SCOTUS Declines Case Against Organizer Facing Civil Damages w/ Movement Lawyer Maggie Ellinger-Locke (G&R 287)

SCOTUS Declines Case Against Organizer Facing Civil Damages w/ Movement Lawyer Maggie Ellinger-Locke (G&R 287)

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear McKesson v. Doe. The case involves a police officer injured during a Black Lives Matter protest after the police murder of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La in 2016. The injured police officer sued the organizer DeRay McKesson for damages. Last year, the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit sided with the officer. The Supreme Court, for a second time, declined to hear the case.

The impact of the Supreme Court's decision to decline to hear the case is potentially devastating for organizers of mass protests.

In our latest, Scott talks with movement lawyer Maggie Ellinger-Locke about the case and the precedent it may be setting up.

Bio// Maggie Ellinger-Locke, she/her, is a movement lawyer based in the Washington DC area, living on the stolen land of the Anacostan and Piscataway peoples. She works for the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center at Howard University School of Law, where she helps train the next generation of movement lawyers. Previously she worked as a staff attorney at Greenpeace USA, and has also worked in public policy and private practice. She is currently co-chair of the DC chapter of the National Lawyers Guild. --------------------------------------------------- Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody Links// +Supreme Court declines to hear appeal from Black Lives Matter organizer facing damages suit (https://bit.ly/3xNTh5K) Follow Green and Red//

"Forest Defense is Climate Defense"... Tree-Sit Staged in Southern Oregon to Resist Timber Sale (G&R 286)

Forest defenders have launched a tree sit to stop old growth logging on federal Bureau of Land Management land in Southern Oregon. Community members are opposing the Poor Windy timber sale, which targets thousands of acres of mature and old growth forest. Scott gets an update from two forest defenders fighting the timber sale. Scrappy Tax Day | Your Tax Dollars at Work. Lockheed Martin, "The Grapes of Wrath" and O.J.'s Legacy (G&R 285)

In our scrappy Tax Day episode, we get right down to it. We get into the anniversary of the publishing of "The Grapes of Wrath" and its significance on America and the American Left. We discuss how your tax dollars are subsidizing war profiteers like Lockheed Martin and keeping the war effort in Gaza going while paying for healthcare and public education in Israel. (Meanwhile America's masses are left to fend for themselves.) Scott also talks about a recent direct action at a Lockheed Martin facility in Sunnyvale, CA and the violence perpetrated by the company's employees when they were blocked from parking their cars in the company parking lot. We also discuss O.J. Simpson's legacy on race and politics in America, and NPR's "liberal bias" (and its discontents). How Labor and Climate Movements Are Building An Enduring Alliance w/ Jeff Ordower and Norman Rogers (G&R 282)

The bosses have long pitted workers against those fighting pollution, extraction and the climate crisis. As the climate crisis worsens, labor unions and environmentalists have begun to build important new alliances to challenge the power of capital and industry. In the new anthology, "Power Lines," co-editors Jeff Ordower and Lindsey Zafir discuss the challenges and successes of this growing labor-climate movements. In our latest episode, Scott talks with Jeff Ordower (@moredower) and Norman Rogers (@NormN3D) about the prospects of enduring relationships between labor and climate movements. We discuss just transition, how the bosses often attempt to turn workers against calls for climate action, and how false solutions like nuclear and carbon, capture and storage fall into this landscape. "Fighting Times"... Radical Labor Organizing in the 1970s w/ Jonathan Melrod (G&R 280)

