Ep 62 How CRAFT and Coaching Transform Relationships With Guests Beth Syverson and Joey Nakao
Beth, Joey, and Heather talk about how CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) and coaching transformed their family so you can hear real-life examples of how this work can change your family too. The highlights of this episode are hearing how Joey feels about the changes he made and how Beth's mindset has shifted about Joey's substance use and the peace of mind she creates for herself.  Joey doesn't know how CRAFT or coaching works, but he knows how it feels to him. That's a beautiful testament to how much impact and influence you can have as a parent. Some of the main topics discussed: How taking the focus off your child and putting it on yourself impacts your family's experience of your child's addiction. It's important to redefine parenting when your child is struggling with addiction - what worked before will no longer work. Connection is the goal instead of sobriety.  Episodes to listen to next: Ep 40 Supporting your child's healing journey with Guests Beth Syverson, Joey Nakao, and Jan Mabie From Safe Home Podcast Ep 22 What if you didn't have a child struggling with addiction? EP 61 A Mother's Search For Peace With Guest Susan Lynch
Heather Interviews author Susan Lynch. Her memoir Life After Kevin A Mother's Search for Peace and the Golden Retrievers that Led the Way is a story about finding meaning when life challenges you in the hardest ways, healing through community, spiritual connection, and the transformation that comes from learning how to sit with intensely painful emotions to gain answers and clarity. Susan’s son Kevin died from multiple drug intoxication in 2015. She kept the cause of his death a secret for 2 years because of shame and stigma. Shame separates us from community and connection.  It also keeps us from seeing that we need help.  3 Things you'll learn in this episode: How Shame kept Susan silent and the impact it had on her grief How Susan's dogs helped her heal Connecting with and receiving guidance from someone that has died If you would like to pre-order Susan's book use this link www.susan-lynch.com/book-order. EP 60 Sobriety Can't Be Your Only Measure For Success
Do you feel like you're failing because your child isn't sober yet? Supporting your child through their addiction is a marathon, not a sprint. The belief that "it's not working" can be very painful and cause you a lot of frustration. It can also make it harder for you to regulate your emotions around your child. When you have other measures for success on your journey, then you create rewards for yourself for the changes you're making and the tools you're learning and using. Those rewards give you the momentum you need to keep moving forward. They also make it easier for you to connect with your child.  Episodes to Listen to next: Ep 5 Control - Why You Do it and How To Stop Ep 54 Harm Reduction with guest Lara Okoloko, LICSW EP 43 Why You Feel Rejected If this podcast has helped you, please help Heather reach other parents by leaving a review. EP 56 Rehab Expectations VS Reality With Guest Kelly Hatcher from New Day Family Recovery
Heather and returning guest Kelly Hatcher talk about what it was like when their kids went to rehab. They both experienced a major gap between their expectations about what rehab and sobriety would be like vs reality. Addiction and recovery are complex. Rehab and sobriety are stops on a lifetime journey. They are not destinations. Heather and Kelly hope that that by sharing their experience it will make rehab and sobriety easier for you and help you support your child as well. 3 things you’ll take away from the episode: The unrealistic expectations Heather and Kelly had before their kids went to rehab (maybe you have the same expectations) Their reality check – what the experience was really like Heather & Kelly’s advice for you based on their experiences with multiple rehabs Episodes to Listen to next: Episode #34 What To Do When You’re In A Funk (guest Kelly Hatcher) Episode #52 Why Parents Need Recovery Too Episode #30 Celebrating Your Life In The Middle of Addiction (guest Kelly Hatcher) Kelly Hatcher’s Website: https://newdayfamilyrecovery.com/ If his podcast has helped you, please help Heather reach other parents by leaving a review. EP 55 90 Seconds To A Life You Love With Dr. Joan Rosenberg
