Reversing Alzheimer's & Dementia in Women - Dr. Dale Bredesen
Today’s guest is Dr. Dale Bredesen - an expert in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease. He wrote a groundbreaking book and New York Times bestseller that you probably have already heard of : The End of Alzheimer's (2017) and then several years later wrote a follow up book: The End of Alzheimer's Program (2020). And just several weeks ago he published a new book called “The First Survivors of Alzheimer's: How Patients Recovered Life and Hope in Their Own Words”. This is a great book to hear first hand real stories of people who have reversed their Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Dr. Bredesen is a professor at UCLA, but he has also taught at UC San Francisco and the University of California San Diego. He directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before coming to the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in 1998 as its founding president and CEO. Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative condition where we have a progressive decline in cognitive function, like thinking and reasoning. People with Alzheimer’s are eventually unable to do any activities of daily living, simple things like bathing, driving and dressing. It’s the most common form of dementia in people over the age of 65; about one in 10 people over 65 has Alzheimer’s disease, but if you’re a woman, your risk is 1 in 5. Nearly half of all people over age 85 are affected by Alzheimer’s. That’s 50%! What’s crazy is that almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer's are women. So we explore why this is with Dr. Bredesen today and what we can do to lower our risk. Most doctors and experts in this field say there is no cure for Alzheimer’s. But Dr. Bredesen blatantly says that Alzheimer’s is absolutely 100% reversible and preventable. He is going against the grain with his research, which he has been working on for decades. He’s been consulting patients and getting results with his ReCODE protocol, while traditional treatments haven’t. Adrenaline Dominance & Bioidentical Hormones - Dr. Michael Platt
Dr. Michael Platt clears the confusion on bioidentical hormones and what this can mean for women going into menopause. We also talk about adrenaline dominance. Ageism, Discrimination & Prejudice on Older Adults - Dr. Paul Nash
Gerontologist Dr. Paul Nash explains the latest research and the truth on ageism, discrimination and stereotypes experienced by older adults around the world. He exposes the challenges as well as opportunities an older population may face throughout the years.  Now let me introduce my favorite professor…Dr. Paul Nash from the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology where I am currently studying for my Masters of Gerontology. I am halfway through this program and honestly, the course I took on the Mind Body Connection with Dr. Nash was THE most fascinating and practical for me yet. Today we are going to discuss the topics from his book “Critical Questions for Ageing Societies” such as ageism, intersectionality, intergenerational conflict and the discrimination and prejudices against older adults. And we get to learn why positive attitudes to aging may help us live up to 7 years longer! Originally from the UK, Dr. Nash has a PhD in psychology and for the past 3 years is an instructional associate professor at USC. Before he came to USC, he ran the Masters of Science in Ageing Studies program at Swansea University and taught masters and PhD students. Swansea University is famous for their Centre for Innovative Ageing (CIA), which is THE largest gerontology research centre in Wales and one of the largest in the UK. Dr Nash has coordinated national research projects in Wales, working with private and public organizations and older people to create publications and reports to influence government policy. He has held several leadership positions in the UK including being the Honorary Secretary for the British Society of Gerontology and working with the World Health Organization on ageism. He has been appointed to the Global Social Initiatives on Ageing taskforce for the International Association of Gerontology & Geriatrics. He is partnering with several non-profit organizations on his research into HIV and ageing as well as ageism and intergenerational contact. Aging Brain Hacks with Creative Arts - Maria Ashna
Maria Ashna is a neuroscience researcher, educator, actor and writer specializing in the neuroscience of creativity. She guides us through the science of creativity and how it can hack cognitive dysfunction and dementia as well as improve our mental capabilities. Maria has a Master’s degree in Neuroimaging and Informatics from the University of Southern California (USC) and a Master’s in Information Systems and Technology. She studied neuroscience and theatre for her undergraduate degree and also trained at the Stanislavski Summer Institute, a joint advanced theatre training program with the American Rep Theatre at Harvard University and the Moscow Art Theatre School. Maria has worked in both research and tech, and she is currently an Instructor at USC. I recently met Maria during my Masters program in Gerontology at USC and was very impressed by her knowledge of the brain, but also her completely contrary background in art. But there is a lot that is complementary between the arts and the brain that Maria shares with us. Hacking 77 In a 20 Year Old Body - Iris Davis
Iris Davis was born in Ireland 7 decades ago to a poor family. She has endured death, abuse, depression and struggle most of her life, but has  overcome all odds with resilience and strength winning first place at NPC bodybuilding shows in the past 20 years. Some of her most notable accomplishments include an unofficial leg press record at 420kg (926lbs) and the title of fittest female in the US in 2006 Iris did her first bodybuilding show when she was 50, going up against younger male bodybuilders and coming in second. She is also a world record holder of 21 pull ups. I love this quote I found. She said, " Its so easy to be fit at 25,+ but to remain fit and healthy for 52 years, that is some achievement indeed" Iris is currently a personal trainer, in a gym she opened when she was 75 and has over 45 years of experience. And her videos have produced over 10 million views. How many trainers can say that?!
