +/- (about 41 kilos).  On a “good” day more J, on a “bad” day less! I joke a bit, but a lot of us have been there… where the scale dictates how we feel!  I remind myself that 90 lbs, or any amount, lost AND maintained is a victory!

Episode 179 Bobbi Fosberry Ell- A doctors visit and a date night leading to a successful start to an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

Episode 179 Bobbi Fosberry Ell- A doctors visit and a date night leading to a successful start to an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

My name is Bobbi. I’m 53, I have 3 amazing kids and 1 adorable Granddaughter. I have been struggling with my weight since 1997. At that time I was 27 and had just had my second daughter. I weighed in at 230lbs. I was a busy Mom and lived my life for my kids, never taking care of me. In 2017 My Mom passed from complications of her type 2 diabetes and numerous other health problems. I wanted to lose weight but had no idea how. I tried diets and lost a bit but gained it back. Fast forward to October 2021. I was having some health issues. My doctor told me it was probably menopause since I was 51 now. He retired. This became a turning point for me. My new doctor started by doing a full physical on me. The blood work came back with an A1C of 17.8. I had extremely high blood sugar and was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic. The doctor immediately prescribed 4 Metformin and 3 glyburide a day to bring my sugars down. It was that day that I made the decision that I wanted to be healthy, I wanted to live to watch my kids and future grandkids grow up. I did not want to die at 68 like my Mom had. So, I decided to make radical changes. I immediately stopped all sugar and dropped carbs. After 6 months, I added in strength training twice a week. In December 2022, I found a 12 week program to help me beat the diabetes. I had gotten my A1C down to 6.3 but had not been able to drop it further or get off the medication. At my first meeting with the doctor she mentioned my fatty liver and that she wanted me to start IF to help lose the fat. By this time I weighed 187lbs. Only 2 days after this doctor mentioned IF I met a guy for a date. It turned out he has used IF to lose more than 100lbs! So, with the help of the program and Keith, I started doing 12 hour fasts. Within a week I was at a 16 hour fast. I changed my diet a bit more and recently started weightlifting 4 days a week and walking more. Today I weigh 178lbs. While that doesn’t seem like much, it’s huge for me. It’s less than I weighed when I was in my 20’s. More importantly for me are the non-scale victories. In the last 4 months I have gone from XL tshirts to medium and size 14 jeans to size 8. My blood sugars are stabilizing and I’m getting a quicker insulin response…and I’m currently only taking 2 Metformin a day! Within the next couple weeks, I will be stopping the Metformin all together. IF has really helped me to get there How to Support the podcast.

Episode 178 -Ed Pienta, A retired former baseball scout hitting home runs on his inspiring intermittent fasting journey,

Ed Pienta (pee-n-tah) has struggled with his weight since grade school. Everyone called him Husky, and family and friends made excuses for his weight by saying "He was always big boned." He was always active playing sports but always found food as a reward. His childhood doctor even prescribed drugs for weight control. As he entered adulthood, he tried several hospital programs and also Weight Watchers, losing 75 lbs., but continued to struggle with emotional eating, snacking all day, and eating fast food. The rollercoaster of losing and gaining weight continued, and then on Jan. 1st, 2022, the time was right to retire. Almost 70 years old and 252 lbs, he decided to get fit and healthy. Living now in a 55+ community with many options to be active, he decided to work out by walking and swimming. In 10 months, his weight went down to 240 lbs, but then plateaued. Feeling frustrated, he joined a group weighing in weekly at the Lodge; being held accountable might be an answer. After little progress, he met a woman named Phyliss, noticing she had lost a considerable amount of weight. She said she was Intermittent Fasting. He had tried IF in the past but gave up after not seeing any progress after 2 weeks. Phyliss said "Give it time." He started fasting that day with a 16:8 program. Ed purchased Gin Stephens Fast Feast Repeat and Graeme Currie’s The Fasting Highway books. Graeme’s book had an author picture, but Ed felt something was different. After several weeks of 16:8, he moved to 20:4 and saw some progress in the way his clothes fit and how good he was feeling. He began eating healthier while still eating things he liked. No counting points or carbs. While feeling better and clothes fitting better, he started to see weight coming off. On March 31, 2023, the scale read 198.8 -- the first time he was under 200 lbs in 50+ years! He now continues his quest to 185 lbs or so and is more active than ever, swimming 30 laps every other day and walking 2 to 3 miles a day. On May 21st he will play baseball for the first time since 1999 in a 65+ league. It’s now the middle of May, and while the weight loss has slowed a bit, fluctuating plus/minus 3-5 pounds, he is not worrying. About it, he considers Graeme’s book the driving force for a lot of his success.

