We talk about body symmetry and how it applies in the gym and in daily life. Ep 37. Yoga, Nature & Finding your Center with Christine Mock, ERYT 500
Today on Health in the Hole, we are talking to Christine Mock, a yoga instructor about Hatha yoga, nature and finding your center. We talk about balancing your right and left sides and what all that means, not running yourself ragged, and practicing yoga in correspondence with the seasons. Christine believes your yoga practice should change your life, and she explains how. Get ready, at the end, she leads us through a short yoga practice. You don’t need any tools, just a small space on the floor or ground. Christine is a yoga teacher based in Teton Valley, Idaho. The ERYT 500 was certified in 2014 and has since taught over a thousand hours of yoga in 4 states. Her offerings span studio classes, festivals, public and private events, retreats and more. Pre-Concussion Testing and the New Sports Complex with Hayden Hilke, MSR, PT, DPT
Today we talk to Hayden Hilke, Doctor of Physical Therapy and owner of Peak PT. We jump back in to concussions, why we should do pre-concussion testing and who should have it – kids who downhill ski, play hockey and football for sure, but it would be a good idea for all the mountain bikers out there. We talk about Watershed Jackson, the non-profit working with concussion testing in our valley, as well as her new venture, Kilter PT and Sports Performance which will be going in to the new sports complex south of town. Hayden Hilke graduated from Furman University in 1997 with a BA in Sociology. She then moved to Jackson, Wyoming for two years prior to returning to South Carolina, where she earned her MSR, PT degree in 2003 from the Medical University of South Carolina. She earned a transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy degree in 2009 from AT Still University in Arizona. After working in various patient settings in and out of Jackson, she opened Peak Physical Therapy, an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic, in Wilson, WY. Due to her own personal experience with a back injury, and seeing a lack of resources and accessibility in Jackson, she started Watershed Jackson, a non-profit, that benefits athletes with traumatic brain and spinal cord injury. Since then, she has attended numerous courses and seminars, which specialize in progressive education and rehabilitation in current concussion management. She has partnered with several local youth and adult sport teams to help provide optimal pre- and post-concussion screening and rehabilitation. Through both her business and her non-profit, Hayden has helped educate the Jackson community on traumatic brain management, and worked to foster a more accessible local environment. http://peakptjackson.com/ Instagram: @peakptjackon @kilterpt @watershedjackson Follow along on our Health in the Hole Facebook page.    Episode webpage: https://www.jhbackcountryhealth.com/podcast26/ Jackson's local health and fitness podcast. Leaking Pee, Pain During Sex and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction with Cossette Burnham, DPT
On today’s episode of Health in the Hole, we are talking about peeing when you sneeze, pain during sex, leaking after prostate surgery, all kinds of pelvic floor dysfunction that is so much more common than we might think and so often not talked about. Our guest is Cossette Burnham, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Pelvic Floor Specialist. Pelvic floor dysfunction affects men and women. It isn’t just related to pregnancy. Some sports can actually be really hard on pelvic floors. And it’s not always a weak pelvic floor that is the problem, often we are too tight throughout our pelvic floor and aren’t any good at relaxing it. That sounds like a possibility here in Jackson, right? Cossette is one of my favorite people. She is the reason I was able to stay working out at the gym throughout my second and third trimester of pregnancy. When I found out last week that our kid was breech, she worked with me through all the spinning baby techniques after I was absolutely overwhelmed looking through the Spinning Baby website and showed up for my appointment unsuccessfully fighting back tears. She is so incredibly caring and knowledgeable and has so much enthusiasm for getting you back to better health. I can’t say enough how much I recommend seeing her – or another pelvic floor specialist - if identify with anything we talk about today. https://www.allbodytherapy.com/ https://www.instagram.com/cossette_dpt/ https://www.instagram.com/allbodytherapy/ Follow along on our Health in the Hole Facebook page.    Episode webpage: https://www.jhbackcountryhealth.com/podcast25/ Jackson's local health and fitness podcast. Don't Keep your Kid in a Bucket! with Lisa Robertson, Pediatric Occupational Therapist
Those car seat carriers aren’t just obnoxiously heavy, they may interfere with your infant’s sensory development, according to our guest today.  The child is getting auditory input, but with the carrier often covered they aren’t getting the matching visual input, and because they are staying on the same almost horizontal plane, they are missing vestibular input.  Does keeping your kid in a bucket correspond with the increasing numbers of developmental issues in children? Lisa Robertson, a pediatric occupational therapist, believes so, and isn’t afraid to get on a soapbox about it.   Lisa Robertson, OTR/L graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelors of science in Occupational Therapy in 1995. She worked in several areas of OT including home health, skilled nursing and hand therapy before focusing on pediatrics as her primary scope of practice. She is a homeschooling mom of twin 7 year old boys, enjoys all activities outdoors, as well as creating with fabric and clay indoors. She maintains and runs a small pediatric occupational therapy clinic in town. Brain Health with Dr. Annie Fenn, MD: What to Eat and What to Minimize.
