Today’s episode is all about nothing. I mean it’s not dead air, but I just had some fun talking about the random things going on in my life. On today’s podcast, I welcome Martha Arrington. She is a painter, a certified zentangle instructor, educator, and amazing human. I met Martha on Instagram awhile back and instantly became a fan of her work. It’s truly beautiful and unique, just like Martha. S3E12: Masking & ADHD
Masking. When I started to research ADHD, this was a term that came up quite a bit. Masking “involves hiding symptoms or overcompensating for them. When you mask ADHD, you try to act like you do not have the condition” (PsychCentral). I knew that I had some masking tendencies but it’s a journey to start identifying what is and isn’t a mask. In this episode, I am covering information about what masking is, examples of masking, consequences of masking, and some helpful steps to accept yourself - neurodiversity and all. This is part 2 of the “Reversing the Rachel Hollis effect - Deconstructing Toxic Positivity” podcast set. S3E10: Reversing the Rachel Hollis Effect (Deconstructing Toxic Positivity Part 1)
Toxic positivity is something that I had not really heard of until the last year or two. But it’s something I am extremely familiar with. For me, Rachel Hollis was the influencer that pulled me into this way of thinking and being. Positivity on it’s own is not a bad emotion and it’s one of my personal favorites. When it starts masking the real emotions and your aren’t able to feel those or feel like they aren’t valid, that is where the problem lies. This podcast is part 1 of 2. Here I am reviewing my personal past and sharing a video book review I did back in 2018. This will help set us up for part 2 where we go deeper into toxic positivity and how we can overcome it. S3E9: Finding Harmony with Work & Life
Finding harmony between work and life is hard. This week we are navigating the workplace as we talk about work/life harmony. So what’s that all about. When people talk about work/life balance that brings up this image of the scales of justice. Balancing your time between the two is just not possible, you would be working 84 hours a week. that’s a hard pass for me. But when you can get into a cycle or flow between the two...that’s where you can find harmony. S3E8: The Power of Telling Your Story w/Michael Rix
You know those people that you see online and you are drawn into their story because it’s powerful. Maybe it’s a story of change or survival or triumph. That’s what Michael Rix did when I first started following him on Instagram. Through the strings of his banjo and the words of his book, he has been able to share his story of going from cult to country. I reached out to him a couple months ago and asked if he would come on the podcast to share his story. Thankfully he said yes and today I am sharing our conversation. There is power in telling your story and Michael is a great example of that. I hope you enjoy this conversation. Let me know your takeways in the comments! S3E6: Did Elizabeth Holmes set the clock back for women?
Recently I watched “The Dropout” docuseries on Hulu, which is about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. So many questions came to mind as I watched this story. But the one that kept nagging at me was focused on the impact Elizabeth Holmes had for the women that come after her. On today’s podcast I set out to review this story and analyze the impact she had or has in come cases. Then I wanted to make sure we took away some lessons learned from this situation. S3E3: Imposter Syndrome w/Tim Thorn
In one of the last episodes of the 100 Day Challenge, I talked about imposter syndrome. More specifically, I asked if men suffered from imposter syndrome and if they did, do they talk about it. Whenever imposter syndrome comes up in, it seems to be focused on women and how we deal with it. My friend, Tim, raised his hand and said he would love to talk about imposter syndrome with me. We had a really great conversation on imposter syndrome, perfection, and being open about those feelings. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. Day 74: Stop making burnout a badge of honor
I saw this point on LinkedIn the other day and it said:  We NEED to stop glamourising overworking. Please. The absence of sleep, good diet, exercise, relaxation, and time with friends and family isn't something to be applauded. Too many people wear their burnout as a badge of honour. And it needs to change. I have thoughts about this from a personal view and as a leader. So I got out my soapbox...there's your warning that I get a little feisty.  Laughter, Love, and Blessings, Heather Social Links @msheatherbdot @connectthedots_podcast @polkadotdesk thepolkadotdesk.com

Day 56: Love Actually
This movie has such a great cast, great story lines, and great music. It's definitely my favorite movie. The opening monologue from Hugh Grant's character says, "Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around." Such a timeless message that we need.  Enjoy my rambling of love for this film! Day 33: Overcoming Perfectionism
I'll be honest I didn't realize until I started recording this episode how fired up I would get. This episode is a bit longer but it's a subject close to my heart. I am a recovering perfectionist. But if you are striving for that perfect 10, you will end up missing out on all that comes after 10.  Brene' Brown says, "Healthy striving is self-focused: How can I improve? Perfectionism is other-focused: What will people think?" I am going to put that on a card and set it on my desk so I can read it every day. I have to remind myself how to have the healthy striving mindset daily.  Check out Brene's books, Dare to Lead and Atlas of the Heart on her website or wherever books are sold. Day 11: Quote of the Day
Today we kick off 10 days of quotes and commentary. Our first quote is:  "Just because something is popular doesn’t mean you have to buy it. Life isn’t about doing what everyone else is doing. It’s about doing your own thing. Anything that doesn’t align with who you are isn’t worth doing. Do what feels right for you. You have a little voice in your heart that tells you what the right thing is. Don’t ignore it. Follow it even if that means doing something unusual, something that no one else has done before. Go for it even if it doesn’t make sense to other people. The right things doesn’t have to be conventional." - m. chase Love and Blessings,  Heather Social Links: @msheatherbdot @connectthedots_podcast @polkadotdesk thepolkadotdesk.com

