In episode 67, we speak with Associate Professor Kathy Kniepmann, from the Occupational Therapy program from Washington University of St. Louis (Number three ranked OT program in the nation). Dr. Kniepmann is an occupational therapist and a Certified Health Education Specialist. She serves as both a faculty member for the OT program and also part of the admissions team. There have been a lot of OT Gusties be admitted and choose to attend Wash U in the past 5 years so it great to learn more about the admission process and the unique features of their program.

Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program
Chief Matthew Gustafson, Chief Derrick Milstead, and Lieutenant Commander Tony Rohner guests in episode #64 for the Navy. The focus of our podcast will be on the Navy Health Profession Scholarship program. This scholarship is for students pursuing: medicine, dentistry, optometry and clinical psychology graduate programs. Volunteer Programs: Parkinson Exercise & Kickboxing & Mayo Caring Hands
Episode 66: Welcome to the Gustavus Health Professions Podcast Season Four! My name is Heather Banks and I am here with my colleague Heidi Selzler-Bahr and in today’s episode # 66 we have guests, current pre-med student Amelia Qualey, class of 2025 and current pre-PT student Owen Johnson, class of 2024.
The focus of our episode today is on our two Volunteer programs, the Mayo Clinic Caring Hands program that Amelia is a part of and the Parkinson Exercise class which Owen is a part of. Amelia and Owen are going to talk about how they got involved, the training they received and what the commitment of the volunteer program looks like. TODAY, Wednesday, March 20th, 2024 the applications are available online (check your vitals email for the link) and they are due on May 1. NEW Physician Assistant Program @ Concordia University, St. Paul, MN
In today's episode we speak with Eric Van Hecke. He is a very enthusiastic guest and loves his career working as a PA. He has recently been named as the Founding PA Program Director, at Concordia University - St. Paul. He offers so much great PA and life advice, as well as all the exciting things about a new PA program underway at Concordia University, St. Paul. The Concordia University - St. Paul PA Program is currently seeking ARC-PA provisional accreditation and is NOT currently an ARC-PA accredited PA program.
Some additional background information, "After graduating from the Augsburg PA program in 2009, Eric served for one year in Iraq as a PA with the US Army. Returning in 2010 and for the following eight years, he continued his career in Emergency Medicine. He gained experience in both large, level one, emergency departments as well as small, rural community-based emergency departments. For the last several years, he has worked in critical-access, single-coverage provider EDs. He gained the NCCPA CAQ in Emergency Medicine in 2010. His passion for PA education has been a consistent theme throughout his career as he has precepted numerous students and has been a regular lecturer at several PA programs. As part of the Clinical Phase Faculty with Augsburg, Eric is committed to assisting students develop into dynamic, professional and competent medical providers in a constantly changing clinical environment. Outside of his work he enjoys spending time with his wife, Cyri and their three children. He is an avid endurance athlete and has completed several marathons including consecutive Boston Marathons and has completed two half distance and one full distance Ironman triathlons."

Reagan Larson, Physician Associate (formerly phsycian assistant) @ the University of Iowa
Today we are delighted to have Regan Larson Gustavus Adolphus College graduate of 2022 on our podcast. St. George University Advisor Trip
We will be highlighting for you our Advisor trip to St. George University in Grenada. Grenada is a Caribbean island in the West Indies. Our visit was focused on their School of Medicine and School of Veterinary Medicine. We will share with you some of the highlights we learned about the University and from our time on the island.
1. We were first schooled in how to properly pronounce the island, it is Grenada, not NAIDA. Grenada is a developing country, the average annual income is $9,340 US dollars. The official language is English.
2. St. George University is considered as one of the Big 4 Caribbean medical schools. These are international schools that are seen as being at the top of the pack because of having higher USMLE pass rates and strong residency match rates. We heard from faculty and staff about how the curriculum was structures and the supports that were in place to help students be successful. With a MD incoming class of 600+ students faculty and administrators spoke about breaking down the large class into small groups in order to into build in support systems for the large class sizes.
The USMLR Step 1 pass rate for St. George University is 89% for first-time test-takers over the last five years.

