Playlists: Disco Elysium (and Cover Song Musings)

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion (but not really spoilers) for the video game Disco Elysium, including mention of some of the dark themes it covers and the fact that it has a LOT of the use of a specific homophobic slur.

Hannah Davey and Tyler Hartman are here to talk about music! Tyler is a dad rock (formerly punk) musician with industry knowledge and music production experience, Hannah Davey is a media enthusiast, writer, and podcast producer with opinions.

Hannah Davey has, in an unusual twist, fallen in love with a video game! Very unlike them. They discuss a bit of what playing Disco Elysium is like (not a happy time, but an interesting and occasionally hilarious time) and the playlist they built to capture the feeling of the game and the way that they experienced it. Tyler is so impressed with people who take art and make it their own, making the world bigger and cooler because of their interpretation. We also discuss covering songs and what that means to Tyler, and he discusses his plan for covering a song from the movie ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ that hit him hard.

Swords and Nick Lutsko

Hannah Davey and Tyler Hartman are here to talk about music! Tyler is a dad rock (formerly punk) musician with industry knowledge and music production experience, Hannah Davey is a media enthusiast, writer, and podcast producer with opinions.

Tyler is very excited to talk about Nick Lutsko’s latest album, ’Swords.’ He compares Nick Lutsko to Tim Kasher’s album ‘Cursive,’ Hannah Davey sees some Lemon Demon in this, and the two of them talk about the beautiful value of song composition. Tyler recommends Nick Lutsko's music videos, too, especially to the song “All Shook Up,” which is his favorite song (not on the ’Swords’ album). This leads us into discussing the value of brats and hot dogs. Stick around for a couple minutes after the outro to get a little glimpse into HD’s Texas non-adventure, too—this conversation has a lot of layers.

Tyler and his friend Derrick reminisce about their experiences playing various venues in Minneapolis, like the Red Raven, where it was a struggle to get an audience but a great space with great potential. Hannah Davey and Tyler interview Derrick about his process of making music, which is lyrics-heavy work compared to Tyler’s song-first-then-lyrics process. We get into what got all of us into hip hop music, too, and we have a whole list of albums to check out if you like nu metal (thanks, Derrick and Tyler) and esoteric indie rap.

Tyler and Hannah Davey start out talking about the show The Boys, which is on Amazon Prime. We then transition to talking about the state of human rights in the world right now, and how protest songs have helped us deal with or feel empowered during times when we’re really pissed at the status quo. Tyler and Hannah Davey break down their experience seeing Laura Jane Grace in concert. Other concerts have had varying experiences, especially during COVID, but this was a good one. There is a brief detour in the conversation to discuss obscene band merchandise, too. Owning filthy shirts sounds fun, but Tyler and HD are not very hardcore people, alas. And about 20 minutes in, Tyler addresses our most listened-to episode—his excellent, exhaustive history of Against Me!—and a piece of deliberately obfuscated information in that episode.

Grooving to Music (Especially at Concerts)

Hannah Davey and Tyler Hartman are here to talk about music! Tyler is a dad rock (formerly punk) musician with industry knowledge and music production experience, Hannah Davey is a media enthusiast, writer, and podcast producer with opinions.

Hannah Davey is obsessed with the song ‘I Want It All’ by COIN. They even tell you how they found it. Then Tyler and HD get derailed talking about memories associated with songs, especially if they’ve seen concerts of bands. They discuss HD’s good experiences in Mother Mother, Hozier, Kishi Bashi, and The Mountain Goats concerts. Sometimes fans can ruin a concert (Tyler advises avoiding Buckcherry and general punk show concerts for the audience). Hannah Davey shares a story of a Daughter concert they went to, and Tyler notes it can be hard when you expect a certain vibe from a band but it’s different live. He discusses Shakey Graves and a Trampled By Turtles and Deertick concert, and HD notes their time in an Andrew Bird concert and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats (who Tyler has also seen live). Lots of stories of seeing music live here, and the range of experiences that brings.

Songwriting Lies and Covers and Swears

Hannah Davey and Tyler Hartman are here to talk about music! Tyler is a dad rock (formerly punk) musician with industry knowledge and music production experience, Hannah Davey is a media enthusiast, writer, and podcast producer with opinions.

