#49 - Leah Lawson

#49 - Leah Lawson

Her songs are crafted with rich imagery and a hint of nostalgia. Her voice is moving and intense. Often standing alone on a large stage with just a baby blue telecaster and some nervous banter, Leah Lawson’s presence captivates.

Growing up in Florida, Lawson was homeschooled throughout her formative years and raised in a sheltered, evangelical Christian home. Music became Lawson’s conduit to reckon with her religious trauma and faith deconstruction, in addition to the universal feelings of longing, loss, and love we all share.

The raw, intimate, and candid way Lawson writes makes you feel like you’re overhearing an intimate conversation between close friends. With her delicate vocals accompanied by her folky guitar stylings Lawson transports the listener to a place of comfort; like a trusted confidant simply responding, “Me, too.”

“I think when you grow up the way I did, immersed in the evangelical church, and then you decide to leave that life behind, it can feel really isolating and people may not understand,” says Lawson. “I want others to feel validated in that it’s okay to explore life beyond what you were taught and what you used to believe. I want people to know they aren’t alone and it’s okay to be honest with yourself.”

After spending several years living in Nashville, TN, Lawson is currently residing in Asheville, NC, and preparing to release her debut album, Flood House. The album was recorded at Way Out Studios in Seattle, WA, and produced by Trevor Spencer. Flood House will be released on September 16, 2022, and available for streaming/download on all major music platforms. #43 - SEASON 3! With Kaylee Steffel of Steffel Media

#43 - SEASON 3! With Kaylee Steffel of Steffel Media

With charisma to match the images she produces, Kaylee Steffel is on the rise as  one of the most in-demand photographers on the Nashville music scene. For Steffel, creativity has always been the outlet. However, she vividly remembers  the first show that sparked her interest in live photography. “Carrie Underwood.  The Play On Tour. She was circling the crowd in a blue truck, swinging on a swing.  It was magical,” the 27-year-old says. Cutting her teeth photographing intimate country shows as well as high-energy  festivals and artists in Ohio and surrounding states, she wanted more of those  moments. After university, she headed into the corporate world working for a Fortune 500  company, but didn’t see a lifetime career. “I knew I wouldn’t be happy without  giving it a shot at touring and creating in the music space full-time.” In November  2019, Steffel took the leap after years of waiting and relocated to Nashville, TN. By January 2020, she had a published photo of award-winning artist, Rhonda  Funk, in the Nugget Newspaper (Sisters, OR.) — a career first. Unfortunately as  her career was hitting a stride, the world shut down. Navigating this proved  difficult; however, she pivoted into portraiture and content creating for influence  marketers. Originally capturing Country artists exclusively, Steffel has expanded into a wide  array of genres including Rap and Pop-Rock. This proved fruitful for her as she  found her work getting placements in publications far and wide with Pop-Rock’s  Eddie and The Getaway and Pop singer-songwriter, Cassandra. Currently, the Nashville-based creative works as the live photographer for country  artist, Ashley Barron, as well as rapper, Hew G., along with creating for a variety of  artists across the music spectrum. #35 - Get Over It : Minnie Murphy

#35 - Get Over It : Minnie Murphy

Lauren & Jeff welcome Minnie Murphy into the Groove Lab to discuss her new single, "Get Over It".

Minnie Murphy was born with music in her DNA. Raised in a musical family, father Jimmy Murphy, a guitarist, mother Patricia Murphy, a piano player,
and she’s a half-sister to early-2000s country staple, Jamie O’Neal. Murphy voyaged across the country with her father to Nashville, where she had the opportunity to write songs with some of the industry’s finest and record a handful of them at the mere age of 16. She has also performed on stages like the Grand Ole Opry and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, to weekly jobs playing piano and singing cover songs with some of her originals mixed in at Maggiano’s and Sambuca in Nashville. For over a decade, she has been in Nashville, working as a writer and recording demos. Minnie’s new single, “Get Over It,” is reflective and delivers a potent mix of classic traditional country along with her unique musical ability to bring passion and real deal emotion to life, both vocally or instrumentally. Her new LP, Evergreen, is due out later in 2021.

