What’s Inner Child Work?
In a nutshell, it’s having “big” or “adult” you hold space for “little” or “child” versions of you. These child versions are you at various ages when you experienced some form of wounding through trauma or unmet needs. Holding space can be simply acknowledging that the wounds exist. But as you do inner child work it can look a little more complex such as when you’re anticipating a potentially triggering scenario, letting your little girl / boy know that adult you has it handled and that little you can breathe easy and relax.

20. Resourcing
Resourcing
So much of what we need to heal trauma and overcome anxiety we already have access to. The key is to bring awareness to those internal and external resources. Internal example is one hand over our heart and one on our belly and bringing our awareness to our breathing. An external resource could be a hug from a friend or another person we trust. Stop a moment and consider all the resources you have available to you.

Bedtime Voices
You’re exhausted, you lay down and then you’re wide awake. Try this … record yourself reading a positive mindset book. Play the recording on a super low volume while you are going to sleep. The idea is that you will drown out your mind’s negative, anxiety provoking thoughts with the positive words.

Self Sabotage & Shoulds
Feel like you “should” be doing or not doing certain things but just can’t get yourself to feel motivated to make the shift? Think back a bit … was there times you were “should-ed”? You should do this, you shouldn’t do that? Self-sabotage can be a form of unconscious rebellion when you have lived your life based on what everyone or certain people expected of you. What are some healthier ways that you can express your independence? Once those are in place you’ll feel more motivated to do the other “shoulds” that you are wanting to do.

17. Suppression Depression
Suppression Depression
Depression can have various causes. One common cause that is often overlooked is suppressing your thoughts and feelings. When you suppress anything that should be flowing from your body, you will end up with illness and/or blockages. When our feelings are allowed to be expressed and displayed, they flow out and we can move on. Think of how you may feel tired but relieved when you have a good cry. When you choose, consciously or not to bottle up your thoughts and your feelings, they become trapped and fester into something worse. Doing so continuously over time can lead to depression.

Seasonal Affect Disorder SAD
Is a funk some people experience when the summer season ends and we move into late fall or early winter. It can last days, weeks, or even months if untreated. Here’s a few quick tips to try:
- Spend 5 or more minutes doing light yoga or exercise in the morning
- Add cumin, coriander, and/ or cinnamon to your food
- Use a light box at least 5-10 minutes each day
- Journal your gratitudes

15. Forcing Yourself
Forcing Yourself
Do you wonder why you’re making such slow progress in personal growth or a certain area of self-development? Are you listening to all the podcasts & reading piles of self-help books yet are still not where you feel you should be? The problem could be that you’re forcing yourself to change at a pace that you aren’t ready for or won’t create lasting changes. Take a moment to step back from all the “work” Our brains need some free flow time to process input received. Think of a drain that you keep dumping bucket after bucket of water into. It starts flowing back up because the pipe can only handle so much at once. Go do something fun and inspirational. Let yourself enjoy an outing. You will make more progress when you aren’t constantly trying to make progress!

14. Sabotaging Self Care
Sabotaging Self Care
You decided on a morning or bedtime routine that you just know is going to propel you in the right direction in your personal life and your goals. Then, every day you’re disappointed in yourself because you didn’t do any of it? Perhaps it’s not about motivation or willpower at all. Are you feeding your soul with spending time with your tribe? Wait what? Typically self care practices are done in isolation … meditation, abhyanga, journaling … If you are constantly spending your non-work time alone, your subconscious will often rebel against creating habits that equal more alone time. Start squeezing in 1-2 times per week when you spend quality time with a friend or potential friend. You may then feel more inspired to start or expand your self care routines.

I had the honor of interviewing Kim Peek who is not only a holistic running coach but also a breast cancer survivor. You will hear her creative support for runners but more prevalently her resilience, positivity, and desire to support women regardless of the journey they are on or the challenges that they face!
Kim discusses a method of photo journaling that she used during her breast cancer treatments; how “a race is just a fleeting moment in time,” that what leads up to the race is most important in terms of growth and transformation;
Kim is a running coach, podcaster and author of Responsive Endurance Training: The Integrated Approach to Thriving as an Athlete. As I mentioned above she is also a 5 year breast cancer survivor and she ran all the way through treatment, celebrating with a half marathon at the end of chemo. She is excited to share her story with all of us.