We had a great conversation with longtime labor organizer and activist Jonathan Melrod where we discussed his life in activism, with a particular emphasis on labor organizing during the 70s and 80s, when deindustrialization began to shatter American jobs. Jonathan Melrod is a name synonymous with political activism, labor organization, and human rights advocacy. With his remarkable journey as a survivor of pancreatic cancer, he has defied odds and emerged as a beacon of resilience in the fight for justice. In his compelling book, "Fighting Times," Jonathan chronicles his groundbreaking contributions to a myriad of social movements, including the iconic student movement of the 1960s, the historic civil rights movement, the trailblazing black liberation movement, the empowering women's liberation movement, the urgent call for police reform, and the transformative labor reform movement. Drawing from his personal experiences and tireless efforts, Jonathan offers unparalleled insights into the challenges, triumphs, and untold stories of those who dedicated their lives to the Labor Movement. His words resonate with the spirit of change, emphasizing the significance of collective action and empowering workers to demand their rights. How the FBI Began Its Long Campaign Against the Anti-Pipeline Movement w/ Journalist Adam Federman (G&R 279)

How the FBI Began Its Long Campaign Against the Anti-Pipeline Movement w/ Journalist Adam Federman (G&R 279)

Newly obtained documents reveal that the U.S. government was monitoring environmental activists opposed to the Keystone XL pipeline far earlier than previously known. Young, Native activists were among the government’s first targets. The FBI file describes Native American groups as a potentially dangerous threat and likens them to “environmental extremists” whose actions could lead to violence. The records also reveal for the first time that the State Department was involved in monitoring activists, beginning in late 2013. From the Wobblies to the Black Panthers, this is an all too familiar pattern of the federal government surveilling and spying on anyone that deviates too much from business as usual. In the latest episode, Scott talks with journalist Adam Federman (@adamfederman) about his latest article exposing the U.S. government's spying on the anti-pipeline movement much earlier than thought. Bio// Adam Federman is a reporting fellow with Type Investigations who has written widely on environmental policy, public lands, and corporate and police spying on environmental activists. The recipient of a 2020 Fetisov Award for his environmental reporting, he has written for Politico Magazine, The Washington Post, Wired, Slate, The Nation, and other publications. "Chomsky and Me: A Memoir" . . . Bev Stohl's quarter-century as Chomsky's administrative aide (G&R 277)

For over 25 years Bev Stohl was the administrative aide to Noam Chomsky at MIT. But she was so much more than that . . . not only did she manage his office, but become a close personal friend. She recently wrote a memoir of her time with him at MIT and we had a fantastic and poignant conversation about what Noam is like in "real life," when he's not writing and speaking about world events. We found out that Noam thinks scotch provides him protein. That he loves pets. That after Ali G. got in for an interview he told her "no more gold suits." We discussed how Noam eats egg (singular on purpose). Bev talked about her travels with Noam, including to the Vatican, his long friendship with Howard Zinn, the various people she met who came in to talk with him (including Zack de la Rocha and Tom Morello), how he warmed up to kids and pets, and so much more. It's a rare insight into the personal life of the world's most famous dissident provided by the person was was close to him every day for over a quarter-century. --------------------------------------------------------------- Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody Links// + Chomsky and Me: A Memoir (https://bit.ly/3P8gvcD) +Bev's website: http://bevstohl.blogspot.com/ + Instagram: Chomsky and Me A Memoir (https://bit.ly/3v7jKKy) + Facebook: Chomsky and Me A Memoir (https://www.facebook.com/ChomskyandMeAMemoir) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ + Join our Discord community (https://discord.gg/2skFuHUb) Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR

Don't Dismiss Aaron Bushnell's Act of Resistance w/ Anti-War Veteran Graham Clumpner (G&R 276)

Last Sunday, February 25, 2024, Aaron Bushnell killed himself by setting himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington DC. He did this as an act of resistance to the ongoing genocide in Gaza by the IDF. He was just 25 years old. He was an active duty member of the US Air Force. He live streamed as walked to the embassy and said: “I will no longer be complicit in genocide.I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.”
His final words, shouted several times as the flames consumed him, were “Free Palestine! Free Palestine!”