24: Purpose, Clarity, and the Unhurried Life with Jen Brazeal
Today is a podcast in the making for almost a year. I was finally able to sit down with Jen Brazeal. Jen and I met at Blissdom in Nov 2019. Jen has such a sweet soul and is on a mission to help others find an unhurried lifestyle. But Jen didn’t get to this spot overnight, she was a teacher and photographer, an author, and now podcast host! She shared her journey with me and along the way gave such good insight on how to find purpose and clarity. I hope you enjoy this girl talk session as much as I did. It’s one I’ll be listening to again and again. ------------------------ Jen’s Links IG: @jenbrazeal Jen’s website: https://jbrazeal.com Creative Business Startup Audiobook https://jbrazeal.lpages.co/cbs-free-audiobook/ Total Phone Declutter (Free Photo Challenge): https://jbrazeal.com/OYPC ------------------------ Let's get ready to connect the dots! 22: Seeking to understand w/April Corbett: A conversation about race
Today, I welcome April Corbett to the show. She is an engineer, project manager, and an amazing creative. April and I met at Blissdom back in November 2019. I was instantly drawn to her message. Back in the early summer after as the civil unrest in the US was boiling over, I reached out to April to have a conversation. A conversation about race, specifically. As a white woman, I knew I needed to take a step back to listen and learn. April was kind enough to spend time talking with me about situations she has been in and helped me to see places where I can change. After our first conversation, I knew I had to have her come on the podcast to share this message. This conversation is long and covers a lot of ground. But this conversation is good, deep, and timely. I hope this podcast helps you see another perspective so we can continue to fight for equality and unity in our country. It’s more important than ever that we come together, offering respect and understanding of one another. I would love to hear your feedback on this episode so please reach to me on Instagram, Facebook, or email. XO, Heather Social Links: @msheatherbdot @polkadotdesk heather@thepolkadotdesk.com

21: Burn the Boats
Episode 21: Burn the Boats Today I’m going to give you the run down of our recent move to Florida. I’m excited to share this experience with you and kick off a new “season” of the Connect the Dots podcast. I called this episode Burn the Boats because essentially that’s kind of what has happened. If you have never heard this phrase or one like burn the bridge, it alludes to famous incidents where a commander would land in hostile territory and order his men to burn their ships. It’s conquer or be killed for them. It’s not so drastic for us, but selling our house in AL and Jay leaving his full time job is pretty much us burning the boats. We were comfortable and our life had become stagnant. We were just going through the motions of life. We were living for the 3 or 4 weeks of vacation we got each year. Nothing else mattered. I hope our story of change helps you see that while it can be scary, change can also be very good. Hit me up on social media and join in on the conversation. Let's get ready to connect the dots! Things I learned this week
Reflecting on all the things that I have been learning this past week in today's episode. I know I will probably still say something wrong or not acknowledge something I should, but I want you to know that I care. I care about you. If you are reading this or listening to this podcast, I care about you. I want this world to be a better place.  Here is a link to the book I'm currently listening to: https://www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com Romans 12:8-13 says “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” See you over on IG! XO, Heather @msheatherbdot

A Memorial Day Tribute
Well today is Memorial Day and I wanted to share something that really impacted me this past week. It's the story/meaning of the Fallen Soldier table. I didn't know this story. I hate that it took me 36 years to know this story. I recorded this podcast while doing an IG Live so if you want to check that out head over to @msheatherbdot.  I warn you there are lots of tears. I tried my best to keep it together but this just wrecked me. Sending love to those who have lost loved ones! The Fallen Soldier's Table The POW/MIA table is smaller than the others, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his or her oppressors. This table is separate from the others and can be set for one to four place settings to represent each service participating in the event. The white tablecloth draped over the table represents the purity of their response to our country’s call to arms. The empty chair depicts an unknown face, representing no specific Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine, but all who are not here with us. The table itself is round to show that our concern for them is never ending. The Bible represents faith in a higher power and the pledge to our country, founded as one nation under God. The black napkin stands for the emptiness these warriors have left in the hearts of their families and friends. A Purple Heart medal can be pinned to the napkin. The single red rose reminds us of their families and loved ones. The red ribbon represents the love of our country, which inspired them to answer the nation’s call. The yellow candle and its yellow ribbon symbolize the everlasting hope for a joyous reunion with those yet accounted for. The slices of lemon on the bread plate remind us of their bitter fate. The salt upon the bread plate represent the tears of their families. The wine glass, turned upside down, reminds us that our distinguished comrades cannot be with us to drink a toast or join in the festivities of the evening. -- Quoted from https://navylive.dodlive.mil/2014/10/06/the-powmia-table-a-place-setting-for-one-a-table-for-all/ XO,  Heather @msheatherbdot @polkadotdesk thepolkadotdesk.com