We are talking about brain health, and how to preserve yours. Our guest today is the amazing Dr. Annie Fenn, OB/GYN turned chef and brain health specialist. Annie explains how what we eat drastically affects the health of our brain as we age, and how good food choices can minimize our risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Listen on to hear what is good for your brain health and what you might want to avoid. Dr. Annie Fenn is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist specialized in menopausal health. After practicing medicine for more than 20 years in Jackson, WY, she realized that helping people change what they eat was just as effective a health-giving intervention as prescribing pills or procedures. She traded her stethoscope for an apron and went back to school to study culinary arts in Mexico, Italy, and at the Culinary Institute of America. In 2015, Dr. Fenn founded the Brain Health Kitchen, and evidence-based online resource about how and what to eat to resist cognitive decline. The Brain Health Kitchen Cooking School, founded in 2017, is the only school of its kind focused specifically on fending off Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Students learn which foods are most neuroprotective, which ones accelerate cognitive decline, and how to prepare foods using brain-friendly cooking techniques. Dr. Fenn partners with the Aspen Brain Institute as the host and moderator of a Brain-Healthy Cooking series with leading neuroscientists and physicians in the brain health world. Dr. Fenn takes her cooking school on the road to provide classes throughout the country and abroad. Dr. Fenn lectures frequently about the impact of lifestyle and diet on Alzheimer’s risk as part of the Sempre Sano Wellness Retreat in Tuscany, Italy, as a frequent Visiting Chef at Rancho La Puerta, and at diverse venues throughout the country—women’s and men’s groups, churches, schools, and wellness retreats. To date, more than one thousand participants have enrolled in the hands-on cooking school. Dr. Fenn serves on the Science Advisory Board for actor Seth Rogen and his wife Lauren’s HFC (Hilarity For Charity) where she also creates content geared towards helping caregivers eat for brain health. She partners with Maria Shriver and the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement to host events to fund grants for female-specific dementia research. She serves on the Scientific Advisory Council for the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Foundation and is a Scientific Advisor for NeuroReserve. Dr. Fenn is currently under contract with Artisan Books for a science-based brain-healthy cookbook due out in 2022. A 25-year resident of Jackson, Wyoming, Dr. Fenn has served on the boards of Community Safety Network, Teton County Public Health Department, Teton Science Schools, and Hole Food Rescue. She partners with the local hospital to provide the Brain Works 7-day Boot Camp, a novel community-based dementia prevention program. When not developing recipes, writing, or teaching the Brain Health Kitchen method of cooking, Dr. Fenn enjoys hiking, cycling, skiing, fly-fishing, and foraging for mushrooms and huckleberries with her husband, sons, and dogs Orzo and Olive Oyl. Female Athlete Triad, Food Psychology & Nutrition Psychology with Eden Morris MS, RD, LD
I was enraptured by the interview with Eden Morris and am so excited to release this episode.  She has a powerful, I'd say tragic, story that started her on her path to becoming a dietician and now gives her amazing motivation and empathy in her work. Eden Morris is a registered dietitian based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. After experiencing serious health consequences from female athlete triad while competing on Texas A&M University's softball team, Eden decided to pursue a master's degree in nutrition & dietetics with the main goal of preventing what happened to her from happening to other individuals. Overall, Eden's goal is to help others improve their relationship with food in order to promote performance not just in athletics, but also in life. When she isn't busy working as a dietitian, Eden enjoys hiking, mountain biking, skiing, reading, watching movies, meeting new people, and spreading joy to others in whatever way she can. Yoga and Mental Health with Michelle Haag, RYT 200
Tonight I had the enormous pleasure of talking with Michelle Haag, RYT-200 (that means registered yoga teacher, 200 hours, if like me you didn't know).  She started us off with a short breathe-work meditation that had me feeling more relaxed and calm than I had all day.  Okay probably all week.  If you know me, I tend to run on the high-energy-until-I-crash train... Once I awoke from my blissful tranquility, we had an inspiring conversation on the mental health benefits of yoga, that inspired my non-yogi self to try out more yoga. Michelle's yoga journey began about 20 years ago, during her time in the financial industry in NYC, but her true turning point came in 2017 when she started experiencing vertigo. Michelle turned to daily yoga as a way to release excess energy and quiet the voices in her mind. Michelle views movement and rest as equally important, and is trained in both vinyasa flow and restorative yoga. She prides herself on providing a complete experience, including meditation, breath work (pranayama), a heat-building flow and a yummy stretchy cool-down. What is Physical Therapy? Why are Glutes Important? Dr. Emily Smith, DPT
Today I had a fabulous time chatting with Dr. Emily Smith, DPT. She's got some amazing and surprising stories of what can happen in physical therapy. Dr. Emily Smith grew up in Jackson and graduated from Jackson Hole High School as valedictorian in 2011. She has moved back home to practice after completing her rigorous continued education, consisting of two bachelor's degrees in Exercise Science and Spanish from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Montana, and a year of Orthopedic Residency at the University of Utah. The residency provided an additional year of mentorship, lectures, research, teaching, shadowing, and community outreach to help treat orthopedic patients with a deeper breadth of knowledge, as well as officially earned her the title of "Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Doctor of Physical Therapy". With this specialty, she focuses on musculoskeletal conditions including recovery from sports and orthopedic injury, pre- and post-operative rehabilitation, injury prevention, and return to sport. Outside of work, Emily has always loved being active, participating in swimming, track, and rodeo at Jackson Hole High School. She went on to compete in the heptathlon in track & field in college, and she continues to lead an active, outdoor lifestyle. Emily enjoys bringing the evidence-based therapies she has learned in larger healthcare systems back to her hometown. Working at ALL Body Therapy provides the unique opportunity to implement best care practices in the pool and on land during hour-long sessions that allow the patients to always be the focus of the care provided.
