Good Deeds in a Weary World

Good Deeds in a Weary World

The world can sometimes feel dark and weary—shrouded by nuances of fear, jealousy, and rage. Yet, like the moonshine on a world shrouded in darkness, even the smallest of deeds done with love in our heart can become a beaconing light to guide our way.

In this episode, you’ll hear a story about how following in the footsteps of loving kindness can shield us from the “winter’s rage” of a seemingly dark and weary world.

Where One Thing Ends (and another begins)

When we fail to see the beauty around us, perhaps it’s not so much that we lack the capacity to recognize and understand beauty in our world—perhaps this beauty simply lacks the frame that provides a contextual boundary. We pass it by, because it doesn’t appear relevant to us.

Check out this brief article to hear fascinating stories on the importance of boundaries.

No one likes to be wrong—and people especially don’t like to be perceived as wrong by others. But in our search for certainty, we would do well to calibrate our certainty to actual knowledge and skills, rather than mere wishful thinking.

What Are You Sitting on the Shore Of?

What Are You Sitting on the Shore Of?

Just as a sports team doesn’t take the field alone, so too can we benefit from worthy coaches, guides, and mentors  who know the way, go the way, and show the way. After all, the players on the field are too close to the field to see the bigger picture, which is where the true value of a coach is found—providing a mirror to reflect back what they are not able to see themselves.

This episode shares the story of how I first learned of the value of mentorship and the impact it had on my life and career. Enjoy!

The Sailing Opossum

The Sailing Opossum

We will never be held responsible for what we are not capable of handling—or at the very least capable of learning. As such, responsibility doesn’t preclude risk; rather, it calls us to understand our strengths, know what’s negotiable, and then boldly step forward to learn and grow, come what may.

This episode shares the fascinating story of a family that took on the responsibility of caring for a life in need—and in so doing, fostered what may be the world's only sailing opossum. Enjoy!

Name It to Tame It

Name It to Tame It

Many people seem to suffer from eisoptrophobia—the fear of seeing one’s own reflection. When this happen, they fail to see what’s right in front of them because they don’t like what’s staring back at them. And so, to avoid the discomfort, they simply avert their eyes from the clutter of their lives. The psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel, however, suggests that to make positive change in our lives, we have to "name it to tame it."

This episode shares the story of how one man tamed the streets of West Sussex and how you can use this same process to perhaps one day have a garbage truck named after you. Enjoy!

How does what you do reflect who you are?

How does what you do reflect who you are?

It’s been said that “if a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live,” and if this is true then Harry Chapin was certainly a man fit to live—becoming a change-maker—looking...seeing a need—and with compassion taking action to do something about it. Hanlon’s Razor

The physicist Marie Curie reminds us, “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.”

With a little more understanding, we can perhaps come to find there is far less malice in our world than we might at first assume, and discover instead that there is simply far more ignorance, apathy, and poor judgment.

Check out this brief article to hear recent tragic stories written by our society along with a way to overcome and prevent these stories from repeating themselves.

Being Well By Living Well

Being Well By Living Well

It’s not enough to have accurate information—to initiate and manage positive change we also have to be able to access and use the information. By making positive psychology research accessible—digestible, memorable, and manageable—it brings the research to life, out of the reports, scientific journals, and books and into the lives of people who can actually use and benefit from the material.

All done in love

All done in love

The time for loving servitude is certainly now, as three poisons continue to threaten humanity: apathy, hatred, and violence.

Of the three, perhaps the most preferable is hatred—because at least it provides a level of consideration unavailable to the apathetic. Yet the danger of hatred can be a slippery slope to violence.

Check out this article for an actionable idea that can serve as an antidote to these three poisons.