Episode 177 Hannah and Abbey Chamberlain-Two sisters incredibly inspiring and uplifting intermittent fasting journey.

Episode 177 Hannah and Abbey Chamberlain-Two sisters incredibly inspiring and uplifting intermittent fasting journey.

We are Hannah and Abbey, two sisters from Dunedin, New Zealand. We’re in our mid-twenties and both work in local government. Abbey found the intermittent fasting lifestyle first, beginning around March 2021, however this was somewhat inconsistent. Things got easier once Hannah got on board a year later. After a stint of complete doubt that skipping any meal would ever work,Hannah quickly found that not only was skipping a meal possible, it came with a wide array of benefits and was much easier than anticipated! Growing up, we were never skinny, and found it hard to find the clothes we wanted in our size (this remains one of our big motivators today). After years of trying to lose weight through various diets and gym regimes, we had varying degrees of success, but in an unsustainable manner. It was actually our mum who set us on the path to finding IF, first by recommending the book ‘A Life Less Sugar’, and then ‘The Fasting Highway’ by Graeme Currie when she saw it pop up on Facebook. We are really excited to have finally found a sustainable lifestyle we know we can maintain. Both of us have been focusing on being healthier through reducing sugar, building exercise into our routine, and now we are settled into the OMAD lifestyle.  Another goal for us is being fit for ski season, and to be able to buy stylish snow gear for the slopes – which can be hard to come by in the plus size range. This year, we are excited coming into ski season, having just bought new gear, and being our lightest weights since high school. There’s still a long road ahead, but so far between us we are more than 50kgs down and we are feeling healthier and more determined than ever! Finding IF at such young ages has given us a new lease on life, and we are so excited about the future.

Episode 176 Martin Sher -A 71-year-old retired CEO shares how he uses intermittent fasting for maintaining weight loss, creating a passion to share the benefits.

I am a 71-year-old retired CEO of an 84-year-old family business.  I have been retired for about 15 years.  My passion is to do whatever I can to spread the word about the incredible health benefits of intermittent fasting.  I have lost about 50 pounds on my own customized plan along with intermittent fasting. I have maintained my weight loss for about 15 years. In my retirement, I kept the title CEO, but changed the description to the “Chief Eating Officer.”  I believe everyone should be the “Chief Eating Officer” of their own mind, body, and spirit.  I discovered intermittent fasting on December 20, 2020, when I read “Fast, Feast, Repeat,” by Gin Stephens. It was great timing because I was looking for a sustainable way to maintain my 40-pound weight loss.   I also read “The Obesity Code” by Jason Fung, “The Fasting Highway” by Graeme Currie, and listened to numerous other podcasts. Becoming an intermittent faster was one of the easiest decisions I have ever made.  I adopted a 20-24 hour fasting window during the first week and have been practicing it for almost 2.5 years. I have lost an additional 10 pounds with intermittent fasting and have successfully maintained the 50-pound weight loss. I was CEO of my familybusiness for 35 years.  When I made my irrevocable commitment to lose weight I wrote my own plan. I used the CEO skills I had used my entire adult life.  I taught myself how to eat, how not to eat, how to think, and how to use tiny habits to correct all 17 bad habits I acquired during the first 10years of my life. As the Compassionate Chief Eating Officer, I created my mission, vision, and my core values.  My Mission is to get people out of “Diet Hell” forever. My Vision is customized permanent weight loss and lifestyle plans for all. My 10 Core Values are to be calm, creative, imaginative, positive, kind, truthful, and to have belief, commitment determination and patience. I want to do everything I can to help people get healthy and reach their unlimited human potential.

Episode 175 Sandi Peiffer-An experienced intermittent faster shares her amazing journey along with hints and tips she has learned along the way.

Episode 175 Sandi Peiffer-An experienced intermittent faster shares her amazing journey along with hints and tips she has learned along the way.

