24: Purpose, Clarity, and the Unhurried Life with Jen Brazeal
Today is a podcast in the making for almost a year. I was finally able to sit down with Jen Brazeal. Jen and I met at Blissdom in Nov 2019. Jen has such a sweet soul and is on a mission to help others find an unhurried lifestyle. But Jen didn’t get to this spot overnight, she was a teacher and photographer, an author, and now podcast host! She shared her journey with me and along the way gave such good insight on how to find purpose and clarity. I hope you enjoy this girl talk session as much as I did. It’s one I’ll be listening to again and again. ------------------------ Jen’s Links IG: @jenbrazeal Jen’s website: https://jbrazeal.com Creative Business Startup Audiobook https://jbrazeal.lpages.co/cbs-free-audiobook/ Total Phone Declutter (Free Photo Challenge): https://jbrazeal.com/OYPC ------------------------ Let's get ready to connect the dots! 22: Seeking to understand w/April Corbett: A conversation about race
Today, I welcome April Corbett to the show. She is an engineer, project manager, and an amazing creative. April and I met at Blissdom back in November 2019. I was instantly drawn to her message. Back in the early summer after as the civil unrest in the US was boiling over, I reached out to April to have a conversation. A conversation about race, specifically. As a white woman, I knew I needed to take a step back to listen and learn. April was kind enough to spend time talking with me about situations she has been in and helped me to see places where I can change. After our first conversation, I knew I had to have her come on the podcast to share this message. This conversation is long and covers a lot of ground. But this conversation is good, deep, and timely. I hope this podcast helps you see another perspective so we can continue to fight for equality and unity in our country. It’s more important than ever that we come together, offering respect and understanding of one another. I would love to hear your feedback on this episode so please reach to me on Instagram, Facebook, or email. XO, Heather Social Links: @msheatherbdot @polkadotdesk heather@thepolkadotdesk.com

21: Burn the Boats
Episode 21: Burn the Boats Today I’m going to give you the run down of our recent move to Florida. I’m excited to share this experience with you and kick off a new “season” of the Connect the Dots podcast. I called this episode Burn the Boats because essentially that’s kind of what has happened. If you have never heard this phrase or one like burn the bridge, it alludes to famous incidents where a commander would land in hostile territory and order his men to burn their ships. It’s conquer or be killed for them. It’s not so drastic for us, but selling our house in AL and Jay leaving his full time job is pretty much us burning the boats. We were comfortable and our life had become stagnant. We were just going through the motions of life. We were living for the 3 or 4 weeks of vacation we got each year. Nothing else mattered. I hope our story of change helps you see that while it can be scary, change can also be very good. Hit me up on social media and join in on the conversation. Let's get ready to connect the dots! Things I learned this week
Reflecting on all the things that I have been learning this past week in today's episode. I know I will probably still say something wrong or not acknowledge something I should, but I want you to know that I care. I care about you. If you are reading this or listening to this podcast, I care about you. I want this world to be a better place.  Here is a link to the book I'm currently listening to: https://www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com Romans 12:8-13 says “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” See you over on IG! XO, Heather @msheatherbdot

A Memorial Day Tribute
Well today is Memorial Day and I wanted to share something that really impacted me this past week. It's the story/meaning of the Fallen Soldier table. I didn't know this story. I hate that it took me 36 years to know this story. I recorded this podcast while doing an IG Live so if you want to check that out head over to @msheatherbdot.  I warn you there are lots of tears. I tried my best to keep it together but this just wrecked me. Sending love to those who have lost loved ones! The Fallen Soldier's Table The POW/MIA table is smaller than the others, symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his or her oppressors. This table is separate from the others and can be set for one to four place settings to represent each service participating in the event. The white tablecloth draped over the table represents the purity of their response to our country’s call to arms. The empty chair depicts an unknown face, representing no specific Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine, but all who are not here with us. The table itself is round to show that our concern for them is never ending. The Bible represents faith in a higher power and the pledge to our country, founded as one nation under God. The black napkin stands for the emptiness these warriors have left in the hearts of their families and friends. A Purple Heart medal can be pinned to the napkin. The single red rose reminds us of their families and loved ones. The red ribbon represents the love of our country, which inspired them to answer the nation’s call. The yellow candle and its yellow ribbon symbolize the everlasting hope for a joyous reunion with those yet accounted for. The slices of lemon on the bread plate remind us of their bitter fate. The salt upon the bread plate represent the tears of their families. The wine glass, turned upside down, reminds us that our distinguished comrades cannot be with us to drink a toast or join in the festivities of the evening. -- Quoted from https://navylive.dodlive.mil/2014/10/06/the-powmia-table-a-place-setting-for-one-a-table-for-all/ XO,  Heather @msheatherbdot @polkadotdesk thepolkadotdesk.com