#32 - Transit : Meredith Crawford

#32 - Transit : Meredith Crawford

Lauren and Jeff welcome East Texas Singer/Songwriter Meredith Crawford into the Groove Lab to talk about her musical journey, and finding her voice. Check her out at www.MeredithCrawford.com

“Meredith Crawford has successfully taken something with a very definitive shape, and made it seem shapeless. Historically speaking, that kind of dreamy musical witchcraft has only been successfully accomplished by the likes of timeless wonder-women like Patsy Cline, Stevie Nicks, or the queen: Aretha Franklin; herself.” She was singing harmonies at the young age of 10 from the pew surrounded by strangers, to the Opry circuit around Texas by 16, and had fronted 3 bands by the age of 27. Just shy of 30, she has written over 200 songs, opened for Texas acts such as Hayes Carll, Sunny Sweeney, and Shiny Ribs, and has won several awards including Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year (2 years running), Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year for East Texas. A dark horse in the running, her pinnacle of musical strength is perched upon raw, lyrical honesty delivered through painfully elegant vocals.

#31 - Bar & R : Don Pedigo

#31 - Bar & R : Don Pedigo

Lauren & Jeff welcome Don Pedigo into the Groove Lab to talk all about his time in the music city, his songwriting process and his upcoming releases. Check him out at https://www.donpedigo.com - Don Pedigo is one of Nashville’s finest Singer-Songwriters whose old-soul rock and roll vibe and thoughtful lyricism takes you on an introspective adventure, leaving you not only wanting to know more about his music but also about yourself. Pedigo describes his songwriting as, "Real life. Everything is directly or indirectly a personal experience. I may embellish it, but everything is connected to me.” Upon listening, your ear may beg you to remember some iconic musicians such as Gram Parsons or Tom Petty, but in Pedigo’s uniquely individual style that can’t be replicated, his songwriting delivers something modern and refreshing to the listener. Don Pedigo has been cited as being a, “Spirit questing, true Roots-Rock artist.”, and coming after his recent excursions out West to New Mexico, he has found an even deeper meaning pushing him to write songs that will connect with people right where they are.  "I want to touch the ground, meet the people, feel the rhythm, and write it down.”, says Pedigo. Because of this mantra he holds, Don resonates with listeners because his experience is first-hand and his lyrics show an authentic understanding of everyman's share of troubles and triumphs.

#29 - Talking to Ghosts : Bridget Rian

Lauren & Jeff welcome Bridget Rian into the Groove Lab to talk all about her new EP and her love of sad songs.

The debut EP from Bridget Rian, Talking to Ghosts, is a delicate, dark and intricate collection of stories rooted in the bittersweet honesty about the fragile human condition. Exploring themes of mortality, loss, and nostalgia, the New York-raised singer-songwriter brings profound comfort to the listener with her ethereal vocals and contemplative storytelling.

“I wanted to name the EP Talking to Ghosts because in every song I am either talking to someone who has died, my past self, or talking about ghosts,” says Rian. “There are also some old, interesting family stories about me as a baby talking to ghosts… so it’s a topic close to my heart.”

