27. Chronic Health Issues, Financial Freedom + Mind-Body Connection to Disease with Debbie Emick
Searching for health, Debbie Emick wrote the book, The Other Side of Perfect. Coming out in Feb 2020.
Debbie Emick is a survivor of multiple chronic illnesses/autoimmune diseases that took the long road to learn her path to healing was through accessing the mind-body connection to disease and health. Through addressing and releasing repressed emotions and past trauma, she’s been able to experience a life of greater health, ease, and fulfillment by living out my authentic purpose. She has a unique, first-hand perspective in discussing:
- The trauma and perceived helplessness of diagnoses of rare and serious diseases with poor prognosis.
- Trial and error navigating the more superficial aspects of healing--advice from medical experts, pharmaceutical interventions, etc.
- Coming to a more holistic approach toward healing (nutrition, exercise, etc.) that finally led to an internal search for mental/emotional health (meditation, energy/somatic work, calming my nervous system, etc.), ultimately creating less physical illness and pain.
- Learning to move beyond the coping mechanisms and personality traits (like perfectionism and people-pleasing) she’d attached to for survival that no longer served me or my health.
- Living a less fearful life from a place of power that allows me to create the life she desires today, regardless of diagnoses, because none of us have a guarantee of tomorrow

So I dealt with Imposter Syndrome my entire time there, and even after Yale. And so, I have worked through a lot of that, and because I know what it feels like to actually live through that, I think that's why I'm able to coach people cause I understand how people feel cause I've had that lived experience."

21. Maximize the ROI of your Life - Expert Tips To Uncover What's Holding You Back
Today, I want to walk you through my top tips for uncovering what’s really holding you back. I’m going to teach you how to create a personal feedback loop, so you can optimize your success to attain the results you’re truly after.
My favorite way to describe life is as one big experiment. None of us are born knowing what will make us successful or what we need to do to grow as human beings. Rather, we live life by trial and error. We hypothesize what will get us the best results, then execute and learn from our performance.
This is where the concept of a feedback loop comes in. A feedback loop is a process in which the outputs of a system are funneled back and used as inputs. Since the dawn of time, creatures have used feedback loops to maintain homeostasis and thrive. Positive feedback, such as finding the fruits of your labor, will amplify the feedback loop so change occurs more quickly.
We use the same concept of feedback loops in marketing and web design. Here, a feedback loop refers to the process of harnessing customer or employee feedback — the output of the business — to create an improved product or service.
Throughout my work in web design and optimization, I consistently use a feedback loop to help entrepreneurs perform successfully. Inputs like client reviews or how the site ranks on search engines like Google inform my next move. Now, I’ve learned to use the same feedback loop process to gain momentum — so I can be laser-focused and reach goals faster.
How Do You Control Your Inputs for Growth?
How Do You Maximize Your Output for Success?
To achieve compound growth, your feedback loop should be rich in return-on-investment (ROI) focused outputs, such as content creation, client work, and most importantly, journaling. Journaling goes hand-in-hand with positive self-dialogue — it’s a chance to write growth and success into fruition.
However, there’s a ton more to my journaling process than simply willing success into existence. Each day, I break down my desires into three pillars of success: intrinsic, extrinsic, and foundational goals I can actively work towards.
Intrinsic Goals are personally rewarding, like receiving accolades from a boss.
Extrinsic Goals are professionally or socially rewarding, like receiving a raise.
Foundational Goals are what keep my mind and body strong, like working on my health and wellness.
Each morning, I write out at least one goal for each pillar to accomplish throughout the day. Each night, I finish my day with a final journal entry. This is my time to clear my mind, detail what I’ve learned, and plan how I will live better tomorrow. Plus, I can take note of which goals I was able to make headway on.
Find the Culprit Halting Your Success
Locate and Eliminate Roadblocks to Success Today
In life, the quicker you’re able to learn more about yourself and apply purposeful intent directly to your goals, the quicker you will accelerate your results. The feedback loop I’ve outlined will help you channel your energy into the right places, so you can begin optimizing for success.
If you’re curious about how I harness the power of journaling and personal feedback, be sure to check out my free Growth Playbook — it’s packed with helpful insights to get you started.

