#39 – The Death of Life   Recorded: 25/11/2020   

People struggle every day, sometimes without ever displaying that they are troubled. Alan Z. Freuer is quoted as saying: “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”   Although struggle is not exclusive to men, the rise in self-harm and suicide in all genders has become a sad fact of modern life.    We approach the subject of suicide from all angles including people we have known who have taken their own lives, how we deal with our own difficult situations and share our personal experiences with ‘dark’ thoughts.

Today the team talk with Dr Seamus MacAuley, an online Substance Abuse and Addiction Counsellor. Seamus talks to us about working with Adam on prison addiction treatment programmes, his own experiences with addiction and the kinds of things that might prompt someone into seeking change.     

We speculate on the variety of different modern addictions we face and what all of us can do to prevent our ‘addictions’ from taking hold.

Today we welcome Sally-Ann Hart in to talk to us about Protective Behaviours, a safety awareness and resilience building programme which helps children and adults to recognise any situation where they feel worried or unsafe, such as feeling stressed, bullied or threatened; and explores practical ways to keep safe.    

We focus on the language we use in day-to-day life and how this can be modified, in the spirit of maintaining healthy relationships with ourselves and others.     We also explore how the language we use, however well-intentioned, can have a dramatic and long-lasting negative effect on people.      Sally-Ann shares tips on how we can be more empathic to others based on the language they use and how we can change our own language to boost our self-esteem.

#19 – Hear and Now

Today we tell you about what we have been up to as a company and our future plans. Just this week the Hear2Listen team have put our podcast on Spotify (see link below), significantly updated our website and developed several programmes from scratch in the response to the struggles that people in our community face.      

In the second half we have a debate about the power of language and how it’s good to be mindful of the words we use.    

PS - This is the first time we have used visuals and we still  have lots to learn. We fully appreciate the quality is POOR in places and we have since learned where it was we went wrong.
