Bold Your Brave - A Personal Journey with Natalie Benamou, Founder HerCsuite™

Bold Your Brave - A Personal Journey with Natalie Benamou, Founder HerCsuite™

Today on HerCsuite™ Radio, Founder and Host Natalie Benamou, shares a personal experience about her journey as an Entrepreneur, Mom and Leader. This behind the scenes story happened on Entrepreneur Day.  We celebrate all female entrepreneurs.

Last week on Entrepreneur day, I spent the day and well into the night, at the hospital with my oldest daughter. After two years of searching we finally discovered the cause of her extreme pressure on the brain- too much spinal fluid. It’s a rare condition and disease.Take a listen to this heartfelt story.

'If you are a parent with a child that has complex medical needs, you will understand how there are peaks, valleys and why a supportive community is so important. As an owner of a small women owned business I have a responsibility and in between procedures and medical consultations, I was working on an event that we hosted the day after the procedure. Whether caring for my daughters and family, team, or clients. I care deeply and I have an unwavering commitment to persist.

Two years ago, without knowing it, the community I created would lift me up through the peaks and valleys. HerCsuite™ is the result of the people we surround ourselves with and I am blessed to have Advisors and members to stay the course with me- sending text messages of prayers. I am especially thankful to my youngest daughter- she is a peak on this journey and came home last week shortly after the procedure. Our small and mighty team Meghan, Julie and Natalie and a wonderful supportive husband and friends, thank you!

Bold Your Brave Top 5 Tips

  1. Nothing matters more than your health- don’t give up until you find the right doctor who listens.  You and the people you care about matter.
  2. Meditate and visualize outcomes.  I did everything I could to calm my nerves so I could be strong for my daughter. I prayed a lot, visualized the outcome, meditated and even did Tai Chi to ground my energy.
  3. Express gratitude in small ways to strangers. My daughters hear me say “Midwest friendly” all the time. Strike up a conversation with someone who least expects it and lift them up - you will have a ripple effect. And it will boost your mood instantly.
  4. Surround yourself with the right people. Your network is more than connections it is a lifeline that takes you on a journey. You need women in your corner.
  5. Don’t give up. You have everything you need to make things happen.

Find out how Julie Deem does it all while raising two young girls!!

Why Kentucky:

  • Breathitt County, Kentucky was hit with what was described as a, "once in a millennia flood" this summer which completely devastated the region.
  • This community was still rebuilding from a flood that was described as a, "once in a hundred year flood" less than 16 months ago.

How you can help during a natural disaster:

  • Pray for the people in the devastated communities.
  • Donate money and resources to help families rebuild.
  • Volunteer your time and skills to work on projects.

"When it comes to working and volunteering or just showing up in life, you can be the person that thinks there's no work to do and stand around and wander and then come home with the experience of, "Well, I came, I saw. Didn't get what's done, but, hey, I did my part." Or you can be the person that takes initiative and sees where you can help to make things better." -Julie Deem

  • EQ stands for emotional intelligence and technically it's emotional intelligence quotient and you get an EQ score based on your level of emotional intelligence.
  • PQ is your positive intelligence quotient, or your ratio of responding to life's challenges, setbacks, disappointments, and conflicts.
  • PQ enables you to respond with a more positive, helpful mindset and response versus a more negative and sabotaging mindset and response.

How to use PQ to Handle Life's Challenges:

  • Identify which of the 10 saboteurs is holding you back.

PQ is based in these four areas:

  • Neuroscience

  • Positive Psychology
  • Performance Science

Maximize Your Team Engagement with Lillian Haase

Maximize Your Team Engagement with Lillian Haase

How can you maximize engagement with your team when working remotely? Take a listen to this conversation with Lillian Haase and host Natalie Benamou, as they discuss how you can improve team engagement when everyone is no longer in the office.

Lillian Haase is the the Chief Marketing Officer for an SEO company, Search Metrics. Lillian has been working as a Digital Marketer since 2008. She started out as an affiliate marketer then moved on to become a consultant when business owners discovered she could help them ‘get found on the internet’. She progressed to become an Account Manager in two Digital Marketing agencies followed by working as Team Lead in an international PR agency and Head of Marketing for a private University.

