#62 The Ways Betrayal Trauma Affects our Relationship with God, Priesthood Leaders, and Church Culture with Kim Day. Part 1 | Healing with WORTH
Do we have expectations of what life was supposed to look like?  Especially when faith was such a core component and is such a core component of our identity. Here in this episode, Worth therapist, Kim Day talks about how this type of trauma really hits our identity in so many different ways. She lists at least 3 major reasons that our faith or our relationship with God or our emotions around a church, can feel strange or even threatened. Of the 100 women who answered our survey, more than 63% felt they had gone through a significant spiritual crisis as part of their journey–usually pretty close around their time of discovery. -Lisa Taylor, pastoral sexual addiction specialist When something goes wrong, or is painful, in close association with the gospel or a gospel principle or ideal, those can become fused. They can become linked, not always, but sometimes they can.

Abuse Mini Series #10: What Are The Signs Of Sexual Abuse In A Relationship? | Healing with WORTH
Another re-release of some of our favorite episodes during this summer break with all of you. We will have new episodes for you in September!  We are back with clinicians Alana Gordon and Kimberly Day to discuss another aspect of abuse; Sexual Abuse.  Kim expresses that there is a difference between sexual impact caused by a spouse's addiction and unhealthy sexual behaviors versus sexual abuse.   We discuss how these two aspects can manifest in a relationship.  What is Sexual Abuse in a relationship?   What are the signs of sexual abuse and unhealthy sexuality in a relationship?   What impact can this have on our sexual relationship? Show Notes: You can find the episode Kim references on Healthy Sexuality (Mini Series #9) with Jeanne Vattuone here:  https://anchor.fm/healingwithworth/episodes/Healing-with-WORTH-Healthy-Sexuality-with-Jeanne-Vattuone-Mini-Series-on-Abuse-7-emak0u "Unhealthy sexuality is coercive or nonconsensual. And whenever you have that coercion or any degree of non-consent, that is unhealthy.  Non-consent absolutely is exploitive, it's abusive."

#46 How to Use Boundaries to Create Safety | Healing with WORTH
As we take a little summer break with all of you, we wanted to re-release some of our favorite episodes. We will have new episodes for you in September!  After our interview with Dr. Manning we wanted to further discuss the topic of creating safety through setting boundaries.   Living with a sex addict is risky behavior as they may be living a secret life unknown to us.   How do we create safety for ourselves?   We at times in our healing journey thought safety meant a physical safety, safety from harm, as well as having the physical necessities of life.  We need to take into consideration safety also means from verbal, emotional, and financial harm.   Assessing where our safety risks are, allows us to see where we need to create boundaries in our relationship.   Show Notes: A new round of WORTH YSA classes are starting May 4th.  We live in a world where pornography is pervasive.  If you wish you could prepare your daughter to be strong, empowered and have knowledge to have a healthy relationship this is the class for her!  Taught by Betrayal Trauma Coach Amie Woolsey.  Learn more about this class and register at https://lifechangingservices.online/worth/worth-ysa/

Is joy possible when going through betrayal trauma, a separation, or divorce?  In this second interview with author Noelle McBride she shares with us how becoming a "ruthless editor of her life" helped her find joy going through divorce.  Often as latter-day saint women, we struggle with wondering where we belong in the great plan of happiness if our lives are looking very different from how that plan is typically perscribed.  Noelle shares with us what things she needed to remove from her life, and changes she made to find that joy and happiness.   If you haven't listened to the first episode with Noelle make sure to go back and listen to Episode 58. #58: Beauty For Ashes, Divorce and The Latterday Saint Woman with Noelle McBride. Part 1 | Healing with WORTH
We had the privilege of interviewing Noelle McBride to discuss her new book Beauty for Ashes, Divorce and The Latter-day Saint Woman.  As she talks about her divorce you can hear some of the many internal struggles that Christian women go through, especially women of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, due to our understanding of the eternal nature of families and marriages. We are often hanging on to these marriages at great expense to our psychological and even physical wellbeing. Even while there may be a need to end the marriage, it is a very difficult process to work through. Over the next couple of episodes, we are going to talk about her book and discuss some of the internal struggles that Noelle went through and how this process of battling moves us into a refining process. #57: How betrayal trauma affects motherhood with KayLee C Dunn | Healing with WORTH
After betrayal there are many internal struggles that a mother faces as she tries to meet her own emotional needs and then balance those with the needs of her children.  In the hard moments we "should ourselves" or in other words give ourselves guilt trips about all the things we think we should be doing.  That can be pretty common with women in general, but then you throw the mom guilt in with betrayal trauma and it can heighten destructive unhealthy patterns.  We are so grateful for KayLee Dunn coming on the podcast to explain how betrayal trauma affects mothering and how to connect with our children and balance our own healing.  We love KayLee's honest and realistic approach to mothering while dealing with betrayal trauma.  We hope that you will feel validated and uplifted as we did talking with her! Kaylee is an EMDR therapist and she specializes in betrayal, trauma, and unwanted sexual behaviors. She provides tele-health therapy services to women and men in Utah and Arizona.  She also co facilitates a weekly live group discussion through her free Facebook community called Awake Resilience From Betrayal. Kaylee is also a mom to triplets who are seven and twins who are five years old.  Show Notes: Follow Kaylee on instagram @kayleecdunn and join her free private facebook community:  Awake Resilience From Betrayal