In our latest, we discuss the self-immolation of Aaron Bushnell. We're joined by our comrade and anti-war veteran Graham Clumpner (@turncoatveteran) to discuss Aaron's act of resistance, anti-war/anti-imperialist sentiment in the military and why the Left continues to fail at connecting with veterans of America's foreign wars. Occupy This! The Legacy of Occupy Wall Street and Bernie Sanders w/ Activist Jay Ponti (G&R 275)

Some see Occupy Wall Street and the campaigns of Bernie Sanders as some sort of viral phenomenon, but don't recognize the importance that decades of organizing against neo-liberalism and empire played into the rise of these movements. Since these moments, we've seen a reshaping of the American political landscape. In our latest, Scott talks with author and activist Jay Ponti about his organizing work in the Occupy movements, and the 2016 and 2020 Bernie Sanders presidential campaigns. They have far ranging discussion about mass movement politics around Occupy , Ferguson, Standing Rock and the Sanders campaigns into the uprisings of 2020 and, more recently, around genocide in Gaza. How Israel is Making Gaza Unlivable ft. Counterpunch's Joshua Frank (G&R 273)

Israel’s genocide on Gaza has led to at least 30,000 dead (including 12,000 children). This past week, we saw the Israelis begin bombing on Rafah and a ground invasion of the last refugee haven in Gaza is expected at any time. But while the Israelis wage their ethnic cleansing campaign with bombs and bullets, they've also weaponized environmental destruction to make sure that no one can return to a land and water poisoned by their war machine.

We talk with Joshua Frank (@joshua_frank) about the weaponization of environmental destruction in Palestinian territories. We also talk about Michael Menesini of the San Francisco's District Attorney office anti-Arab emails to Counterpunch.

Texas Residents Say Border Being Invaded By Far Right Racists, Not Migrants w/ Candice Bernd (G&R 271)

According to the UN, the United States-Mexico border is the world's deadliest land route for migrants, with at least 686 deaths and disappearances in 2023. 148 of those deaths happened in the region along the Texas and New Mexico borders with Mexico. Texas's Gov. Greg Abbott has attempted to create a crisis in Eagle Pass, TX with deadly razor wire fencing and deploying national guard units to police the border. He's been supported by at least 14 Republican governors. Abbott has defied a cease and desist order from Biden, and supported by the U.S. Supreme Court. In the Senate, an (anti) immigration bill recently failed as Trump needs the issue for the 2024 campaign. In our latest, we talk with Truthout's Candice Bernd (@candicebernd) about the crisis being created by Greg Abbott, Donald Trump and other far right political actors. Who Owns Peoples' Park? Berkeley's Historic Struggle. Ft. Mat Wranovix w/ Left in the Bay (G&R 270)

This month, the University of California-Berkeley administration sent a small army of police to secure Peoples’ Park in the south side of campus. The police cleared the park of the people living there, and established walls of shipping containers surrounding the park. The university plans to build 1,100 new units of student housing and 125 units of supportive housing for unhoused people. The struggle to Save Peoples Park has been ongoing for over fifty years. In our latest episode, Scott talks with Mat Wranovix with Left in the Bay (@leftinthebay) about the history and current events of Peoples' Park. Charles Glass on Julian Assange, Middle East Politics and His New Book- "Soldiers Don't Go Mad" (G&R 269)

Charles Glass (@charlesmglass) is one of the more recognized and important journalists of the past couple generations and we had a great discussion with him. First, we discussed the case of Julian Assange, whom he visited in Belmarsh recently, and where it stands and what's coming up. Then we talked about the crisis in Palestine, which Glass is uniquely established to discuss given him past as a journalist in the area, including being ABC's correspondent from 1983 to 1993. Finally he told us about his most recent book, *Soldiers Don't Go Mad,* which is about shell shock and the lives of soldiers in World War I, and features the lives of poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen. ---------------------------------- Outro- "Green and Red Blues" by Moody Links// +Truthout: The US Condemned Stalin’s Prosecution of Journalists. Best of G&R: Remembering Martin Luther King Jr., Radical, Democratic Socialist and Opponent of State Violence (G&R 268)

This weekend, Joe Biden, Donald Trump, lots of Democratic politicians, Republican politicians and corporate weapons manufacturers, fossil fuel companies and Wall Street will engage in their annual performance praising Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of non-violence and racial harmony.

