A Haunted History Of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts
Joining me today are the authors behind the book 'A Haunted History Of Invisible Women: True Stories of America's Ghosts' a book which explores sorrowful widows, vengeful jezebels, innocent maidens, wronged lovers, former slaves, even the occasional axe-murderess - America's female ghosts differ widely in background, class, and circumstance. Yet one thing unites them: their ability to instill fascination and fear, long after their deaths. A Haunted History of Invisible Women offers a unique lens on the significant role these ghostly legends play both within the spook-sseeking corners of our minds and in the consciousness of a nation. Fairies: A Dangerous History with Richard Sugg
On September 1st 1922 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published his book, The Coming of the Fairies. With this important anniversary month we are going to be looking at the Cottingley Fairies as well as examining the history of fairy folklore and the changes they have undergone both in terms of aesthetic and perception to explore their darker and more dangerous side.... How dangerous were fairies? In the late seventeenth century, they could still scare people to death. Little wonder, as they were thought to be descended from fallen angels, and to have the power to destroy the world itself. Such beliefs, along with some remarkably detailed sightings, lingered on well into the twentieth century. In today's episode I am joined by Dr Richard Sugg who wrote the book, 'Fairies: A Dangerous History' as we examine the associations fairies had with witchcraft and black magic, the dead and with ghosts and poltergeists.  Thank you for listening. The History and Hauntings of Derby Gaol with Richard Felix
Derby has a reputation for being a hotbed of ghostly goings on. Stories of ghostly activities span generations. In fact it’’s difficult to turn a corner in the city without hearing a nerve jangling tale of things that go bump in the night. And you don’t have to go too far to find one such tale. The old gaol in Friar Gate has a particularly gruesome past. Today, all that survives of the original gaol are its cells, which now form part of a working museum which tells the story of its grisly history. Opened in 1756 it replaced one in the Cornmarket and materials from that building were actually used in the construction of the Friar Gate Gaol, which was deliberately sited close to Nun's Green, a place where executions had traditionally taken place. Many a brutal execution took place in the prison, and many others died by other means such as illness and suicide.  Joining me today to discuss the history and hauntings of Derby Gaol is TV paranormal historian Richard Felix- the owner of Derby Gaol.  Thank you for listening. The Grey Ghost- The Haunting History of the Queen Mary
Internationally recognised, the historic floating hotel and museum attracts thousands of visitors every year. It has also attracted a number of unearthly guests over the years. In fact, some say the Queen Mary is one of the most haunted places in the world with as many as 150 known spirits lurking upon the ship. Over the past 60 years, the Queen Mary has been the site of at least 49 reported deaths, not to mention having gone through the terrors of war, so it comes as no surprise that spectral spirits of her vivid past continue to walk within her rooms and hallways. In today's episode we explore some of the history, the grandiosity and the ghostly tales that lurk on this magnificent and historic Grey Ghost. Thank you for listening. Ghosts of Scotland- Tales Deep From Within Castle Walls
A variety of ghosts are to be found in the houses, castle, inns, moors, lochs and ruins of Haunted Scotland. Scotland has always been a divided nation and its history is spattered with the blood of countless conflicts. Vestiges of Scotland's stormy past are to be found all over the country and nowhere is it more apparent than in the haunted, ruined castles of Scotland. These ruined fortresses - silent reminders of old and bitter conflicts - stud the Scottish landscape. From the gentle farmlands of the Central Lowlands to wild Empty lands of Europe's last great wilderness in the country's Northwest, Scotland's abandoned castles stand as sullen witnesses to centuries of conflict and bloodshed, and the ghosts that wander their timeworn corridors and historic rooms are perpetual reminders of a violent and stormy past. Behind the sombre walls of these impressive bastions, Kings and Queens, Lairds and Ladies, Highlanders and Lowlanders, the famous and the long forgotten, continue to inhabit an ethereal domain where old feuds and differences have never died, and where dastardly deeds and ancient discords occasionally cross the centuries to baffle and astonish those who happen to stumble upon their ghostly re-enactments. Everywhere through history you can see the scars of witch trials. The Empty Chair
