Our mantra is to always look for learning, so we’re on a mission to chat with business owners that have faced challenges, to share their stories, and delve really deep into their mindset. Sian Millar, Founder of Dizzy Ducks, Luxury Coastal Holiday Homes, Polka Dot Farm, and The Boardroom “Early Years”

Sian Millar, Founder of Dizzy Ducks, Luxury Coastal Holiday Homes, Polka Dot Farm, and The Boardroom “Early Years”

In this episode, I catch up with someone who I have known and respected for many years, someone we’ve worked closely with in our business, and someone who is a friend that we’ve shared many trips – I know she doesn’t like to mention Everest Base Camp for one!

This episode is with serial entrepreneur Sian Millar, who many of you will know from the Entrepreneurs Circle with her Dizzy Ducks hat on.

Sian originally got into the nursery industry because of the lack of childcare in Essex when she was a working mum. To a mind like Sian’s, of course a problem is an opportunity so she left her stable job to create a nursery group that would become a badge of distinction.

Sian grew Dizzy Ducks from one to eight sites, and fourteen years later successfully exited and sold her business to a larger nursery group.

Since then, she’s worked as a business coach, set up her rental property company, and has recently launched Polka Dot Farm, a unique space for young children that focuses on outdoors, exploring nature and ensuring their indoor space is just as engaging as the outdoors.

  • Listen to Learn: Why Vision must come first, and everything (and everyone) needs to follow and stay true to this.
  • Why you need to set-up for Exit at the START of your business journey, not at the end.
  • How to get a business to survive on its own.
  • How Sian has grown her team to 40 members, generated a Turnover of £2.2m, and has a long waiting list – in just 5 months!
  • Why you shouldn’t have a day job in your business.
  • Why you should never let people jeopardise your brand or identity.
  • Alarms & Alerts and Scorecards don’t have to be numbers based.
  • How to WOW your team & your customers for less than £10 to retain loyalty.
  • Why policies, procedures and systems are there to help and learn from – and not there to blame.
  • Why you, as the Leader, must hold up your hands when you’ve got it wrong.

It’s been a while since we’ve done a Podcast, but I promise you this is worth the wait!  This week I’m joined by someone who helps, inspires, and stretches people to perform to be their very best: Jean-Pierre De Villiers, or JP, as he’s known.

I first met JP at Daniel Priestley’s Key Person of Influence and have since been inspired by his talks as well as his personal journey over the last few years which I’m sure we’ll touch upon.

  • How to re-engineer all your goals to get you moving towards your Vision and the person you want to be.

  • It’s not WHAT happens, it’s HOW you react.
  • Why your measure of success should be: How Happy Am I?
  • How you need to create a culture of learning from mistakes in your business.
  • Self-Leadership comes before any other kind of Leadership.

Sophie Hollis, Founder of Inspire Girls Football, Chair of IGF FC, Football Coach, Former Elite Football Player

In this episode, we bring together the world of business and sport, with guest Sophie Hollis, founder of Inspire Girls Football.

I first met Sophie about three years ago, when our daughter Lily went along to one of Sophie’s Inspire Girls football courses. Since then, Lily has attended Inspire Girls Football Camps, as well as goalkeeper training programs.

I’ve also got to know Sophie through her work she is doing with Camberley Town Girls FC, which I am a coach of.

I am truly inspired by Sophie’s journey, her purpose, her energy, and her mission to inspire as many girls as she can. But before we kick-off, a quick background…

Sophie has played football for several elite clubs in and around Surrey and Hampshire. At 17, she gained a full athletic scholarship to play professional college soccer in America. After battling through a long-term injury, she fell in love with coaching, so much so that she decided to create Inspire Girls Football in 2019. Jeremy Harbour, Global Expert in Mergers & Acquisitions, Founder & Director of Unity Group & Harbour Club

Jeremy Harbour, Global Expert in Mergers & Acquisitions, Founder & Director of Unity Group & Harbour Club

This week I’m joined by one of the world’s experts in Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) in the field of SMEs, Jeremy Harbour, live from Dubai. I’ve known Jeremy for a few years now, having been part of his Harbour Club, via opportunities in Singapore, and have enjoyed his books.

In the late 1990’s, Jeremy acquired a competitor of the telecommunications he owned – without cash or involving a bank. Proving that necessity truly is the mother of invention, he figured out a deal structure that worked for the company he wanted to buy. In a single afternoon, he grew by a year’s worth of sales – and that solidified it – he became a deal junkie.

Since then, Jeremy founded Unity Group, a firm specialising in attracting investments and creating opportunities for SMEs to scale, he has advised on more than 300 acquisitions of both distressed and solvent businesses.

Jeremy’s passion for changing the mindset of wealth creation fuelled the birth of Harbour Club where he teaches real tactics for buying, fixing, and selling businesses with no experience and no cash up front. With new members every month it has become a change engine for good – helping entrepreneurs excel at wealth creation so they can be problem solvers in their local communities.

Listen to Learn:

- Why M&A is a great way to grow quicker, and why it’s the solution for everything

- How it’s easier working ON a business you’ve bought, rather than one you’ve started

- Be the buyer, not the seller

- Why having Capital to buy can make you lazy

- Why you must be a MOTIVATED buyer or seller

- Be realistic on your valuation

- The 3 key drivers of value

- Why a big business can be a group of smaller businesses

- The importance of leaving the entrepreneur in charge

- Why you must start before you’re ready

- How M&A is life-changing and will give you time & financial freedom

- Getting rid of the ego!