This particularly disgusting in 2024 as Biden is pouring weapons into Israel fueling the slaughter of Palestinians, pouring weapons into Ukraine fueling a bloody war in Europe, bombing Yemen and so much more.

In response to this nausea inducing displace, we're reposting our MLK day episode from 2021. In it, we talk about the radical politics of  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We discuss King's democratic socialist  beliefs, his stance against the war in Vietnam, the campaigns he worked  on, --including the 1968 Olympic Boycott and the Poor People's  Campaign--, and his thoughts on property destruction.

The United Nations Climate Conference Agrees to Transition Away From Fossil Fuels. What Now? w/ Journalist Tina Gerhardt (G&R 266)

The most recent United Nations Climate Conference resulted in an agreement between nearly 200 nations about the next steps in dealing with the climate crisis. It included for the first time ever language around transitioning away from fossil fuels. Heralded in some quarters as "the end of the era of fossil fuels," critics say the deal is filled with loopholes that will undermine efforts to combat the climate crisis. The final text fails to explicitly call for a phaseout of fossil fuels, language sought by over 100 countries. In our latest episode, Scott talks with journalist and author Tina Gerhardt (@TinaGerhardtEJ) about COP28, the negotiations, the agreement, industry influences, peoples' movements influences and what it all means. Biden Will Lose in 2024, and Dems Will Blame the Left (G&R 254)

Joe Biden continues to subsidize and sponsor Israel's ethnic cleansing in Gaza and ignoring an already huge and growing antiwar movement. Yet the Democrats keep cramming him down the voters' throats despite abysmal polling numbers. And when he loses, they will blame the Left.

Another terrible week in Gaza with 7,000 killed by Israel's war crimes. We're also seeing escalations in eastern Syria and on the Israel-Lebanese border. In the U.S., Zionists are attacking, canceling and getting people with pro-Palestinian politics fired.

But, also, movements all over the world are fighting back. In the Capital, hundreds of anti-Zionist Jews were arrested calling for an end to U.S. support of Israel. In New York's Grand Central Station, hundreds more were arrested saying "Not in Our Name, Ceasefire Now."

In the latest Scrappy Sunday, we discuss the ongoing attack and the U.S. and Biden's complicity in it. We discuss how this further sinks Biden's chances of re-election in 2024. And we also discuss the failure of progressive Democrats and academics in this moment. ------------------------------------ Outro- "Intifada" by Doc Jazz, Palestine Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. How State Violence in the Philippines is Propped Up by the U.S. w/ Human Rights Activist Brandon Lee (G&R 262)

The Philippines is one of the deadliest countries in the world for environmental defenders, with 30 environmentalists murdered there in 2018. Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte notoriously called land and environmental activists communist sympathizers and terrorists in an effort to silence them.

In August, 2019, human rights activist and land defender Brandon Lee was the target of an assassination attempt by the Duterte government. He'd been living in the Cordillera region on the island of Luzon working with the Igorot people defending their land. The assassination attempt left him a quadriplegic. In the latest episode, we talk with Brandon about state violence in the Philippines under the governments of Duterte and Marcos Jr. against social movements and communities. We also talk about how the U.S. props up these repressive regimes.

And how the recent APEC meeting in San Francisco was an attempt by Philippine government to recast Marcos Jr. as a moderate and climate conscious leader. bio// Brandon Lee is an environmentalist and Indigenous rights activist based in San Francisco. Kissinger is Finally Dead! Goodbye to a War Criminal . . . and the war in Ukraine muddles along (G&R 261)

