Talking Comics Business with Gamal Hennessy
The Latinx Press Podcast is back!
This Substack was always intended to give back to you, the creator. I know what it’s like to want to be in this business with no honest guidance. Luckily, there have been many people generous with their time and knowledge. I think folks are going to appreciate my conversation with this week’s guest, Gamal Hennessy.
Gamal is among the sharpest minds and most experienced players in the limited comic book IP law field and the general publishing industry. He has worked for major publishers and top talent in comics since the oughts. In this interview, we discuss his new book on Kickstarter: The Business of Freelance Comic Book Publishing.
Don’t forget to become a sustaining member or consider a one-time donation if you appreciate the knowledge you’ve gleaned from this and my other posts guiding you to achieve your comic book fame. If you can’t afford to pony up, please share the Latinx Press Podcast and Substack to your timeline!

Hans Vogel is Dead...and Sierra Barnes Killed Him
Sierra Barnes—aka Sierra Bravo on Twitter—is this week's guest! We talk about her historical fiction webcomic based on the WWI and WWII interwar period: Hans Vogel is Dead. You can read it for free online or preorder the new collection from Dark Horse at your local comic shop, online retailer, or bookstore.
We dive into the queer history that inspired the webcomic, what it's like working on a story for 10+ years, and tangent into familiar nerdy waters. I hope you make sure to support Sierra and her new graphic novel!

CeREAL Talk with Jeff May
Jeff May is one of my favorite Los Angeles friends I met when I first moved out here. May is a comedian, boxer, and podcaster that loves comics. I was on his Sideshow Podcast back in 2019, and that was a blast. Jeff runs a pseudo-Patreon Podcasting Network and a monthly comedy show at a toy shop featuring major acts that you should check out if you want to live, laugh, and love. Tell him NoHo Hank sent you!

Hector Rodriguez III and El Peso Hero
This week's guest is El Peso Hero creator: Hector Rodriguez III. I met Hector at the Latino Comics Expo back in 2019, and he has been a friend and advocate of my work—and I try to reciprocate. He has a passion to make comics that you can’t teach, and I have a lot of respect for that. Not only is he a good dude, but a passionate storyteller that is spreading his wings and telling other stories.
Follow Hector on Instagram to get the latest on El Peso Hero and the upcoming Chispa Comics line that's in the works with Scout Comics.

Go off Tiger aka Cynthia Naugle
Content Warning: Sexual Abuse, Mental Abuse, Trauma, Racism
Now that we've got that out of the way: welcome back! This week's guest is Cynthia Naugle! I've known her since 2011! She has blossomed into this artist, toy designer, gallery owner, and all-around chingona. I did tip-off in the introduction of this episode that we discuss her documented experience with Eric Esquivel. Cynthia goes into detail regarding the allegations, and she has been able to move forward. It's a difficult but necessary conversation, and I'm honored she felt comfortable enough to share it with us.
I suggest skipping to part two where the conversation shifts but is referenced.
I am honored to have debuted her new artist name: Go Off Tiger.
You should give her a follow on Instagram and check out what &Gallery has planned in the springtime.

Surviving Publishing with Amanda Meadows
The week's guest is the one, the only: Amanda Meadows.
Amanda is one of the best editors in comics working today. She was the editor of the trend-setting Oni Lion Forge LGBTQIA+ friendly imprint, Limerence Press. But I knew her back when she was slinging funny books under the DEVASTATOR PRESS banner with her partner Geoffrey Golden.
Do yourself a favor and follow Amanda on the socials and keep an eye on her next move because it will make headlines. Believe that!

Burnin' Up for J. Gonzo's Love
I am lucky to have written the first line of my obituary early in life. But I take comfort in knowing that J. Gonzo’s name will be mentioned for our work on our graphic novel: La Voz De M.A.Y.O. Tata Rambo.
Gonzo was in Los Angeles setting up his new online store with The Mighty Lucha Underground in Eagle Rock. We recorded this interview after we had some burgers around my old stomping grounds in Franklin Village.
Gonzo is one of the best artists in comics. Don’t worry; he knows. But he can explain it to you in a way that will make sense. Honestly, Gonzo is one of the best. I stand by that.
Since you pay for this thing, you get to see us face to face in my office. You get to see what six years of friendship and collaboration in comics will do to people. I hope you enjoy our talk.
If you haven’t already, go to your local comic shop and ask for La Mano del Destino right now; especially, if you love Lucha Libre and pro-wrestling. It’s a must-read.