#19 - New Ink : Manny Blu

#19 - New Ink : Manny Blu

From professional MMA fighting, to country music. This week, Lauren Alexander talks with Canadian country music artist Manny Blu about his interesting introduction into the music industry, and his new EP "New Ink" https://mannyblumusic.com YEARS BEFORE HE CRISS-CROSSED NORTH AMERICA AS AN ACCLAIMED COUNTRY SINGER AND A TRUE ROAD WARRIOR—PLAYING NIGHTLY SHOWS IN SUPPORT OF HIS 2019 DEBUT ALBUM LEAVE IT LIKE IT IS, WHILE ALSO SHARPENING THE LARGER-THAN-LIFE SOUND THAT WOULD FILL HIS 2020 FOLLOW-UP EP NEW INK—MANNY SPENT HIS DAYS IN THE GYM, TRAINING FOR A CAREER AS AN MMA FIGHTER. WHEN A LEG INJURY LEFT HIM UNABLE TO COMPETE IN PROFESSIONAL MATCHES, BLU FOUND HIMSELF AT HOME IN MONTREAL, RECOVERING FROM A TORN QUADRICEP AND LOOKING FOR A NEW PASSION TO PASS THE TIME. WHAT HE FOUND WAS A RENEWED APPRECIATION FOR MUSIC: FIRST, THE GUITAR-DRIVEN BLUES OF B.B. KING, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN, AND JOHN MAYER; NEXT, THE EASYGOING SWAGGER AND RELATABLE STORYTELLING OF MODERN COUNTRY. ACCOMPANYING HIMSELF ON THE GUITAR AND SINGING IN AN EXPRESSIVE VOICE, MANNY BEGAN TAKING REQUESTS FROM THE FRIENDS WHO'D COME OVER TO THE HOUSE TO VISIT. THOSE CASUAL PERFORMANCES MARKED HIS FIRST TIME PLAYING MUSIC FOR ANYONE, AND THE EXPERIENCE LEFT A PERMANENT MARK. "THAT WAS HOW IT ALL STARTED," MANNY REMEMBERS. "ALL OF MY FRIENDS WERE LIVING IN OTHER TOWNS, PLAYING HOCKEY. THEY'D COME BACK TO MONTREAL DURING THE SUMMER, ONCE HOCKEY SEASON WAS OVER, AND THEY'D ASK ME TO PLAY THE COUNTRY SONGS THEY'D BEEN LISTENING TO. I LEARNED ALL THE HITS…AND I LEARNED THERE'S A CULTURE AND A VIBE TO COUNTRY MUSIC THAT'S LIKE NOTHING ELSE." MANNY NOW CONTINUES TO BRING HIS OWN VIBE TO COUNTRY MUSIC, CREATING AN ORIGINAL SOUND THAT MAKES ROOM FOR HIS BLUES AND ROCK & ROLL INFLUENCES. HE INTRODUCED THAT SOUND WITH LEAVE IT LIKE IT IS, A DEBUT RECORD THAT EARNED HIM THOUSANDS OF NEW FANS AND PRESENTED HIM WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO HIT THE ROAD. MANNY SUBSEQUENTLY SPENT TIME IN NASHVILLE, IMMERSING HIMSELF IN MUSIC CITY, BEFORE HEADING BACK UP NORTH ONCE AGAIN--THIS TIME WITH HIS BAND OF HARD-EDGED COUNTRY ROCKERS IN TOW—TO SERVE AS FELLOW CANADIAN COUNTRY ARTIST GEORGE CANYON’S OPENING ACT DURING A TWO-MONTH TOUR. NIGHT AFTER NIGHT, MANNY HIT THE STAGE WITH A MISSION, AIMING TO WIN OVER THE CROWD WITH AN UNDENIABLE LIVE SHOW. THE GUITARS GOT LOUDER. THE DRUMS GREW EVEN MORE PUMMELING. AND THE SONGS BECAME EVEN MORE ANTHEMIC. IN NASHVILLE, HE BEGAN PIECING TOGETHER A NEW RECORD—ONE THAT SHOWCASED THE LESSONS HE LEARNED ON THE ROAD. WORKING WITH PRODUCER AARON ESHUIS AND HIT SONGWRITERS LIKE JOSH OSBORNE, RHETT ATKINS, AND ROSS COPPERMAN, MANNY BLU EMERGED FROM NASHVILLE'S OMNISOUND STUDIOS WITH NEW INK. FROM “BORN TO RIDE” TO "SINK," THESE NEW SONGS TELL RELATABLE STORIES ABOUT LOVE, LOSS, BREAKUPS, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN, ROOTED IN AN AMPLIFIED MIX OF COUNTRY TWANG AND HEAVY ROCK & ROLL ATTITUDE. "I WANTED THE ALBUM TO SOUND THE WAY WE DO LIVE," SAYS MANNY. "THERE'S MORE ROCK, MORE SOUL, AND MORE VOLUME THIS TIME AROUND. IT'S BIGGER AND LOUDER, BUT IT'S STILL ME. AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT'S STILL FUN." RAISED AS A VERSATILE ATHLETE WHO PLAYED HOCKEY, SOCCER, AND FOOTBALL BEFORE KICKSTARTING HIS MMA TRAINING AT 16-YEARS-OLD, MANNY BLU HASN'T LOST THAT FIGHTING SPIRIT. IF ANYTHING, HE'S GOTTEN STRONGER, LEARNING TO ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES AND KNOCK DOWN ANY OBSTACLES IN HIS PATH. NEW INK, WITH ITS HARD-HITTING HOOKS AND COUNTRY-ROCK EDGE, IS THE SOUNDTRACK TO A CAREER ON THE RISE--AND MANNY BLU IS READY TO DELIVER A KNOCKOUT BLOW.