We talk about the weird feeling we get from listening to songs that aren’t written by the artist who play them. This leads us to talking about covers of songs, when they’re taken over by someone vs. impossible to cover with the same intensity. Also, Hannah Davey has just started a punk phase and is loving gleefully dirty bands, and we end up discussing how cool it is to use ‘the f-word’ in songs (and in life).

What Makes a Song ‘Good’?

What Makes a Song ‘Good’?

Hannah Davey and Tyler Hartman are here to talk about music! Tyler is a dad rock (formerly punk) musician with industry knowledge and music production experience, Hannah Davey is a media enthusiast, writer, and podcast producer with opinions.

Tyler and Hannah Davey discuss listening to songs over and over. Tyler admits he’s been on a Lemon Demon kick (especially ‘Two Trucks’ from the album Spirit Phone). Tyler notes the silliness and absurdity of Marc Rebillet, and other artists who create with a great deal of skill while also being very silly. Dragonforce is a band that is technically skilled with massively complex songs, but does that make a song great? Bob Dylan creates timeless songs that are still well-known and popular today, but Tyler’s 5-year-old hates how Dylan's voice sounds. The most iconic songs are often 3-chord songs that resonate with people in terms of lyrics. Tyler discusses the value of lyrics over musicality. It’s very interesting to see what lyrics stick in the mind, and Hannah Davey reads some examples of very specific yet universal lyrics from The Mountain Goats and Against Me! HD also presents the Johnny Cash version of Nine Inch Nails’ song ‘Hurt’ as an example of a song that is very popular and very simple. Ultimately, we have no idea what makes something ‘art.’ But we have some ideas you can check out!

The whole conceit of this podcast is built around different experiences of music and discussing those divergences. Hannah Davey and Tyler talk about this experience, as well as the difficulty of separating art from the artist when the artist does something horrible but you really enjoy the song. We don’t go into any details about the crimes people have committed or been accused of committing, but we do speak them pretty starkly. If this would be triggering, we promise we’ll move on to less depressing topics next episode.

Against Me! - A History

Against Me! - A History

Hannah Davey and Tyler Hartman are here to talk about music! Tyler is a dad rock (formerly punk) musician with industry knowledge and music production experience; Hannah Davey is a media enthusiast, writer, and podcast producer with opinions.

Tyler gives a history of Against Me! and their connection with Fat Wreck Chords and Epitaph Records as he goes into the production history of the band, as well as how complicated it felt to love a punk band and then see them as ‘sellouts.’ We take a moment to note that They Might Be Giants appeared on MTV and it’s not a bad thing to want to make money doing a thing you love. We especially dig into how much we love the song ‘Thrash Unreal.’ We talk about the happy, angry, joyous stories that Laura Jane Grace shares in her music, and really recommend listening to Against Me!’s album New Wave. Tyler notes how well-produced it sounds, and how raw they sound nowadays. And then we spend a few moments noting how it can be dangerous to dig into the punk and metal scene, and how it’s a counterculture that’s ripe ground for white nationalists and libertarians. You can curate your own music experience, though, as Spotify’s algorithms do and as Hannah Davey has with their listening patterns.

The Long and Short of Songs

Hannah Davey and Tyler Hartman are here to talk about music! Tyler is a dad rock (formerly punk) musician with industry knowledge and music production experience; Hannah Davey is a media enthusiast, writer, and podcast producer with opinions.

In this episode, Tyler and Hannah Davey discuss the value of long songs versus short songs. Tyler recommends Between the Buried and Me (in a respect way), HD talks about the wonder of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ by Queen and ‘The Shrine’ by Fleet Foxes. They both get detrailed thinking about the Lemonade album by Beyonce. Tyler talks about Meatloaf and the expansion of music production during that era, and notes the band Wilhelm Scream and how short their songs are. HD wishes ‘Generator (First Floor)’ by Freelance Whales was longer, as well as some songs by Patients and unkle stiltskin (the early release band names of Radical Face). HD and Tyler both discuss how hard it is to end stories and songs. It’s also sometimes hard to end podcasts (though Tyler and HD have no trouble jumping right into starting them).