Roy Jenkins concludes in his biography of Sir Winston Churchill that: .....Churchill, with all his idiosyncracies, his indulgences, his occasional childishness, but also his genius, his tenacity and his persistent ability (to be) larger than life, was the greatest ever occupant of 10 Downing Street. Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Churchill remains popular in the UK and Western world, where he is seen as a victorious wartime leader. Winston Churchill was more than this though he was a man of transcendental powers. He could, it seems, peer beyond reality. While vague about the hereafter, Churchill always held that “man is spirit,” and believed in a kind of spiritual connection with his forebears. On 24 January 1953, he told his private secretary, John Colville, that he would die on that date—the same date his father had died in 1895. Twelve years later Churchill lapsed into a coma on January 10th. Confidently, Colville assured The Queen’s private secretary: “He won’t die until the 24th.” Unconscious, Churchill did just that. In this episode we explore locations associated with Churchill as well as Churchill the man and his links with the supernatural.  Thank you for listening. Off With Her Head- The Nine Day Queen
In today’s episode we explore the story of a young girl caught up in the political conflicts of her time. It would see her rise to the highest echelon of Queen (a position she held for nine days.)  Lady Jane Grey would lose everything.... including her head.  In the moments before her death she would be handed her prayer book in which she wrote the following: “Live still to die, that by death you may purchase eternal life...” Lady Jane Grey’s story, and death, is a hauntingly tragic one- one that those in power would try and erase from history. Jane’s legacy and ghostly spirit however would not be so easily forgotten.  Thank you for listening. Ghosts of The Future Yet To Come
And so we reach the last strike of the clock, as we enter the Witching Hour.  In A Christmas Carol the Ghost of Christmas Future is introduced as an ominous and silent figure, "...a solemn Phantom, draped and hooded, coming, like a mist along the ground, towards him... Scrooge feared the silent shape so much that his legs trembled beneath him, and he found that he could hardly stand when he prepared to follow it." Our final visit shares the ominous and haunting tale of William Stead and his own brushes with ghosts from his future. Thank you for listening. The Ghosts of Winter Past
The events of the past are but shadows. In Charles Dicken's creation A Christmas Carol The Ghost of Christmas Past is a strange, otherworldly creature which shimmers and flickers like a candlelight- in it's hand the Ghost holds a branch of holly to symbolise winter.  On this winter night, on the eve before Christmas, we visit Ghosts of the Past connected with Christmas time. Dim your lights and settle by the fire and let these visions draw you in to the shadows of the past. Don't Turn Out The Lights
What is it about lighthouses that seem to make them ideal settings for residual hauntings? Perhaps it is the age of many of these magnificent structures- perhaps it is the isolation of the lighthouse keepers themselves who would often be cut off from other people for weeks or months at a time to keep that light burning. A job filled with countless dangers. Perhaps this lonely solitude leaves a shadowy imprint of their lives within the stone and mortar of these wind and wave swept beacons of light in the darkness. In today’s episode we cast our own light on the dark tales that often lurk in these forgotten, isolated and lonely landmarks and keepers who throughout history kept the lights burning in the shadows. The Feminine Macabre- an interview with Amy Bennett and Chris Amandier
Joining me today to talk about their pieces in The Feminine Macabre I and II are Amy Bennett from Full Dark Paranormal and Chris Amandier from Buried Secrets Podcast. We are going to be looking a little closer at their pieces centered on Ouijamania from the 1920s, Hell's Gate, colourful female ghosts and asylums and exploring them from some different angles and topic points.  These pieces threw up a range of fascinating questions and insights linked to their macabre writings and I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed participating in this discussion with my guests.  As of recording the podcast Volume II had not been released but has subsequently been published and can now be enjoyed alongside Volume I. You can purchase these through Amazon or via Amanda Woomer's website https://spookeats.com/femininemacabre/ If you haven't yet dipped your toe into these journals to see some of the amazing body of research and information then I highly recommend. I have thoroughly enjoyed devouring both volumes and I am sure you will too. Congratulations, and well done, to all the contributors of these volumes. Thank you Amanda for giving a place for these essays to have a voice and platform. Thank you for listening. Warwick