SandiPeiffer (Pie fur) has been happily married to her best friend for 36 yrs. She is a 58yr old mother of 4 (ages 18-31) and grandmother of 2(ages 2 and 1) who lives on the Atlantic coast of Florida. She is a veteran homeschool mom of 26 years, her youngest is graduating this year. She enjoys walking, reading, crafting, cooking and spending time with her family. As an adult Sandi has tried most of the diets, we have all heard of… Weight Watchers, Susan Powter Stop the Insanity, TOPS, The Zone Diet, 40-30-30, Shake diets, Suzanne Somers “Somersize”, South Beach, Atkins, The Rosedale Diet, etc. Her real struggle with weight started when she went on an anti-depressant for anxiety. Then the pounds really started to pack on. 120 lbs by the time it was all said and done. She found intermittent fasting after a diagnosis of Type 2. Diabetes with an A1C of 8.4, and a fasting glucose of 237. Though weight loss has been a nice side benefit, she really has had the focus of reversing her diabetes. Starting IF in Dec. 2018, at 5’4” and 300 lbs. Now after 1565 days of clean fasting, she is currently at 240 lbs, but more importantly to her, her A1C is 6.2 and her fasting glucose stays in the 120’s, without diabetes. meds. She started IF by dipping her toe in the water, so to speak. With her previous health issues, especially her recent bout with Adrenal Fatigue, she was determined to be gentle with her body. So she started with 14:10, clean fasting, and didn’t change her way of eating at all. After a couple of weeks, went up to 15:9, then did the same to get to 16:8 and 17:7. She actually lost most of her weight at 17:7, even though she went on to 18:6 and eventually 19:5. Doing OMAD, “restaurant style” at 18:6 and 19:5. After 3 yrs of 19:5 OMAD, her body apparently said that was too stressful. Her cholesterol jumped very high, as well as triglycerides and measures of inflammation. So, through working with a functional medicine Dr., she changed her IF schedule to 16:8 and her diet to a modified Paleo plan. That did the trick and the problems have corrected, and she’s taken off an additional 10 lbs. We are all an experiment of one, and sometimes we have to “tweak” how we practice IF. Listening to our bodies is so important!

Her husband also practices IF and has lost 65 lbs.

Episode 174 Benoit Lamarche -A 52-year-old man tribulations and a pathway to early success tackling lifelong obesity with clean fasting.

Episode 174 Benoit Lamarche -A 52-year-old man tribulations and a pathway to early success tackling lifelong obesity with clean fasting.

I am 52 years young (!) living in rural area in Quebec, Canada near Montreal.  I am blessed to have a beautiful family with 2 daughters who are 12 and 14 and my wife we shared lives together since 1995. I have struggled with my weight all my life. I currently work as a professional engineer keeping busy with implementing and operating industrial composting facilities to make quality. compost from municipal food wastes and green wastes. As a teenager I was very active working on dairy farms, riding.my bike and kept busy all the time.  Entering University, I was spotted by the Athletics department and was directed to their rugby team which I trained for and played during the first year.  But I dropped this from 2nd year because studying for my engineering training became too much intense.  My energy expenditures lowered but it seems not my food (and beer!) intake… and weight started to add on.  In August 2006, I threw down the sink my last can of soda! In January 2008 had a gall bladder attack.  I needed surgery in May and was told I had very fatty liver and I should lose weight on low lipid diet.  Did not work. I’m 6ft (183cm) tall and highest weight was then 330lbs (150kg) from my medical record.  In 2013, I suffered severe gout attack.  Again, I should lose weight...Then in 2014, I came across Dr Robert Lustig in Sugar: The Bitter Truth.  I threw adder sugar and processed foods out of the kitchen. I read Dr. Fung’s Diabetes Code in Summer 2020 and learnt about fasting for health and weight loss for the first time.  And on August 24th,2020 I fasted 24h for 1st time in my life.  But I did not know about clean fasting back then, so it was not sustainable the way I implemented it.  On 1st October 2022, after reading The Fasting Highway by Graeme Currie, I resumed (now clean) fasting, doing OMAD 23-1,7/7.  And that has been a true Eureka moment, on a path to a healthy new me!
