Episode 32 - The universe is in the correct place, we are aliving and wonderful!

From working at home and being nosey about people's backgrounds, to adding new words to the English language and connecting with others - it can only be the latest Hello You Podcast episode!

Nature and wonder feature heavily in this hour of frequently random chat. Men fall in ponds, cicadas sleep for a prime number of years and we talk about how a practice rooted in Aikido can enrich our worklives.

Shownotes and links are available (https://shownotes.helloyoupodcast.com) - so please pull up a comfy chair because the Salon is open!

Episode 30 - We're available and curious (researchers - we're here for you!)

Yes, dear listeners, it is indeed episode 30! While other podcasts may go back into their archives for moments of deep reflection, Louise & Neil shamelessly pitch for research funding to lick Glacier Mice to see if they taste like Glacier Mints, or to support the academic corpus with investigations into alcohol, music and synchrony.

It does make sense (in the madcap way that HYP always makes sense). And things that we deep dive into (when we're not finding ways to invest research grant funding) include:

  • Playlists, musical mediation of experience and moral values
  • Audience synchrony during classical music concerts
  • The mystery of Glacier Mice (the mystery isn't whether they taste of mint, but that is also an unknown)
  • Mice wearing VR headsets
  • And much, much more!

So, please, pull up a chair, pour something warming and join us on a laughter filled exploration of all that's interesting!

And don't forget - shownotes are available, with links, for your further HYP-ing pleasure - shownotes.helloyoupidcast.com!

Episode 29: System level levers and the individual 'shimmy'

Episode 29: System level levers and the individual 'shimmy'

In the brand shiny 29th episode, we start exactly how we end up going on: dancing joyfully between individual context and the bigger context, with an audio tour of Neil's 'biography shelf' which introduces the cat that came with a washing machine.

We'd love to share Episode 29 of Hello You Podcast with you. Come in, the Salon is open and you're very, very welcome! If you'd like a sneak peak, or want to explore the inspirations for this month's meanderings, we invite you to cast your eyes over the show notes here: https://helloyoupodcast.wordpress.com/2023/11/03/episode-29-system-level-levers-and-the-individual-shimmy/

Episode 25: Everything, everywhere, in 75 minutes flat

Welcome to HYP 25 (the quarter century being a milestone that we completely miss talking about...) - the Salon is open!

We dive into the cinematic marvel that is Everything, Everywhere All At Once, hurtling into language and the joys of untranslatable words. Louise drops a book recommendation, before we nuzzle up to linguistic taxonomy and its influence on reality, Algospeak and how violence is done to words. And yet, we revel in the changing nature of the words we use, whether as tools to create clarity or evade surveillance while in plain sight...

As is that wasn't enough, the conversation takes a turn into emotion at work, psychological safety and how clarity is both necessary and exposing for true leaders.

To round off, we sidle into RSS. Neil loves it, Louise thinks it's dark magic. But what say you, dear listeners?

75 minutes of pure Hello You Podcast joy await - so please, draw in your nearest & dearest, pour something nourishing and join us in a Salon of exploration in the unfurling experiment that is HYP!

June 2022: Disrupting wolves with bananas

Well hello! Pull up a comfy chair for Episode 17 of Hello You Podcast ...

This month we talk a lot about disruption in one form or another. Disrupting the dominant narrative, disrupting how we experience the world by (re)naming, disrupting our own ideas of what inclusion means and what it implies. And, of course, something about wolves and bananas ... (hint, it's Eurovision related).

Come on in - the Salon is open and we'd love you to join us. For links & resources mentioned in the episode have a look at the shownotes here: https://helloyoupodcast.wordpress.com/2022/06/01/episode-17-disrupting-wolves-with-bananas/

Sept 2021 - A Life Scientist Walks Into A Tearoom

Well, Hello You! It’s been a minute since Louise & Neil last got behind the microphone (apparently). Louise has been on holiday and there’s a super sense of discombobulation as she picks up the threads again. From birdsong to happiness, we explore awe and dive into what positive stroke ratios are (and why they matter). We also throw out some listener questions (we would LOVE your feedback) and discover something that sounds like the start of an academic joke at the University of Sussex: A Life Scientist walks into a tea room… Shownotes available here:  http://shownotes.helloyoupodcast.com

Recorded late in 2017, this conversation takes place against a backdrop of Covfefe, allegations of Russian interference in the US election and a very, very frothy media scene.

It was a strange time...  So Louise & Neil got together to talk it through!

There are few things better than getting outside on a sunny day.  Relishing the rare British Summer, Louise & Neil head up to Louise's allotments to soak in some nature - and start talking about the experience of food, pigeons and stamping butterflies.

Do some words get in the way of really connecting with others when we talk / write / tweet? As you contemplate yet another bag of 'authentic apricots', sit through the third 'innovative' idea pitch of the day or ponder why 'artisan' bread is more expensive than regular bread, but not as well shaped ... know you're not alone ;-)

This is a repost of a podcast originally shared in 2017.  For the shownotes and links to all the stuff we talk about, please head to our blog:  https://shownotes.helloyoupodcast.com

On the 8th June 2017, the UK will go to the election booths for a ‘snap’ General Election, called by Prime Minister Theresa May. The issues here are big: we care about voter behaviour, pollsters being wrong and how negative campaigning affects the ballot box. So we did what we usually do when fired up about something - we got together to talk it out.

June 2021: A Handful of HYP! (Well, it is Ep5!)

June 2021: A Handful of HYP! (Well, it is Ep5!)

Welcome back to the Salon!

This episode was recorded one year and one day after the murder of George Floyd.  We spend some time reflecting on this (especially thinking about this brilliant piece from Philip McKenzie on Media Village) and we talk about what progress has been made in the past year.  While we do not dive deeply into the specifics of what happened, we recognise that this may be triggering for some people.  Our love goes out to all listeners - especially those who may find this content difficult.

To skip this section, please jump to 18minutes when we get into:

  • The awesomeness of the HYP Feel Good Music Prescription Playlist /
  • Louise's most recent poetry publication /
  • ALL CAPS and eggplants being things that geriatric millennials (urgh) have had to adapt to because we remember a time before the internet was a thing.
