The May 2024 Canal Walk
Walking from Cheshunt to Hertford East
Then getting bumped for a train ticket.
The weather was glorious and kind.
Back in the Land of the End
Dr Syntaxes head as I have discovered in recent years, is the furthest west you can stand in England. So for the third time this year, I headed west to walk to it. It was a last minute trip and I am grateful for the opportunity to spend so much time visiting my favourite place on Earth.
It won't be the last for this year.
To the last corner of the kingdom (part two)
Here is the second and last part of the winter Cornish adventure.
This section was the most quietest and fun to be fair.
I found the beach 'Song of the sea' and little beach with a hole in a huge rock where I fell over. I was rewarded with seeing a Seal floating in the sea and they kept looking at me.
Land's end was a wonderful sight with a dramatic skyline and winds that changed my hair style.
I shall return in a month or two.
To the last corner of the kingdom (part one)
I finally managed to make my way back to west Cornwall after an absence of 7 weeks and walk from Penzance to Land's end. The south west coast path was mostly mud at this point and during I had to ask myself if it was wise. I did really enjoy it. I was going to walk the next leg to St Ives, but due to the wind and the rain, I thought better of it.
The walk took roughly 7 hours and was about 18 miles on the path, taking me through some of England's best kept secret beaches.
I remember it being a lot harder from 2019, than it was this time. I am going to have another go later on in the year.
I had a lot to say on this podcast, so much so, that I had to split it up into two podcasts.
Enjoy part one.
Mark.
The Pilgrimage
In preparation for the next episode, I needed to walk some miles. St Albans is a beautiful city, so from my front door, I walked there.
It rained, I got soaked, I am clearly shouting to get my voice over the road noise, I spent most of the hike besides roads, busy ones at that.
The pay off was worth it, the journey home via home counties public transport was both easy and cheap.
Not sure I would recommend this one, it's only for those of you who are historically accurate.
I didn't take any photos.
Thanks for listening

hikenpod Montana Episode 3
Hello again from Montana, everyone! I
finally got my butt out the door and onto the trail. The Swamp Dawg,
Molly and myself got out on the southwest side of the Bridger Mountains
in Bozeman/Belgrade Montana and went up Truman Gulch. Location information: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/custergallatin/recarea/?recid=81168

We have had such little snow in the valley that I did this one in my boots instead of skis, skins or snowshoes. However,
there was quite a bit of snow up there, and this was before we just got
dumped on again (stay tuned: some actual skinning in future episodes
may actually be possible!) Molly and I got chilly, I realized I made at
least 3 significant errors in planning judgement, and we came back down.We ended up just under 5 miles, but you'll hear how deep the snow was with me crunching through it on the mic.I am certainly going to be more prepared next time and bring Molly's jacket! If you have other ideas about essentials I need to bring on my hikes, please let me know. I'd be grateful.
Thanks for listening and we'll see you a little further down the trail.

The 11th Hour
Join me as walk along a cold and wet Southend seafront as I just about make the deadline for this week's podcast.
The walk was fun and quiet and recorder raised the volume of the traffic but there was hardly anyone around, a real treat.
Recorded on the Tascamm DR-40x, edited on Reaper Audio on the Rasberry pi 5 using Ubuntu 23, monitored on Audio Technica headphones.
No hike n just pod episode
Listen in where I contradict myself on every sentence. So no podcast on the hike this week, a hike with no audio and me explaining why.
I am getting ready for the next big hike in two weeks. So all the hikes until then will be local and covering old ground (pardon the pun).
This is a lovely walk if you have time to do it and the pay off is exciting.
Record on the Tascam DR- 40x edited on Reaper using the raspberry pi 5.
Around Mersea Island... this time all the way round!
This is my second trip in fours years to Mersea island in Essex, it is roughly 22km all the way round.
It took me four hours to complete with only a couple of minor muddy areas and this winter time.
I drove for an hour and 15 to get there and the weather was fresh but clear. The island was quite quiet but I did manage to speak to one person who was walking her dog along the beach.
I am considering going back in the spring and camping, a very enjoyable afternoon walk.
Recorded on my OnePlus Nord and Tascam dr40x – edited and published on a raspberry pi 5.
The plan, the gear, the skins - hikenpod Montana
In this episode, I discuss my ideas about where Hikenpod Montana might go while testing out my two recording devices.
- Tascam DR-44WL
- Yamaha Pocketrak 2G.
I think, decidedly, the Tascam won out over the Yamaha in the sound department. In this episode's photos you'll see both of the devices sitting on my desk and my silent cohost, Babycat. She was very quiet, although she did a few laps around the basement while I was editing the show.

Back to the start - West Cornwall
Marazion to Penzance in west Cornwall.
I return to the place of the very first hikenpod and walk along the south west coast path in the wind with a cough.
It's a bout a 3 mile mile on the flat, with some beach cover if you are interested. You get an amazing view of St Michael's mount and St Michael's bay, with a distant vista of Lizard point.
The hike took a couple of hours and I wasn't trying, there is a video of the walk on youtube if you have time.
Thanks for listening

hikenpod Montana: Pete's Hill, Bozeman with the Gallatin Valley Veterinarian Support Group
Photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/dLKfcWzvaZ68yDFJA
What a lovely morning with my family and the Gallatin Valley
Veterinarian Support Group out on Pete's Hill in Bozeman, Montana. We
did this hike just before Christmas, 2023.This
is a great little hike that's almost right in town. You could walk from
much of the Bozeman lodging and hotels. It's steep-ish, but not too
bad. You can make it a short hike or extend almost as long as you like
to different trails in town called Highway to the Mountains. And it's
dog-friendly (as you can see, we brought ours.)We cut ours a little short when we found a friend's dog who'd gotten out and was about 9 blocks from their home. And
Jamie, my wife, a.k.a. Dr. Arndt, is a Veterinarian in town and started
a support group for area Veterinarians. Their profession suffers from
abnormally high rates of depression, drug abuse and suicide due to the
high demands physically, mentallly, and emotionally on them. The
Gallatin Valley Veterinarian Support Group hold events like these to
bring local veterinarians together to share struggles and build
community. If you're a veterinarian in the Gallatin Valley area, I recommend popping over to the Facebook Group page to join. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1498119201004250 Next
time, I think we'll do a skinning, snowboard and snowshoe trip to the
South Bridger Mountains which is basically out my front door. Get in
touch if there are trails I absolutely cannot miss in Bozeman or the
Gallatin Valley. Thank you for listening!

From the end of the kingdom Episode 5 Series 4
After a long and exhausting day on the 1st August 2023, we sat in our tent at 11pm and I recorded episode 5. I was too tired to publish that night, so I went to bed and woke up early to edit and publish, only to find my recorder settings had changed and I recorded 10 mins of silence.
This is not the podcast I recorded, this is the one I am replacing the lost one with.

Find me on this island... again (Hike n Pod)
I have returned to my previous idea of visiting islands around the UK and podcasting from them. There is a video version of this account but I think the audio might be a bit more interesting, you can watch it on markriley.org.
In this episode I walked 5 miles round Wallasea island in Essex, a RSPB nature reserve and the head west to Two Tree Island also supported by the RSPB.
A short walk to Hertfordland
This is the longer podcast as I walk through Wormley words into the heart of Hertfordshire. This is an update of what is going on and enjoying the sunshine.