3. For year one and two students are taking their course work at St. George University. During Year 3 and Year 4 (Clinical Training) happens at SGU’s 70 affiliated hospitals and clinics across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Grenada.
4. Residency matching is another thing that is looked at closely when considering attending an international medical program.
Over the past 5-year St. George University has a 95 % residency placement rate.
The majority of graduates from SGU have residency placements in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine.
In 2022 the US Residency Placement by specialty at SGU, included 4 top areas:
Internal medicine 36%
Family Medicine 22%
Emergency Medicine 12%
Pediatric Medicine 10%
American graduates from U.S. allopathic institutions make up more than 90 percent of the residency programs for neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery, otolaryngology, and thoracic surgery. These are the most competitive residencies and someone at SGU can get those residencies, but they are more of the exception at 1% of the residency placements.

Medical Cannabis Director Chris Tholkes, Minnesota Department of Health
In episode 55 Chris Tholkes, Director of the Office of Medical Cannabis at the Minnesota Department of Health. Chris earned her Bachelor of Science in Community Health from Minnesota State Moorhead and her Masters of Public Administration from Hamline University. Chris has an extensive background working for the MN Department of Health beginning in 2009, so for the past 14 years has held a variety of positions focused on improving population and community health. Her role as the Director of the Medical Cannabis program is one where she is setting the rules and policies. Cannabis is still illegal at the federal government level so at the state level they are creating their own regulations and policies. Minnesota is a leader on researching medical cannabis effectiveness with requiring a patient self-evaluation prior to meeting with a Pharmacist (Pharm-D) at a medical cannabis dispensary.

Dr. Travis McKenzie specializes in Endocrine and Metabolic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He shares his path starting from growing up in Alaska to attending Gustavus, and then medical school at Tufts University, residency in surgery at the Mayo Clinic and two one year fellowships to finish off his surgery training. These three students have been active participants in our volunteer programs. Great way to learn more about each of the programs, what skills you will gain and ways for you to give back. The three featured programs:
Mayo Clinic Caring Hands Program: Caring Hands Service Summary: Massage therapy has shown to aid in addressing pain, distress, fatigue, anxiety, stress and muscular discomfort in patients with various types of disease. Hand massage is simple, comforting and less time consuming than a standard massage session. Because of its shorter duration, hand massage is an ideal intervention in a busy hospital and clinical settings. Volunteers provide 10 -15 minute hand massages. The Gustavus Caring Hands volunteers provide a non-therapeutic, light, gentle and slow hand massage to patients, caregivers and/or family members.
Ecumen Hospice Program: As a volunteer, you are an important part of our multi- disciplinary team, offering comfort, support, friendship and presence to our patients and their families at an important stage of life. A Companion volunteer provides a personal interaction, comforting presence, and small moments of joy. Companions can also offer caregiver respite and/or practical help around the home.
Parkinson's Exercise Class and Parkinson's Kicking Boxing Class:
Big for Life LSVT BIG® Certified clinician. LSVT is an innovative and CLINICALLY PROVEN method for improving communication and movement in individuals with Parkinson’s disease with application to other neurological conditions.
Rock Steady Boxing is an exercise program specifically designed for men and women at all stages of Parkinson's to manage their symptoms through exercise. Several medical studies on exercise and Parkinson’s have concluded that forced intense exercise can slow the progression of Parkinson’s. In other words, when exercise is done at a volunteer rate, there is less benefit than when exercise is done that pushes or forces someone out of their comfort zone.

