Episode 139 - I Am My Culture: My Memoir of Self-Determination by Heal Your Life® Teacher and Coach, Annette Alix Roussin

In this captivating podcast episode, we delve into the profound and enlightening memoir journal penned by Annette Alix Roussin. Starting as a child in a remote First Nations community, Annette's life path took her from humble beginnings to the halls of academia at the University of Manitoba, where she pursued a Master of Social Work degree. This higher education expanded her knowledge and became a crucial vehicle for her to explore the profound impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities and her own personal journey.

Annette's memoir journal is a poignant narrative that reverberates with the generational effects of colonization on the mental health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples. It is a work grounded not only in her own experiences but also fortified by the insights of other Indigenous authors. Listeners will be moved by the candid accounts of how colonization deeply affected Annette's self-esteem and personal development.

Through her storytelling, Annette shares her own transformative journey of reconnecting with her culture and finding healing in the face of the painful legacy of colonialism. What makes this podcast episode truly unique is its invitation for readers to immerse themselves in this sacred space and reflect on their own relationship with colonization, self-identity as an Indigenous person, and their role as Canadian citizens. Journal prompts scattered throughout the book provide opportunities for introspection and engagement, making this memoir journal a powerful tool for personal growth and societal reflection.

Whether you are an Indigenous person navigating your own path to self-discovery or a non-Indigenous individual seeking to understand and empathize with the lasting effects of colonialism, this podcast episode offers valuable insights into Annette's remarkable journey and the broader implications of colonization. Join us as we unravel the pages of this compelling memoir journal, exploring the profound questions it raises about identity, healing, and the collective responsibility we all share in shaping a more inclusive and understanding future.

Episode 123 - Emmy Award-winning Reporter Jen Maxfield Shares True Stories of Overcoming Adversity in Her New Book, More After the Break

Episode 123 - Emmy Award-winning Reporter Jen Maxfield Shares True Stories of Overcoming Adversity in Her New Book, More After the Break

Jen Maxfield is an Emmy Award-winning reporter and anchor who started at NBC New York in 2013. Previously, she was a reporter and substitute anchor for Eyewitness News (ABC7). In her 22-year career, she has interviewed over 10,000 people and shared their stories. But then what? After the story has aired, what happens to people forever changed by tragedy, loss, and triumph?

This interview is about Jen Maxfield's new book, More After the Break; A Reporter Returns to Ten Unforgettable News Stories. The message that comes through is our ability to overcome adversity and build emotional resilience through personal healing. Jen speaks about kindness to humankind and how we can be empathetic and make a difference no matter who we are, where we are, or what we do.

Jen and I talk about kindness, emotional healing, boundaries, overcoming difficult emotions, noticing negative self-talk, pushing past our comfort zone and making a difference.

Here are the time-stamps to help you recognize the author's message. Enjoy!

7:50 We can show kindness in our day-to-day lives

12:30 We all need emotional healing

13:00 Handling emotions while re-living hard times

13:50 The importance of separating a stressful job life from our home life

14:00 Jen teaches us to compartmentalize

16:40 We overcome our fears and obstacles when we get outside our comfort zone

17:50 We can overcome adversity AND initiate lasting change from the hardship

18:30 When we notice our negative self-talk and push ourselves out of our comfort zone, we can make an impact on the lives of others and make a difference for humanity.

I enjoyed this interview because it speaks to the people behind the story, both the interviewer and the interviewee. We all relate to the stories in the book because we have all faced adversity and learned to overcome it. We are doing the best we can. We are still here. We have a story to tell and a heart that is healing. Our collective selves know we do better and feel better when we support each other and help heal hearts worldwide. Each of us can make a difference–often just outside our comfort zone.

More After the Break will be released on July 12/22 and can be purchased from your favorite book retailer or HERE.

Episode 117 - Learn To Value the "Middle of the Pack" with David Richman

Episode 117 - Learn To Value the "Middle of the Pack" with David Richman

As a former sedentary, over-weight, smoker, David Richman knew that he needed to focus not on what others wanted out of him, but on what he wanted out of life. Through lessons learned in business and sport, David introduces the concept of the “middle of the pack” and discusses how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. He applies this concept to life and business and adds value to the people he works with coming from the perspective of the “middle of the pack.”

David shares the steps we need to take to go from where we are at to where we want to be in our lives. To get to our destination we need to have a point A and David's plan will provide you with easy to follow steps towards clarity.

He is the author of Cycle of Lives: 15 People's Stories, 5,000 Miles, and a Journey Through the Emotional Chaos of Cancer.

100% of all net proceeds of his book go to charity.
Learn about his amazing trek on a bicycle and how that trek formed the contents of the book.

" I made my way across and up the United States, covering 4,700 miles, and visited the participants of my book, which chronicles the lives of 15 people who were affected by cancer, either as patients, doctors, researchers, caregivers, or otherwise. These poignant, significant, meaningful, helpful stories cover many aspects of cancer: caregiving and research, emotional and intellectual journeys, various stages of life, and more, so that combined, these memoirs will give us a complete view of the human experience as it relates to cancer."

I loved recording this episode and trust that you will enjoy it as well.

Below is the poem we speak about in this podcast:

Still I Rise

Maya Angelou - 1928-2014

You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?

Why are you beset with gloom?

’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells

Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,

With the certainty of tides,

Just like hopes springing high,

Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?

Bowed head and lowered eyes?

Shoulders falling down like teardrops,

Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?

Don’t you take it awful hard

’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines

Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?

Does it come as a surprise

That I dance like I’ve got diamonds

At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame

I rise

Up from a past that’s rooted in pain

I rise

I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,

Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear

I rise

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear

I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise

I rise

I rise.
