We interrupt our regularly scheduled A Place in Time programming to bring you a special event / bonus episode. We call it Yesterday's News - a time traveling podcast created by young history students! Under the guidance of their teacher Dr. Julie Watts (and with a little help from the folks at Historic America), the 8th grade history students of The Rhoades School in San Diego, CA have built something truly unique: a time traveling news podcast bringing you yesterday's news today! Our first episode focuses on the story of San Diego's world famous Balboa Park. 

Place:  Abraham Lincoln's Cottage at the Soldier's Home

Time:  1864

Part 2 of a 2 part series focusing on Abraham Lincoln's Cottage - the president's sanctuary during the most turbulent days of the American Civil War.

In this episode, Abraham Lincoln stargazes, recites Shakespeare to Edwin Stanton and befriends the soldiers who guard him before he & his family must evacuate their hideaway in the face of an advancing rebel army. Finally, an anonymous assassin takes aim at  the President during a moonlit horseback ride.

In today's expert interview episode, we first go in-depth with special guest Erin Carlson Mast (the former President & CEO of President Lincoln’s Cottage) for an engrossing discussion about the tragic death of Willie Lincoln. Then we welcome aboard Bo Hammond (from the Bromances of History Podcast) for a fun & fascinating look at the pivotal relationship between Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.

Part 1 of a 2 part series focusing on Abraham Lincoln's Cottage - the president's sanctuary during the most turbulent days of the American Civil War. 

In this episode, Abraham Lincoln and his wife Mary Todd struggle with the loss of their son and seek solace in a suspicious seance. Afterwards, the nation's 16th president will commute into the city (alongside the God of War) and grapple with the thorny issue of Emancipation.

Time:  1862

Part 2 of a 2 part series on the intertwined lives of Mathew Brady & Alexander Gardner. This is the story of how America's most famous photographers collaborated to create the Civil War's most enduring images - an exhibit known as "The Dead of Antietam". 

In this episode, Mathew Brady & Alexander Gardner meet with the Union army's new commander, Gardner ventures to the Antietam battlefield (twice) to capture the war's most searing imagery, and Mathew Brady unveils a disturbing new exhibition at his 'palace of light'. 

In today's expert interview episode, we go in-depth with special guest & photographic expert John Milleker to learn all about the fascinating history of photography during the 1800s. This is part 1 of a 2 part series on the intertwined lives Mathew Brady & Alexander Gardner, two of America's most famous photographers. Their journey will culminate in the creation of the Civil War's most enduring images - the exhibition known as "The Dead of Antietam". 

In this episode, Mathew Brady & Alexander Gardner will attend to the first (ever) World's Fair in London, meet Abraham Lincoln on the eve of the Civil War, and journey to the front to document the war's first great battle.