The University of Minnesota’s Occupational Therapy (OT) program is the only public doctoral‐level OT program in Minnesota and one of the oldest OT programs in the United States. Our graduates use a science-driven, evidence-based approach to help children and adults who have physical, cognitive, emotional, social or environmental impairments participate in activities that they value, achieve life goals, and live as meaningfully as possible.
The mission of the University of Minnesota Occupational Therapy Program (OT) is to educate leaders in occupational therapy through innovative experience-based education and research to advance the science of OT, and foster the health and quality of life of individuals, communities, and societies. We value empathy, expertise, teamwork, results, and leadership.
Our program offers a 37 month, 116 credit, graduate-level professional program completed over nine semesters. Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination for the Occupational Therapist, administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this examination, the graduate will be an occupational therapist, registered (OTR).
Neurosurgeon Dr. Bergman
In episode 50 we speak with Chief of Neurosurgery Dr. Thomas Bergman.
Dr. Bergman works at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN which is a Level I Trauma Center. HCMC is Minnesota's largest emergency department and busiest trauma center. Dr. Bergman brings to our podcast a wealth of knowledge about what a day in the life is like as a neurosurgeon and also highlights the very unique Career Exploration partnership program Gustavus has with his neurosurgery team during the January Interim.
Dr. Bergman attended Princeton University for his undergraduate degree, University of Minnesota for Medical School and completed his residency in Neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota. He shares with us about growing up in Duluth, his love of the outdoors and his love of Hockey. He attended Princeton to play Hockey and it was there that he met his future wife ON THE VERY FIRST DAY our current college president, President Becky Bergman.
We found Dr. Bergman to be both passionate and humble about his work. Dr. Bergman has been an incredible mentor and resource for our Gustavus pre-health students. And we know that his welcoming spirit will shine through to all of you in this very special 50 episode of our podcast.

University of North Dakota School of Medicine (MD) & Health Sciences
In episode 49, we speak with admission officer Alyssa Montgomery from UND School of Medicine about UND as a state sponsored medical school and what in means for a Minnesota resident to have strong ties to the state. We also talk about the unique skill set that UND admission committee is looking for to serve the patients and population in rural and Native American communities in North Dakota.
One of the unique features of UND is it does not have any prerequisite required courses! But...it does still require the MCAT. The interview process becomes very important to the evaluation process and Montgomery shares about their interview process and what a standout applicant looks like. Besides UND being ranked #1 in the nation for graduating American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) physicians, there are many other unique highlights shared about the School of Medicine in this podcast. Gustavus is in the final stages of accreditation for the first ever Master's degree program in college history, a Master's in Athletic Training. This Master's will be is a two year degree program and there are two tracks to earn the degree. The facilities at Gustavus are second to none with the renovation of Lund Center and the creation of new AT space and the Noble Hall of Science. Dobbs v. Jackson Dr. Jill Locke
In Episode 45 we speak with Gustavus professor Dr. Locke about Abortion Rights after Dobbs v. Jackson. We talk through the history of Roe vs. Wade decision up to the Dobbs v. Jackson decision. Abortion has long been a controversial topic and people are typically divided into two parties. Pro-choice, abortion is a woman’s constitutional right and favor lifting limitations and increasing access to safe and legal abortions. Pro-life, abortion is immoral/anti-abortion, favor laws that restrict or limit access to abortion. Following, Dobbs v. Jackson the legal conflict over abortion has now been forwarded to the states to decide upon, with some states attempting to outlaw it while others are working to protect it. This is a complicated and controversial topic, and we hope you can gain clarity on what the implications of this decision is on you as a future healthcare provider. Dr. Locke gives the advice of getting involved by, bloom where you are planted, which we think is great advice.

We spoke to volunteers Judy Schultz and Edi Thorstensson, both retired longtime Gustavus employees about the organization Healthcare for All Minnesota, that advocates for universal single payer for Minnesota - hoping it would spread to all the U.S. but at least to get a better way to organize healthcare in our state.

Before joining the clinic, Dr. Dee was a swine practitioner in Morris, Minnesota for 12 years and for the last 12 years a professor at the University of Minnesota where he conducted research in the areas of PRRSV transmission and biosecurity. Currently he serves as Director of Research for Pipestone Applied Research conducting research in the areas of viral transport and transmission in feed, feed biosecurity, and antimicrobial resistance at the level of the swine farm. Scott, his wife, Lisa and their two children, Nicholas and Ellen, live in Alexandria, MN.