#56: Our Recovery. Part 3 of Hers, His and Our recovery | Healing with WORTH
In this last episode of Hers, His and Our recovery we felt like this particular topic was a little out of our scope.  And then we realized there are benchmarks that both of us are looking for to know if he is ready to take the next step of couples recovery with us. And so we're going to share with you some of those benchmarks that we are looking for to know that our relationship is ready to go to the next step. Listen as we discuss 5 ways to know if you are ready to move into couples recovery work.  We address how do we know if we're ready?  How do we know if he is ready?   Please keep in mind there are contraindications for entering couple therapy. When there is abuse, untreated mental illness, active addiction or lack of motivation to give up those outside the relationship for the benefit of the primary relationship. As part of couples recovery we discuss the benefit of a proper full therapeutic disclosure.  If you missed the interview with Geoff Steurer MS LMFT this year, make sure to go back and listen.  We had an excellent discussion with Geoff on what a therapeutic disclosure is and the steps to prepare for one.  You can listen to that episode here. Continuing our discussion on Mine, His, and Our Recovery, in this episode we talk about his recovery.  In the beginning of our own recovery journey, this was important for us to understand because we felt like we needed information and tools to be able to discern whether or not he was in recovery.  One important lesson we have learned is we cannot control or manage his recovery.   Listen as we discuss a list of ways to tell if he is working his own recovery from Rhyll Croshaw's book, "What Can I Do About Me?" #54: Her Recovery. Part 1 of Hers, His and Our Recovery | Healing with WORTH
On the podcast we talk about recovery all the time and we wanted to break it down and be more specific. Over the next 3 episodes we talk about what our recovery looks like as betrayed, what his recovery looks like as the betrayer or the addicted, and then what couple recovery looks like. These are three separate categories in this process that sometimes we want to lump all together under the umbrella of "recovery", and they really are distinct and separate categories.  In this episode we're going to start with our recovery and what that looks like, and give some specifics on what to look for. If you're wondering, am I in recovery or where am I in recovery, we hope that you find this episode helpful today.

#53: How Moving From Isolation to Connection Helps In Your Recovery | Healing with WORTH
How can breaking free from isolation that betrayal can create, to connectiion help us heal? Brene Brown says, "I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued when they can give and receive without judgment and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship."  We personally recognize that isolation is such a lonely place to be. One of the benefits of coming out of isolation into connection is that it really helps to combat the loneliness that you feel and to validate your experience and your feelings.  We have experienced healing and validation from sharing our story with others who can personally and deeply relate to you. #49 Somatic Experiencing and EMDR with Randi Gray. Part 2 | Healing with WORTH
Today's episode is the second part of our interview with licensed therapist Randi Gray on Somatic Experiencing and EMDR work in trauma recovery. At the end of 2020 we had a WORTH member come on the podcast and share how Somatic Experiencing helped her in her healing recovery.  This week we have Licensed therapist Randi Gray LCP, NCC on the podcast to discuss how Somatic Experiencing and EMDR can bring your recovery to the next level. Randi explains that Somatic Experiencing focuses on resolving fight flight and freeze responses that can sometimes can get trapped in our body during the initial traumatic experience.  This type of therapy allows for the completion of those self protective responses and release that energy, helping us move forward and take us to the next level of healing. Traumahealing.org states, "Somatic Experiencing® International is the leading authority on the SE™ method and is a major provider of training and educational programs. SE is a body-oriented therapeutic model that helps heal trauma and other stress disorders. #48 Somatic Experiencing and EMDR with Randi Gray LPC, NCC. Part 1 | Healing with WORTH
Today's episode is all about how to use a specialized form of therapy to release trauma from your body and bring your recovery to the next level. Randi explains that people generally use talk therapy to learn healthy coping skills where with EMDR and somatic experiencing you are doing deeper level of work, helping you access parts of your brain that stores trauma. Goodtherapy.org states "Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) was developed by Peter A. Levine, PhD to address the effects of trauma. Levine developed this approach after observing that prey animals, whose lives are routinely threatened in the wild, are able to recover readily by physically releasing the energy they accumulate during stressful events. Humans, on the other hand, often override these natural ways of regulating the nervous system with feelings of shame and pervasive thoughts, judgments, and fears. Somatic Experiencing aims to help people move past the place where they might be “stuck” in processing a traumatic event."

