The Chindits - Gurkhas in Burma
In late 1941, Imperial Japan attack U.S. and British Commonwealth forces across East Asia. Malaya and much of Burma had fallen by April 1942.
In response, Colonel Charles Orde Wingate's unconventional approach is seen as the best choice to lead guerrilla forces in Burma. Nicknamed The Chindits, the grit and determination of this battle unit means it is remembered as one of the fiercest in history.

The Assault on Hangman's Hill
On 20th March 1944, Naik (Corporal) Dilbahadur Khattri and two Gurkha riflemen reached the walls of the Monte Cassino Monastery - the first Allied soldiers in four great battles to reach their objective. This painting by the artist Jason Askew graphically depicts the moment three days before, on 17th March 1944, when 1st Battalion 9th Gurkha Rifles (1/9 GR) captured Hangman’s Hill.
The Crossing of the Tigris River
In 1917, units of the 2nd Battalion of the 9th Gurkha Rifles were tasked with forcing a crossing of the Tigris River at Shumran in Mesopotamia as part of the Allied assault against Turkish forces. British troops had just relieved the beleaguered city of Kut and were keen to press their advantage on towards Baghdad.
Hear the story that inspired this fantastic painting by Lionel Edwards.