When you're supporting your child through addiction, there are many uncomfortable and even painful experiences. The more capacity you have to tolerate emotional pain, the more capable and confident you feel about yourself and your ability to support your child. A willingness to learn from any experience, openness to change, and the capacity to express unpleasant feelings leads to emotional strength and resilience. Being able to experience your own emotional pain also makes it easier for you to tolerate the discomfort of your child's emotional pain as well. It also makes it easier to engage in difficult conversations.  Emotional mastery is an essential skill to help you through your journey with your child's addiction.   Topics Discussed In This Episode:  How emotions only last 90 seconds  Why some emotions seem to last longer than 90 seconds  How allowing and feeling your unpleasant emotions leads to a life you love  Why we use distractions to avoid feelings  Dr. Joan Rosenberg’s website  Buy 90 Seconds To A Life You Love  Episodes to listen to next:  Episode 16 Self Coaching Model  Episode 17 Processing Feelings = High Quality of Life  Episode 18 Understanding Buffering Can Help You Understand Addiction  If his podcast has helped you, please help me reach other parents by leaving a review. Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use. Harm reduction is critical to keeping people who use drugs alive and as healthy as possible.  Some of the topics discussed in this episode: The 8 principles of harm reduction Examples of harm reduction strategies for family members How harm reduction helps with stigma Boundaries Links from this episode: Lara Okolo's Website Article by Pat Denning about Harm Reduction in The Journal of Clinical Psychology The National Harm Reduction Coalition Episodes to listen to next: Episode 35 Releasing Judgement Episode 36 What to do about all the lies If this podcast has helped you, please help me reach other parents by leaving a review. Ep 53 The Lie That We Can Only Help Ourselves
How many times have you heard you can only help yourself? It's critical to help yourself, but it's not the only thing you can do. You can invite change in your child and create space for them to decide they want to change. We're constantly told that our kids won't change unless they want to, but we're rarely told that we can create favorable conditions for them to want to change. You can help your child. EP 52 Why Parents Need Recovery Too
This episode is an updated excerpt from episode 45 which is the first episode that I made after my daughter Helanna died from fentanyl poisoning. Episode 45 started off very emotional. I don’t want the really important message I had later in that episode to get lost in the heavy emotions.  I updated and re-recorded three critical messages from that episode:  Why we all need our own recovery  Why you need community as you go through your child’s addiction and recovery  Connecting to your child through love instead of guilt, shame, or anger  The episode I recommend next:  Episode #37 Post Traumatic Growth  Links that were mentioned in this episode:  The Safe Home Families Podcast guest episode #40  Custom Music by Joey Nakao  If this podcast has helped you please help me reach other parents and leave a review. EP 51 How To Stop Fixing Your Child And Start Connecting With Them
We're always dancing with the fine line between help and support that comes from a place of love and fixing that comes from a place of fear. Fear can show up in such sneaky ways that you don't realize you're trying to fix your child again.  The way out of that is going to the "safe zone" of focusing on connection. In this episode I give you 4 ways to identify that you're in fear and 3 ways to stop fixing and start connecting again. Ep 50 Three Things I Wish I Did Differently Last Year
Even I struggle with fears of enabling. For many years I was a student of the tough love approach, trying to control, and beliefs that didn’t serve me about addiction. No matter how much time I put into creating beliefs that serve me and learning healthy ways to support Helanna, the fear of enabling rather than helping her was always there. As the result of much introspection about where things went wrong and insight from Helanna’s journal, I want to share 3 things I wish I did differently last year and why I wish I had done them differently. This is not about blame. It’s about being open minded and learning from the past. I went into this episode with intention and 3 important factors: 1. Tons of self compassion 2. Knowledge that I could have done all three of those things differently and Helanna still could have died 3. Hope that sharing my experience will make it easier for you to make the best possible decision for your family when faced with similar situations I can’t change what happened, but I can use it to give you perspective in the tremendously difficult area of navigating your child’s addiction. Ep 48 The Struggle is Real -How To Do It Well