Genetic Counseling Hannah Banks
In episode 41 we talk with Hannah Banks, about Genetic Counseling. Hannah is a recent college graduate 2020, and is currently attending The Ohio State University, in Columbus Ohio. She shares about her path to becoming a Genetic Counselor (GC), how she got experience in the field, and typical prerequisite courses required for admission. The application process and timeline is unique for Genetic Counseling and Hannah clearly explains the process and how the MATCH process works. Nobel Conference 58 (2022):Mental Health (In)Equity and Young People September 28-29(NOTE: Wednesday and Thursday!) Prioritizing the mental health concerns of young people has become essential amid times of global pandemic, racism, sexism, ableism, social unrest, climate change, and political upheaval. These social inequities limit our ability to promote resilience in the mental health of adolescents and young adults, especially those from marginalized communities. Young people often experience little control over their wellbeing, are affected by the decisions of parents, schools and society, and in these technology-driven times are vulnerable to the negative side effects of social media and information overload. In considering how to eradicate inequities and promote mental health, technology becomes central in how it both aids and hinders our modern existence, in the U.S. and around the world. Mayo Clinic Caring Hands Volunteer Program
Today in episode 35, we speak with Linda McDonald, Volunteer Service Coordinator at the Mayo Clinic in Mankato. After a three year pause due to COVID, we are very excited to announce that our volunteer program Caring Hands is back. This program is a partnership with Gustavus and the Mayo Clinic where are Gustavus pre-health student volunteers provide are trained to provide a hand massage to patients, caregivers and/or family members. The primary role of the Caring Hands volunteer is to improve the patient experience.
Our student volunteers participating in the past found the Caring Hands program to be very rewarding specifically because of the patient interaction they were able to have during each shift. Episode 34 we welcome TWO guests Anna Cruz, Des Moines University Recruitment and Admissions Specialist and Talon Aitken, current D.O. student attending Des Moines. For this episode we focused on the Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) programs at Des Moines. There are currently 9 health professions programs at the University and they will be adding OT, so soon there will be ten programs. They offer both Masters and Doctoral level programs. We had the opportunity to hear about what they both thought were the top strengths of a Des Moines University education.
Another highlight for me was them explaining about both the many similarities of MD and DO and also what makes DO unique. They walked us through (OMM) Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine training and what that training looks like in school and in practice.

Amy Pehrson, Gustavus Habitat for Humanity trips
In episode #33 we talk with Amy Pehrson, Director of Community Engagement Center at Gustavus. Amy directs the 10 community service programs at Gustavus and our focus for this podcast was the Habitat for Humanity program. Over the years we have talk with many pre-health students that have participated in this program and some of the take-aways are they have a more clear understanding of affordable housing challenges, learn new building skills, meet new friends and have a fun experience. There are two opportunities for participating in the Habitat program, the Fall Break Home Building Trip (Bemidji Fall 2021) and the Alternative Spring Break Home Building Trip (TX,CO,VA,MD sites 2022). Every spring break, Gustavus sends approximately 50 to 100 students to Habitat for Humanity affiliate sites to participate in the Collegiate Challenge, an alternative break program. Heidi Meyer Associate Professor
Episode #29 We have the privilege of interviewing Heidi Meyer. Heidi joined the Gustavus Nursing Program as faculty in February 2008. As a 1998 Gustavus nursing alum, Heidi is back at Gustavus doing what she hoped of doing as a student back in the mid to late 1990's. After graduating from Gustavus in 1998, Heidi worked in various clinical settings, including Oncology, Med/Surg, Home Health, and Public Health. She returned to Minnesota State University, Mankato to pursue her degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner. After she completed her degree, she began teaching in an ADN program in the Twin Cities and taught there for two years before coming to Gustavus. Heidi teaches Fundamentals of Nursing and Principles of Clinical Pharmacology in the Junior level of the program and Transitions to Professional Practice in the Senior level of the program. She recently received her PhD from South Dakota State University. Her dissertation research was entitled Understanding Emotional Intelligence and Its Relationship to Clinical Reasoning in Nursing Students: A Mixed Methods Study.