Henry Kissinger died last week after 100 years of death and destruction. More than most, he embodied the foreign policy establishment. Kissinger was an architect of liberal post-war foreign policy and perpetrator of many wars, coups and body counts. He advised every president from JFK to Joe Biden. While many liberals reviled him, he mentored many policy makers in Democratic administrations including Hillary Clinton and current Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. In our latest episode, we talk about Kissinger's life and legacy. We talk about Vietnam and Chile and how the liberal world order still functions today as it did in the 60s and 70s when Kissinger was at his peak. We also talked about the continuing bloodshed in Ukraine, more evidence that the U.S. and others scuttled peace talks in the past, and Biden's obsession with wars abroad rather than taking care of problems inside the U.S. We also get into the radical history of the week with a couple examples of anti-Kissingers (including Abby Hoffman and Mario Savio). JFK . . . 60 Years of Myths, Lies and Disinformation (G&R 259)

JFK . . . 60 Years of Myths, Lies and Disinformation (G&R 259)

It's been 60 years since JFK was assassinated and a major industry has developed to write about it, question the official story of Lee Harvey Oswald, and most importantly to revise the historical record of John Kennedy to make him seem heroic, a dove who'd seen the errors of American power and the Cold War. Because of this, the Kennedy Conspiracy Clique argues, the so-called Deep State had him killed because he was going soft on Vietnam, Cuba, the USSR, etc. But these JFK Partisans don't base their work on a careful examination of the actual historical record--the archives, collections, documents and other sources of what was happening *at the time.* They rely on anecdotes and byzantine connections that remind one of QAnon. Yet, this version has gotten significant acclaim and media attention, especially on the Left. It is misguided and dangerous. It's making a hero out of someone who put the needs of the military-industrial complex and the empire above all else, and somehow claim that he was an anti-imperialist. JFK was no hero and surely no dove . . . he was a hard-core militarist, a typical Cold War liberal. He was a supporter of Joe McCarthy, he dragged his feet on Civil Rights in order to placate southern Democrats, and he especially waged war on Vietnam, Cuba and many other areas to assert American power. He brought the world to the brink with his recklessness during the Missile Crisis. We've covered this topic extensively over the years so if you want to learn more about the flaws and holes in the apologetics for JFK, check out https://afflictthecomfortable.org/2023/11/22/jfk-60-years-of-myths-and-disinformation/

"Shut Down APEC!" Anti-War, Labor, Human Rights and Climate Activists Unite Against the Global Elite (G&R 258)

Last week, the San Francisco Bay Area was the center of the political and media world as the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) convened CEO summit and heads of state summit to divvy up the global economy for the billionaire class. This included a high profile meeting between Joe Biden and China’s leader Xi Jinping. In response, a movement of movements (consisting of antiwar, labor, human rights and climate activists, etc.) rose up in protest and direct action to the APEC summit. Howling at the Abyss . . . How the Democrats Moved So Far and So Fast to the Right (G&R 256)

In Green & Red's latest "Scrappy Sunday," we talk about how American moved so far to the right so fast . . . . starting with the 1960s, when Nixon ran a hard-hitting campaign against liberalism, through Carter, who embraced neo-liberalism and abandoned the core of Democratic ideology, through the total buy-in of corporatist policies with Clinton and Obama, the Democratic Party has moved steadily to the right, and in most cases when their position on key issues like abortion rights and gun violence, had majority support. At the end of the day, we can attack the GOP all we want--and there are plenty of bigoted, racist, and sociopathic Republicans to attack, but the failure to offer any alternative or resistance to the GOP and adoption of corporate and conservative ideas is what's sent us off the rails and into the abyss. ------------------------------------------ "Bad Moon Rising" by CCR Links// +G&R: Jimmy Carter is a Liberal Saint Now, Was a War Criminal Then… (https://bit.ly/3ROC3NR) +G&R: Noam Chomsky on Why the Democrats Suck (https://bit.ly/3FLpf3p) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. "When We Fight": The Story of the 2019 LA Teachers Strike (G&R 255)

In Los Angeles, the second largest school district in the United States, 98% of teachers voted to authorize a strike. Filmmakers Yoni Golijov and Yael Bridge shadowed L.A. teachers for five months as they organize and strike, providing a unique first-hand account of collective democracy and labor action, and shedding light on the nationwide teacher strike upswell. Their film "When We Fight" documents one of the largest educator strikes in modern U.S. history in real-time, highlighting the stories and leadership of some of the women who led it, from union leaders to classroom teachers.

