Rebuilding Life After a DUI: How Confronting Trauma Was Key to Sobriety with Amanda Martinez

Rebuilding Life After a DUI: How Confronting Trauma Was Key to Sobriety with Amanda Martinez

Amanda had a difficult childhood and upbringing, with a largely absent biological father, a turbulent relationship with her mother, and family trauma. She joined the Air Force to get away and start her own life. She started drinking heavily during her first assignment in South Korea, setting the stage for later issues with alcohol. This continued during deployments and assignments in flight squadrons with a strong drinking culture.

She went through two failed marriages while in the Air Force, the second of which was especially painful as it resulted in losing her stepson who she had helped raise. This led to increased drinking to cope. Amanda has a scary realization during a DUI crash that changed the trajectory of her life in a whole new, yet very tough direction.

Her drinking worsened during COVID-19 lockdowns in England, as she was isolated and alone after her second divorce. She reached a low point where she asked her mother to come stay with her.
Recently, she has focused on her recovery from alcoholism, repairing family relationships, and finding purpose.

Her story illustrates the impacts of trauma and hardship, the spiral of alcohol abuse, and ultimately the power of resilience, self-discovery, and growth.

We discuss the significance of the EOD memorial and the distinction between PTSD and PTSI, to the heartbreaking reality of losing a loved one to suicide and the alarming "22 a day" crisis, we delve deep into the challenges faced by the EOD community. Moreover, we touch on crucial subjects such as transitioning out of the military, post-traumatic growth, and the quest for identity and purpose.

A special shout-out goes to Heath Tempel for extending the invitation and to MSgt Jason Umlauf for orchestrating these captivating interviews.

More on Spencer Nelson:
AW (AW), OTA (IUSS), EN (EOD)
Nelson Spencer's Navy career was as unique as he was and not one that most sailors have the opportunity or fortitude to serve, not then (70s, 80s and 90s) and still not today
(2023). He was afforded three (3) different platforms and ratings in his 20 year career.
AW-Aviation Antisubmarine
Warfare Operator, reflecting a specialization that was clearly born out of Cold War needs to monitor the activities of Soviet submarines.
He was stationed in Lajes, Azores where the maritime patrol aircraft crews would gather intelligence by detecting, tracking, classifying, and analyzing both surface and subsurface contacts.

OTA-Ocean Systems Technician
Analyst, same premise and mission as the AW in him, but he got to do it from land based duty stations,
Naval Facilities. He served at NOPF on Ford Island, HI.
In 1990, more than 1/2 way thru his career he challenged the EOD physical fitness requirement because he exceeded the maximum allowable age limit, by almost a decade!!!!!! He "sailed" through the requirements and finally found his passion and jov of his career, EOD. He served with Mobile Unit 3 in San Diego until his retirement 26 years ago, 4/30/1997.
He deployed on numerous occasions to regions you are all well to knowing of but had the biggest joy.

midtownyogakc.org I joined the Air Force in 1991 and planned on retiring after twenty years but unfortunately I was medically discharged in 1999. I was suffering from migraines, pain in my legs and a few other issues but those two prohibited me from serving our Country. I eventually began to have battles with PTS that affected my home and work life. Although I might appear happy and healthy on the outside, on the inside I was truly struggling. I was struggling to find a purpose, an opportunity to serve. I was angry and bitter because I spent the next twenty years trying to find out what was the cause of my health symptoms and the VA Hospital was not very helpful. All this frustration and anger was taken out on my family, friends and colleagues. My eldest daughter had been suggesting yoga because she thought it would help my symptoms.

I started my yoga journey with a practice of mindfulness and meditation and what I discovered was that for the first time in a long time I felt calm and relaxed. I would pause any time during the day when a trigger or any type of anxiety occurred and perform a meditation practice. I had this practice for four months before I even stepped into a yoga studio. The true foundation of yoga is our breath and I have realized through this journey, that yoga is not just the hour on the mat, but the twenty-three hours off the mat. The mat sets the foundation for the rest of the day. Yoga does two things for us each and every day. First, it allows us to realize the things in our life that we are doing well and secondly, those things in our life that need work. Yoga is truly for everyone and it transforms our life from the inside out.

I am a Gulf War Veteran who spent eight years in the Air Force. I have a BS in Business Management, a 500hr Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance and have been retired since 2014. Suffering from chronic pain and PTSD since my time in the military, I understand first-hand the numerous benefits of yoga and meditation for pain reduction and mental clarity. I am a yoga instructor that recognizes and believes that yoga can cause both physical and mental transformations that result in less pain, reduced PTSD symptoms and a reduction in stress. I provide a variety of classes that serve those looking for a physical challenge as well as a complete mindfulness/meditation practice. I realize that people come to the mat at all different levels with different intentions and I welcome everyone to come and make the class their unique yoga experience.

Moderation and balance are truly two of the greatest aspects of being mindful. Providing a variety of yoga including talks to the community through different facets allows me to connect with the community. I have to make sure to not overextend myself mentally, physically or spiritually, otherwise I will not be able to provide the type of positive energy to my family or the community.