#18 - Burnin' Moonlight : Connor Christian / The Southern Gothic

#18 - Burnin' Moonlight : Connor Christian / The Southern Gothic

"I'm gonna be a singer! I'm gonna take Michael Jacksons Place!"  Connor Christian, front man and main songwriter of the Nashville based band The Southern Gothic talks about childhood dreams & the bands new EP "Burnin' Moonlight" www.thesoutherngothicmusic.com - For Connor Christian, frontman & principal songwriter of The Southern Gothic, life has always been about the journey.  The son of an American serviceman & diplomat, that journey started at 6 months old, when his family moved from Los Angeles to Jakarta, Indonesia and from there on to places such as Singapore, South Korea, and Belgium, as well as stints all over the US.  “I never lived anywhere long enough to think of it as a hometown, to make those lifelong memories and associations, so I learned to take little pieces from every stop and make them part of my story” That story led Connor to Atlanta GA as a young adult.  Stints in several other bands led to the formation of The Southern Gothic with former Truckadelic drummer Shawn Thacker.  What started as a high energy, house cover band at venerated Atlanta dive bar, Dixie Tavern, grew along with Connor’s writing to become the band that Billboard Magazine called it’s ‘Band on the Verge’.  Ten months later, the band’s second album, ‘New Hometown’ debuted #1 on Billboard’s Heatseeker chart and #17 on it’s country albums chart.  The same month, the first single from the record, “Sheets Down” reached #1 on CMT’s Pure Country 12-Pack Countdown, a spot it held for 4 weeks.  The album, a 20-song semi-autobiographical opus, equal parts Tennessee Williams & Homer, “Tumbleweed Connection” era Elton John, Guns n Roses and Chris Stapleton - tells the story of a man looking for a home, and artist searching for his muse, and a band finding its own way. People surprised by the band’s ‘overnight’ chart success hadn’t been paying attention to the way the band built that excitement.  Averaging almost 200 shows per year for the previous 4 years, the band built a chemistry with each other and a reputation for an electric live show – even the acoustic ones.  Sharing stages with bands as diverse as Willie Nelson, ZZ Top, Uncle Kracker, Styx, Zac Brown Band, and Heart, SoGo’s honest lyrics, heartfelt melodies, and stellar musicianship cut through to appeal to fans across the world without regard to genre, age, or locale. With the 2020 release of  the Southern Gothic’s New EP, Burnin’ Moonlight,  Connor, Thacker and the band prove again that they will continue to evolve, unbound and unafraid to explore new territory every time out.  Working with Grammy-winning producer Jonathan Roye (Kelsey Ballerini) and Grammy-nominated producer Keith Hetrick (Charlie Wilson) SoGo explores the intersection of Americana, Pop, and Rock n’ Roll to create something uniquely now and undeniably, The Southern Gothic.