In our latest, we talk with Yoni and Yael, as well as LA teacher and labor leader Arlene Inouye about the 2019 and 2023 strikes, how they organized, the impacts they had on education and politics and how it fits in with the "Hot Labor Summer" we've been seeing this year.

Bio// Yoni Golijov is a nonfiction filmmaker; his producing work has been nominated for the Academy Award and the BAFTA and has won an Independent Spirit Award. Yael Bridge is an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker. Her first feature, The Big Scary "S" Word, explores the history and resurgence of socialism in the United States. Arlene Inouye was the chair of the bargaining committee in 2019 and the last contract, 2023, and was integral to leading the strike that the film documents and the incredible solidarity strike that UTLA took this year with their SEIU school co-workers. ------------------------------------------------ Outro- "There is Power in a Union." by Utah Phillips Links// +"When We Fight": https://www.whenwefightmovie.com/ + New Day Films: "When We Fight" (https://bit.ly/3FFT6dJ) Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ +We're part of the Labor Podcast Network: https://www.laborradionetwork.org/ Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Best of G&R: Cuban Missile Crisis at 60. Was JFK really hero? (G&R 253)

61 years ago this month, in October 1962, Americans anxiously heard news for almost two weeks straight about the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba, less than 100 miles away from the U.S. Nuclear War was possible, to some imminent. In this encore episode from 2022, we offer a brief history of the Cuban Missile Crisis and, more importantly, a remembrance and reconsideration of the events of October and JFK actions throughout the crisis. JFK has been praised for his firm resolve, courage, and strength in handling the crisis but the reality is that he was provocative and almost caused a war against Russia. In this episode we'll start by giving a background on JFK's aggression toward Cuba, then we'll offer a brief narrative of the crisis, and finally we'll discuss how Kennedy continued his subversion against Castro's government after the Missile Crisis. JFK was not heroic. His recklessness and need for credibility almost caused a nuclear exchange. The media doesn't tell you this story. Green and Red does . . . ---------------------------------- Outro- "We'll Meet Again" By Vera Lynn Links// The best resource for the Missile Crisis is the National Security Archive, at https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/. On Thursday, there was a mass blockade of Citibank’s headquarters over their funding of the climate crisis. Hundreds of Citi employees forced to were wait on the street before returning to work and torching the planet. Sunday is the mass march to “End Fossil Fuels.” And more climate direct action to follow. We discussed the climate crisis, what’s happening and who’s responsible. The Sierra Club is one of the oldest and largest environmental groups in the U.S.. It also has a problematic history, from being founded by racist John Muir to members penning the racist "Population Bomb," advocating for population control, to former director Carl Pope promoting corporate greenwashing. Earlier this year, politician Ben Jealous became the organization's new executive director and began a process of "restructuring" due to budget deficits. The restructuring led to layoffs that included the equity and environmental justice teams. Talking Trash: The Global Garbage Crisis w/ Oliver Franklin-Wallis (G&R 243)

In much of the developed world, waste is out of sight and out of mind. The world generates around 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, with at least 33% of it not managed in an environmentally safe manner, according to a 2018 World Bank report. Though high-income countries only account for 16% of the world’s population, they generate about 34% of the world’s waste each year. A third of all food produced is wasted and ends up in the garbage can. Plastic waste is another mounting issue: Across the globe, less than 10% of it is recycled, according to the most recent data from 2018 published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Plastic waste has more than doubled globally since 2000. Apple's diversity commitments end when asked to do the right thing w/ organizer Robby Diesu (G&R 242)