Learn how you can maximize your team engagement.  Listen to Lillian Haase as she shares leadership tips to move you and your organization forward.

Challenges of transitioning to a remote work environment:

  • Being on camera all the time is different than attending meetings in person.
  • It is easy to work more hours because there is no commute.
  • Trusting that your team will complete their tasks.
  • It can be harder to see micro signs of body language and expressions while not being in-person.

Book Recommendation: Working Remotely: Secrets to Success for Employees on Distributed Teams by Theresa Douglas

6 Ways to maximize engagement with your team:

  1. Have daily standup meetings early in the morning to get your team on the same page.
  2. Trust that your team is working.
  3. Ask for updates on a regular basis in 1:1 conversations
  4. Keep meetings small, between 5 and 6 people.
  5. Always have an agenda for the meeting and include everyone.
  6. Encourage everyone on your team an opportunity to participate.

"One of the tactics that I've been trying to stick to is not having meetings with too many people. So if you keep the group smaller, say, under five or under six, you can basically see what's going on. And it's easier to have a conversation with all of those people. But once it gets over six, it actually gets quite tricky." -Lillian Haase

When your culture is struggling, if you have failures and breakdowns, if your execution is less than up to par, sometimes teams may perceive an executive unfavorably. The leader may not now why, because they're not having the right conversations.

Coaching Benefits

· It's a proven tool.

· It effectively helps you to develop as a leader.

· Accelerate results when working with a coach

Empowering Questions to Ask Yourself in Challenging Situations

  1. What is it that determines whether you have a voice?
  2. What would feeling like you have a voice look like?
  3. In the situation that you're in, what's the outcome that you would like to see?
  4. What would line up with what you care about and with what the organization cares about?

Inspiration for 'Life Beyond #MeToo: Creating a Safer World for Our Mothers, Daughters, Sisters & Friends'

"We've created this moment in the culture where radical transformation is now possible because of a whole new level of awareness that a lot of people were not able to see before. There's a new way of looking at things. And in that moment, it created an opportunity to craft a new rule set for how we live and how we get along as people in the world." - Christine Rose

Curated Solutions for Your Overwhelm with Natalie Benamou

Curated Solutions for Your Overwhelm with Natalie Benamou

Have you been feeling overwhelmed?  You are in good company.  So many women have shared their stories recently, podcast host and Founder of HerCsuite™ Natalie Benamou shares relatable stories about being on the "super highway to success" only to realize the fast lane isn't all it was cut out to be.

Recurring Theme

I have had the honor of talking to so many women about your careers, goals and what drives you. I kept hearing from everyone I talked to: 'I am overworked and under resourced. I am burnt out. I don't know how to do more...'

Work Smarter Not Harder

  • We tell women, you need to work harder (although Dana Holmes rightfully says "Work Smarter not Harder".
  • Do more.
  • Volunteer more. Raise Your Hand. Ask.
  • The result of being on that superhighway when the stress is increasing is that you instead of being in the fast lane you feel like you are about to be Thelma and Louise driving off that cliff.

Does this sound like where you are today? I feel you. As someone who has been in the fast lane, it can be hard to take a breath. To realize you should be taking the breath to simply Be.

Reality for Women Who Don't Leave

  • Each time a member of a team leaves...the pieces have to get picked up by someone. T
  • The work, whatever that was, is left undone. It is a domino effect, on the organization and the bottom line.
  • You see the cost to replace that one person- the 1.5x isn't the full story.
  • There is the ripple effect of increased stress and also, customer experience or delivery decline in the interim.

"Only you know the stress and overwhelm level you are experiencing today. My hope is that whatever that is, you find your tribe, your people, your support network who will lift you up. Here is to us all taking time out of our day today to just be."- Natalie Benamou

HerCsuite™ is curating solutions to reduce overwhelm and increase engagement and fulfillment. It started with providing everything needed to create a cross organization mentorship program for Coupa and mentor-mentee matching services for mentor circles for organizations like Terumo BCT.  We quickly realized that mentorship while being one of the best ways employees reach success, it was only part of the overwhelm equation.