How you show up for yourself determines how you experience your child's addiction. We aren't wired to be happy all the time. Struggling is inevitable and it's normal. There's wisdom in all our emotions, even the most difficult ones. We need to honor all the feelings that our life circumstances are triggering. Struggling well gives us new perspective so we don't get stuck in apathy. When we embrace the growth and change that our struggle is showing us we can grow and move forward through trying and even traumatic events.    Guest Andrea Seydel and I  discussed: Honoring where you are in your individual journey Struggling well looks different at different times in your life How we struggle well and build resilience in the process The 5 steps to struggling well What to listen to next: Episode 37 Post Traumatic Growth  Episode 38 How to Have Self Compassion Episode 06 Your Words Create Your Quality of Life  Watch the YouTube video of the interview for episode 48 Watch the YouTube Video Andrea and I made last year about struggling well  If you want coaching about your child's addiction or anything else Sign up for a 45 minute $17 call with me using the link below https://heatherrosscoachingcalendar.as.me/SampleSession For additional resources: Sign up for my free guide 3 Steps To Stay Sane When Your Child Is Struggling with Addiction - How to Move Forward With Confidence TODAY http://heatherrosscoaching.com/3-simple-steps/ Follow me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/heatherrosscoaching Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/heatherrosscoaching/ Join the free Facebook group for parents who are struggling with a child's addiction Andrea Seydel is the Author of the book and host of the podcast Saving You Is Killing Me We Loving Someone With An Addiction. Ep 47 How Parents Who Heal Help Their Children In The Process
Healing starts for us when we connect with other parents like us to hear their stories and share our experiences.  When we do that we're no longer alone on this journey. Meeting and engaging with other parents gives us access to insights and resources we need. EP 46 Grief Provides Healing For All Losses, Not Just Death With Guest Julie Cluff
There’s a gap between what we expect in life and what we’re experiencing. In that gap is a loss. As parents we have hope and expectations. We expect a fulfilling relationship with our kids, family gatherings, milestones like prom and college, and we expect being a parent to feel good.  When addiction shows up we experience the painful gap between what we expect and our reality. We have to grieve those losses so we can let go of what we expected. We can stop wishing the past were different and focus on what we can intentionally create in the future. In this episode Grief coach Julie Cluff and I discuss: · Discounting and comparing losses · We should only compare the impact of our own losses · What misplaced guilt is and how it affects you · Finding forgiveness in grief · Our experiences can be hard and also possible to move through · We can grieve gently · The only way to heal from trauma is to choose the empowerment of change · You don’t have to carry grief the rest of your life If you want coaching about your child's addiction or anything else Sign up for a 45 minute $17 call with me using the link below https://heatherrosscoachingcalendar.as.me/SampleSession For additional resources: Sign up for my free guide 3 Steps To Stay Sane When Your Child Is Struggling with Addiction - How to Move Forward With Confidence TODAY http://heatherrosscoaching.com/3-simple-steps/ Follow me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/heatherrosscoaching Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/heatherrosscoaching/ Link to my free Facebook group for parents who are struggling with a child's addiction https://www.facebook.com/groups/434135437166166/?ref=share Contact Julie Cluff: website: buildalifeafterloss.com free webinar: buildalifeafterloss.com/gift facebook: Build a Life After Loss with Julie Cluff https://www.facebook.com/buildalifeafterloss instagram: @buildalifeafterloss

EP 45 Honoring Helanna & How I'm Working Through My Grief
