Joel’s passion is using social media and new media to teach nephrology. He started his blog, PBFluids in 2008. He developed NephMadness and NephJC to leverage the power of community, digital scholarship and creativity to teach nephrology. He is the founder and program director of the Nephrology Social Media Collective internship which trains medical professionals to use social media for medical education. He was recognized by the American Society of Nephrology with the Robert Narins award for innovations in Teaching in 2017.

Dr. Natalia Ivascu is an Associate Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology. She cares for patients as a Cardiac Anesthesiologist and Critical Care Intensivist in the Cardiothoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Dr. Ivascu is the Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CTICU).

Dr. Ivascu completed her undergraduate studies in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. She went on to earn her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. She began her career at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Medical College as a resident in Anesthesiology. Dr. Ivascu completed an additional year of fellowship training at Cornell, in Cardiovascular Anesthesiology. She then spent a year at the Columbia University campus of NYP as a fellow in Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Ivascu is board certified in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. She is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Echocardiography, with certification in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography and Special Competence in Critical Care Echocardiography.

Dr. Viachaslau Barodka is an associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His area of clinical expertise is cardiac anesthesiology. An expert in both red blood cell deformability and vascular stiffness, Dr. Barodka has a strong connection to Biomedical engineering and is developing new tools for real time assessment of renal function. He has also optimized strategies to reduce renal failure post cardiac surgery.

Dr. Barodka earned his M.D. from Belarussian State Medical Institute in Minsk, Belarus. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at City Pediatric Outpatient Clinic No. 17 in Minsk and another residency in anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Barodka performed a fellowship in anesthesiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Barodka joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2009.

His research interests include vascular stiffness, blood transfusion and cardiovascular physiology.

Dr. Barry N. Gardiner, MD obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He completed his internship and a five year residency in general surgery at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. In addition, he was the recipient of an N.I.H. Fellowship in Gastroenterology, completing a two year study in clinical gastroenterology and research investigation into the formation of cholesterol gallstone formation under the tutelage of Donald M. Small at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Gardiner served as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army, both as Staff Surgeon and Director of the Department of Investigational Surgery at the Presidio of San Francisco. He then joined the clinical faculty of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine until entering private practice in general surgery in the East Bay.

Dr. Gardiner pioneered the introduction and development of laparoscopy in general surgery in the early 1990’s and was the principal clinical advisor to Intuitive Surgical, Inc. during the development and clinical trials of the da Vinci™ surgical robot.  He was the principal investigator for the clinical trial of the da Vinci™ system in Mexico City and testified before the FDA panel meeting in 1999 which resulted in the FDA clearing the da Vinci™ surgical system for general laparoscopic use.  Dr. Gardiner has vast experience in minimally invasive surgical techniques, and uses these techniques extensively in the field of general surgery, including innovative surgical approaches with the da Vinci™ robot.

Nathaniel C. Reisinger, MD, is an Instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Fellow in Clinical Ultrasound at the Perelman School of Medicine—Hospital of University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After completing his MD at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, he completed his residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital—Columbia University Medical Center, followed by his nephrology fellowship at Penn. 

Dr. Reisinger's clinical interests are focused on adapting novel technologies to enhance patient care and outcomes in nephrology. He was an educator long before venturing into medicine and is building a point-of-care ultrasound curriculum for nephrology fellows to help bring in the age of the ultrasound stethoscope. 

Dr. Reisinger has a keen interest in the use of social media in nephrology. He is a 2017 intern in the Nephrology Social Media Collective . He is Editor-in-Chief of Kidney.Cloud (app available on iTunes & Google Play) and Jeff Berns’ chief social media strategist @Jeff_Berns_POTD. In addition, he works on the American Society of Nephrology’s joint quality improvement project with the CDC, Nephrologists Transforming Dialysis Safety, for preventing infections in the dialysis unit. He was recently named chief social media strategist for the Nephrology Business Leadership University. Dr. Reisinger has also been featured on DocTalk and is a recurring invited speaker with the Cardiorenal Society of America’s Cardiorenal University

We recently caught up with Dr. Michael Heung to talk about the challenges of  Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in Critical Care Medicine and what is needed to tackle them. After finishing his Internal Medicine training at the University of Cincinnati Hospitals, he completed Fellowship training in Nephrology at the University of Michigan Health System.  He has been a member of the University of Michigan faculty since 2005, and currently serves as Associate Division Chief for Clinical Affairs in the Division of Nephrology. His primary clinical and research interests are in the areas of acute kidney injury and critical care nephrology.