Deb Mattson, DPT @ River's Edge Hospital and Clinic
In episode #28 we talk with Deb Mattson who is the lead physical therapist at River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic. She is a certified LSVT/BIG clinician and has special interest in working with patients with Parkinson’s Disease, returning to sport activity after a knee, ankle or shoulder injury/surgery, shoulder rehabilitation, sacroiliac dysfunction and vestibular rehabilitation. Deb Mattson has been with River's Edge Hospital and Clinic in Saint Peter for 14 years and reamin incredibly passionate about her job.
Gustavus has a volunteer program partnership with River's Edge for pre-OT and pre-PT students in the Parkinson exercise classes that Deb teaches. And coming soon volunteer opportunities in the Rock Steady Boxing class. Currently both volunteer programs are paused because of COVID.

Rock Steady Boxing is an exercise program specifically designed for men and women at all stages of Parkinson’s manage their symptoms through exercise. Several medical studies on exercise and Parkinson’s have concluded that forced intense exercise can slow the progression of Parkinson’s. In other words, when exercise is done at a volunteer rate, there is less benefit than when exercise is done that pushes or forces someone out of their comfort zone. Tracie Lafata, Deb Mattson and Nicole Boelter are all certified Rock Steady Boxing Coaches at River’s Edge Hospital.
Dr. Mark Taylor, MD -Mankato Clinic
Episode #27 we welcomed Dr. Mark Taylor, M.D., Gustavus Class fo 1978. Dr. Taylor specialized in obstetrics and gynecology and has been with the Mankato Clinic for the entirety career. Dr. Taylor is a well loved Dr. and has strong ties to the Mankato/St. Peter area. He values the relationships he has with his patients. He enjoys being stopped in the grocery store by patients who just want to say hello or introduce him to their child that he delivered three weeks or three decades ago. He appreciates the bond that is created with his patients that has allowed him to share many laughs, hugs and, on occasion, a few tears.
“My decision to become an OB/GYN physician occurred on the day I first saw a delivery as a second year medical student. Nothing came even close to that in capturing why I wanted to become a physician. Upon reflection, I absolutely made the correct decision. I enjoy what I do as much, or more, today as I did 30 years ago.”
Along with being a physician at the Mankato Clinic, Dr. Taylor is an avid duck and pheasant hunter as well as a water skier, and he spends as much time as possible pursuing those activities. He says that he “married well” and spending time with his wife, Rhonda, and their extended family (given that they are both from Mankato it is a sizable group) trumps all.
“It is humbling that women choose me to care for them during some of the most important times in their lives. In return I hope that I am successful in conveying to them that I appreciate their confidence in me, that I truly care about them and I will do my best.”
Alaska Pre-Medicine *NEW* January Interim site
January 2022 NEW January Career Exploration opportunity for pre-health students at Capstone Clinic, Alaska. The experience is based out of Wasilla/Palmer, Alaska but students traveled to additional clinic sites in Anchorage, Eagle River and Kenai. Family medicine as well as a variety of specialty areas in medicine are shadowed during the 17 day January Interim.
This is a funded opportunity through the Gustavus Career Development Office and the Office of Health Professions. We anticipate this being offered again for the next year January 2023.

In episode #24 we met with Dr. Scott J. Luhmann, M.D., Gustavus Class of 1986. Dr. Luhmann specializes in pediatric and adolescent orthopaedic surgery and is the chief of staff at Shriners Hospital for Children. He is a professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri and serves as the Fellowship Director for Pediatric. Dr. Luhmann shared with us his path to medical school and how he made his decision to become an orthopedic surgeon. We know you will be inspired by Dr. Luhmann's passion for helping others through his work as a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon.