Like many corporations in Silicon Valley, Apple claims to be supportive of the LGBQT community. Even more than most as Apple's CEO Tim Cook is openly gay and the senior vice president of retail and former head of People (i.e human resources), Deirdre O’Brien, is also a member of the community. Every Pride month the company proudly claims “support” of the LGBQT community, it sells rainbow bands for Apple watches in its stores and claims to provide same-sex benefits to its employees. But as a former employee and his partner recently found out, that support only goes so far. In the latest, Scott talks with comrade Robby Diesu (@robbythequeen) about their, and their partner's, experience with Apple while working for the company in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Journalist Will Potter on How the State and the Media Go After Radical Movements (G&R 241)

We’re in an unprecedented rollback of civil liberties. States are passing laws to outlaw protests and direct action, charging non-violent protesters with “domestic terrorism” and legalizing the running over of people blocking traffic. State surveillance of activists has increased dramatically. Police budgets are getting astronomical increases to further militarize the state. In Atlanta, in the Stop Cop City campaign, police assassinated a forest defender, Tortuguita, who had their hands up and then tried to claim self-defense. To put this all in context, we talk with investigative journalist and author Will Potter (@will_potter). We discuss the Stop Huntington Animal Cruelty campaign, the Earth Liberation Front, the taming down of climate actions in the 2010s and how the police state ignored right wing terror groups in the same period. We also discuss the role of the FBI and the liberal corporate media in going after radical movements, how Cop City is shifting things and where popular culture fits into the story. Bio// Will Potter is a thought leader and investigative journalist whose work has focused on social justice and environmental movements, and attacks on civil rights post-9/11. He’s the author of “Green Is the New Red: An Insider’s Account of a Social Movement Under Siege,” that exposed the criminalization of nonviolent protest groups by the FBI. Stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline w/ Appalachians Against Pipelines (G&R 240)

The Mountain Valley Pipeline is a 300 mile long fracked gas pipeline cutting across the mountains and waterways of Appalachia. For the past five years, Appalachians Against Pipelines (@stopthemvp) has waged a fierce direct action campaign against it with tree-sits, blockades and civil disobedience. Along with battles being waged in the courts and the public eye, the campaign had successfully impeded the construction of the pipeline until Joe Biden and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin made an agreement to fast track the pipeline's construction during the recent debt ceiling negotiations. And with a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision (with all nine justices voting to greenlight the pipeline), the pipeline is moving forward again. In our latest episode, Scott talks with Charlie, an organizer with Appalachians Against Pipelines, about the pipeline, the politics around it and the direct action campaign resisting it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Outro// "Across the Blue Ridge Mountains" by the Carter Family Links// +Appalachians Against Pipelines: https://www.facebook.com/appalachians... +What the Supreme Court’s order means for the future of the Mountain Valley Pipeline — and for West Virginia (https://bit.ly/3DKWJy3) +Supreme Court rules in favor of Mountain Valley Pipeline (https://bit.ly/3qq8CGv) + To get involved with the campaign, email appalachiansagainstpipelines@protonmail.com Follow Green and Red// +G&R Linktree: https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast +Our rad website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ Support the Green and Red Podcast// +Become a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast +Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Best of G&R: Hiroshima and "Atomic Diplomacy," 78 Years Later (G&R 239)

It's the 78th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. With decisions to drop atomic bombs being discussed with the release of Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," we thought we'd repost this episode from 2020.

Enjoy!

From the 2020 episode:

"For years, large majorities of Americans have believed that the U.S. had to use the A-Bomb against Japan on August 6th, 1945 to end the war quickly and avoid a land war and thus save one-million American lives.

Scott and Bob discuss the use of the bomb, why it was used as a message to the Soviet Union and not a military necessity, the chronology behind the development and deployment of atomic weapons, the U.S. public response to it, and the creation of a new history, a propaganda piece, regarding the use of the bomb. The dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima was vital in the development of the Cold War, the arms race, the military-industrial complex, and the National Security State.

Seventy-five years after the first atomic weapon was used by the U.S., it's still a highly-debated and important topic."