#45 Interview with Dr. Jill Manning. Barriers to Boundaries Part 2 | Healing with WORTH
This episode is in response to a listener question on how to set boundaries.  In the previous episode we addressed what boundaries are, what they are not, and how to set them.  In this episode we will be discussing barriers to boundaries, reasons why we have a hard time setting and keeping boundaries, and how to overcome these barriers. The quicker that we can learn to be effective in identifying, finding, setting boundaries, and forcing and upholding those when, and if they are violated, will be a gift to healing for both people. We are not suggesting the person setting boundaries is responsible for both people's healing paths, but it will have a positive effect on the whole family. We were honored to have Doctor Adam Moore on the podcast!  Dr. Moore is a licensed marriage and family therapist and co-owner of Sila health, which operates mental health counseling offices in Utah and Nevada.  He also hosts a mental health podcast called Pocket Therapist, and has been a guest on dozens of other podcasts. He is a relationship and mental health expert and specializes in treating compulsive pornography use.   Listen as we discuss the process of healing from trauma and what we need to go through in order to heal through "neural network rewiring".   How long will it take to heal from trauma?   How do we know if we are healing from trauma?  Adam explains that a sign that we are working through our trauma and healing is that we can be presented with events that usually trigger us and have a different response. To find out more about Adam and his work you can find him at: https://adammmoore.com/ Show Notes:  Studies show that married women are more likely to experience trauma symptoms than single women who's partners have a compulsive problem with pornography.   Susan Johnson EFT https://drsuejohnson.com/

#38 Physical Intimacy Part 2 | Healing with WORTH
In this second part of the conversation of Physical Intimacy we discuss what our beliefs are today around sexuality and some of the boundaries we have in place to have safety. We want to point out that safety involves much more than physical safety. It involves spiritual, emotional, and mental.  All types of safety are necessary to be established before you reach the connection of physical. If those other types of safety aren't established we are missing trust in the relationship which is a foundational part of a relationship. Trust is the groundwork for relationships to build any kind of connection on. #37 Physical Intimacy After Betrayal Part 1 | Healing with WORTH
This week we discuss how betrayal in a relationship affects physical intimacy as well as what physical intimacy can look like in a healthy relationship. Physical intimacy is a very complicated issue when addiction and pornography is present in a marriage. It's a very individual matter how you decide to share or not share physical touch and intimacy with your spouse. Safety is a very high priority and that's really determined by each woman in each circumstance.  What applies to us may not feel it applies to our listeners, but we are hoping that we can have a great discussion on some principles to help guide our listeners through this really sensitive topic and hopefully that will help you to get clear on some of the boundaries that you may need to implement in your own life. We really encourage you to listen to your gut, listen to things that really resonate with you and feel good in moving forward in this area. Notes: Quote: Dr. Terry Olson, "Chastity and fidelity are more than just sexual abstinence before marriage and physical fidelity after marriage. This is because human sexuality is not simply a physical matter. As the world invites us to believe chastity and fidelity begin in the spirit, not the body and involve the giving of our hearts are broken. Hearts are softened hearts to our mates. Unequivocally." M. Russell Ballard's talk: The Lord Needs You Now!: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/2015/09/the-lord-needs-you-now?lang=eng Episode on Healthy Sexuality with Jeanne Vattuone: https://anchor.fm/healingwithworth/episodes/Healing-with-WORTH-Healthy-Sexuality-with-Jeanne-Vattuone-Mini-Series-on-Abuse-7-emak0u