SURF Mayo Clinic Gilyard Peterson Scholarship
We had the amazing opportunity to talk with Dr. Bruce Horazdovsky. Dr. Horazdovsky is the Director of the Mayo SURF program. SURF stands for summer undergraduate research fellowship.

New this year for Gustavus students is the Gilyard Peterson Scholarship that will be awarded to fund students selected for the SURF program at the Mayo Clinic. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the Mayo Clinic Scholarship OpportunitySURF program dates: Tuesday, May 31, 2022 through Friday, Aug. 5, 2022
SURF Admission Requirements: You can apply for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) if you:
- Have completed two or three years at a U.S. college or university at the time the SURF program begins
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale)
- Are seriously considering a biomedical research career as a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D.
Gilyard Peterson Scholarship: We are excited to announce that Gustavus has partnered with the Mayo Clinic thanks to a generous donor to offer the Gilyard Peterson Scholarship. This scholarship will provide funding to selected students to participate in the Mayo Clinic SURF program.

Optometry, Jordyn Olson-Merrick, '21
Jordyn Olson-Merrick class of 2021 is in her first year of Optometry school at Pacific University College of Optometry, in Forest Grove, OR. She joined us and shared her path to Optometry and highlighted the career as a whole.
What Optometrists DoOptometrists diagnose and treat visual problems and manage diseases, injuries, and other disorders of the eyes.
Work EnvironmentMost optometrists work in stand-alone offices of optometry. Optometrists may also work in doctors’ offices and optical goods stores, and some are self-employed. Most work full time, and some work evenings and weekends to accommodate patients’ needs.
How to Become an OptometristOptometrists must complete a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree program and obtain a license to practice in a particular state. O.D. programs take 4 years to complete, and most students have a bachelor’s degree before entering such a program.
PayThe median annual wage for optometrists was $118,050 in May 2020.
Job OutlookEmployment of optometrists is projected to grow 9 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations.

The Peer Assistants (PAs) are an integral part of the GustieWELL Office and mission. This selected group of elite student leaders are dedicated to promoting a culture of well-being by providing quality wellness education and resources that support and enhance the lifestyles of our students. Our focus areas include: Chemical Health, Mental Health & Stress Management, Healthy Relationships, Sleep, and Nutrition & Physical Activity.
The PAs support these efforts to equip students with health-related knowledge by providing educational programs/workshops, awareness campaigns, social activities, and assisting students in accessing resources.

Nurse to Hospital CEO, Paula Meskan
Paula Meskan | CEO, Acting CFO, MA, RN, CNEP
In March 2021, Paula Meskan was named the CEO of River’s Edge Hospital and Clinic in St. Peter, MN. Meskan earned her four-year Bachelor of Nursing degree from the College of St. Catherine. Her first job after graduation was working as the lead RN at Faribault Regional Treatment Center. Following that she worked as a nurse at a group home and after a few years transitioned to a labor, delivery, and pediatric nurse at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato. She became the Director of Women's and Children's Services at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital, Mankato and served in that role for six years prior to being hired in 2009 as the Chief Nursing Officer at River's Edge Hospital & Clinic. In 2020, Meskan was named the interim Chief Executive Officer for 7 months prior to being hired in March 2021 as River's Edge Hospitals Chief Executive Officer.
January Interim Career Exploration, Emily Kratz, '22
In our #19 episode we talk with Senior Emily Kratz (Class of 2022). Emily is a Biology major, the captain of the golf team AND the co-president of the pre-dental club. We focused on the January Interim Career Exploration and the walked through the process of setting up an experience or applying for one of the opportunities with our partner sites. As a sophomore, Emily participated in the Gustavus January Interim Career Exploration program exploring the dental profession. She shares her experience at the four different local sites she had the opportunity to shadow and how it helped her to confirm her dental career path.