20: For the Graduates
On today's episode, I'm giving a commencement speech for those who are graduating in 2020. So many graduations have been cancelled or postponed due to the guidelines around COVID-19, I wanted to take a moment to help offer some advice for those moving into a new chapter of their lives.  One of the phases I say several time in the episode is "Bet on you." You have over come so much in this last semester of your education. You have grown more than you realize. Bet on you. You can handle hard things that come your way. You can handle change. You are ready to connect the next dot in your journey.  Congratulations to all the graduates of 2020! 19: Speaking & Socks w/Carrie Grace
Today, I bring you my conversation with Carrie Grace. I met her at Blissdom back in November of 2019. Her website tag line describes her perfectly, “encourager, motivational speaker, & believer in kindness.” She sat down with me to talk all things speaking and socks. Do these two things seem related? Maybe not now, but they will after you listen to the podcast. We talked about how she got her start in speaking and the process of preparing. She gave some behind the scenes of crafting the customer experience. We also talked about her new company, The Kindness Socks. The mission she has for this brand is amazing! It’s more than just a sock for a sock. It’s about spreading kindness and giving back in different ways. Carrie Grace is one of the most strategic and authentic people I have ever met. 18: You are not a failure.
Today we talk about the feelings that can come up when made a mistake or don’t meet a goal. That feeling of failing can be destructive if you aren’t careful. It can derail future progress. It can move you from a positive outlook to a negative spiral. But I want you to know that… You. Are. Not. A. Failure. You may make a mistake or miss a goal, but you can take the steps to learn from it and come out on the other side wiser and stronger than ever. Henry Ford said, “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” So let’s go learn something. Let's get ready to connect the dots! 17: Hearing God’s Voice w/Jenny Randle
Today, I interviewed Jenny Randle. Jenny Randle is a nationally sought-after speaker, award-winning creative, co-host of the Shut the Should Up podcast, and author of Courageous Creative and Getting to Know God’s Voice (releasing October 2020 with Harvest House Publishers). She helps people navigate into a space of freedom within their personal life, leadership and church culture and sometimes a good freestyle rap is involved in the process. We cover several topics from her books to my journey back to the community of church. We laugh, we cry, and we learn a lot. She brought to light so many things for me and I know that she will help you as well. One of my favorite quotes from the podcast is “God doesn’t waste anything.” This really hit me because lately I’ve been navigating the calling I feel from God. The reminder that He doesn’t waste anything means that we can learn from everything. Let me know what you think and join in on the conversation. 15: Message in the Mess
Today, I am bringing you my thoughts about how to find the message in the mess that is currently happening due to the COVID-19. As we all shelter in place, our new normal is one that has no definite end date. I want to share my thoughts and suggestions for making the best of this situation. Here is a quick run down of the topics we cover. “Optimism helps. Optimism is different from positivity. And optimism is not naive either. Optimism accepts the truth of reality and looks forward to a brighter future. Optimism is the foundation of hope. And hope keeps us moving forward. There is a light at the end of this tunnel and we will get there…together.” - Simon Sinek Tips to stay connected while social distancing. Tips for your mental health. 12: Leaders, how are you treating your customers?
Today, I bring you a show that is a bit longer than my previous shows but I had a lot of stuff I wanted to address. I didn’t have any formal notes for this episode so it was kind off the cuff. This is the real me for sure with all the rambles. The focus of the show is to make ourselves think about how we are treating our customers. Specifically, if you are a leader, how are you treating your customers. These would be your direct reports, your boss, your peers, etc. I share a few stories of leaders that showed me how I didn’t want to lead and a few stories of leaders that continue to inspire me today. I referenced a couple of Bible verses and quotes from The Maxwell Leadership Bible when I get into the topic of servant leadership. Let’s be honest, Jesus is the example I think of when I think about serving others as a leader. Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be y our slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. - Matt 20: 26-28 Commentary on this verse says, “Leadership is about adding value, not getting perks.” We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. - Romans 12:6-8 Commentary on these verses says, “Every leader is a manager whose goal should be to maximize everyone’s gift.” Yep…those are mic drop moments in my opinion. I close out with 5 ways to lead by serving from an article published by Wilbanks Consulting. 09: What I wish I knew about paying for college
Today, we look at the advice I wish my 35 year old self could have given to my 18 year old self. Here is a quick run down of the topics we cover. What is a Subsidized loan? What is an Unsubsidized loan? Here are the top 5 things I wish I had known. You don’t have to take all the money they offer you. Pay the interest during school. Apply for scholarships every year. You don’t have to graduate in 4 years. Work, save, and pay for classes as you go. Talk to a financial advisor. I know there are a lot of people that are in the same boat (or worse) than me. I feel like it’s part of my responsibility to help educate the next generation so they don’t fall into the same traps. I am researching for future episodes more about ways to fund college. I feel like if we are going to spend time together we need to get acquainted. Once we get that our of the way, I jump into what Connect the Dots is all about. I drill down into what you can expect to learn about career, customers, and community. I appreciate your time in listening to this very first episode. Please subscribe so you get notified of new episodes when they launch.  Hit me up on social media and let me know what you think! Let's get ready to connect the dots!