Abuse Mini Series #9: Licensed Clinicians Kim Day and Geoff Steurer Discuss Abuse Model | Healing with WORTH
Today's episode is from an episode on Geoff Steurer LMFT The Illuminate podcast with one of our WORTH clinicians Kimberly Day LMHCA.  https://anchor.fm/illuminate-podcast/episodes/Confronting-abuse-in-marriage---Kimberly-Day---Episode-74-enjsj4 Geoff's show notes: "In this episode I interview Kimberly Day, LMHCA, about how to better diagnose and confront abuse in marriage. Kim says that when we think of betrayal trauma and really understand the dynamics of a relationship when one partner is addicted to porn or sex, it's important to look at all abuse dynamics to get a complete picture. Abuse is an important and often underappreciated dimension in a multi-dimensional problem. Download the graph that corresponds with this episode (https://geoff-steurer.mykajabi.com/abuse-download?preview_theme_id=3204962) and you'll see that one axis is our typical 'addict-mode' behaviors: acting out, lying, even gaslighting (even though that is abuse), etc.- these are behaviors that rise out of the compulsions to act out, keep it secret, addict-mode thought distortions, etc.  Along this axis is where most all addiction and betrayal trauma is assessed and treated. But there is another dimension that helps us explain and more deeply understand and support a lot of people - that is the dimension of the Abusive Attitudes and Beliefs held by the addicted partner, including entitlement and superiority, out of which abuses of power and control, objectification of family members, and other forms of dehumanizing treatment arise. These are the underlying currents of devaluing and dehumanizing the partner that are the source of a lot of trauma, though they are very rarely fully recognized or addressed. This perspective/model helps us to explain some of the confusion that both practitioners and partners experience when the "acting out" is dealt with, but the treatment toward the partner does not improve. In this episode, we dialogue around what it might look like in each of the four quadrants and how the experience and the sources of trauma and safety/lack of safety may be different in each. We contrast the "Acting out High/Abusive Attitudes Low" quadrant from the "Acting out Low/Abusive Attitudes High"- this type of differentiation is what Kim believes is being missed when we blanket cover all addiction as abuse, or when we ignore so many other forms of abuse and clump them all into addict-mode behavior." Bonus #2: What is a Full Therapeutic Disclosure? With directors Alana and Luke Gordon | Healing With WORTH
This bonus episode is from a class taught by various members in WORTH.  The class we have chosen to share with you today on Therapeutic Disclosures is taught by our director Alana Gordon along with her husband Luke.  We wanted to give you a sample of one of the great resources we have in WORTH for our members.  The audio has been edited to protect the privacy of all participants of the class.  Alana and her husband Luke discuss the purpose of a full therapeutic disclosure, weighing the pros and cons and walk us through the process. Disclosures can give us the informed decision to choose to stay in a relationship.  The disclosure process has been shown to be beneficial to the majority of people, but each person should come in with their idea of why they're doing the disclosure and how it can be helpful to the relationship. #9 Don't Let Your Faith Become A Causality Of Your Trauma | Healing with WORTH
Women can experience a crisis of faith when dealing with betrayal trauma. While each crisis will be unique to the individual, when it does happen it seems like our whole world comes crashing down. Generally,  a faith crisis points to a kind of falling apart, a disintegration of one's former world that was previously held up by beliefs and propositions. Each of the hosts shares their heart-wrenching crisis of faith and how they got through it. While each of their stories is filled with pain and sorrow they realized that God is merciful and will buoy us up in times of challenge.  The hosts also share the many gifts that they have been given through the tender mercies of God. Many times these gifts came in such an unusual manner and with such precise timing that it really did confirm to us the reality of God’s existence that he has and always will buoy us up in times of trials. Life hurts us all in different ways, but it is how we respond — and who we become — that determines whether a trauma becomes a tragedy, and how the victim becomes the victor. #8 What Everybody Ought To Know About Dealing With Strong Emotions | Healing with WORTH
Emotional Self Care is all about how human beings have an innate desire to connect, to experience dynamic relationships with one another.   In addiction, however, this attachment is severed and leaves the betrayed feeling unsafe, which produces the fight, flight, or freeze response.  Though they are all three natural survival instincts none of these responses promote healing from trauma or rebuilding of a relationship. Learning what these strong emotions look like, sounds like and feels like, and applying the 7 suggested strategies, will help you be more aware of those responses in your own body and you will be better equipped to connect with those around you.