We have lots in common with this week’s guest, John Warrillow. Small businesses have always revolved around their owner, but in 2011, John kicked off a revolution with the release of his bestselling book, ‘Built to Sell: Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You’. (Our purpose is all about helping business owners create a business that successfully runs whether they turn up or not).

John’s book spawned a company - The Value Builder System™ - that has helped more than 50,000 businesses build more valuable companies.  I was lucky enough to spend some time with John just before the COVID crisis in February 2020 at his conference in Denver where we’d recently become a certified partner of his global Value Builder System.

John is host of Built to Sell Radio, ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the world’s 10 best podcasts for business owners. In 2015, Warrillow wrote another best-selling book called ‘The Automatic Customer: Creating a Subscription Business in Any Industry’ which illustrates how owners can accelerate the value of their business through creating recurring revenue streams.

Pete Daines – Founder, Chairman, Director of Coaching & Player at Yateley Silverbacks Basketball Club, Former GB Basketball U18 Team Manager, Head of Boys Sports at Yateley Manor, GB Over 45s Player

Pete Daines – Founder, Chairman, Director of Coaching & Player at Yateley Silverbacks Basketball Club, Former GB Basketball U18 Team Manager, Head of Boys Sports at Yateley Manor, GB Over 45s Player

I’m really excited about today’s Podcast because we’re delving into the world of Sports. This week we have a professional basketball coach, elite player, club founder, and PE teacher Pete Daines (or Mr Daines as our kids know him as!).

Pete set-up the Yateley Silverbacks Basketball Club 11 years ago and in that time the club has won five promotions, two League titles and four Play-off Championships with the adult sides and 8 various titles with the Junior squads. The club has mixed, male and female teams, of all ages starting from U8’s Diddy Dunkers. It’s a wonderful community club that’s like an extended family, and 'I don't work Fridays' are proud sponsors of.

Pete was also Great Britain U18 Team Manager who took his team to 6 European Championships, coached the South of England Youth squads, is a former National League player and a current BE registered referee and coach. He’s recently been selected for the GB over 45s national squad as a player.

Remarkably, this is all in his spare time, because he works full time as Head of Boys Sport at Yateley Manor, where every Friday afternoon he is my boss as I volunteer in helping his department out with Sports lessons and matches, so I get to help coach my 9-year-old twins (and learn an awful lot from Pete and his team).

Listen to this Podcast to learn:

- Managing multiple stakeholders & their expectations.

- How teams take on the personality of their coach and considerations around this.

- Teaching what's in front of you and adapting.

- The importance of getting to know every single individual / child & getting the best out of each one.

- Why seeing with your eyes is more important than any statistic.

- The importance of learning from every single experience, every single day, regardless of how long you've been coaching or teaching for.

- Why sport is one big life lesson.

- Pete's number 1 thing he'd define as a leader

Nigel Botterill - Serial Entrepreneur, Sunday Times Best Selling Author & UK’s Most Sought After Business Growth Expert

Nigel Botterill - Serial Entrepreneur, Sunday Times Best Selling Author & UK’s Most Sought After Business Growth Expert

I’ve known Nigel for 10 years and been lucky enough to work with him as a Business Growth Adviser, shared the stage with him, helped judge his business awards and for the last few years have been his double act for his Masterminds.

I’ve learned a lot from this guy; he’s the quickest implementor I know.

There’s a famous quote by John Wanamaker: “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don't know which half.” This epitomises everything Nigel focuses on – what he doesn’t know about Marketing isn’t worth knowing!

Nigel ‘took the leap’, left his corporate career and started his first business in 2003. Since then, he’s started ten separate million pound plus businesses from scratch in the UK and discovered (through an awful lot of trial and error!) the framework to build and grow businesses.

Now, at the helm of
Entrepreneurs Circle, Nigel spends his time helping other entrepreneurs to do what he’s done – to escape mediocrity, get and keep all the customers their business needs and live the lives they’ve always wanted.  Over 70% of Entrepreneurs Circle members grew their business by at least 100% after two years of membership with about 40% growing by more than 200%.

Listen to the Podcast to learn:

- Why you should avoid being welded to a product.

- How testing a proposition years ago for another business, is now on track to be Nigel's 11th million pound business!

- The power of dividing every day into 90 minute chunks and sticking to this habit.

- Key alerts Nigel has in his business, and how his team shares ownership of these.

- Why embracing a culture of mistakes works, and why you need the right people to fit into your culture.

- Nigel's best advice on Leadership.

Alan Keane - Great Britain U20 Head Basketball Coach, Reading Rockets NBL D1 Head Coach, and JMA BasketballAcademy Head Coach

We’re really excited to have Alan Keane from the world of Basketball on today’s Podcast. Our paths first crossed when we came to see the Reading Rockets – the basketball team Alan is Head Coach of – play the Nottingham Hoods back in March 1999. And then our daughter Lily, who plays for the Yateley Silverbacks Basketball Club U12s, was lucky enough to spend some time with Alan at a Summer Basketball Camp that Silverbacks Coach Pete Daines organised.

I could have talked to Alan all day long and I learned a lot. What it did confirm is that the world of Elite Sports and the world of Business more or less follow the same principles.

Listen to us both openly share from our own coaching perspectives:

- Setting & sharing a vision

- Aligning a team to your vision, your why

- Transparency

- Interdependency & allowing every member of a team to make decisions because you cannot do it for them

- Giving team members breathing space to think and self-manage

- Playing to Win / Playing Not To lose Strategy Vs Playing the Best you possibly can be in every position

- Forget anything that you can’t influence and focus on what you can control

- Heightened levels of self-awareness

- Measuring success & lessons learned

Authentic Leadership
