12 | Learning about Actual skillsets in Building Startups with Misbah Ashraf

12 | Learning about Actual skillsets in Building Startups with Misbah Ashraf

The topic of skills divide us as makers, designers & product managers.. Everyday you hear an opinion on what skills a makers should have. Should be a generalist or a specialist? Especially, when you are looking to run your startup do any of these skills even matter? What goes beyond just these skills? For this, I deep dive into a conversation with Misbah Ashraf, who is currently building Marsplay - a community-led commerce platform for fashion and beauty.

Misbah previously led product and growth at multiple global startups like Toymail, Spangle, Pulse.qa, Pursuit, Keygo.me backed by YC, Social Capital, Alexa Fund, True Ventures, Sequoia, Angel List, among others. He also dropped out of college earlier with his friends from IIT D to build a Fintech startup called Cibola, i.e. Venmo of India.

His passion lies in building products that users find delightful, and this drive is perfectly complemented by his love for people, numbers and winning. In his words, “All my energy comes from bringing order to chaos, solving problems before they surface and staying focused when the going gets tough”.

10 | Collaborating with Business Stakeholders with Kshitij Bhardwaj & Season One Finale.

One of the most important parts of being a designer or a problem solver is working with collaborating with our business stakeholders, conveying ideas and running experiments with them. Quite often there are misunderstandings and resolving them need some respect and empathy on both sides. To get a deeper understanding on how to collaborate with them, I spoke to Kshitij Bharadwaj.

Kshitij is a designer turned Product Manager and has been creating value for the past 8 years for companies like Gojek, Flipkart, Housing and many more. He currently heads a platform group at Gojek which builds communication and identity management tools. He’s also a Full stack developer and tinkers with open source libraries.

This is also an episode which places emphasis on the fact that as designer or product managers we are makers and problem solvers too.

With this episode we come to the end of season 1 of Hireworthy podcast.

Over the past few months, we’ve had the opportunity to talk to some great designers and product managers who shard their deep perspectives on how to be a problem solver or a designer and build your design and management careers well.

Over the candid conversations, we’ve learned that many problems can be solved well if you approach them with a sense of iterative-ness, urgency and curiosity. And that you can communicate with stakeholders effectively with empathy and if you are the face of design in your company, you must be the voice for your users and customers.

Overall as a maker and problem-solver, you can be a great interfae between all teams to ensure products are shipped in the best possible way.

It’s been a great experience for me to host them all, have real conversations and bring some much needed perspectives. Thank you for journeying along with me through this season. I’ll be bringing more amazing conversations for the Season 2, so stay tuned and thanks again very much. Stay safe and have a good time.