On today's episode, I'm giving a commencement speech for those who are graduating in 2020. 19: Speaking & Socks w/Carrie Grace
Today, I bring you my conversation with Carrie Grace. I met her at Blissdom back in November of 2019. Her website tag line describes her perfectly, “encourager, motivational speaker, & believer in kindness.” She sat down with me to talk all things speaking and socks. Do these two things seem related? Maybe not now, but they will after you listen to the podcast. We talked about how she got her start in speaking and the process of preparing. She gave some behind the scenes of crafting the customer experience. We also talked about her new company, The Kindness Socks. The mission she has for this brand is amazing! It’s more than just a sock for a sock. It’s about spreading kindness and giving back in different ways. Carrie Grace is one of the most strategic and authentic people I have ever met. 18: You are not a failure.
Today we talk about the feelings that can come up when made a mistake or don’t meet a goal. That feeling of failing can be destructive if you aren’t careful. It can derail future progress. It can move you from a positive outlook to a negative spiral. But I want you to know that… You. Are. Not. A. Failure. You may make a mistake or miss a goal, but you can take the steps to learn from it and come out on the other side wiser and stronger than ever. Henry Ford said, “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” So let’s go learn something. Let's get ready to connect the dots! 17: Hearing God’s Voice w/Jenny Randle
Today, I interviewed Jenny Randle. Jenny Randle is a nationally sought-after speaker, award-winning creative, co-host of the Shut the Should Up podcast, and author of Courageous Creative and Getting to Know God’s Voice (releasing October 2020 with Harvest House Publishers). She helps people navigate into a space of freedom within their personal life, leadership and church culture and sometimes a good freestyle rap is involved in the process. We cover several topics from her books to my journey back to the community of church. We laugh, we cry, and we learn a lot. She brought to light so many things for me and I know that she will help you as well. One of my favorite quotes from the podcast is “God doesn’t waste anything.” This really hit me because lately I’ve been navigating the calling I feel from God. The reminder that He doesn’t waste anything means that we can learn from everything. Let me know what you think and join in on the conversation. 15: Message in the Mess
Today, I am bringing you my thoughts about how to find the message in the mess that is currently happening due to the COVID-19. As we all shelter in place, our new normal is one that has no definite end date. I want to share my thoughts and suggestions for making the best of this situation. Here is a quick run down of the topics we cover. “Optimism helps. Optimism is different from positivity. And optimism is not naive either. Optimism accepts the truth of reality and looks forward to a brighter future. Optimism is the foundation of hope. And hope keeps us moving forward. There is a light at the end of this tunnel and we will get there…together.” - Simon Sinek Tips to stay connected while social distancing. Tips for your mental health. 12: Leaders, how are you treating your customers?
Today, I bring you a show that is a bit longer than my previous shows but I had a lot of stuff I wanted to address. I didn’t have any formal notes for this episode so it was kind off the cuff. This is the real me for sure with all the rambles. The focus of the show is to make ourselves think about how we are treating our customers. Specifically, if you are a leader, how are you treating your customers. These would be your direct reports, your boss, your peers, etc. I share a few stories of leaders that showed me how I didn’t want to lead and a few stories of leaders that continue to inspire me today. I referenced a couple of Bible verses and quotes from The Maxwell Leadership Bible when I get into the topic of servant leadership. Let’s be honest, Jesus is the example I think of when I think about serving others as a leader. Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be y our slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. - Matt 20: 26-28 Commentary on this verse says, “Leadership is about adding value, not getting perks.” We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. - Romans 12:6-8 Commentary on these verses says, “Every leader is a manager whose goal should be to maximize everyone’s gift.” Yep…those are mic drop moments in my opinion. 09: What I wish I knew about paying for college
Today, we look at the advice I wish my 35 year old self could have given to my 18 year old self. Here is a quick run down of the topics we cover. What is a Subsidized loan? What is an Unsubsidized loan? Here are the top 5 things I wish I had known. You don’t have to take all the money they offer you. Pay the interest during school. Apply for scholarships every year. You don’t have to graduate in 4 years. Work, save, and pay for classes as you go. Talk to a financial advisor. I know there are a lot of people that are in the same boat (or worse) than me. I feel like it’s part of my responsibility to help educate the next generation so they don’t fall into the same traps. I am researching for future episodes more about ways to fund college.