Natalie Benamou is the Founder of HerCsuite™, all-in-one platform is a SaaS private network hub is designed for organizations to retain and engage female talent. The Power of Business Resource Groups with Karen Brown

The Power of Business Resource Groups with Karen Brown

How can you transform your employee resource group into a business resource group? Take a listen to this interview with Karen Brown, CEO and Founder of Bridge Arrow.  Karen is the author of the Harvard Business Review article, “To Retain Employees, Focus on Inclusion, not Just Diversity”. She founded Bridge Arrow to ensure businesses are more profitable by focusing on return on equity for investors, shareholders, and employees, with an understanding born of over 25 years in the corporate world. Karen advises global companies about how to drive growth and profitability by promoting diversity and inclusion in their organizations. She has served as a global keynote speaker and panel moderator at conferences hosted by the US military academy and the Chicago council on Global Affairs among others. Karen is a compelling storyteller whose presentations spark conversation and spur action.

Transform Employee Resource Groups Into Business Resource Groups:
>> Create business resource groups to meet the needs of your members.
>> Recognize members both formally and informally.
>> Survey members and listen and share insights.

Karen shares how she empowers DEI leaders to win stake holder buy-in.
Example from her time at Monsanto and leading DEI.
>> Prepare them on how and when to engage with stakeholders.

Five Strategies for Business Resource Groups:

  1. Ask for input when designing the strategy to report progress on a regular basis throughout the year.
  2. Support and host regular quarterly meetings with key stakeholder groups.
  3. Share a progress report to the executive sponsors, managers of the employee group leaders and HR leaders who were assigned to these employee groups.
  4. Create an executive DEI council and share out results.
  5. Host an employee resource group conference that brings together the entire executive team, DEI council, managers of the employee leaders, HR sponsors, and the heads of the employee groups.

"It is a huge missed opportunity for a business and C-suite executives to not recognize the qualities in the leaders of employee groups, to tap into them and to position them as incubators of talent for the leadership of the organization overall."- Karen Brown

Today's guest is Deepa Purushothaman, co-founder of nFormation which provides brave, safe, new space for professional women of color and a Women and Public Policy Program Leader in Practice at the Harvard Kennedy School. Prior to this, Deepa spent more than twenty years at Deloitte and was the first Indian American woman to make partner in the company’s history. Deepa was also Deloitte’s national WIN (Women’s Initiative) leader, the firm’s renowned program to recruit, retain, and advance women.  Join host Natalie Benamou and Deepa Purushothaman for this special conversation about her new book: THE FIRST, THE FEW, THE ONLY: How Women of Color Can Redefine Power in Corporate America.

Deepa shares how she interviewed over 500 women of color for this book. She highlights both individual stories as well as the numerous commonalities she has observed from having these discussions. Her personal stories and actionable takeaways in the book will resonate with a wide range of readers, from CEOs and HR teams to managers and employees.

"There are these amazing women who have been first, but we don't spend enough time talking about the barriers that they overcome and how much extra work there is and how difficult it is." - Deepa Purushothaman

In this special discussion, Deepa describes:

  • The extra burdens and excess work WOC take on for companies in the name of culture building.
  •  Pushing back against toxic messaging—including the things we tell ourselves.
  • Embracing the valuable cultural viewpoints and experiences that give us unique perspectives at work.

Two Surprising Discoveries From The Book:

1. "Many of the women of color I interviewed were actually sick with mysterious illnesses."

2. "Women shared with me that they felt other women didn't support them in the workplace."

"I want women and women of color to be in full voice when they get to the seat at the table. So they can actually show up, with all their super powers, and all the things that they bring to the table."- Deepa Purushothaman

The Secret to Engaging and Retaining Female Talent with Natalie Benamou

The Secret to Engaging and Retaining Female Talent with Natalie Benamou

If I was to ask you: " How many of you feel overwhelmed?" The answer according to a Deloitte Study, is 77%.

