Growth Platform talks to Dr Andrew Rose, Head of Commercial Engagement and Marketing at the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust. Andy works with a diverse range of companies and other organisations to support the Trust’s commercialisation and innovation activities. Prior to The Walton Centre, he worked in a variety of companies, NHS, university and economic development roles (including with the LCR LEP/Growth Platform).

In this episode, we talk about the specialised services at The Walton Centre and their values-driven approach to working practices. Andrew talks about the innovations and the collaborative approach they have with local organisations in Liverpool City Region and advises on how to get innovative products into NHS.

He has a specialist interest in cardiology and was previously the Primary Care Lead for the Cheshire and Merseyside Cardiac Network and helped to develop the Wirral Intermediate Cardiac Clinic.

He joined the management team of Wirral PCT and subsequently became Chairman of NHS Wirral Clinical Commissioning Group, where he led the organisation through its development and authorisation.

He moved to NHS England/Improvement North West as deputy medical director, a role he continued part-time in his first year with the Innovation Agency.

Darren works in CPI’s Strategy team, leading on programmes to create new business units, such as the National Packaging Innovation Centre, having previously delivered the business case for the £28m National Formulation Centre.   Darren also leads on CPI ‘go to market’ strategies across FMCG and Food and Drink, and Grand Challenges themes including Circular Economy and Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging.  Darren has facilitated strategic public/private investments, including with Unilever, P&G, AkzoNobel and Innovate UK (the UK innovation agency), to a value of >£120M over the last 5 years.

Professor Raphaela Kane is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health at Liverpool John Moores University. Formerly she held the position of Director of Nursing and Allied Health at LJMU having relocated from Dublin City University where she held the post of Director of Academic Practice for several years. Raphaela has a clinical background specialising in Accident and Emergency nursing in both the UK and Ireland. Professor Kane enjoyed extensive clinical and senior management career in the NHS.

Growth Platform talks to Dr Liz Bishop, Chief Executive of The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and joined the Trust on 26 November 2018.

Prior to this, Liz was the Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London, where she worked for eight years.

She started her career as a cancer nurse by background, Liz has also held a number of clinical and managerial positions over the years, including Nurse Consultant, Head of Nursing and General Manager for Oncology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Liz joined the Trust at an exciting time with one of its biggest milestones in its 60 year history – expanding services and building a new state-of-the-art cancer centre in the City of Liverpool. Now open, we are here today to talk to Liz about this exciting journey.

Growth Platform talks to Dr Phil Carvil who heads up the HealthTec Cluster in the North of England based at Sci-Tech Daresbury Campus.

Before taking up his role for STFC, Phil worked for 4 years at King’s Health Partners in London working across their 22 clinical-academic groups to support alignment with the partnerships tripartite mission through strategic analytical support.

A researcher, his PhD research was funded by the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Networking Partnership at King’s College London. The research supported the technical evaluation of the SkinSuit for ESA by conducting numerous studies and R&D on the suit which was designed to provide axial loading to support astronauts in space and reduce the risk of spinal issues post flight. This has subsequently been used in space on two occasions so far.

His passions for research and collaboration both nationally and internationally, led him to be elected to the management committee of the European Low Gravity Research association as Vice President. And for the last five years has supported the co-running of a gravity related summer school with ESA.

He is also the head of the executive committee of the UK Space Life and Biomedical Science Association.

Peter joined pharmaceutical industry in R&D laboratories - over 37 years experience for E.R. Squibb/Bristol-Myers Squibb, Moreton, Merseyside and headed up large R&D group across two geographies and UK R&D site.  

His has technical and innovative ability demonstrated in over 120 peer-reviewed publications, over 30 patents, plus books and book chapters. Expertise in orally dosed formulations, and specific knowledge in slow-release product and making highly insoluble biologically active compounds work effectively as medicines.
