Episode #33 Matt Lourdeau

Episode #33 Matt Lourdeau

Guy talks to Matt Lourdeau about Brooke trout, Tiger trout and Smallmouth bass in his area as well as his very successful podcast "Cast Across" on Waypoint TV.

About Matt Lourdeau -

My first fish was an Illinois canal bluegill, and my first fish on the fly was a Yellow Breeches brown trout. Although the bluegill piqued my interest in nature and outdoor activities, that brown trout was a catalyst that was to be measured a lot larger than its own twelve inches.

Growing up in Northern Virginia, the trout and bass of that commonwealth, Maryland, and Pennsylvania were where I spent Saturdays and school holidays. After college, I relocated to Pennsylvania to live on some of the best spring creeks in the east (and, as I told everyone, to go to graduate school). I’ve worked for a big fly fishing company, sold rods for a small dealer, done private instruction, and served as director of the premier conservation youth camp in the country.

But it most definitely isn’t just fly fishing. I’m married to a wonderful woman who happens to be my high school sweetheart. She’s awfully patient and tolerant of most of my angling pursuits. I have four amazing boys, and all  love to be outdoors and have shown an interest in things that swim and squirm.

I love my family, fishing, barbeque, civil war history, music, football, and, most of all, Jesus Christ.

I’ve always written, and for years thought about organizing the coherent bits into a website. It’s happened, and I look forward to where it goes.

-Matthew

Episode #31 Bernard Yin

Episode #31 Bernard Yin

Bernard Yin celebrates the struggle between diverse interests. Fly Fishing, Music, Surfing and the great outdoors.

Let's start with the fishing: Bernard had a great mentor: Andre Puyans of Northern California's legendary Creative Sports Fly Shop. Decades later he worked at the Fishermens Spot in Van Nuys, CA; reuniting with one of his Creative Sports cohorts Ken Lindsay. Then, later, while taking a break from rock and roll, Bernard guided in the Yosemite and Kings Canyon region. All of this surrounding an ongoing fascination with struggling So Cal trout populations. Recently, to satisfy his need to "do good deeds for fish", Bernard has been taking drone footage of California waters to assist CalTrout's dam removal agenda. Top it off, he and his wife Rebecca were recruited as Ambassadors for CalTrout and did a social media takeover with images from So Cal's delicate wild trout waters in both times of good and bad.

Got Music? Bernard's history in bands and other musical projects spans over 30 years and in his own words is "too exhausting to recount so let's focus on the present ok?". The group Bernard currently shares with his wife Rebecca, PAR AVION, was recently part of the rollout of the documentary: Birth Of Endless Summer - a documentary about the inspiration behind the original iconic Bruce Brown film and surfing pioneer Dick Metz. PAR AVION is a surf influenced band and performs mostly in Southern California but has toured also ventured to such places as Mexico, France, Italy, and Puerto Rico. During the pandemic, they shifted focus to recording for film and tv licensing although now, live gigs are increasing rapidly. They are proud of their diverse supporters and as a result have found themselves performing at everything from the Lightning in a Bottle festival to the Tiki Oasis festival to, yep, Fly Fishing events such as the California Fly Fishing Open on the Kern River.

Episode #27 Tom Rowland

Episode #27 Tom Rowland

Capt Tom Rowland is a fishing guide in both fresh and saltwater turned entrepreneur.  Becoming a flyfishing guide in Jackson Hole, WY was a dream come true but finding great success in Key West, FL was even more of an unlikely success story.  At first simply guiding anglers to their best catches was what drove Tom to obsession but upon entering his first ever fishing tournament, he saw that he missed competition in his life.  After that first tournament, Tom went on to compete in every tournament he could find including ones that featured an international field.  From Florida Keys Charity tournaments like the Redbone to professional Redfish tournaments to freshwater fly fishing tournaments, Tom has competed in and won tournaments of all kinds both as an angler and as a guide.

No one could have predicted what came next as Tom and his partner started a production company, created, starred in, sold and distributed a television show on ESPN and OLN Networks only to replicate this popular format 2 additional times in offshore fishing and freshwater Bass Fishing.  They did this with no formal education about television of business.  It happened out of sheer determination, hard work, and hustle. That original show is known as Saltwater Experience and it has been on the air for 17 years.  The second show was Into the Blue (14 years) and the third is Sweetwater (11 years).  Along the way, there was another show called Fitness Truth which aired for 2 years and covered the very early years of the then underground fitness movement of CrossFit.

Out of necessity due to declining television ratings and cord-cutters, Tom and his partner Rich Tudor then created a digital network called Waypoint TV to take the outdoor television landscape to digital OTT platforms.  Again, Waypoint was built on the hustle and hard work rather than outside capital, high profile contacts, and formal education.

Most recently, he has become a podcaster and creates inspiring and educational content for his loyal audience that includes interviews with entrepreneurs from all industries, fishing and hunting icons as well as, "how-to" advice.  Tom credits much of his success to his dedication to his physical condition and keeps physical education as a foundational part of his message.  At this point, it may go without saying that he knew nothing about podcasting either.  More hard work, mistakes, and determination led to the growth of this property as well.  The Tom Rowland Podcast has been downloaded more than 1 million times and is growing more rapidly than anything else.

Simon learnt to fish at the age of 6 and took up fly fishing when aged 8, being trained by his father - well-known fly-fishing instructor and author, John Gawesworth. By the time he left school at 16 to teach fly fishing Simon had become the British Junior casting champion, repeating the feat the next year. In January 2001 Simon and his wife moved to the United States to start working for a new fly line company called RIO Products, based out of Idaho Falls, ID. Episode #15 Evan Moore - Extreme Kayaker / Business Owner / World Traveler

Episode #15 Evan Moore - Extreme Kayaker / Business Owner / World Traveler

The 26-year-old Californian began kayaking at age 6, ran his first class V rapid at age nine, and was a known name in the California kayaking scene by the time he hit high school. Being the son of Tom Moore – owner of Sierra South Paddle Sports in Kernville, California, Evan grew up on the banks of the Kern River and was part of the whitewater scene practically from birth.

Growing up, kayaking wasn’t his only passion. Evan was a very accomplished high school football Quarterback which led him to Sacramento to play football at one of the top Junior Colleges in the country. Although he was extremely dedicated to football, something was missing in his life - whitewater kayaking. After a long hard decision, Evan walked away from football to pursue kayaking and has not looked back since. He’s been to eight different countries in the last year chasing the biggest and hardest whitewater the planet has to offer.

“I’ve set both local and global goals for myself as a kayaker. I want to become the first person to run every inch of whitewater on the Kern River, and I want to find new whitewater in all corners of the Earth. Doing that requires great gear like Kokatat makes. It’s an honor to be on Team Kokatat and representing the company.”

Evan’s philosophy in life is to ‘pursue what your heart tells you to do, and not let outside influences stop you from achieving your dreams’.