During the pandemic, a record 5.4 million women left the workforce. There are a lot of articles that talk about the great resignation, the great retirement, the great hiring--but few focus on the cause, the overwhelm.  If we apply the 77% statistic to the total number of women who left their jobs,  4,158,000 felt overwhelmed.

Take a break today and listen to host and Founder of HerCsuite™ Natalie Benamou, as she shares the secret to retaining and engaging female talent.

4 Ways To Increase Retention and Engagement:

1. Provide a mentoring program.  Focus on meeting the needs of women in your organization. Offer a service like Made For You Mentoring by HerCsuite™ and include an easy mentor to mentee match system and hosting kickoff events.

2. Remove overwhelm by offering curated events. Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are made up of volunteers.  Offer the leaders in your ERG support to execute an event, so they can focus on leadership development instead of logistics.

3. Invite leaders to participate.  When women see a leader engaged in a mentoring program, they feel valued and appreciated.

4. Keep it simple.  The best way to encourage participation is by making access to events, meetings and communication easy for all participants.

Two Mentoring Made For You Programs:

1. Cross Organization Mentorship Programs like Coupa Empower's program.  Check out the Press Release on how four organizations were matched across their employee resource groups 1:1 and have a private Mentoring Hub inside HerCsuite™.

2. Internal Mentoring Programs: Mentors are matched to a group of mentees like Terumo BCT's program. “HerCsuite™ platform is so much easier to use and
create connections. Now more than ever, people are so busy, ease of use is really important.” -
Melanie Neal, Vice President, Terumo BCT

We are focused on the 77% of you who feel overwhelmed and offer women and organizations a framework to reduce stress and achieve success at every career level.

Are you planning for retirement?  HerCsuite™ NEXT is a new mastermind program designed to support women 50 and over who are looking to retire.  Join HerCsuite™ Mastermind Circle program and save on annual subscriptions.

How to Leverage Your Value with Stephanie Sims - Best of HerCsuite™ Radio

How to Leverage Your Value with Stephanie Sims - Best of HerCsuite™ Radio

Are you looking for investors in your business and unsure where to start? Let’s take a walk with Stephanie Sims, founder of Finance-Ability®, former investment banker and finance expert. Stephanie gives her advice and strategies on moving from “shiny object syndrome” to prioritizing your growth strategies. This conversation with host Natalie Benamou and Stephanie Sims shows you how you can start leveraging your value today.

Evaluate Your Business:

1. Take a step back and understand what you want the business to be.

2. Develop your “credible milestone ask” based on what the next goal/objective is for your business.

3. Focus on your strengths and recognize your weaknesses when expanding your team. Hire people who will balance you out.

4. Think early about your path to profitability instead of only focusing on growth.

The Ask:

● Things don’t have to be perfect when asking for money for your business.

● Be open with investors about your experiments (what worked and what didn’t work).

● Watch out for “shiny object syndrome”. Is it going to add value to your business?

Know Your Worth

● Giving equity away for your business: If someone wants to invest in exchange for 5%, you need to know if that’s $50,000 or $500,000. It’s important to have a sense of the dollar value for what you’re giving away.

● Receiving equity as partial payment at a new job opportunity: What does the deal look like if the equity doesn’t materialize vs. if it does happen.  Are you comfortable with the balance of risk and reward that you’ve agreed to take to make that deal work.

Thank you, Stephanie Sims, for this conversation, your expertise and helping entrepreneurs understand how to leverage their value.

Stephanie Sims has more than two decades in finance, quality & IT management and valuation of public and private entities. Stephanie’s experience with large transactions and her knowledge of how due diligence works made it easy to spot one of the key reasons that entrepreneurs face such difficulty getting financing: they don’t understand the fundamentals of evaluating risks versus rewards. Developing this knowledge base led her to see that everyone has the ability to manage their finances successfully, but they don’t always realize it. And that’s where the notion of Finance-Ability was born.

