Talking About Trauma

Talking About Trauma

Cory George is a Traumatologist and Mental Health Consultant. Trauma touches us all! The word “trauma” literally means wound, shock, or injury. People process experiences differently, and not everyone has the same reaction to any event; what one person experiences as trauma may not cause distress for another.

Children as well as adults are susceptible to trauma. Shock, fear, anger, sadness, difficulty concentrating, and a sense of helplessness are common features of the immediate trauma response. However, the effects usually abate over time, and the vast majority of people recover from trauma.

Active coping skills and strong social support are important in mitigating symptoms and preventing the longer-term effects of trauma on mental health. Join us for an in-depth conversation about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the importance of understanding, recognizing, managing and coping with intergenerational and cultural trauma.

Only Feed Me Life - Jerome Braggs, Poet, Medical Intuitive, Author

Embark on a love-infused journey into healing and self with this raw, honest, and gentle collection of poetry from beloved poet and writer Jerome Braggs. Using the perspective that poetry is medicine, too, Jerome escorts readers through an exploration of lessons in life, relationships, self-healing, and body image, all of which shine a light on what it takes to face the wholeness of ourselves and heal. This collection is divided into four sections—"life lessons," “self-healing," "relationships," and “my body" — with each section representing the radical healing that is found when true + deep self-love is rediscovered and applied. He Said, He Said, He Said welcomes Oklahoma City-born Jerome Braggs to our platform. Braggs believes that “poetry is medicine, too.” Stop by for a candid conversation with Bragg. As always, your presence and participation make the show even better! We will respond to your questions in real time. We promise to leave you feeling better than you did when you arrived. People can experience a wide range of emotions before and after a disaster or traumatic event. There’s no right or wrong way to feel. However, it’s important to find healthy ways to cope when these events happen. You may be struggling to understand why this is happening, or you may be directly dealing with the aftermath of a crisis with the loss of a friend or family member, a failed relationship, financial setbacks, community violence, and world issues. The thoughts, feelings and even physical effects after these types of events is called trauma.

Author Talk with Brendan Slocumb and Story J

Author Talk with Brendan Slocumb and Story J

Author, Brendan Slocumb has found his voice and says what he wants in his second novel, the music thriller, “Symphony of Secrets!"

Imagine that the single most influential piece of modern American music — a tour de force that spans classical, opera, Indigenous, Latin, folk, jazz and blues — was not, as claimed, the work of a White man but stolen from a homeless Black woman with a mental disability. Such a theft, and the public deletion of its true creator, would be a powerful illustration of the exploitation of marginalized artists. A contemporary classical-music scholar gradually discovers the long-hidden truth inside a cryptic archive.

Slocumb subtly weaves an important message about racial erasure in American music history in his fast-paced, music-thriller detective adventure.

Story J (Jason Williams) is the Host & Creator of “The Storytime Show” and our featured guest in "We See You!" He tells us how creating a story time class for kids, during the Covid pandemic, saved his life and lead to “The Storytime Show!” We also talk about child development, the importance of representation, if he would ever have Drag Queens reading to children, the evolution of masculinity, and the reasons behind the efforts to eradicate public education.

Alvin, Bobby, and Vash recognize National Teacher Appreciate Week, National Nurses Week, and in honor of Mother's Day, pay tribute to their own moms: Margaret V. King, Mary Edwards, and Edith Smith.
