Small business has faced a lot of challenges over the past few decades and has had many opportunities as well. When I look at the most small businesses in our community, the strongest ones have been the ones that have done a great job marketing through social media and have utilized technology to their advantage rather than being victims of it.

As great as social media has been as a tool, it also brings up the risk of over reliance. Something I'll call Platform Risk. What do when the winds of change erase our hard earned followings? How do we prevent having to completely start over every 5 years as the new hot platform takes over? Answer: You need to own the customer relationship.

Today's conversation is with two representatives from MAPS Technologies. They have a cool software created here in Western Pennsylvania that I believe can help small business stay more connected with their customers, more efficient with their marketing, and ultimately be stronger as we seek to continue to rebuild small town America.

I was contacted by our regional census directors to see if I'd be willing to have them on the podcast. Normally, I'm not sure I'd be interested in all of that, but this year is different, so I was excited to be joined by Dr. Dwayne Lehman on the show. The 2020 census is a big deal for Kittanning and Armstrong County. There is a lot of funding that rides on this census along with the fact that many people will be able to make $17 an hour or more by helping to complete the census. It's a great opportunity for individuals and for our community as we move into this pivotal year. Thanks for listening!

It's been quite the journey to arrive at this point. We've done the research, we've analyzed the data, we've had the conversations, and we've received your feedback as well. This is the big reveal for what it takes to be one of the best small towns in America. I think the most exciting thing for me is that this looks achievable. We can do this! Most of us have had a dream to start a small business. For many of us, that idea has been to start a coffee shop. It can be a hard business and it's even harder in a small town, but Sarah Vogel has created an amazing business in Altoona PA against all the odds. We reviewed another list on our journey to become of the best small towns in America. This one had another interesting finding. Most of the cities on the Budget Travel list had vibrant, clean downtown areas. This is one of our main goals in Kittanning 300 is to fill up the downtown and make it vibrant again.