This is the hardest episode I've ever recorded and also the most important episode I ever recorded. There's no way I can move forward helping other parents without stopping to honor Helanna's life and what her time on this earth gave to me. This podcast wouldn't exist without her. I wouldn't be who I am today without her. The day that Helanna died I started wondering if I could continue my work helping other parents with their child’s addiction. I didn’t know if I could face it anymore. I wanted to hear Helanna’s voice and be close to her somehow, so I listened to the podcast episodes she was on & I realized that it was more important than ever for me to keep doing this work. Having a child struggling with addiction is the hardest thing some parents will ever face. Until I lost Helanna to fentanyl poisoning, her addiction has had more of a long-lasting impact on my life more than anything else. So many parents are struggling alone and in silence because of shame and the stigma that goes with addiction. There’s no way that I can step aside and not continue helping those parents. Right now, that’s what is keeping me motivated to live a life that doesn’t include my daughter. In this episode I share some of the things that I learned while dealing with her addiction and how they’re helping with my grief as well: · Why we all need our own recovery & how mine saved me from regret in my last conversations with my daughter · Why you shouldn't carry the pain of your child's addiction alone - Connection is a survival skill for us parents as much as it is for our kids · Why we need to build the skillset to have difficult conversations with our kids about their addiction & how that's helped me · Connecting to your child through LOVE instead of guilt, shame, or anger Link to the episode that explains the model: https://anchor.fm/heather-ross9/episodes/Episode-16-The-Self-Coaching-Model-eref06 If you want coaching about your child's addiction or anything else Sign up for a 45 minute $17 call with me using the link below https://heatherrosscoachingcalendar.as.me/SampleSession For additional resources: Sign up for my free guide 3 Steps To Stay Sane When Your Child Is Struggling with Addiction - How to Move Forward With Confidence TODAY http://heatherrosscoaching.com/3-simple-steps/ Follow me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/heatherrosscoaching Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/heatherrosscoaching/ Link to my free Facebook group for parents who are struggling with a child's addiction https://www.facebook.com/groups/434135437166166/?ref=share

BONUS One Poisonous Thought Can Affect All Areas of Your Life
Your thoughts create your reality. One poisonous thought can cause you a lot of unnecessary pain.  It can be the difference between discomfort and great suffering.  Recently I realized I had one thought about my future that was draining my creativity, making me feel like I had a limited time to enjoy myself, and it was setting me up to create a bad experience when I have the ability to create a really positive experience.  Link to the episode that explains the model: https://anchor.fm/heather-ross9/episodes/Episode-16-The-Self-Coaching-Model-eref06 If you want coaching about your child's addiction or anything else Sign up for a 45 minute $17 call with me using the link below https://heatherrosscoachingcalendar.as.me/SampleSession For additional resources: Sign up for my free guide 3 Steps To Stay Sane When Your Child Is Struggling with Addiction - How to Move Forward With Confidence TODAY http://heatherrosscoaching.com/3-simple-steps/ Follow me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/heatherrosscoaching Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/heatherrosscoaching/ Link to my free Facebook group for parents who are struggling with a child's addiction https://www.facebook.com/groups/434135437166166/?ref=share

EP 44 Interview With My Daughter Helanna Johnson- Part 2
We had some great questions come up after my first interview with Helanna (episode 41) so did a second interview.  We discussed: Suboxone - how it helped - what she wishes she knew before she started using it - why she tapered off it. How I handled her getting off suboxone. Fears about losing her sobriety. What her brain says about why being sober won't work. How she knew she would use drugs from a young age. Why she didn't trust me for a long time and what made her start trusting me again. What made her decide to go to sober living this time when she wouldn't go other times. How a shift in perspective about parenting can help your child and your relationship with them.  If you want coaching about your child's addiction or anything else Sign up for a 45 minute $17 call with me using the link below https://heatherrosscoachingcalendar.as.me/SampleSession For additional resources: Sign up for my free guide 3 Steps To Stay Sane When Your Child Is Struggling with Addiction - How to Move Forward With Confidence TODAY http://heatherrosscoaching.com/3-simple-steps/ Follow me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/heatherrosscoaching Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/heatherrosscoaching/ Link to my free Facebook group for parents who are struggling with a child's addiction https://www.facebook.com/groups/434135437166166/?ref=share

