By Hellenic Innovation Network

Hellenic Innovation Network, with the support of the Greek Consulate of Boston and MIT Enterprise Forum Greece, was created to empower technology-based startups from Greece and Cyprus with a bridge to the U.S. through pitching and networking opportunities. Our dedicated group from the tech startup ecosystems in Boston and Athens organizes events twice per year to educate the Greek diaspora about Greek startup activity, and to offer Greek entrepreneurs an opportunity to pitch and network in the US. Due to Covid-19 we are hosting a webcast series in order to keep our community connected!

Why Set up Shop in Greece?

Join us to hear an overview by Alex Patelis, Chief Economic Adviser to the Prime Minister of Greece, of incentives put in place by the Greek government to induce direct investment and startup activity in Greece. Our panelists, who represent companies in growth phase through large enterprise, will inquire about these changes and discuss their own experience setting up shop in Greece. Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation

A conversation about the Greek governmentโ€™s plans for digitization with Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister of State and Digital Governance, Hellenic Republic.

Minister Pierrakakis, a graduate of Harvard Kennedy School and MIT, is radically simplifying citizen interactions with the government, from birth through license, marriage and other life transitions, by streamlining access to this data and increasing its utility. The Greek government will issue by the end of 2021 a new digital identity card to allow citizens to access digital services with security, and Greece ranks second among EU member-states in bandwidth concession for 5G telecommunication network licenses.

The discussion will be moderated by Michalis Bletsas, Director of Computing at MIT Media Lab and introduced by Alexandra Papadopoulou, Ambassador of Greece to the United States.

Research Commercialization and Exit: The Story of Helicโ€™s acquisition by Ansys

Greece has pushed through the first wave of startups in IT, enabled by low barriers to entry, and now is shifting toward larger opportunities in deep tech. Commercializing university research offers the potential for greater returns, as demonstrated by top US universities, but the path is longer and less clear. Building a strong business from core technology is a massive challenge, and driving it to exit is even harder. Yorgos Koutsoyannopoulos, Co-Founder/Former CEO of Helic will discuss its formation out of the National Technical University of Athens to address the issue of ย electromagnetic crosstalk caused by closer proximity of high-frequency circuits. Vic Kulkarni, Vice President at Ansys, will discuss their reasons for acquiring Helic and expanding its research and development center in Athens, with a stated goal of increasing employment over 2-3 years from 50 to 200, mostly scientists and engineers.