18. Failure and Success from Skateboard Lifestyle - Life Lessons to Fail and Succeed
Everything I’ve learned about growth and success I’ve learned from skateboarding. That’s right, skateboarding.
Who would have thought my number one passion when I was just 13-years-old would make such a profound impact on my life?
Well, my mom might’ve had a clue. She must have known I was totally hooked when I skipped school to skate at the mall in elementary school. I was suspended (and kicked out of the gifted program), but my time spent in the principal’s office that day is permanently ingrained in my memory.
That moment was a testament to how much skating meant to me. I can still remember my first board vividly — a Fred Smith Punk Size, a true OG. In fact, I remember all of my early decks, and I rode them as they were meant to be ridden: with rails, tail covers, nose guards, and slime balls.
You see, skating in the late 80s and 90s wasn’t just a fun after-school activity (or during school, in my case). It was an entire lifestyle. From Steve Caballero and the Bones Brigade to watching “The Search for Animal Chin” and idolizing Tony Hawk, I was neck-deep in skateboarding culture and wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Today, I can say with full confidence that everything I’ve learned about success, growth, and particularly failure, was learned through a lifetime of skateboarding.
Today I cover:
- Life Lesson #1: Never Be Deterred by Failure
- Life Lesson #2: Abide by Trial and Error
- Life Lesson #3: Explore Alternate Creative Ventures
- Life Lesson #4: Break Out of Your Comfort Zone
- Life Lesson #5: Learn Your Momentum
While I still love to skate, I’m the first to admit I’m not as adventurous on a board as I used to be — breaking a wrist at 40 is a lot more physically and financially time-consuming than it was a kid. But if you like skating, I urge you to reach out to me.
There’s a skate park right down the street and I’d love to connect with you. Until then, you can find me at alex@happyprogress.com or on the Happy Progress Podcast.

Yes, in many ways Dennis wanted to raise money and become a lot larger. Then Dennis discovered that may not be the right path for him. - Discuss the Intrapreneurs' Journey

You can test the waters with a safety net while having access to more resources and a larger platform. - Limiting Belief - Are You Worth Your Value?
Dennis was very reluctant to pay himself so his startup would grow. Even though his startup was growing and had the money was in the bank, Dennis was struggling and was always worried about paying his mortgage.

- What if your story was never meant to be unique What if you try and you fail? What if people don't like what you have to say?
- What if you lost everything? What if success if you someone else? What if you were meant to just pay bills and to sleep?
- What if you were a born follower? What if you were never going to find happiness?
- Or what if just CHANGE THE WAY YOU look at the world? What if today is just the beginning?
- What if you decide what you can be and you become it?
- What if impossible isn't fact, it is an opinion and you don't buy it.
- What is this new world, starts with you?
- What if I can be the one that people look up to?
- What if my past got me here, but has no effect on where I can go?

- What if 2nd place is no longer an option?
It's time to stop wasting your time trying to convince others because you are the only one that needs to be convinced.

2. Feedback is Key to Growing Fast
A super growth hack we all know about...
An entrepreneur the feedback loop is an important part of our process. To understand the feedback loop, think about how quickly you can get feedback, gather that insight, and turn it into actionable efforts that are going to make progress in your ultimate goal. That's what happy progress is all about. It's about finding the simplest things that can help us drive the most success possible. This is not growth hacking or any quick cheat to level up your results. It's about doing the right things based on the previous failures you've had in the past.
Especially now with the Coronavirus COVID pandemic in 2020, now is the time to take advantage of the downtimes. In times like these, we can leverage the opportunities to create a second income or build on additional projects to create more meaningful and fulfilling work. For me, I want to spend my additional time outside of my main job creating art and designing new creative projects.