EP 43 Why You Feel Rejected
Healing your own emotional wounds is where the magic is when it comes to your child’s addiction. We’re all responsible for our own healing just like we want our kids to be. When you’re reactive no matter how hard you try not to be, then your child is triggering an emotional wound. The worst part about emotional wounds is we recreate them over and over again with our perception. We all want love, acceptance, and connection but the rejection wound keeps us from getting it. Today I give you 3 steps to heal the rejection wound.  Episodes I mention: https://anchor.fm/heather-ross9/episodes/Episode-16-The-Self-Coaching-Model-eref06 https://anchor.fm/heather-ross9/episodes/Episode-2-How-To-Connect-With-Your-Child-Thats-Struggling-With-Addiction-en5fgd https://anchor.fm/heather-ross9/episodes/Episode-24-Mastering-Your-Response-To-Your-Childs-Addiction-evtoh7 If you want coaching about your child's addiction or anything else Sign up for a 45 minute $17 call with me using the link below https://heatherrosscoachingcalendar.as.me/SampleSession For additional resources: Sign up for my free guide 3 Steps To Stay Sane When Your Child Is Struggling with Addiction - How to Move Forward With Confidence TODAY http://heatherrosscoaching.com/3-simple-steps/ Follow me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/heatherrosscoaching Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/heatherrosscoaching/ Link to my free Facebook group for parents who are struggling with a child's addiction https://www.facebook.com/groups/434135437166166/?ref=share

Episode 41 Interview With My Daughter Helanna Johnson Part 1
This week I got to interview my daughter.  You've been hearing my experience of her addiction so I think that it's important to hear what her experience was like. Some of the things we talked about:  · What was it like when I looked to you to be ok to make me feel better instead of me being stable for you? · What else did I do that wasn’t helpful to you? · What did I do that was helpful to you? · Is there anything I could have done differently to help you not struggle with addiction? · What did you get out of using? · What made you want to get sober? · What has relapsing taught you? · What makes you feel supported in sobriety? I learned a few new things and had some realizations while listening to her insight and I ended up sharing some things I've never shared before. Episode 37 Post Traumatic Growth
Post traumatic growth is the positive changes that are experienced after a major life crisis or traumatic event. Every situation has good and bad in it though.  You've certainly experienced the bad, today I would like to open your mind to the good possibilities. I wasn't looking for growth when I found it, I was looking for relief from my suffering.  That relief came from tremendous growth and change. Episode 27 Approaching Addiction With Love
When I was struggling the most with my daughter's addiction it was because I believed all the messaging that said if my daughter was mad at me I was probably doing the right thing.  Approaching my daughter's addiction with love was the only thing that felt right to me, but I didn't know how to do it. I didn't know that a shift in my belief about love would give more more power and leverage than anything else I had tried. Episode 8 Life is 50/50
Most of us have this idea that we should feel positive emotion all the time, or that we shouldn’t feel negative emotion. We aren't supposed to be happy 100% of the time. The tools I share are meant to help you keep that 50/50 balance because when you're dealing with a child's addiction it's easy to get stuck in the negative 50. Negative emotions have a purpose. Each one is bringing you an important message. When you know what your negative emotions are trying to tell you, then you can work through them instead of trying to avoid them or get stuck in them. Episode 3 What to do When You're Paralyzed With Fear That Your Child Will Over Dose
How often do you send a text to your addicted child and breathe a sigh of relief because the text went through, or look on social media to see if they’ve been active, or do a drive by just so you can have a little peace of mind? That fear of all the things that can wrong can rule your life.  You get stuck with horrible images and thoughts about them over dosing and no one being there to help them. You brain gets stuck looping through all the worst-case scenarios. You live your worst fear day in and day out, losing sleep, and wondering how the hell all this happened in the first place. When you have an addicted child you can’t rely on external circumstances to relieve your worry and fear. You have to develop the skillset to provide your own relief.