In today's podcast you will have the chance to explore the history and paranormal activity surrounding a castle with over 1000 years of heritage, intrigue, murder, torture, ambitions, plots and so much more.  It was here that many key English Kings and ambitious men of the court like The Kingmaker would reside.  Within the walls of the castle we explore the Victorian Seances carried out by Anne Greville, the Countess of Warwick and the stories of hauntings that this castle is reported to have. With its rich history, Warwick Castle is the location of many ghostly legends one of which is centred around Sir Fulke Greville a poet and playwright who was a rich and influential man. He would be murdered by his manservant and die agonisingly from his wounds a month later. His spirit is said to walk The Ghost Tower and stare from dark corners. Many feel his presence at the place where he once composed such prophetic lines as: If nature did not take delight in blood, She would have made more easy ways to good. So let's dive into the delights that this location has to share..... Thank you for listening. The Mysteries of Tettenhall Towers
Tettenhall Towers was first built as a country house in 1771 before being turned into the school that it is today. This large country home was the residence of some intriguing and 'interesting' characters- figures we will be exploring in this podcast as many believe that they are still connected to the school today.  Like the men who helped to build this house Tettenhall Towers is equally as mysterious. The Towers for many has a frightening reputation and one with many areas where people have refused to enter. This is a building composed of dark repressive corridors and spooky stairways leading to a maze of rooms and attics and cellars- ones that we will journey through in this podcast to explore the history, the intrigue and the hauntings associated with this school. The Jamaica Inn- Hauntings, History and Folklore
The Jamaica Inn has long provided travellers with a resting place and ales.  It is also a location long associated with smugglers and wreckers- people who would purposefully lure unsuspecting ships out at sea on to the awaiting rocks. These ships would then be looted and stripped of all cargo. The Jamaica Inn provided a perfect location to hide these goods- isolated as it is on the moor. A light would be placed in a small square window to provide the all clear for nearby smugglers waiting out on the misty moors. Joining me today are Karin and Colin who make up part of the Jamaica Inn Paranormal Team. The team have had the unique experience of being the site team investigating the history, hauntings and folklore associated with this remarkable location made famous by the book 'The Jamaica Inn' written by Daphne du Maurier.  The inn though offers far more than the book and the tales of smugglers that it has to offer... something that today's guests will be giving us a unique glipse of from some of their many investigations and the wealth of research that they undertake.  Light your candles and join us in discovering some of the mysteries of this inn.... The Haunting History of Shrewsbury Prison
Shrewsbury Prison that we see today was built in 1877 having been built to replace an earlier Georgian prison dating back to 1791 on the same grounds. This prison was finally closed in 2013 having seen countless executions during this time.  Shrewbury Prison, or 'The Dana' as it is also known, has a harrowing history and is a location with a vast array of different areas to explore. There is much reported paranormal activity here. Why not listen for yourself and decide if you think the energy of former inmates linger in the now empty cells and various prison rooms..... Home Away from Home Part 1: Haunting mysteries, tragic deaths & chilling beginnings of English pioneers in BC
This week join my guests Haunted History BC https://hauntedhistorybc.com as we take you back in time to BC’s early days to the 1800’s as we travel among the realms of prominent early pioneers from England who settled in British Columbia and made this their home.  In this episode we discover lurking shadows of a murder victim in a haunted Parliament building in Victoria, BC’s capital.  We’ll travel to BC’s oldest home in New Westminster where a river boat captain and his family were regarded as prominent citizens and we uncover an amazing find! Finally, we visit a beautifully eerie Victorian inn overlooking the capital city's inner harbour where the inhabitants were fraught with several unfortunate tragedies. For reasons of their own,  various ghosts continue to wander the corridors of these magnificent locations and we continue to tell their stories. This immense, abandoned former almshouse is a location with a lot of history and unique stories. It is also a location with a plethora of supernatural activity being reported some of which includes: doors slamming, footsteps, full body apparitions, shadow people, dismembered voices and ghostly touches.  Come and join us in discussing this unique location: it’s history and it’s ghostly stories.  Thank you for listening ❤️👻❤️👻 If you wish to support the Haunted History Chronicles Podcast then please click on the Patreon link. https://www.patreon.com/Haunted_History_Chronicles Please use the links below or on the website to keep in touch via our social media pages : to ask questions and review other content linked to this episode.
