Mari and Jess chat with Lindsey Wilson, Senior Manager of Partnerships at Lean In. Yes, you read that right, the Lean In, the one created by Sheryl Sandberg. We knew Lindsey’s courageous life and various acts of bravery would not only be inspirational to our listeners, but we knew she could also provide specific insights into how she has leveraged her innate qualities, like being a dreamer, a doer, a curious minded go getter and to help bring marriage equality to the entire southeastern United States. This is one of the many things she's used her space and her voice for. In this episode, we hope you leave feeling really inspired. We also hope you can learn more about how you can use your own gifts with grit and determination, along with a big ol’ slice of humbleness, to create the change you want to see in the world. Many entrepreneurs start companies because they want something to improve or they want something to change. How do we listen across differences and get back to our why to really distill down the things that we care about the most, so that we can build lives that we really love? These are the things that we tackle in this episode, and we know that you're just going to absolutely love it.

S2 Ep. 10 Impacting Families & Disrupting the System as a Solo Practitioner

We’re really excited to welcome our very first ever interview with a Lucy lab graduate! Her name is Brenda Chilstrom. She's a 30 year Pediatric Occupational Therapist with a focus on food therapy with her company, That Makes Sense OT. You’ll hear from a founder who is in the day-to-day transformation of the natural evolution of her business. She is along for the ride as she is growing her business based on her market demand and also her personal growth strategy. We get an up, close and personal view of what we like to call “the muddy middle.” Brenda and Jess chat about her natural evolution of niching down to a specific service type and how she chose to do that. We also chat about the many problems that exist in the traditional occupational therapy practice model. Brenda shares how after 15 years of being in private practice where she never needed or had a website and how that has all changed because she is pivoting her business. She's changing the game for families who cannot access traditional feeding therapy for their children. Specifically, what we love about Brenda is her humbleness, and her dedication to this evolution. Her business has changed a lot in 30 years and she's evolved right along with it step by step! We know you're really going to enjoy this episode.

S2 Ep. 5 Co-founder Adventures & Finding Solutions for Moms Everywhere

Welcome to our first double date! This episode is very serendipitous on many levels. Mari and Jess chat with Nell and Stephanie, co-founders of Kibou, a fanny pack designed to be the deliberately minimal diaper bag. Hear from two co-founders living on different continents having not been in business together before, creating products specifically designed with their unique problems of their customers in mind. In this episode, Nell and Stephanie share their story of why they started Kibou and the challenges that Nell personally faced when wearing her baby and managing all of the things you need when you have a little kids. We talk a lot about simply not knowing what you don't know and how being open and honest with your knowledge gaps are truly the best way to grow forward. We also get into how they surpassed their crowdfunding goal and some tactics that they use to successfully fund their campaign, which in turn solidify their product market fit and viability for their bag. We talk about being afraid to not share your idea so that others don't steal it out from underneath you, something we know many of our founders here at HB&C struggle with. Don't worry, if you're not a mom to a human child, but have a fur baby, this episode is for you too. Tune in and come along on our female founder double date!

We connect with Anne Cocquyt, CEO and founder of The Guild. She is a recent bestselling author of her book, Dare to Launch,  Anne has a wealth of knowledge having come from a tech background working in Germany, Switzerland and other parts of Europe. In this episode, Jess asked her what she would put in a love letter to herself. She takes us through a story of how she launched her very first art business at a Christmas market in Switzerland, thinking her high vibe career and skills from consulting large accounts would translate to entrepreneurship. Spoiler alert, it didn't, not in the way that she thought anyway. We navigate identity and what it means to stay humble along your entrepreneurial journey. We also talk about how to understand what you're good at, finding partners for the areas where you struggle, and ultimately, how to rethink setting up your business for an exit. Anne provides super actionable and tactical advice. Listen in, we know you're going to love this episode!

S2 Ep. 2 Growing, Unlearning & Owning the “Messy Middle”

S2 Ep. 2 Growing, Unlearning & Owning the “Messy Middle”

We chat with Alex Batdorf, a powerhouse in every aspect of the word. Across her career, Alex has created large-scale tech-forward products and companies focused on helping people step into their power, be their best selves and get shit done. Speaking of… her company Get Sh!t Done is a platform focused on centralizing and curating access to growth and scale resources for female entrepreneurs to have optionality and scale their companies successfully.

In this episode, we wanted to take the conversation back to how Alex became the Alex that we all know and love today. We talk a lot about optionality and how the blanketed template advice given to entrepreneurs is one of the worst things floating around on the internet today. We explore her background growing and scaling as a black woman and how she's working to provide the tools for other marginalized groups to break the systems that hold them down. Alex’s mission is to redefine the narrative of entrepreneurship by helping women mindfully scale companies that have impactful and intentional growth while giving them the power to do it on their own terms. If you know us here at HB&C, you know we are completely here for it! Tune in with us on this powerful conversation.

[4:47 - 10:12] Alex dives into how her entrepreneurship journey and passion for equity all started. She talked about her family and the emotional tools that helped get her to where she is today.

[11:04 - 15:17] In response to Alex’s story, Mari shares her thoughts about her own experience with privilege and identity. Alex highlights the importance of creating spaces to have conversations instead of blanketed advice.

[17:08 - 23:53] Alex gets into her younger years of success, one of which is being CEO  of her first company at the age of 19. Alex gets vulnerable and shares her experience of being a hyper-achiever.  She talks about a major turning point for her when she decided to resign from her former company and shift out of hyper-achievement and more into hyper-productivity. She shares how much therapy and the support of her family, especially her grandmother, have played a huge role in her path.

[24:28 - 33:00] Alex shines light on her unlearning and the critical points that impacted her as a leader. She tells us about an unexpected yet freeing point in her life that brought her to do the next best thing for herself which led to Get Sh!t Done.

[34:36- 42:29] We hear front and center about how Alex built her company, Get Sh!t Done. She also gets vulnerable about her anxiety and the years of work she put into moving forward on her journey. She brings up “microwave culture” a term she got from her grandmother and how our need for immediate satisfaction cripples our ability to last through the hard parts of entrepreneurship.  Alex also dives into how she came to support women in moving through the revenue pipeline by focusing on traction.

1. Our Story, Failing Forward Moments & Where to Next

Wow, our first episode, this is so surreal! Mari and Jess wanted to kick off The She Fails Forward first season with an intro episode about them. They both thought it was really important to take a moment to pause and to share their stories with you about their backgrounds, their passions, their careers, which ultimately have all led up to this moment. This episode is a tad longer than typical, but it's for good reason. Staying true to the HB&C brand and who they are, Mari and Jess get personal, they share their many failing forward moments and ultimately share why they created this podcast and what they are hoping to achieve by putting this out into the world. Before they get started, a quick thank you for being here. The first time we do anything new is always an exciting and daunting adventure. That's true for our team, too. Jess and Mari are excited and honored to go on this journey with you so let's kick off our first season of The She Fails Forward Podcast with episode one!