How to Move Forward Fearlessly with Katie Horwitch

How to Move Forward Fearlessly with Katie Horwitch

How can you move forward fearlessly and be the you, you're meant to be?  Katie Horwitch is a writer, speaker mindset coach, and the founder of, WANT Women Against Negative Talk, a platform that gives women tools and inspiration to shift their negative self-talk patterns. Katie can be heard on our favorite health and wellness app Aaptiv where she provides positive encouragement for every fitness.  This episode goes out to all women who subconsciously think-I am not enough-and change that dialogue to be- I can move forward.  You are worth it.

Feel inspired and listen to this interview with host Natalie Benamou and Katie Horwitch as they share, "How to Move Forward Fearlessly".Discover how to do a multitude of different things at every phase of your life.  Katie shares how age should not be a limiting factor, and we need to think 'why not' start a business in our 40's or 50's or write a Broadway musical in our 60's.

"At the end of my life, I want to have used every single bit that I was given. I want to have used all of my talents and all of my love and given to me, so that when I am done, I am an empty vessel because I've given it all out."

Three Ways People Experience Self-Talk:

  1. Internal monologue.
  2. Internal monologue combined with feelings.
  3. Only feeling without a monologue.

Locate in your body and get clear where you are and ask: Where in my body do I feel these thoughts? What am I thinking? Then maximize wherever you are and ride that wave and embrace the human experience.

"For me, it's not about living your best life, it is about living your fullest life. I believe that we all have that magic within us. We know deep down who it is we're meant to be whether we know in words or feelings or whatever it is, we have that knowledge to be who we are meant to be. -Katie Horwitch

How can you be more resilient? Jennifer Lynn Robinson is the CEO of Purposeful Networking and a motivational speaker about change and resilience, following her own recovery and reinvention of a near death accident. Jennifer gave a TEDx talk on change and disruption in June, 2020 and is a media contributor who has been featured both locally and nationally.

Tips for Your Journey of Resilience:
>> Be persistent. Jennifer spent 5 years pursing her dream to give a TED Talk.
>> Use visualization. Seeing herself on stage kept her going.
>> Hyper-focus your goals. It was important for Jennifer to get her message out there.

Feel inspired by this conversation about resilience, reinvention and transformation.  Jennifer and Natalie share their personal challenges after they each suffered a brain injury the same year.

After being told she might not want to be a speaker, Jennifer used visualization to see herself not only as a speaker, but what it would be like to be on a TEDx stage. Jennifer discovered her super power is networking and did a pivot from consulting to speaking about networking. Today, Jennifer provides resources to individuals and organizations about networking and how to increase your connections.

"Even though the thing that you think is going to be a success is not going to happen in the time frame or in the way that you envisioned it, it doesn't mean it's not going to happen." -Jennifer Lynn Robinson

Making the Minutes Count with Natalie Benamou

Making the Minutes Count with Natalie Benamou

How have you been impacted by time this past year?  One thing we all have learned during the pandemic is what was our reality before and what we live now is forever changed. As much as we wish, believe and try, our now is on a path we don’t yet know the outcome.  This episode is a behind the scenes look at the personal journey of being an entrepreneur, but more than that, it is a look at how being a caregiver has shaped the passion to make a lasting impact for women.

Listen to this personal episode as host Natalie Benamou shares the lessons she has learned about time and "Making the Minutes Count".

Many of you listening have had difficult times this year.   Minutes, hours, days and weeks all blended together.  One of the hardest things learned this year, is to wait for answers.

5 Lessons About Time:
1. Time will move at the pace it's meant to move, sometimes too fast and sometimes agonizingly slow.
2. For those of us driven by a mission or a purpose, it can be really hard to slow down and take in the minutes and moments.
3. Push forward and don't let time be the thing that goes unanswered.
4. Making time for yourself can be really hard, especially for caregivers.
5. Time moves on for others at a different speed than for ourselves.

"It's been hard to share this story because it is so deeply personal. My hope is that when you listen, you know, you're not alone. We are here for you. There are people to support you. And when you make the minutes count, that experience gives you joy and hope, especially for the future."
