Good Grief 3: Supporting a parent in dementia. : Joe Kelly

Episode 49: We met Joe and his family at a local restaurant sitting outside looking at the expanse of grass and trees at our local public golf course. We took an immediate liking to Joe. We learned that his father lives in one of the two 55+ apartment buildings in our neighborhood, and that his father is suffering with dementia.

The slow process of dementia has been taking Joe’s father from his family over the last three or four years. Joe spends a lot of time supporting his father. In our conversation with Joe we talked about how his father has given him the tools he needed to create his own path. Joe’s stories speak to the reality of dealing with life and the inevitability of dying.

Joe gives his father a lot of credit for his success, including creating and selling a businesses and creating a new one.

Here is a list that his father gave him early in his career.

I AM A LEADER

I have a clear sense of purpose. I know what needs to be done.

I am persistent. I invest whatever time or effort required.

I have self-knowledge. I understand my own strengths and weaknesses.

I am a perpetual learner. I am constantly developing new skills.

I love my work. I see it as an adventure.

I have the ability to attract and energize people through example.

I am emotionally mature. I accept people for how they are - not how I want them to be. I deal with the present - not the past. I don't take people for granted. I trust people. I don't need constant approval.

I am a risk taker. I have a strong sense of purpose and I am fearless.

I see mistakes as opportunities and learning experiences.

I know that leaders are followers - they strive to serve the needs of others.

Joe currently owns a BitCoin Financial Services company located in Austin. Here is a link to his company's web site :https://unchained.com/ Some of Joe's friends are associated with Qualia Research Institute

Life and music in Austin: Episode 22: Howie Richey: 06|20|21

I think Howie Richey’s Twitter account says it all:

Howie Richey (@howzow). Party host, ace Texpert tour guide, social designer, woodworker, word arranger, radio personality, funny sort. He has also written a book about Austin called Party Weird and that is the link to buy it.

We met Howie through his wife Linda Anderson who showed up at our Tai Chi group and then both of them showed up at a campout event near Castroville, TX that was hosted by a mutual friend. They are the kind of interesting, out of the box, folks we generally are drawn to.

Howie came to the “Studio” in our house for this interview.

Anti Ageism by two thirty somethings: Episode 21: 05|26|21: Kyrié Carpenter and Ryan Baker:

Anti Ageism by two thirty somethings: Episode 21: 05|26|21: Kyrié Carpenter and Ryan Baker:

First, we are glad to be back from the long break we took during the pandemic. What with selling and buying a house, moving our furniture in to storage, traveling around to AirBNBs and then moving all that stuff in storage back into a new house and then to both have to go in for surgery… it has been an eventful time.

But today, we are back and excited about our two guests. Our primary focus is on Growing Old(er)! and we are all doing that, but our guests today helped create a website/clearinghouse for resources to combat Ageism. That site is OldSchool.info and they worked with Ashton Applewhite to make it happen. People are always surprised to hear that Ani and I are approaching 80. That is because they have an idea of what 80 looks like and have a skewed vision of what 80 year olds should act like.

Kyrié (Kee-re-ay) Carpenter (6/6/86) has an interesting website called Kyrieosity.com. She does keynotes and workshops to “plant the seeds of personal and cultural growth” and also is managing editor of the blog posts on ChangingAging with Dr. Bill Thomas. I took the effort to read her masters thesis to see what she had to say about the Anti-Aging myth in America. She has an interesting take and I will ask her about that.

Ryan Backer (6/8/88) is a self-proclained Age Activist - They identify as a white, non-binary, European-American ‘old person in training’ with a BS degree in Gerontological Studies. He also aims high, aiming to eradicate all forms of oppression. On his website AgeActivism.Com he talks about his workshops called AGE QUEER.

Sit back and relax and lets see what our guests have to say about Anti-Ageism and Growing Old(er)!.

86 years young: Episode 20: 08/10/2020: Chris Crowley

86 years young: Episode 20: 08/10/2020: Chris Crowley

Episode 20: Hosted by Preston "Ty" Tyree and Ani Colt: The conversation in this episode is far ranging but keeps coming back to being active physically and mentally to maintain your edge into your 80's and beyond. Chris Crowley, 86 year old Author of Younger Next Year: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy - Until You're 80 and Beyond has sold over 2 million copies and been translated into 23 languages. This book was his first about what you can do to help you age better and enjoy aging more. Chris also recommends his book Younger Next Year The Exercise Program and Fit Forever videos. The newest edition of the YNY book has new material about keeping mentally active as well. Chris quoted his co-author, Henry Lodge as saying "how long you live is 80% genetics and how well you live is 20% genetics."

Chris and I met at a bicycle camp in Connecticut 15 years ago just after his book was first published. Now he has released a new edition with new material about mental aging and staving off Alzheimer's disease. The 20th episode Growing Old(er)! seemed a great time to ask him to talk about what he has learned about aging well.

We are approaching 1,000 plays of the 20 episodes and that is a major milestone for us. Pandemic, Black Lives Matter, fear, love and sexuality and spirituality: Suzann Robins: Episode 17: 06/14/2020

Episode 17: Hosted by Ani Colt: Ani Colt speaks with her friend Suzann Robins -- a 30 minute conversation that covers gender, labels, the importance of embracing diversity and so much more. Suzann, who Ani sees as a really smart woman, speaks of us living in a world where we are afraid of each other -- that this is not a way to love -- why we need to stand on the side of love. Suzann uses phrases such as “emotion is energy in motion”, and intimacy: “if I let you see into me -- then we have intimacy.” Suzann and Ani scheduled the interview to discuss the murder of George Floyd and the conversation reached further into many diverse issues. Suzann and Ani came together for friendship and higher purpose work shortly before 9/11, another world changing atrocity.
Suzann's book is Exploring Intimacy - Cultivating Healthy Relationships through Insight and Intuition. Suzann Robins. It's widely available in print and e-book formats. One of the things that Suzann does is lead Cuddle Parties and more information can be found at this link.

Living outside of the box: Episode 13: Epiphany Jordan: 04/27/2020

Epiphany Jordan lives out of the box, and this interview with her helped me discover why she is so darn interesting, starting with her parents. Her Jewish grandfather was on the run from the Nazis right before World War Two started. Her mother was born in Palestine and is half Catholic and half Jewish. Her Muslim father was born in India, and grew up in South Africa. Each came to USC for college. Both of her parents were academics in Reno where Epiphany was born. She shares in the interview about her unique spirituality and that one of her core strengths or pillars of her personality is around nurturing. Epiphany is the author of the book Somebody Hold Me, the single person's guide to nurture human touch, Our recording was done during the COVID-19 pandemic.
